The Phoenix restaurant scene is always changing, leaving long established restaurants fighting for recognition. The Stockyards is one of those long standing, historical establishments that is worth visiting. Often times these types of places rest on their laurels and don't meet expectations. Not true with the Stockyards. It has been nearly two decades since I last visited, which was a business dinner. We were celebrating an event this time, and wanted to dine at a steakhouse that wasn't Capital Grill type place or Durants. We arrived early for our 615pm reservation on Dec. 9th. I luckily was able to get a reservation after checking Open Table frequently for a week prior. We went to the bar area, and the attentive bar tender met us at the free standing counter in the center of the room to take our order. The bar counter itself was loaded with people. Their version of Moscow Mule and Whiskey Sour were average at best. We were seated promptly at 615pm, and immediately presented with their basket of homemade baking soda rolls and jalapeño corn bread biscuits, with honey butter. Tasty. We both ordered Blue Cheese Wedges and filet mignons, a 5oz and 8oz. with the twice baked potatoes. Waitress was very friendly and talkative, but not impersonal. We also ordered a bottle of wine, which she cleverly wrapped the wine bottle wrap around the cork. Never seen that before. The Blue Cheese wedge, while simple as it is, can be messed up easily. The Wedge plate and the salad itself were very cold, fresh, crispy and blue cheese plentiful. Perfect Wedge! The waitress gave us a quick history of the restaurant and said what makes them special, since opening, is that they cut all meat on premises. This is a lost art in the meat industry, and really makes a difference in quality. My husband knows how to "break beef" and knows meat is always better when this is done onsite. Our steaks arrived, cooked as requested, hot and melted in your mouth. The meat was very tender, perfectly seasoned and lean, but not dry. The potato side was hot and delicious. More bread was presented too. The bill was very reasonable around $180. We did not opt for dessert, as we were completely full and very satisfied. Next time we want steak or want to dine out with guests, we will take them to the Stockyard. The steaks were fantastic! This place has the coolest history. We were seated immediately which I loved. Our waitress had great energy and made great recommendations. The guys went with bison and I went with the chicken. The busier the restaurant got the less we saw of our waitress to the point we had eaten all of our desert and we had asked for our coffees 3 times. We sat with dirty plates often. Every time she came by I had to hand her a plate. I'm thinking the waitress doesn't take plates but I was tired of sitting with them. I ordered the chicken as I'm not a red meat eater and the vegetables had a smell of alcohol. I asked the waitress what was in it. She told me what I could clearly make out ... I said .. no I'm just wondering what the smell is ... she literally just walked away. ‍ Food was good, service started out good, the atmosphere is great. The cheesecake was delish! Worth going? Had Father's Day dinner here. This is a really nice and historical place. The staff is very friendly and they seem to work together as a team. I had the ribeye and the wife did a share plate with our son of the prime rib. They serve complementary bread as well. The ribeye wasn't prime but was super good. I was very impressed. The prime rib was good as well but more just like average good. And finished off with desert. The vibe and history of this restaurant is pretty cool, it's honestly the only reason to check it out. Starting with the service, we had John, he seems like a nice guy but the super fake server personality was quite obnoxious. His apron and pants looked filthy, for a "high end" steak place, look the part. Everyone at the table ordered a drink and when I asked for a Mocktail, he looked absolutely disappointed and annoyed, so I just got a coke. Food: I had the soup of the day which was crab pasole. The crab was an awful bad fish taste, way to spicy to eat. Absolutely disgusting. My western wedge was just a regular wedge salad and also SUPER TINY! I had the 12 oz ribeye, which I eat all the time. This was nothing but a slab of fat. My brothers was actual meat but not mine. For $18 I added lobster and bernais sauce and they put maybe 1 tablespoon of crab. The desserts we ok, the cheesecake won the night but the creme brulee needs serious help. It was not even crispy or bruleed on top and freezing cold. This was a HUGE waste of money and time. The food is absolutely terrible, you'll have better quality steaks from costco and more flavor cooking it yourself. I'm soo disappointed that I wasted my mother bday at this place. Very clean exterior & interior. Smiles greeted us upon entry and we were directed right to our reserved table. Great service right off the start is always a good sign. Met an associate here for a business dinner & it did not disappoint. Service followed in same way from our waitress & meal came out quickly. Simple menu is not a con but rather a pro. I am a big believer in "stick to what you do well and deliver". Menu choices from prime rib to various steaks. But I came for the prime rib. Another excellent experience at The Stockyards! Wife and I took our neighbor for dinner. We asked to be seated with Alice in the a booth in the dining room-perfect! We had cocktails a gimlet, old fashioned and a martini that were crafted perfectly. We started with the bourbon glazed shrimp which delicious! Entrees included elk medallions, prime rib and a delmonico. Wife and I had salad, and neighbor had the clam chowder. The girls had wine and I had Heineken Zero. Dessert? Yes please. I had pecan pie, wife the creme brûlée and neighbor the cheesecake. Naturally, we have enough leftovers for another meal as the Stockyards serves up grand portions. Ask for Alice-she is an absolute sweetheart who is attentive, informative and friendly. We'll be back in the New Year. First time, and it wasn't too bad. The New York strip was prepared perfect and tasted great! The potatoes were also hard to beat! I especially liked the jalapeño cornbread! And of course the salid was also great. Waged it all down with 2 glasses of Huss Blonde. My only suggestion would be to add more local beer! Overall, a decent place! read more

Great food. Great service. This place is a fancy shirt & tie styled restaurant. Casual dress is good, but you may feel under dressed for the occasion. If you are looking for nachos, chicken fingers, or mozzarella sticks, look somewhere else, At this establishment, look at spending $35-$45 per person. If you have a huge appetite you can opt for an 18-24 ounce cut of dark red meat, but that's going to cost you $55 to $80 dollars per plate, for a premium Goliath sized cut of meat for a hungry or greedy critter. I would suggest a 10-16 ounce cut, plus potato, plus soup or salad, plus a drink, this combo will put you about $45 dollars for an amazing meal. If you have the cash, and you want a great meal at an amazing place, come here. If you are looking for fast food at below market prices, keep strolling. Stay safe. read more

Megan was great as was the busier. He was working hard and we all decided to tip him 20$ on top of our 20 %. Arizona steak my partners got were huge and the broccoli cheddar soup was delish. This place is an Az classic. True rustic flare and historical value. First off the bar...(saloon) reminded me of Whisky Row in Prescott. The woodwork and the decor killed it. I Was staying at a hotel Near by and stopped here for dinner on my birthday. Nice ambience, dim lighting and friendly staff. I had the 12oz ribeye and Parmesan potatoes (I had to add a lot of salt and pepper) with a wedge salad (bacon was delicious!). For appetizer we had the venison sausage. On the hunt for a great prime rib, we finally made the trip to stockyards for dinner. Three of us arrived early on a Sunday evening and were promptly seated. Our table was nice and the menu looked promising. By 6pm it was pretty lively for a Sunday. The overall quality of our food makes this place a 4. Our service however, was not on the same level. They start you out with a relish tray of various cold veggies and ranch dip. You also get a basket of cornbread and biscuits with butter. The biscuits were delicious and we enjoyed the relish tray, but we had to ask for these items after ordering and seeing everyone else around them receive them. Our busboy/runner brought them and was very apologetic though. All of the busboys and runners we encountered were genuine and friendly. On the other hand, our server did not seem to care about our table one bit. He was borderline rude, impatient, and unhelpful even after asking if it was our first time there. I'm not sure if he was upset we declined a bottle of wine and ordered a glass instead or what, but he did not align with the level of service that this place seems to attempt to provide. Not impressed. As for the food, the prime rib and New York strip were excellent. The sides were hit or miss but overall solid. You also get a starter house salad or soup. The soup of the day was a seafood type chowder and it was delicious. The salad was average. My partners mom ordered the crispy shrimp and they were HUGE and also tasty. Prime Rib - 5 NY Strip with steak butter - 5 Crispy Shrimp - 4 Soup of the Day - 4 House Salad - 3 Whipped Potatoes - 2 Parmesan Potato Stack - 3.5 Veggies - 3 Cornbread - 3 Biscuits - 5 Overall, we would return and try some of the other potato side options. One of the guys at work picked this place for lunch with a customer recently and I was pleasantly surprised. As soon as you walk in you know you are in for a treat. I decided on the classic prime rib dip sandwich with fries .. this order was huge for lunch .. bread was soft, meat was tender and flavorful, creamed horse radish and au-jus it was delicious, I would highly recommend this if you're hungry. This establishment has been around since 1947.. if you've not been here yet.. you have to stop by.. they are known for their beef .. steaks and prime rib but they do offer daily soup and sandwich options, salads and burgers. This is my all time favorite steak place in Arizona!! It is a very elegant restaurant that I would recommend dressing business casual. It is very price but worth every single penny. All the food I ate was amazing and had no complaints about at all. The Johnny Walker Black was smooth and went down easy. The boar and veal starter was so sweat and savor, especially paired with the peach sauce they had. Then came the steak soup, which was thick and creamy with lots of meat in it. The ribeye was to die for. It was cooked right to perfection and very savor. When you cut into it, the juices flowed out of it. This place is amazing and if you have never gone I highly highly encourage you to go. It's worth the price and will leave you thinking about it everytime you want steak. read more

Stockyards has the best vibe and ambience, and their food can't be beaten. This is an awesome place for carnivorous types, not so much for people who aren't. Had a steak cooked to perfection, and all the sides were awesome. It definitely feels like a uniquely Arizona experience in there, like what you might remember from when you were a kid, because they are authentic. Been there forever. Pricey, but worth the experience once in a while IMO. I would have given them 5 stars, but some of the wait staff were wearing face masks. I don't like being served by sick people. (I'm assuming they're sick, as that's the only scientific reason for an otherwise healthy person to wear a mask). Other than being creeped out by the sick masks, great experience. read more

Came here for my anniversary. Me and my wife got the filet with mashed potatoes. The filet was cooked perfectly medium. The mashed potatoes were excellent. The biscuits and cornbread that comes before the meal was great. The server did a great job. He is probably one of the best servers I have had. I love this place. I like the western art. Loved this old school steak house. Wow. Baking soda biscuit was light and fluffy. Tried the bison off a friends plate and it was excellent. This was a disappointment. I wish I could give a 4 for service. However, the place is supposed to be known for steaks and meat dishes and only one of a table of 8 got their protein cooked correctly and that was fried shrimp. The service was good but very slow that is not always the servers fault but I never heard our server apologize for the wait. Nice atmosphere and setting but probably won't be back. Came here on a business trip as we were staying downtown Phoenix and it claims to be the oldest steakhouse with great history. We had pre-dinner drinks in the Saloon and the bartenders were both super friendly and made good cocktails. Cool ambience! We moved into the dining area and it was that old steakhouse feel. Our waiter was super attentive and food was very good. We liked the fact that the steak came with salad and sides vs a la carte. I'd highly recommend this restaurant and experience if you are in the area. read more
