Updating due to the owner's response- I received no text, no phone call, and no emails from either Strange Powers or from someone with Bethaney's name. Why did Geneva schedule with me for Monday initially if she doesn't work that day? I told her I specifically needed Monday when I called and she said "Oh I can actually get you in that day." I'm curious if the salon owner thinks the above haircut looks like long, round layers, or if that looks like a blowout? As I mentioned multiple times to Geneva, I scheduled the haircut and blowout specifically on Monday due to the photos I was going to be in later that day. Hope that clears things up. Returning the tip I was pressured to leave is not a refund. $135 for that haircut is robbery. Ask for "long round layers" at Great Clips and you'd get something miles better. I had my hair cut by Dan and my experience was shockingly bad. I came in with pictures of the style I wanted, and with barely a glance at these photos Dan got right to cutting. Not only does my hair not even begin to resemble the photos I brought, but they took off so much that I don't know what to do. I wish I could have intervened before they went so far, but I was faced away from the mirror the ENTIRE time. I had no indication of how poorly things were going until it was over. Dan did not seem to care at all what I wanted and proceeded to cut my hair without allowing me to see what they were doing. I hate to leave such a review but I am truly unsatisfied with my hair. To add insult to injury, I book the appointment with the advertised price being $105 and was not informed until after my hair was butchered that I was expected to pay $125 for the ordeal. I'd like to start by saying I've never written a bad review in my life, it took a lot for me to get the courage to post this. I'm so devastated by this experience I feel I have to say something. This review is also only for Andrea and not for the salon itself or any other stylist. My normal stylist was on hiatus and I hadn't had a trim in 8 months. I had been wanting bangs for over a year and decided to book an appointment to get a trim and add some longer bangs. My hair when I made this appointment was all one length, no layers and chest length (a blank canvas). I made an appointment with Andrea and showed her photos of what I wanted (longer bangs not too thick, with all one length on the rest) I told her I hated layers and I didn't want layers, I also specifically told her I didn't want a shag even though she cuts a lot of shags. She then told me my hair needed some layers in the back and some face framing, basically convinced me to do something I wasn't comfortable with. I told her that as long as the layers were subtle I would let her do some face framing and add some body to the back. I also told her I am a "wash and go" kind of gal and don't heat style or use much or any product and I needed my hair to be able to keep doing that. She went to town, did a quick razor and scissor cut and then styled me. I looked in the mirror and had to stop myself from crying. I was too shocked to even voice how I felt. I told her that I felt like it was in shag territory to which she said "it's not a shag". She gassed me up and took my photo assuring me I looked great. I paid, tipped 20% and left trying to believe her that it was not as I feared. I drove home and really took a good look at the cut... it was everything I specified I didn't want. It had super short layers all the way around my head, choppy layers so short and thinned out around my face that it was undeniably a shag. My bangs were pulled from far back- another undeniable shag feature. I cried for hours and even sent photos to a friend of mine out of state who does hair who agreed I was given a shag against my will. I texted Andrea and told her how sad I was and that I felt she didn't listen to me at all, while also specifying that I didn't want to hurt her feelings or be rude. She gave me a callous response just saying she was refunding my money and that she "does good work". Not even a sorry for giving me a cut I didn't ask for and that I was upset about. I now have to grow out a cut I hate, that makes me feel insecure and bad about myself, that isn't flattering on me or low maintenance. I'm now stuck with this hair now for a year or more unless I cut all my hair off. It doesn't matter if you do good work if you can't listen. read more

I heard about Strange Powers a few months ago when a co-worker showed up to work with one of the best haircuts I have ever seen. I made my apt soon after! I went from long hair to very short during the first summer of the pandemic, and I had been to a few stylists but never gotten the exact look I was going for, which was short but still feminine. But today Jaina nailed it at my first appointment and gave me my fave haircut I've ever had with short hair. I showed her a few pics of how I was hoping it could look and she knew just what to do to make it absolutely, perfectly what I was hoping for. Actually it's even better than what I was hoping for, which is the best thing that can happen when you get a haircut, in my opinion! Jaina is a master at her craft and so kind and comfortable to be around. I have found my forever hairstylist!! The salon is beautiful as well, with tons of pretty green plants everywhere that makes me feel like I'm at home in my living room. I don't leave Yelp reviews much: I think this is the second one I've written, but I really wanted to leave one about Jaina and Strange Powers because it was such a great experience, and since it has taken over two years to find someone who cut my short hair in the way I 1000% wanted it to be, I hope this helps anyone else who is looking for the right stylist. Airy salon with beautiful plants & incredible windows and natural light. I HIGHLY suggest Madeline- I have very thick, wavy/curly hair and a lot of it. I've seen many different dedicated "curly hair" stylists and people in town who charge double what Madeline does, and no one has been able to work with my hair the way she does. She really listens to what you want, talks through what will work for your hair texture and has incredible attention to detail- making sure you like every aspect of your cut before you walk out the door. I made an appointment to get my hair cut at 2pm today. I showed up 5 minutes early for my appointment. It was going to be with Amanda Nove Pocha. It was 2:21 before anyone bothered to let me know she'd be another 10-15 minutes late. She then said it "just slipped her mind" that she had the appointment as she casually chatted away with the client in her chair. She also gave the excuse that her hair cuts are usually from 3-4? Like why did I get to schedule it at 2pm then? To add further insult to injury she offered a free conditioning treatment... something I don't need nor was I seeking. So thanks for wasting my time while negging my hair at the same time. Don't bother with this stylist, she simply does not respect time. I'm guessing if I showed up 30 minutes late I'd have forfeited my appointment, but been expected to pay for it. So maybe I should be paid for my wasted time, and for being made to feel like I wasn't worth the time or energy to even acknowledge my presence. I've never been treated so unprofessionally at a haircut that would've cost like $80. read more

Bethaney has been my stylist for about two years, and just recently took the leap to work for herself at Strange Powers. I didn't bat an eye when making the decision to follow her to her new digs. This new studio is so rad...tons of light, plants and beautiful stations. It doesn't feel crammed like most salons, it's like a little retreat. Enough about the space tho and more about Bethaney. Bethaney has taken my hair on many journeys and has nailed it every time. I started with a long balayage that looked 100% natural. The color lasted for close to a year and grew out beautifully. In my last visit I was ready for a plunge and knew Bethaney was the perfect person to do it. You only have to check out her instagram page @bethaney.rose.tucker to see that she creates the raddest androgynous/pixie/short/transformation haircuts around. I couldn't quite make the plunge to go pixie (I am not nearly as cool as most of her clients) but she gave me an amazing angled bob with bang bangs. For the next month I walked around feeling liberated. Bethaney brought to the exterior a newly developing confidence that had been stirring within me. There is something about a haircut that can communicate to the world, "hey, I don't buy into your standards of beauty or your definition of who I should be or what I should look like." Bethaney doesn't conform to any one definition of beauty. She is a fantastic listener and communicator and has been 100% supportive of every style choice I have made.
