Good steakhouse that I'm very glad I gave a second chance. My first experience my steak was very overdone. This time I was convinced to try the duck. It was excellent. The skin was crispy and the duck juicy. Paired with grits and spinach it worked well. It was a little heavy with the cherry but it worked out. Highly recommend the lamb lollipops. I think I will just order those as a meal in the future. The crawfish and creamcheese balls (similar to pistollette but the name escapes me) were quite good as well. They have a daily lunch special but my favorite is the Tuesday special which is a fried pork cutlet, mashed potatoes and green beans with andouille. The special also comes with a side salad. I also enjoy their fish protein option and the hamburger steak. Stroubes is a great option if you have a business lunch meeting or if you just want a nice atmosphere for a sit-down lunch. read more

I have yet to leave a negative review on Yelp but there is a first time for everything. No, I am not a disgruntled eater who bitches about everything. Pretty much the opposite as a matter of fact. It was so bad that I am not going to go into every aspect. Just the highlights. Waiter literally throws our appetizer down and walks off. Ummm, excuse me but we don't have plates or silverware. Pointed this out to passing manager who made the waiter come back to our table and apologize like a grade schooler. Awkward. Steak comes out cold. Not warm mind you. COLD. Then they put it back on the grill and over cooked it. Brought me a drink that was supposed to be a Manhattan. Not sure what it was but it wasn't that. It's three ingredients. Not hard. Had to ask for utensils a second time so we could eat main course. Basically one of the worst restaurant experiences I have had. Sides of blue cheese grits and spinach were great. I came here with my work group and was really disappointed on a Tuesday evening. We ordered a variety of appetizers, drinks, entrees, and dessert. The drinks took over 15 minutes to come out and the restaurant didn't look busy at all! From the time we sat down to the moment we received our entree, 2 hours had gone by! I ordered a medium rare steak which was cooked medium well but since it had already taken 2 hours, I didn't bother sending it back. At most nice steakhouses, the waitstaff will ask to cut into the steak to ensure it's cooked properly but that didn't happen here. They even forgot to bring out an entree for one of my coworkers! Throughout the evening, my water cup stayed empty too. I was surprised because the place really wasn't that busy! Stroubes is a great reason to come downtown! Parking downtown isn't really a hassle, if there isn't anything curbside there's always the parking garage a block away. I love the décor of the place, it's modern but the brick walls help soften the look. The bar is small but functional, bathrooms are nice, and the wall of windows are great for people watching while you eat! We sat in a booth last night and couldn't even tell we had neighbors, very cozy! Normally we don't go out on weeknights but it was my birthday. My husband had given this bit of info to the hostess who passed it on to our server and it ended up getting us a free dessert which was very sweet (pun intended?). Our server was Sarah and she was very good. For dinner we split the app of Abita BBQ Shrimp & Grits, I had the Caesar salad and my husband had the bleu cheese wedge, and for our entrees I had a 6 oz filet with a bacon demi-glace and he had the yellowfin tuna. Everything was delicious, all of their salad dressings are housemade, which I love. We brought our own wine, the corkage fee is $12. Our dessert was the chocolate pots de crème, delicious! We never felt rushed, the service never lagged, it was just right. A great place to come for a date night or special occasion. I asked for a red bull and vodka and the waitress says they don't keep red bull anymore because the employees kept stealing them. Well, FIX that. Overall a very nice experience. Our reservation was for 7 pm on a Monday night and were greeted upon arrival and seated promptly at a table next to the wall of glass overlooking Third St. Very nice modern decor that mixed nicely with the old building. After a couple of cocktails we were treated to a delicious gnocchi and crab appetizer with a brown butter cream sauce and sweet corn that the chef was working on for an upcoming James Beard dinner. We followed that with the fried calamari and foie gras appetizers. The calamari was nice and crunchy and the foie gras was like an adult version of peanut butter and jelly. Very, very good. A few more cocktails and we finally ordered our entrees. I had the ribeye topped with the blue cheese mushroom sauce and parmesan risotto. The partner had a filet with lump crab and the lobster mac-n-cheese. All dishes were delicious and generously sized. Steak temps were perfect. They have a very nice beer and wine list at reasonable prices with lots of wine by the glass and some great beer selections. (Not Chimes selection but still..) We rounded off the meal with a dessert of mixed berrys in a sort of white chocolate sabayon, although I was surprised that they only had two desserts that night and I really wanted something a bit more decadent. We ordered a Fonseca port and Nocello to go with dessert and unfortunately they only had ruby port not tawny. Oh well. Once for dinner, once on a walking dinner tour of downtown BR (which everyone should try), and then Thursday night for taste of the house. Superb. Taste of the house was such a wonderful dining experience. First off, the atmosphere is most perfect. Open windows, candle lit tables- just beautiful. The wait staff was so attentive, polite, and knowledgeable. The course size was more than enough for me and my boyfriend as we decided to skip the fish course and move to dessert (because who can forgo dessert?!). We we so full but well prepared for sweets. :) The chef came around twice to introduce himself and check on us. Terrific experience. I look forward to many more romantic date nights here! read more

The food was amazing! More amazing:: The service! Dan, Vadim, & Alexandra- to say they were incredible would be an understatement. They went above and beyond and were phenomenal. They were our servers for a 3 course prix fixe meal (still needed to take orders from various choices on said meal), as well as appetizers and alcohol for THIRTY NINE people. Not once was there an empty water/tea glass. For that matter was there rarely an empty wine glass!! Can't account for those who drank the wine as soon as it was poured :). These 3 servers were unbelievable in their attentiveness, professionalism, speed, and spot on customer service. At no time did any of the 39 guests want for anything. Dan, Vadim, and Alexandra truly made the evening even better!! I thoroughly tip my hat to these 3. {insert cheers & applause here} As for the food..... sweet, savory, and visually appealing. We offered 2 salads, 3 main courses, and 2 desserts. The main courses were: salmon, duck, and steak. I can attest that the duck was delectable cooked to medium rare perfection. It was served in a cranberry reduction sauce with spinach and Gouda cheese grits. And we are talking about the good, thick, stone ground grits. The duck was not too fatty and a very decent portion. My table of about 15 had no complaints on the rest of the meals. I'm fairly confident their experience was as good as mine. And the desserts. Holy mouthwatering Batman! Again, my experience is with the white chocolate bread pudding. Once again I was provided a healthy portion size and it was delicious. Not too soggy and you could really taste the flavors. I will miss not having that readily accessible as I do not live in Baton Rouge. The other dessert was a full serving of chocolate mousse. I Failed to hear any complaints about that dish either. Though- I didn't hear anything because everyone was stuffing their face!! Overall this place was amazing!! I've been inBaton Rouge for four days and have eaten here for lunch and or dinner every day for two reasons; 1 it is probably the most upscale of the restaurants in a two block radius of my hotel, and 2 they make a few things really well. Tip 1- skip the ribeye, at $36 you can do better with the bone in. Mine was ok. Tip 2- do try the chargrilled oysters. Prepared with breadcrumbs and Parmesan cheese and served on a bed of rock salt, you may think it's going to be a cold dish, but it is perfectly warm. Excellent flavor and perfect oyster chewiness. Tip 3- try the lamb lollipops. Three pieces of rack of lamb over a delicious mound of garlic and white wine braised spinach. Super juicy, and you will want to pick up the bone and bite off the meat you could not daintily remove with your knife and fork. Tip 4- do try the Caesar salad with fried oysters. I passed on the croutons and cherry tomatoes. Very simple, but the oysters make it awesome and Baton Rougey (it's a word now, deal with it). Tip 5- if you don't try the creamy brie sauce then you are insane. Dip your meat in it, dip your bread in it. Dip your salad in it. Whatever you do eat it Of note, I've had really attentive service every time. I'm particularly a fan of the bartender who clearly relishes the art of mixology. He talked me into the "basiled greyhound"- house made basil vodka, white grapefruit juice, and basil. It's like a mint julep or a mojito, but more savory and less sweet. I studied the Yelp reviews before going to this Stroubes. All the photos on Yelp don't lie. The food is amazing. Everything is better than good, it is excellent. We tried about 9 different appetizers. The chef has a great ability to create some incredible sauces for each dish. The ambiance is quiet, the service is excellent, and the food is awesome; what else is there? If we were going to stay more than one night, we would have gone back again. Also, a shout out to Desiree, our waitress, who is excellent at her job, knowledgable, and exactly what a 20 year veteran in the hospitality biz (me) hopes to get each time they go out to eat. First of all,this is an upscale restaurant, so dress accordingly. The atmosphere and ambience is amazing. The high ceilings and large booths really make you feel like you have stepped into a place in New York City. The food was incredible. I went with a friend and we decided we were going to indulge. We started with the Stroubes Roll which was delicious. I actually think I might eat this as my meal next time. I had the Crab, Corn and Brie soup which I loved and the Duck la Louisiana for my entree. Not only was the food delicious, the presentation was wonderful. My friend ordered the Caesar salad, turtle soup and Filet Oscar. The salad and Filet were wonderful, but neither of us were fans of the turtle soup. It was thick and actually tasted like chili. The service was excellent and very attentive. It was a refreshing place to dine in downtown Baton Rouge, and in Baton Rouge in general. I can't wait to go back and try something else. I would definitely recommend before going to an event at the River Center or Shaw Center. Both were easily in walking distance. I took my girlfriend here on a date night and we were blown away. We started with the Crab, Corn, and Brie soup as well as an order of Crawfish Beignets. The soup was so good that I was scared that my girlfriend was going to pick up the soup bowl and drink it. The beignets were incredible and the bacon jam was a fantastic compliment. She got the filet mignon, I got the redfish. I think we both left saying that it was the best fish/steak we have ever had. The bread pudding is a must if you are looking at dessert. I also ordered the strawberry basil smash cocktail and was blown away. Such a wonderful restaurant. The open windows make for a great lunch vibe and a romantic dinner setting. Went there with a party of 7 tonight. Since I didn't taste our compadres' meals my rating is based on the quality of the food for wife and I, and service for the whole table. First off, impressions of service that pertain to the whole group, Asked the waiter to bring us a good $55 red wine. He came back with an "off menu" Z that was killer and well received by all (2) wine drinkers. Waiter, he was attentive and considering the group size, did a very good job. As for the food, my Gouda grits were killer, Wedge salad was good, not great, 6oz filet was very good, not as good as the best in our hometown (Dallas) but also not as expensive. Wife's oysters, ate ever morsel, not a shred left in the shells, ditto her asparagus. Can't say the same for the overly salty gumbo but it was taken off our bill so no biggie. Very rich and tasty!! but too salty. Desserts were great, bread pudding one of the better examples around, and very good creme brulee. Here is what my table had Ceasar salad + Duck la Louisiane - Both items were fantastic! Crawfish Mac n Cheese + Filet - Same, both were awesome. The steak was beautifully cooked and melted in your mouth. Frenchied Pork chop + Stroubes Salad - DELICIOUS Smoked plank Salmon (I think that's what the menu said) - Wonderful! So, I'd recommend all of these things. If I go again, I'm definitely getting one of the bisques, because the neighboring table got some, and the smell was out of this world. Such a classy place. My only complaint was that most of our food was kind of room-temperature when we got it. This was probably our waiter's fault, but he made up for it by being helpful and extremely polite. read more

Stroubes is located in a very nice space in downtown Baton Rouge and easy walking distance from our hotel. We were greeted promptly and our reservations acknowledged. The booth was very comfortable with a great view of the 3rd street through the large attractive windows. The service was just okay. For some reason a drink order took a painful amount of time to be served. Also, for some reason it appears the waitstaff are trained to pour the bottled beer straight into the glass and not at an angle while the glass remains on the serving tray. We saw this at our table and others. As a result all you get is foam. This was very odd. Our waiter had difficulty explaining the specials of the evening and we were not even provided with the choice of the caesar salad with fried oysters which I would have welcomed. The wedge salad with blue cheese was fresh and nicely presented. I liked the bacon jam added to the top of the wedge. There was excellent garlic bread but it took two requests to get the bread served. The entree was a special a mahi mahi on a bed of risotto, with asparagus and baby crawfish. All in all it was a good dish. The asparagus had a nice char and smoky taste. The risotto was very well prepared. My complaint is that the mahi mahi and crawfish while fresh tasting were heavy with salt. Some work is needed but Stroubes is an attractive and potentially very good dining experience. read more

Party of 6, our waitress was terrible, forgot to serve the bread and then lied that they had to bake it, when we watched two tables who sat after us receive their's. Evening special 9oz. Filet with 3 grilled shrimp and small eggplant slice was $60.00. (Filet 37.00 normally, so shrimp and eggplant cost $23.00) nothing special about the special other then the outrageous price.
