The first time my ribeye was just as good as any steak I have anywhere, maybe except for one or two other restaurants. The second time while good, not did not touch the first experience. The butter served with the steak browned, maybe too much, and overwhelmed the steak. Both time my Wife ordered the filet on both occasions. The first time the steak was pretty good but this past time it was overcooked and the char on the outside was bordering on burnt. During our most recent visit I started with the wedge and my Wife the sensation salad. My wedge was good but not in the top 3 best I have ever had. My Wife was not pleased with the sensation salad at all. The sensation was very small and not enough dressing. We also ordered the Mac & Cheese and Potatoes Au Gratin. The Mac & Cheese was very good. It taste and looked a lot better than most of the pictures posted on Yelp. The potatoes were okay, not great but not horrible. The complimentary bread was good however, not close to even being top 10. We finished our meal with the New York Cheesecake. It was okay as well, you can find just as good of cheesecake at a lot of places.

Apparently, many of the people waiting were large groups and families coming from church, but since there were only three of us, they were able to seat us almost immediately. HUGE plus! Once inside, it was BUSY, BUSY, BUSY. It took our server a little while to initially get to us, but considering how packed the restaurant was, it really wasn't bad at all. Our waitress was very nice, and I was actually impressed with how quickly our food came out. Now let's talk about the FOOD!! They are shaped almost like little donut holes... crispy on the outside and soft and savory on the inside. Delicious! For my side, I chose the fresh green beans instead of the dirty rice. Unfortunately, those were the one thing I didn't enjoy. They didn't have much flavor to me and seemed a little undercooked. Next time, I'll definitely choose another side. My husband ordered the fried catfish platter with dirty rice, coleslaw, and fries, and he loved everything. I tasted his coleslaw, and OH MY GOODNESS! Get the coleslaw! It was different from any coleslaw I've had before. It has whole peanuts in it, which sounds unusual, but somehow it WORKS! The peanuts add this wonderful crunch and flavor. It was SO good. And the French fries!! I've never seen fries cut this way before. They're almost shaped like little Scoop Fritos, with a crispy outside and soft potato inside. So unique and really good! My daughter ordered the catfish strips and fries from the kids' menu. These weren't processed little nuggets... they were actual pieces of catfish cut into strips, and she really enjoyed them. She also ordered the crab fingers, and those were another 10/10! They were incredibly well-seasoned with a little spice and tons of flavor. I tasted one and wanted MORE! I'm watching my sodium intake, so I behaved myself, but they were absolutely delicious. Overall, Parrain's was a 10/10 for us. The only thing I wouldn't personally order again would be the green beans. Everything else, from the shrimp and catfish to those amazing hush puppies, unique fries, crab fingers, and especially that coleslaw, was DELICIOUS. Yes, it was crowded and lively, but we still received really good service and didn't have to wait nearly as long as we expected. With our grandson now attending LSU, we'll be making plenty of trips back to Baton Rouge, and Parrain's has officially made our list of places we will be visiting again!

I hate to do it, but I'm not going to eat the steak that's raw when I order it mid well or medium. A couple of times when they told me that they were going to take my steak back and then remake my steak -for sure they just popped it under the broiler for a few minutes and that does not give you the same flavor or the same experience as a steak right off of the grill. I think that they believe customers won't notice, but I happen to be a discerning customer who will! When I order a filet I really want to think that it will come out right. This has happened to me so many times now that I have stopped ordering steak when I go to Longhorn. I just order other things instead. I've also stopped going for dinner and I only go for lunch. Sadly, I know that I'm not the only person that feels this way about this location...

I recently dined at Stroubes for the first time for a lunch meeting. I was very excited to try it because it appeared to be one of the top higher-end restaurants of the down town area, but my experience has left me conflicted. Let me first say that the food was FANTASTIC, and if this review was based only on food I would give 5 stars. Everyone was pleased with the Pepper Calamari that we ordered as an appetizer. I ordered the Sirloin as my meal- WOW! A perfectly seasoned medium sirloin served over flavorful mashed potatoes and topped with a hollandaise sauce. It was fantastic! Now, for the reason I am giving Stroubes a 3 star review- the service. We were seated and greeted by our server right away. We received our drinks in a timely fashion, but this was the end of the good service. We ordered the calamari and were finished eating it before our server came back to ask how it was or take our meal orders. Once we placed our order, we never saw him again until we hunted him down for our check. Other servers brought out our food, but no one else was around during our meal to see how it was or if we needed anything else. The restaurant was not busy at all, someone should have been taking care of us. This bad service experience has not turned me away from Stroubes. I'll be back to enjoy their amazing sirloin and to try their lunch specials that looked so good. I just hope the service improves! UPDATE 12/18/15 I recently dined at Stroubes again for a lunch meeting. This time, the service was FANTASTIC! Our server was friendly, efficient and very knowledgable of the menu. I've found the blueberry lemon drop to be my ABSOLUTE favorite cocktail they serve. Destiny was our waiter and she was attentive and on point with beverage refills. The bar just seems to run a bit slowly... wait time for starting round on average seems a bit slow. Appreciate how restaurant has many smaller rooms to keep noise levels down.

I am a sucker for a waterfront restaurant…read more Located in New Roads right on the water, Morel's offers a world class view. The view is so great that I could probably even ignore poor service or mediocre food. Luckily, both were great which made this one of my favorite dining experiences of 2025. When I first walked in, there were no other customers. This made me a little worried. That worry evaporated once the onion rings hit the table. Hell yes. Get these. They are wonderful. The steak was also very darn good. Best steak I've ever had? Probably not but still very good. Service was friendly and attentive. Remember when I said there were no other customers? They started rolling in after we were seated. We must've timed it right. If you're anywhere near New Roads, you should add Morel's to your list.
