Good German food. The Pretzel was huge and delicious. Meet loaf was okay. Pork shank's skin was a bit rough.

Was passing by Springfield around lunchtime today and finally took the opportunity to check out this famous establishment. I gotta agree with the comment below that it's disappointing that they don't have Spaetzle-- but hey, not every German restaurant serves Spaetzle, y'know? :) Found the food to be quite solid. The German sides like sauerkraut and cucumber salad were spot on, and even the more boring veggies (cooked carrots, squash) reminded me of why I like eating in Germany--just enough salt and butter to make things tasty, but not overwhelming. Frying was competent (e.g., for schnitzel), but the winning meat was the weisswurst. It's a pretty meat-intensive place, though the vegetarian plate was also surprisingly respectable. (Probably wouldn't go there specifically for that, but it makes a totally reasonable option for non-meat eaters) All-around high marks for authenticity. Service was also friendly and moderately efficient-- I think we just beat the lunch rush, so the wait for food wasn't too bad, and we got to admire the wood paneling and animatronic christmas decorations while we waited. read more

Based on the reviews I thought it would have been a better experience. The pros are that the food was very good. There must have been a mix-up with service staff. We waiting about 10 minutes before a waitress noticed and took our drink order. She was not our primary server and it was nice for her to notice. With that said, the restaurant had some significant drawbacks. We made reservations a week in advance, so you would think that we would have gotten a decent seat. Instead, we were seated at a table that was partially in a walkway and almost next to the women's rest room. There was constant parade of children running back and forth to the bathroom and spending a noisy five minutes having fun. It was so bad that the hostess and waitresses addressed it while standing next to me. I have to give props for the amazingly huge and delicious pretzel. The schnitzel was excellent too. I was here about a month ago. This place has a great authentic German feel. I did not have a traditional German dish but my meal was fantastic. We started with the GIANT pretzel as a recommendation from the waitress. It was ridiculously HUGE, and tasty. Aside from the pretzel I was trying to watch what I ate so I had the Garden salad with their Famous Roquefort Dressing and Mustard glazed salmon on the side. Everything was great. The dressing is as good as the waitress said, a must try for sure. The salmon was cooked perfectly and salad was average, a good filler. I have been going to this restaurant since I was five years old. My grandmother used to take us every year for "May Day" and Holliday eggnog. In May they have homemade May wine that is tasty and at Christmas time homemade egg nog is delicious. Food is ALWAYS spot on. Served fast and hot. I enjoy the wurst platter, schnitzel, spattzle and authentic German items. Fried potatoes and spatzzle are my favorites. Deserts are made fresh and have a nice presentation. Sometimes I do feel rushed to move so the table can be turned over as the restaurant is always busy. This is out top choice for a night out and a great local authentic place to take anyone visiting the area. Staff is friendly and efficient. We enjoy the authentic German decor. read more

Iconic German restaurant in a great location. Mixed drinks and beer are fantastic. Friendly service and a huge menu. Would give 5 stars but felt food was a bit mixed. Some dishes were spot on (spetzle) but some sauces were a bit heavy and bland. Will try again. Decor is interesting but in some corners a bit tired and dusty. We came here for dinner the week of the Brimfield market in May b/c we were staying in Springfield. The food was pretty good, but looked better than it actually tasted. Unfortunately the service was quite slow--pleasant enough, but not really paying attention--it took almost 5 minutes to get someone to look at me in order to get a table even though the restaurant side was nearly empty. Nothing I would run back here for : ( The service was decent until she got busy and then just straight up forgot about us. So we asked for the check, she was apologetic and we appreciated the sentiment. The giant pretzel is exactly that and pretty decent. the mustard wasn't half bad, the cheese sauce is a bit to rouxish and not cheesy enough for my taste. The candy apple martini I ordered wasn't exactly candy apple... couldn't put my finger on it though... wasn't terrible and quite frankly was the most appealing drink on the list. I had an incredibly hard time picking something to eat but went with the knockwurst on a bun with tots. The BEST part of my food was the bun it was toasted PERFECTLY!!! The tots were just that with a gross half sour pickle on the side. My husband ordered the Mac and cheese spatzle which was parsley heavy mixed in the spatzle, he thoroughly enjoyed it I thought it was ok. He also got the cucumber salad as a side which was incredibly sweet..... I had heard this place had gone down hill and I'm sorry I didn't heed the warning. The decor is pretty and on point, the bathroom was clean and the sink was actually pretty cool. Be warned parking is a pay lot, assuming there is an attendant you will pay even on a weekend. But if no attendant you might skate away free from charge!!! There is not at this time an automated pay station. You can also feed a meter on the street, which were uncovered when we walked in and covered when we walked out. My mother and father's first date was at Student Prince and my mother just turned 93. So that was a LONG time ago! We first went back so that I could here stories about this restaurant and how Springfield was back in the day. But then it became one of our favorites not just for its authenticity but for the great food and wonderful staff. It truly is a very special place. read more

This was an amazing place. You walk inside and the decor is wonderful. Steins, hummels all over the place. The hostess was very nice. She told us that the place has been there for over 80 years. The food is German bade My wife had a Ruben and I had knock wurst. The food was served quickly and hot. Both meals were excellent Would recommend this restaurant read more

My colleague is enthusiastic about German food to say the least. So it was with great excitement we headed downtown to the Student Prince. We headed inside and I was really impressed with the real wood paneling and beer stein collection. Straight up I ordered a Spaten bier and have to say it was delicious. The menu has a lot of very German dishes, so if you're not familiar ask the wait staff, they were very helpful. I ended up ordering the Jaeger Schnitzel and my friend ordered the sampler platter. Both come with spaetzl, which was super. His order also had sauerkraut and white bratwurst which he really liked. My schnitzel was unbreaded which surprised me, but the mushroom gravy was great and I enjoyed it very much. The red cabbage was sweet and pretty good. After dinner was desserts: brownie sundae and strawberry-rhubarb pie, both good but someday I want to taste a pie with a lot more of that sour rhubarb flavor. Alas today was not that day. This place was a reccomendation on my first trip to Springfield and was pretty close to the hotel I was staying at so I went. It was pretty hyped up so I was unsure of my feelings of going in but it really did live up to the hype. I and the prime rib and it was very tender and melted right in my mouth. I don't remember what else we had but I do remember saying and thinking that maybe the people that hyped this up really knew what they were talking about. Parking sucked, it was street parking and the area it was in didn't seem that great but I have no idea because i don't know the area. The good thing is that they do valet, unsure if it's for certain times or certain days of the week but that's a bonus. read more

Amazing German food. I've had the Paprika Schnitzel twice and enjoyed it both times. The roasted potatoes are a nice touch as a side along with fresh greens in the house salad with their homemade Roquefort dressing is a must try. Top if off with your favorite beer on tap and it doesn't get much better than that...unless you have room for dessert! Great atmosphere and service too. Let me be fair by first saying I'm not the biggest fan of German food. Now that that's out of the way I'll try to give you here as I see it. Friendly staff, great drink selection a bit pricey, not a great neighborhood. Inside is very nice especially since renovations. I won't critique the food because I simply don't like German food, I will say they don't offer mouth else if you're like me and don't like German food, but everything seems to be so cooked fine. Terrible server. Jessica didn't write anything down which cause her to forget 90% of every order each time she came to the table including the meals. There were 8 of us and as a former server I guess I am ultra critical. One member of our party actually bit in to buck shot and luckily avoided a chipped tooth. We e been eating at the Student Prince for more than 30 years, yesterday was ny first disappointing experience. Apparently they were very short staffed, although they were setting up tables they were too busy to wait on us. We ordered the usually amazing Fried Camembert Vheese, they didn't cook it enough and the cheese was barely warm and certainly not the usual soft a bit melted. The giant Pretzel was hard and not too warm, the Beer Cheese sauce only tasted of Jalapeno. Perhaps our appetizers were forgotten some where as they served us the soups and salad first... Someone in our party told the server she has Celiac and ordered Gluten Free Lamb Shanks and they brought in without sauce but on spätzle. I ordered and stated I was a vegetarian and they brought sauerkraut with pork in it. The server brought back the lamb and replaced the sauerkraut with their delicious red cabbage. On a positive note, she replaced my Split pea soup with a salad with the most delicious Roquefort dressing (Note: $4 surcharge for the Roquefort Dressing). Our water glasses were never refilled and one member of our party ordered a beer but had to repeatedly request water. My final disappointment was the apple strudel, it was served hot which I didn't request and it lacked any strudel like exterior, it was simply not a flaky or tasty pastry. Perhaps they were too busy with the Big E booth and a Wedding but it certainly was not what I expect from the Student Prince. read more

My husband and I got a bunch of small plates last time we were there, including bratwurst, duck livers, camembert cheese, and it was just fantastic. Excellent service. The "Famous" veal shank was a reheated, flavorless, stale meat on a large bone. $67.00 The potato pancakes were flattened balls of very under-cooked potato shreds, blackened on the outside and tasting of raw fish. Sent back. The "Beer Cheese" served with the pretzel was actually a thin white cheese sauce with mashed preserved jalapeno pieces. No beer at all. Not good tasting. The Spanish onion soup had gritty bits in it. Spanish ? The veal schnitzel was not crispy and hot, it was a soggy wet, tough, lukewarm, chewy mess. Mushroom gravy from a can. The wait staff did not have knowledge of the menu items. They were not attentive at a time of 20% occupancy. They congregated around the powder room and a back room, which they drew a curtain closed to shut themselves off from the dining room area. I felt unwelcome from beginning to end. There was a palpable careless attitude, along with smug side glances from waitstaff more interested in their appearance than the needs of their guests. read more

Apparently my grandfather was a big fan of the place so I was compelled to check it out. The GF is a local law student and the Student Prince is located right downtown making the location a plus. Ambiance is really cool. A good...if not great place to have an evening with friends around Oktoberfest. Authentic Bavarian decor and steins litter the place and the waitresses dress in the traditional garb. The menu was a bit pricey for my mid 20something budget but they do have some AWESOME offerings. The wild game being particularly noteworthy. And you can't complain about their German beer list. Overall its a top foodie destination in Springfield. I'd go back, but only for special occasions. We have been going to the Fort long before changing hands of ownership. Rumors swarmed not so good anymore. The Fort is as good or better than it has ever been. The ambience of German steins and beautiful bar area is fantastic. Everyone is warm and friendly. We had the clams casino a traditional style that is amazingly tasty. I have had clams casino everywhere from MA to CA and Fort is top notch. Potato pancakes are a must so so tasty. The popover with beef and a demi glaze sauce was off the charts delicious. I remember a long time ago having lamb ribs at a incredible BBQ restaurant and, loving them. Memory of a lifetime. The lamb ribs in mango barbecue sauce was even better. The wiener snitzel hit the spot. But the pickles were beyond sub par. They tasted like they took pickles then Un pickled them and left them in the ocean for a few monthes. My friend purchased the kangaroo it was so stiff he had to spit it out. My other friend ate the buffalo and proceeded to deffocate on the side of the road. This was a surprising treat. There were live singers, singing songs from Sound of Music and others. They were amazing! The server was attentive and friendly. The atmosphere is pretty cool. They have an incredible collection of steins and wine glasses from all over the world. The food was really delicious. I recommend the giant pretzel.
