There are two dining venues at The Whitney: the Studio Cafe on the ground floor and the Studio Bar on the 8th floor. This review is about the latter. Indoor and outdoor seating. If there is a waitlist you can visit the galleries and they will text when your table is ready. Service is very sensible and COVID-aware; servers are masked. Each table has a barcode that allows you to place your order and pay your bill with no human contact. Waiters are present o serve your food and answer your questions. You are not required to use the self-service ordering, but I found it effective and efficient. As I said, you still have a waiter and the service was top-notch. The tip is added to the order and payment process. If you are not going to tip you should not take a table and dine here. This is America and servers are paid by tip. In this pandemic, it is more important than ever to tip. Twenty percent is a bare minimum. If you aren't going to tip, don't take a table. We were a party of two and had the cheese plate and charcuterie plate, along with fried pickles and fried eggplant. The fried eggplant was the star of the meal, but that does not take away from the superior quality of the cheeses. The food was excellent and we ate it all. The indoor space looks comfortable and tables are well-spaced. The outdoor space could use more umbrellas to block the sun. We were comfortable at a high bar table, although the plates are large for bar tables. Along with the food, we had a total of three drinks, and the final cost with generous tip was about $50 per person. I will return for lunch the next time I am at the museum. read more

First of all, we came up here after realizing how pricey the food was at Untitled, the main floor restaurant at the Whitney. This place is great because you can sit outside and look at the amazing view! We had an awesome server. She was funny, helpful, and nice. We asked her for recommendations and she suggested we all try different toasts. She also mentioned that it's a good deal to get a toast and a soup or salad for a few more dollars if you are extra hungry. We just ended up each getting our own toasts. I was very happy with my order of the whitefish one. The flavor of the fish was great and it had some nice tomatoes on it too. It was so good I didn't want to trade for a piece of anyone else's toast! They also serve coffee and tea here so it's great if you just need a light bite while spending the day at the museum. We came up to visit the museum after eating at Untitled downstairs. We were stuffed from brunch, but managed to easily finish all the desserts we ordered. The Shaken Matcha was super refreshing and it paired very well with all the desserts. We ordered a pistachio/berry cake (my favorite!), matcha donut (has creamy stuffing inside), chocolate cream puff, and a lemon pound cake. It is great going out with friends since you can try a little bit of everything :) We got our food and went to the terrace to eat. The terrace has amazing views and has spacious seating. 4 1/2 stars. Having received an insider tip to "skip untitled and go to the roof!" I headed with my girlfriends for drinks and a bite to studio cafe. That was in June, after recently opening, and it truly was a 3 star trip at most. The view is spectacular and the toasts are delicious, but the service hadn't sorted itself out yet. They served us and three other tables wine right before the museum was closing, prompting security to try and throw us out and management trying to have us chug our wine AND pay for it. Members of the museum were truly upset, while a couple who had just been opened a bottle were confused. They were escorted down to Untitled, the main restaurant, to allow them to finish. Bottom line: we all should have been comp'd drinks or not offered to order another round at all. I returned again with my mother on a weekday afternoon for a lunch and museum trip. Truly a night and day experience. The restaurant was SO organized with spot on service from the hostess, the servers recommendations, to timely plate clearing. This was reflected in how busy and popular that place has become since June. We shared a seasonal summer squash toast, a surprising peach gazpacho that was lovely, and a chicken and kale salad. I love that they will split plates for you, and cut the toasts based on size of your party. Great touch. Everything was absolutely delicious and you can't beat the sunshine + view. I'm docking half a star because each time I've been the wine by the glass pour has been so small it's offensive. Opt for a fresh cocktail instead. Terrible service. Good luck getting a water refill here. Seriously, they refilled the glasses on the table next to us - twice before they even notice ours. It was a damp day so we decided to stop by to get a cup of coffee and a snack in the museum. Untitled has nice reviews so we figured that Studio Cafe wouldn't be terrible. Menu was limited - if not boring. It mainly consisted of cheese plates for food options, at least on that particular day. Did not see the soups, the toasts nor the salads on the menu that day. There were about three pastry options. Maybe because it was the day after Christmas? Cheese plate was very disappointing. They mean it when they say: Cheese, house jam, sourdough ($13) Only 3 HALF slices of sourdough tho ?? So pretentious. The jam was not flavorful. It was chunky and weird. After about 20 minutes of no water refills the waitress showed up again. Asked if we wanted coffee refills and disappeared for another ten. this is to the lower cafe on May 19,2022 11-12ish. as a barista from LA this was a mess and a disappointment considering they're representing some of the best artist. the workers made us wait 30 minutes for 4 drinks. while we confronted them, they were scratching their arms & sipping their coffee while they had stacks of coffee (3 of our drinks) get cold. I made a comment to the young black girl sipping her coffee that "as a barista, it would've went well if you handed out the drinks that are sitting getting cold to then let us know on the status on the last drink" she responded with "that's not my problem" and smirks, then looks away. they gave us the coffee for free but i was taxed on the comment. Coffee tasted good but the coffee maker puts too much foam, and since it sat I had half a cup of coffee. Train your workers. -22 y.o read more

I aesthetically loved this place, the menu design (typography!!) as well as the cafe design were beautiful. If you sit outside you get a lovely view of the city but stay inside if you're looking for air conditioning. Like most other museum cafes it's overpriced for the offerings but I thought it was really cool that they had about six or eight different toast choices. It reminded me of places in SF that specialize in awesome toast. I got the coconut passion fruit cake which was pretty good, the frosting was literally thick buttercream with less cream more butter... so I didn't enjoy the outside as much as I enjoyed the passion fruit jelly coating that was in between the layers of cake. When I ordered the toast I was expecting something like the beautiful pictures on the website, but it was nowhere near. While my mom's falafel toast was delicious, my speck and fig toast was really messy to eat and unbalanced in flavor. The bread was so toasted it became tough and the speck kept getting stuck in my teeth, and all in all I did not feel as glamorous as I would have wanted sitting in an art museum. I really recommend this place! I had the grain bowl. It was special. The dish was as beautiful as any art piece the Whitney houses, and the taste was complex and unique and so wonderful. The grains (quinoa and emmer) were creamy, clustered together in a greenish sauce and the toasted coconut flakes, red currants, cauliflower and brussel sprouts adorned them fabulously. It was just the right amount of food, and managed to be rich and healthy. My parents were blissed out over their whitefish toasts, and I can confirm that they were of sublime deliciousness. Crunchy, creamy and salty. We really felt we were in heaven dining at the studio cafe, the food and the incredible views from a high elevation were responsible for this effect. Decently good food at museum cafe prices. In the mood for a mid-afternoon snack & recharge (taking in all that art is surprisingly hard work!), I ordered the toast & soup combo and a macchiato. The toast was a good-sized portion (about the size of a slice from the midsection of a large, round loaf of bread), large enough to share if you like. Good, fresh-baked multigrain bread, topped with potato, dill and smoked arctic char. The dill flavor was enjoyable, but the smoked char was very mild, not as flavorful as good smoked salmon. The potato was, in retrospect, an odd carb-on-carb choice of topping, but with the dill in there it worked. The soup was smoked tomato and pecorino, simple but good, and a good pairing for that particular toast. The macchiato was also good, rich and strong without being bitter. At $6, a bit pricey for a single macchiato, but I guess they know you're a captive audience. Service was attentive, polite and friendly. The toast & soup ($22), macchiato and a water ran to about $40 with tip, or about twice the price of the museum admission. Not bargain pricing, but pretty typical museum cafe pricing. read more

I love when I can get good food at a museum. To avoid waiting 15 minutes for a table, we sat outside in the sun with our coats on and enjoyed the November sun over the river. Some tables had heaters, which we would have needed if we were in the shade. We had the bacon, lettuce, apple, cheddar and brussels sprouts salad and a bowl of the chicken tortilla soup. The salad was good, but it wasn't what I expected. There were just a handful of brussels on top of the salad. The soup was excellent: great flavors and textures. The chicken was perfectly cooked. We also had lattes which arrived after our food and were pretty bitter. That was a bit disappointing. We were going to walk the High Line afterwards, but it was in the shade by then, and our waitress recommended a walk along the Hudson. How on earth can ANYONE think that that hostess is fit for the position? The person who hired that woman really needs to rethink their evaluation criteria. I arrived at the café with my family at 2pm on Memorial Day. My mother-in-law was not feeling well, and we took some time to decide if it would be a good idea for her to be outside in the heat. I smiled at the hostess and said we would need a minute, and she passive aggressively looked and let out a light sigh, as if we were breaking some sacred museum café rule. Note that there was no one waiting in line. It felt as if we were bothering her, or as if we were getting into a snobby rich playboy club in the Meatpacking, which I'm sure is not what the Whitney wants. After a few minutes, she asked us if we had reached a conclusion (again, passive aggressively), we said we had, and said she'd call us in 10 minutes. Her attitude was that of an impatient 15-year-old brat. I told the woman who was showing people to their tables the hostess had been rude, and she apologized on her behalf and went back to her position, right beside the hostess. I believe she mentioned our conversation to her. Because of that bad first impression, we decided to give up on our table, and when we were on our way out, both hostess and the other employee were giggling. I approached the hostess and said she had been very rude, and she responded she wasn't in a confrontational tone. I left it at that, went downstairs, and wrote a comment card, which is yet to be responded. I will definitely go back to the Whitney because their collection is amazing, and all the other employees were not only very well trained and nice, but also super helpful when they overheard me complain about that episode. However, while the café insists on hiring spoiled, unprofessional people with a teenage attitude, I won't go past the 7th floor. P.S.: Reading other comments here on Yelp, I noticed I was not the only one who thinks the hostess, who is supposed to welcome customer, is actually sending them away. UPDATE: After filling out a complaint form at the museum, and emailing their HR, the only response I got was that my message was sent to whoever is in charge of the restaurant. Every dish we tried was delicious! We enjoyed the chilled carrot soup on this hot summer day ($8 only! Very reasonable!). The soft drinks were delicious as well! The strawberry one was light and refreshing. The mango-lime was unique; never had anything like it before. It was a little thicker in consistency somewhat like a lassi. Even the ($4) potato chips were served with cheese that made it better than any other chips I've had in a restaurant before. All of this with a panoramic view of Manhattan as a backdrop! A truly COSMIC experience: Unlike the Museum itself, which seems to subscribe to "the MORE IS MORE" philosophy, the Studio Cafe at the Whitney understands that "less is more.' I STUMBLED on the Cafe, after a great experience looking at the Motley exhibit and before I went into psychedelic overload. The Menu is just PERFECT: i had 'toast' no, not your basic slices of Challah burned to a crisp from my inexpert toasting skills, but GOURMET 'toast' of artic char, SMOKED, celery root puree and red cabbage. I wanted to try the meatloaf and kale combo, oh who am I kidding I wanted everything on the menu, but time would not allow. The cappuccino was expertly brewed by Aaron and I had a wonderful talk withJulie Travis, who is a first rate general manager of the Studio Cafe. I KNOW how important it is to have someone overseeing a restaurant and who can understand food, the Chef, presentation, etc. I was totally dumbfounded by the excellence of the restaurant and did not know the Chef had recently won the James Beard award, which is richly deserved. Tried taking out the triple chocolate cookie back in 2015 and they unsurprisingly refused. At that point it was $4 a la carte, rather than the $8 with milk version. Unfortunately in 2016 the same cookie is now $7 without milk, and really really overrated. They're also still a tipping establishment unlike other USHG/Danny Meyer spots, which surprised us given how weak the service we received was. read more
