Stumptown Coffee is an institution in the coffee world and has been around for a long time. You might've seen their product on shelves, beans/ground coffee that never "expire." I have to be honest, I had my doubts. As popular as they are, sometimes the early succeeding brands/institutions get success early and tend to not meet the current standard of excellence/modernity. Stumptown proved me wrong! I stopped by for a cup and asked for my typical cappuccino, and it was definitely one of the best I've had in the city. The texture was perfect; the espresso and steamed milk married each other beautifully into one homogeneous texture. The espresso had a distinct flavor, not shy - bold, savory, rich. It was the perfect size, and I hadn't had a cup like that in a while, though I've been searching. Really excellent job - and I can see why they're still successful. Keep it up Stumptown, you're awesome! read more

Cute coffee shop with some indoor seating. I had one of their seasonal specials which was sugar and spice latte. It was tasty and something I do not think I ever really had before. Baristas were nice and told me what was in this drink. Chill atmosphere. read more

After suffering through the worst $10 cup of coffee of my life just now, I had a revelation about who actually deserves my money for an overpriced vanilla latte. Which inspired me to do my civil duty and come on here to tell the people of Yelp: the answer is, and always will be, Stumptown Coffee Roasters. Every single sip is exactly what it should be: creamy, perfectly balanced, that ideal balance between bitter and sweet. The location right next to the park makes it even better. Grab your drink, step outside, and suddenly you're on a walk with something delicious in your hand and a little more appreciation for being alive. I really enjoyed this cozy little coffeehouse. The inside is decorated really nicely with great mood lighting for a first date or just some catching up some emails. The coffee is really good and the way that it's brewed really eliminates the bitter taste so it makes a smooth cup of coffee. This coffee shop is one of my go to whenever I'm in the area. read more

Needed an early opening so went here for coffee- cortado was good, regular coffee sub par/ the coffee covers are thin and loose so watch for the top popping off. The vegan carrot muffin was amazing. Staff was friendly 630a opening. read more

Very cozy location with a very good amount of indoor seating. I got an iced chai latte and it had a good flavor a mix of sweet and spicy which I love in a chai. My friend got the iced matcha latte and I also tried a few sips- it was very milked down and we could barely taste the matcha flavor. Got the almond croissant as well and it was delicious! It had a marzipan filling and it was fantastic! Perfectly crisp and fluffy! read more

I stopped in for a quick espresso. I was told a shot ($4) is always pulled as double - good to know! I was able to order pretty quickly, and it hit the spot - made to perfection. This location is sleek and bright - fancy hipster. It feels like a nice oasis and place to hang a while. All the tables were full around noon. Lots of beverage items are available to grab and go are available at the front right in front of the door. read more

I stumbled upon this coffee shop with my friend a Saturday afternoon. I got a hot vanilla latte with oat milk. It felt nice to sip on something warm. There aren't that many tables/seating. My friend and I ended up gathering 2 chairs and sat at the back of the coffee shop. The staff were super friendly. For Valentine's Day, they had postcards for customers that they would have mailed out! Sadly, they ran out of postcards so I couldn't participate in this initiative. read more

I got the latte. The location was nice and the coffee was good. It was a bit expensive at ~$7 with tax/tip. I didn't like how the cashier was intensely looking at the screen to see how much i tipped. The staff was a bit cold but they got my order out fairly quickly read more

Came by for coffee the other day and it was a world class experience. Staff was super cordial. Ordered the small mocha and it was a perfect tiny small size. The temperature was perfect for consumption, the espresso was smooth, and the chocolate wasn't too sweet. There was plenty of foam and the latte art was excellent! They take credit cards! Stumptown was a 1 minute walk away from our hotel, and was located in a really convenient and nice location. Their storefront was really nice and they have several tables for outside seating and around 5 tables for indoor seating. The interior is also super cute and the lighting and plants add to the vibe. The store wasn't super crowded when we went, but most of the tables are usually occupied. They have pastries and tea like matcha too. I came here a total of 3 times and got the vanilla latte twice and the cold brew with oat milk once. The vanilla latte was vanilla-y and not too sweet with an almost warm nutty flavor to it. It was definitely my favorite thing here. The cold brew with oat milk is not sweetened but the coffee is definitely high quality. I'd definitely recommend getting the vanilla latte and I immediately purchased one of their coffee grounds from Target since I was addicted. Definitely recommend, their coffee is excellent!! read more

Even though I drink my fair share of coke brews during the summer time, I'm not big on the fancier chains. I was on my way to barre and was super early and decided to stop here for a cold brew without knowing that this was a well known national establishment. The inside was beautifully decorated but there was no option for indoor seating, which was also maybe why the air conditioner wasn't on when it was almost above 90 degrees outside. They had some good outdoor seating. I got a large cold brew with oat milk and a pump of simple syrup. It was over 6 dollars and I had to double check that this was indeed a large serving of coffee. The coffee was average. It was definitely not worth over 6 dollars. So far, my favorite cold brew this summer has been Proof! read more

Stumptown serves drinks for the soul! Perfect spot to hit to start your day right with a nice cup of Joe, especially when the cold is piercing through your 3+ layers of clothing. My friend insisted we visit Stumptown on our NY trip and, although I rarely drink coffee, I obliged. The ambiance inside is inviting, warm, and welcoming. If we didn't have places to be, we could've stayed for hours. The staff were so friendly, talked us through the menu, and gave us great recommendations. I chose the Hazelnut Butter Mocha which was absolutely delicious. Probably one of the best cups of coffee I've ever had the pleasure of drinking. I'm glad I gave Stumptown a shot and would highly recommend anyone to stop by, you won't regret it! read more

Had to wait 30mins for one drink over dramatic staff. My drink was taken by another customer and it had to be remade. No problem. And then I receive a wrong drink - a chai latte instead of a latte. I tell the barista and she insists it is the oat latte. Then she goes on to tell her co workers how rude I am and leaves the bar to get a fresh air. Then comes back and continues to talk loudly how she is having a terrible time here. And even after that I had to wait another ten minutes to get my drink that was somehow pushed to the last by her coworker - no latte art just a pour. Lady with a voice of a goat- it is not your fault that someone took my order but it is not my fault either. I know the staff is not friendly here but talking about customers on the bar like that over serving a drink and purposefully delaying the reorder is unprofessional at another level. I'm sure a busy day at a busy location like this can be an overwhelming experience but this case made me think of a gen-z employee throwing a tantrum over a simple task meme. read more

Not sure if was the end of the day bottom of the barrel leftovers but seriously bummed and embarrassed after telling my friend from Chicago this place has good coffee. read more

~ Here for the vibes ~ I would definitely give this place 5 stars for pretty good coffee and an excellent cafe. Every place has a different taste to their coffee, especially when they have an array of roasts. The flavor of their coffee when I visited was thick and earthy, and I quite like the taste!!! It's not my favorite but it's still enjoyable and tasty. They don't charge extra for "alternative" milks either which is really nice and makes being green or easy on the stomach a lot more accessible LOL. Of course the coffee and drinks taste pretty good, and of course they can be expensive since it's more of a fancy coffee shop, but it's worth it, so is the beautiful environment and atmosphere that you get to drink it in. The cafe interior is beautiful, decorative, and warm; the coziness of this place is unmatched. It's like old library or uncle bookworm's home study! Super nice. I worked there for about two hours and I got a table to my self, and was able to charge my devices while working. There are a few wall chargers along the seating side of the cafe. And it's a wonderful place to work. It's got nice music and atmosphere and people coming and going; it's only mildly distracting because it did get busy and I'm assuming gets been more so. But you can still listen to music and get things done. Whatever. The baristas are pretty nice, and fun to watch, there is a cooler for food and drinks in the front that you can grab and buy things additionally; and in the back there are shelves with cute merch! I bought two cups! They also have wifi too so don't worry about getting connected! It's a super cute cafe with pretty nice coffee, I would definitely go more often! TLDR: old bookstore vibe in a cafe, cute interior and exterior, pretty good coffee, a bit expensive, but otherwise great place. read more

I'm familiar with stumptown being from Boston. If you know tatte, that cafe uses their coffee. It was okay, not amazing, the oat milk latte I got. There are so many places to get coffee in nyc and because I don't live super close and it wasn't amazing, I'm not itching to go back. I was a little surprised because tatte lattes are really good. They use chobani oat milk, but stumptown uses oatly, so maybe that's the difference. Or the coffee blend? Basically, okay cup of coffee. It wasn't packed and there were some places to sit with outlets which is a huge plus for the location. TLDR: good place with decent coffee and study space read more

I had an amazing salted maple latte here, but I took a star off for price ($7.50 after tax for a 12oz drink)! The coffee here is quality! I wish there was some more sitting space since it's packed and there's a lot of empty standing room. I like how there's free water and cups out too. read more

Strong and delicious Cold Brew. After a long day of being a tourist in NYC, we stopped in Stumptown Coffee Roasters for a late afternoon fix. We were just walking by on our way back to where I was staying. It was calling my name, and I couldn't resist. I didn't want to resist :-) It's located very close to Washington Square Park and NYU. I have a feeling most people stumble across this location while walking to their destinations. Lots of seating inside, and it doesn't look like a location where there are a whole lot of students hanging out. Restrooms available too. read more

I had the original in Portland and loved this place. They have the hands-down best coffee. If you think the blue bottle is good, you will love this place even more. Their coffee bean is so good and we always get a pack to bring back home and it tastes just as good. I am jealous NYC has couple of locations throughout the city. If I had the money I will open one in Houston. Cute spot near Washington Square Park-- checked it out at the suggestion of an actor I admire. Great vibe and a friendly barista. I'm familiar with Stumptown as a chain, so I more or less knew what to expect, but their nitro cold brew was something else entirely. Tis for the brave of heart! It kept me buzzed for several hours, so have lots of water if you get it!! My partner went with a standard iced latte, which was also pretty good. This was a pleasant visit and I hope to be back one day. :) read more

One of the employees here was extremely rude to me when I went in a few weeks back. I stared in her direction as I was acknowledging how cool the shop was and she asked me if I had a problem and got extremely defensive for no reason at all. She then told me to move from where I was standing while I was waiting for my coffee (I'm assuming just to add on to the situation - again for no reason at all) I don't usually care or react when someone acts this way as I know we all have those days. However, this was very uncalled for and I will not be returning to this location. As a shop owner in the city myself I was pretty disappointed with the service here. There were some great things I liked about this place. One, I liked the Almond Milk Latte & Almond Croissant I ordered. Not happy that they didn't have an oven to warm up my croissant but it was tasty all the same. Drinking a latte at a roasting company is amazingly tastier than from an ordinary coffee shop. The latte I ordered was so sweet with no added sugar and smooth. I was very impressed. The meters in the area are the worst. $3.50 an hour, ridiculous. But it is NYC so it is something to expect but still, WOW. read more

I've worked in restaurants and bars long enough to understand that staff drinking happens, but this was on another level entirely. I came in with a group of friends and one of the bartenders, Will, was so visibly drunk that it made the entire experience uncomfortable. Slurred speech, wobbling behind the bar, taking orders while chewing food with his mouth open -- it was honestly embarrassing to watch. He looked like he absolutely did not want to be there. At one point, my group had been trying to get his attention for another round for quite a while while he stood around talking with coworkers. We then watched staff take a shot together, and when he finally came over he burped mid-conversation and literally had whatever he had just been drinking dribbling down his neckbeard. That was the moment where the whole thing went from unprofessional to just gross. What made it worse was that it didn't seem isolated to one employee. Throughout the night we watched staff openly taking shots and drinking behind the bar like it was a house party instead of a business. There's a difference between bar culture and complete lack of professionalism, and this crossed that line hard. One of the friends I was with actually frequents the DUMBO location and said that the last time she was there, the same bartender also seemed intoxicated, which makes this feel less like a bad night and more like an ongoing issue. The DUMBO location itself is in an amazing spot, which makes it even more disappointing. But ownership seriously needs to get control of what's going on there before someone gets hurt or the place develops a reputation for having drunk staff on the clock. Unfortunately, the experience was uncomfortable enough that my girlfriends and I won't be coming back. I genuinely hope the employee mentioned gets help if this is a regular thing, because nobody should be working service in that condition.
