We had a fantastic time at Stumpy's Hatchet House celebrating my wife's birthday. There were 10 of us and they accommodated us perfectly. John was our host and was always available for questions, additional training and encouragement. He made it fun. We reserved 2 hours, brought our own snacks, drinks and ordered pizza delivery. So much fun! 1,001st review! Came here for my birthday with a group of friends and everyone had a blast. You might think 2 hours is a long time to throw hatchets but I assure you it's not. The first hour will be getting used to throwing and just getting it to stick on the board. Hitting the bullseye isn't the hard part - it's getting it to stick. I must have hit the bullseye 10 times with the hatchet handle. Finally I got the hang of it and the second hour was now more about where it was going to land on the target. When you first arrive, you get a quick tutorial on the rules and how to throw. I suggest signing the waivers online before you arrive so you don't have to do it once there. Next, you are brought to your pit which has two lanes and targets for throwing. Ours was a fairly small area. We had 9 people so there was some maneuvering that needed to occur so the thrower would have enough space. The people who work there circulate around to give you pointers while throwing. It's BYO beer, wine and snacks. The husband said he saw a sign about one 6-pack per person, but no one checked our cooler and counted what we had. We brought 12 beers and a bottle of wine for 9 people so we were safe anyway. Overall, it was a great experience. I'd definite go back. Just wished they offered a Groupon or something similar. Axe throwing seemed like a really off concept to me, but it wasn't that bad. It was definitely hard but once you actually hit bulls eye it was kind of fun! I would really suggest bringing some beer and food (and a fun group of people) to this because it can get a bit boring when you're just waiting around for your turn. My friend had her birthday here and we did it for 2 hours, and I only got bulls eye once. It got repetitive and I was over it after about an hour. All in all, cool concept but maybe they should have some other activities there too! read more

Had a great experience here! The people working were attentive and showed us a few ways to throw. Very nice and didn't give us a hard time about having our masks off in our area though we did keep them on when moving around the rest of the space. Would've loved to have a fresh board as the guy working was practicing while nobody was there but it didn't prevent us from having a good time there. Rarely will I concede to another but Alex B's review is almost spot on... so everything he said but: #1: I will be back. #2: I'll go four stars instead of 2 do to the fun I had. I can also say ... #3: I had though most of the advise the staff gave was useless till one staff member said, "Think of the Florida Seminoles and the tomahawk chop..." once I adopted that approach almost every hatchet I threw stuck to the board. #4: I signed the waiver but I agree (with Alex B.) this is problematic. There were a few times the party behind us were too close to our area. Two of the times I swung back with the hatchet and had I not been cautious I might have struck someone who wasn't in their area/not paying attention. All areas of this place should be fenced off to avoid issues as I almost have no doubt someone will eventually get hurt. Still, a ton of fun! Just watch out and drink responsibility. read more

My 23 year old daughter got hit in her hand by an axe that was thrown by a group of drunk women. The axe somehow was thrown up and over the cage. Thank God she wasn't hit in the head or by the blade. Drunk girls were not kicked out, and the staff gave my daughter a $100 gift card as an apology. WTF? I wasn't there or I would have gone ballistic. I smell a lawsuit read more

This place is really great! I could be wrong, but I believe this was one of the first (if not the first) places to offer hatchet throwing before it became a national craze! A big group of 20 of so of us came for a friends birthday on a Friday evening in December, and it was so fun! When you arrive, you can check in, pay for your time, and drop off any of your BYO-ed beverages with the helpful staff. I think they store them in a cooler for you until your bay is ready. We arrived a little early and hung out in their waiting area until 8:15 (reservations were at 8:30). The staff were pros and turned over the "rooms" in lightening speed while we were signing our waivers and receiving a brief safety orientation. We had a largish group and were given the entire back area - it was perfectly secluded with a couple tables which were promptly laiden with food, and coolers which were promptly filled with beverages. We brought in cupcakes and a cake, tons of appetizers (guac, salsa, chips, etc), and other foods to nibble on in addition to all the booze. The staff was really friendly and helpful! We were given another orientation into hatchet throwing, and detailed demonstration/explanation of how to throw - then we were left to our own devices! They made a board for the birthday girl, complete with the date and a 'Happy Birthday' message from the Stumpy's staff. A totally unnecessary yet thoughtful touch! We had the bays from 8:30-10:30pm, and another group headed into our area promptly at 10:31! It was $40/person (so $80 for my husband and myself) for the 2 hours. We had such a great time here! Came with a party of 5, everyone who worked there (including the resident golden doodle, Woody) was so nice and helpful. We can't wait to come back and bring more people! Their merchandise is awesome, we all bought something on our way out. Really cool place, definitely nothing else like it! $40 for two hours per person is a bit pricy but not too crazy. If you get tired of hatchet throwing they provide other fun games like mega jenga, checkers, card games and so on. The only down side was the pizza we had delivered there. Stumpy's provides different menus of local restaurants and the pizza we ordered wasn't great. Next time we will bring some snacks or order from somewhere else. read more

Fantastic place to go with friends. Went for the first time today. I would recommend groups of 4 to 6. 21 and up only. Sessions are two hours. You'd think it would be a bit much, but it's just right. It gives beginners time to learn, and it also gives everyone time to take turns, as well as take a break and eat food. If you throw for 10 min straight without rotating you will break definitely a sweat. If you haven't eaten, you will all probably get hungry, but they got that taken care of. Snacks and drinks are very affordably priced. As well, ordering local takeout is encouraged by the very friendly staff. There's a great pizza place nearby that delivers to the front desk. You can eat right there by your throwing lane. There's really no reason to not do this at least once. Its $20 a person during happy hour, $40 regular. Everyone can throw an ax. It's all about technique, not strength. The atmosphere is very laid back and the staff are really great people. There are many places to sit, so if you have 4-6 people like I said above, it lets some friends play/rotate while others rest or cool themselves (you really work up a sweat). All around it's a good time. If the idea of throwing axes with friends even remotely interests you, you should really enjoy yourself. read more

Had a group of 7 and we had a awesome experience! I reserved the 2 hour slot ahead of time and was worth it. When you arrive they give you two wrist bands which are paid for from the deposit to reserve the "lane". We brought beer and they took it right away and put it on ice for us and was waiting when we got to the lane. Instructor and staff very friendly! They checked on us throughout and offered tips. 2 hours were enough time for everyone to throw many times! No air conditioning though. Was so disappointed in the new manager Durante?. We go every couple of weeks. Hav e always felt this was 5 stars.....in one word he changed it to 2. The rest of the staff amazing, not him. Paid for the wing fling date night which is an hour of throwing beer and wings. Got out wing order and beer order then 30 minutes later was told that new manager wasn't doing that anymore and oh well, spend 20 minutes getting a refund and re ringing the hour of throwing....first time staff heard wasn't happening and he told me HE the manager HE can do what he wants. Great spot! We went for my dad's birthday and had a blast--and everyone kept their limbs! Our family usually goes bowling (which I suck at)--this was a fun departure (and I still sucked). 2 hours for 9 people was perfect. We ate, drank, cut up, all without feeling rushed and still had plenty chances to throw. We had so much fun that we could have done another hour. To my colored people...don't come late. If you're planning a party, just tell all the black people you're starting 30 min - 1 hr before actual go time. My cousins learned the hard way. Otherwise, the staff was nice and they did give the planks to the birthday boys. Only annoying thing was that they threw my plastic bags away that I brought my food in and I had nothing to carry the food out with. (I went a little overboard with food so I reaaaaally needed at least a few of my bags back. Oh well though.) Can't give it 5 stars because it's kinda pricey. Should probs be 15/hr and 10 for people to just watch. I don't even party$15 to get into a bar. Still fun for a group though. We came here in August to take my cousin for his birthday. It was nice drive from North Jersey, but it was absolutely worth it. You throw hatchets around! Very primal, but it's super entertaining. You can bring food and (I think) drinks. Aside from the entertainment value, I can see it being therapeutic for some lol. You can get annoyed by the many successive failures of the hatchet not landing right or sticking, but the staff is extremely helpful and patient. They will walk you through techniques and give you tips based on your form and technique. This would be a great place to come with a group. Came here a few months ago for a friends birthday party and had a blast! While I agree the idea is not new, and over-priced for something you can do in your backyard, I will say it yielded a lot of fun! And for that, it gets 5 stars. Atmosphere: LOVEEE the atmosphere and décor in this place. From the moment you walk in you feel like you are set in woods ready for a campfire. The décor has a lot of wood, games made out of wood, wood walls, wood tables, wood accents...mix that with the some greenery and black and red fabric, and I feel super cozy. The space is not that large and when a lot of people are there, it can be quite crowded but nothing so overwhelming it would prevent me from going back. There is a main "living room" setting that breaks up the game areas which I think is a nice thing to have. Leather chairs, large table...you feel at home. Prices: If you are less than 4 people, it typically runs about $20 a person without tax for only 1 hour session. If you have more than 4 people, you have to do a 2 hour session and it becomes $40 a person without tax. It is a tad expensive for throwing an axe into some wood at a place that doesn't supply drinks or food but its not so expensive that I wouldn't go back to enjoy a fun night out with friends. If you don't plan on throwing, you still have to pay 15$ which I think is ridiculous. Food, Drink, and Rooms: This place is BYOB. They do have a small area where you can grab some waters,ice teas and snacks such as chips etc, but I suggest bringing your own drinks and especially foods. Each area typically has some sort of table for you to set up with foods of your choice. We had two stations with a table in between and we filled it to the max with stuff. Without it, we would have been hungry for sure. You work up an appetite throwing those axes. Safety: We asked the worker there if they had any major injuries to which he told us no thankfully; however, I can see how this can get dangerous real fast if people aren't aware of their surroundings. With a lot of people, it can be crowded and if you ware trying to walk passed another station while someone is throwing, the axe can unintentionally come quite close to your head. There were several times someone either almost hit me or my friends, or I had to look around before I threw to make sure no one was near. It was also common for someone to forget out of habit not to walk down after throwing, not realizing the person next to you is flinging a sharp axe. Add alcohol to that mix and I'm honestly shocked nothing has happened yet. Oddly though, despite the looking around here and there, I didn't feel unsafe to the point where I wouldn't go. Experience: Despite being able to do this activity in your backyard, you are paying for the fun/fad of it and it is definitely fun. It does get tiring after awhile but 2 hours goes by very fast when you have a party of about 20 people. Even with all those people and 2 stations, which basically has 4 boards total, you weren't waiting around forever for a turn. It gave you a nice break from throwing as well as some good throwing time. When you walk in, you are given a brief overview and safety course but its nothing legit. Its basically a worker telling you not to be a drunken fool and watch out for others, go one at a time, don't walk down while someone is throwing etc...Common sense stuff thrown in with a 2 sec tutorial of how to throw. You sign a waiver and are on your way. It took awhile for myself to get a hang of what to do but eventually I did get it. I was able to get a couple bull's-eyes and was proud of myself haha. There is also a large jenga game and a checkers game as well; however, we didn't choose to play with them. At the end of the 2 hours, we took a nice group photo and they even gave the birthday girl the middle plank from our station. I thought that was a really awesome memento. Went with a group of 5 people this past weekend. The decor of this place is designed for a lumberjack theme and since you are throwing hatchets, it fits. This is adults only. The place is clean and well maintained. The staff was friendly. You have to make a reservation online before going. Groups of 4 or more have to reserve for a minimum of 2 hours for $40+ tax. When you come in you have to sign a release while they go over the rules. They then take you to the throwing pits and explain how to throw. They also re-emphasize the safety rules. They gave us a bottle of water per person and gave us some pretzels. They have a snack shack to buy drinks and other snacks. This is BYOB and they limit it to beer and wine. We brought a cooler but it looked like the facility provided another group with a large ice bucket for their beers. Throwing the hatchets took a little getting used to, but eventually we started hitting the target. It was a lot of fun for a reasonable price. The only criticism was no air conditioning. Since this place is new I am hoping they will have the AC up and running soon. We will definitely go back. read more

What a fun idea! We were in town visiting and our family took us here for the afternoon. I'm not going to lie, I was a little scared in the beginning because I am not the one to like these kind of things, but this was so much fun! I even got a bullseye! Everyone in our group got one so I would say that was a successful outing. You get to ring the bell overtime you make one, so you can brag a little to everyone else in the building. What a fun place! Came here with a Group of 6 people and that was the right size for this group. Anywhere between 4-8 people is a good size. The cost is about $40 per person for the 2 hours. They set you up with a 2 lane hatchet throw and start you off with a few minutes of safety and about a 5-7 minute lesson. From then on you just throw and try a few different techniques. 2 hours is definitely enough for a group that size and even enough time to play a few games as well. The place is BYOB but limited to 1 - 6 pack per person. You can bring in your own snacks and food but they did provide us with pretzels to much on. Plenty of room to sit down and hang out. What an amazing time! I had a fundraising event last night with about 30 people. Everyone raved how much fun they had and what a nice place it was. I wasn't sure people were actually going to get into the axe throwing but they did. The staff was FANTASTIC. Super helpful to me as the organizer and to all of the guests. This was a really fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon! They recommend you make a reservation, which we didn't know but luckily they were able to get us a spot with very minimal wait. The atmosphere is very cool and laid back, they had couches, picnic tables, and board games spread throughout. It's also BYOB and You can order food to the establishment. You get your own area with two targets. I think the timing depends on your party size, but honestly an hour was enough - throwing hatchets is harder than it looks! Came here one Saturday afternoon while out of state with some friends for a wedding. Needless to say, none of us were expecting to have such a fun time! We called ahead and were able to do a walk-in since it was not busy at the time. We payed $20/person for an hour. (Can also do $40/person for two hours). Started off my signing a release form as well as going over some rules. The guy showed us where to go and taught us how to throw the axe for a bit. With some practice, we all pretty much got the hang of it! The hour went by super quick, two hours is definitely recommended. Atmosphere is a great theme for the activity, more of a lumberjack look. There were couches and tables that you can sit out while two people threw the axe. There was a snack station where you can person snacks, water to soda. It is also a BYOB place! As we were from out of state and heading home, we did not bring any alcohol. All employees were fantastic! One of the owners, the wife, had come and introduced herself and took time out of her schedule to thank us for coming. She explained to us that they just opened last month and are quite busy at night (where you would definitely need a reservation). Overall, I cannot think of any negative thing to say about this place. Would definitely recommend for a night out with friends or date night! Fun time for what it was, but I won't be back. There's a 2-hour minimum, $40 per person price tag, but I felt like the experience was best satisfied in 30-60 minutes. I got bored pretty quick and found myself in "keep throwing to get my money's worth" mode. Very loud. The targets are made of dry 2x4's but should ideally be something softer. Likely not realistic for their location and operating expenses but it would definitely change the game. One of our targets needed tightening multiple times as it kept falling apart. Another we considered "hard-level" as it was massively beat up already. The guy who demonstrated to us how to correctly throw could not get his axe to stick in 3 attempts. He then micromanaged our techniques every few minutes. Eventually I found the best was 'ignore him, and find what works for you.' I'd recommend he change his approach from "No, do it this way!" to "How's it going?" Lastly their lengthy waiver that you are rushed to sign releases them from liability if another party injures you. In an axe-throwing place located in a tight boutique-sized space where young people are visibly getting drunk, something did not feel right about signing away their liability - so I didn't. Luckily they did not police the waiver signing policy and I still participated. read more

This place is AWESOME! If you're looking for a fun date night or way to spend some time with friends this is it! The price was very reasonable and the place is BYOB, so it's fun and affordable. The instructors do a really effective job of explaining methodology and visit you a few times to check in. They do not hover and you can have a great time without feeling lame because you can't make a bullseye. (It's hard!)
