I got a small bowl of gumbo and garlic bread. Definitely good comfort food. Service was good--our waiter filled our glasses quickly. Ambiance was decent as well.

Solid Creole place in Durham. Great ambiance! It is such a cozy spot with a real sense of community. There's a dining room without music for a quieter meal, and another with live music where people dance, socialize, and enjoy the night together. The crowd skews a bit older, which makes it feel extra wholesome and welcoming. Service was warm and attentive, and our food came out quickly and hot. We highly recommend the jambalaya -- generous portion and fantastic flavor! The seafood plate was also excellent; both the catfish and shrimp were cooked perfectly. All the appetizers were enjoyable. The only disappointment was the smoked brisket plate (surprisingly), which was quite dry and flavor was just okay (the brisket tasted better in the empanada). We will rather try the fried chicken next time! We stole glances at other tables and the chicken looked amazing! We got multiple dessert (big dessert menu, yay), and the bread pudding was the standout. The other desserts were fun, though they had more of a "fair food" vibe.

We were so impressed by the food here! Me being a huge fan of NOLA and visiting every couple years, I find myself not only missing the creole food but also looking to fill that hankering with local spots here in NC, few have ever come close to this until succotash! The decor and ambience is wonderful with a lovely outdoor patio to enjoy good weather. The staff was warm, friendly and knowledgeable, across the board this spot is a winner!

Wow! We made reservations early on a Friday night in their back area. The restaurant is a remodeled home, and the rooms have been remodeled into a front area with a bar and some smaller tables, and a back area with mostly 4-tops that can be pushed together to accommodate 8 or so. It's cozy, but we never felt the other diners were "in our laps." The rooms are fitted with quality napkins (paper, not cloth) and metal utensils on the bare wood of the tables. Simple, but evokes an old world gathering place. The smells of woodsmoke and grilled meats had been tempting us since the parking lot. But the Weekend Special Seafood Gumbo grabbed us all. Due to rain and other delays, we finally totaled six, and five of us got the Seafood gumbo. It was amazing. (The non-spicy diner enjoyed their Southern Fried Chicken, as well!) This being a Creole place, things are spicy. Sad that there's no liquor license, but a crisp IPA was almost as good as a Sazerac or a Vieux Carre. Everyone enjoyed their food immensely, and the lady who came in to sing after we had eaten and were getting dessert just made the evening even better. Bluesy interpretations of everything from Van Morrison to George Benson and off to parts unknown. Dessert for several of us was the Bananas Foster, which arrived as an empanada, rather than a crêpe. The filling was pure banana goodness, but we were all taken aback by the presentation. In the end, it was amazing, especially with a cup of decaf Cafe Bruello (unless I miss my guess!). Tell the waiter to start brewing before placing the dessert orders, though, because the coffee takes a bit. We had to keep from eating ours until the coffee arrived.

My family roots come from New Iberia, Louisiana and I must say, this is the most authentic tasting food that is centered around creole culture that I've had in all of the places I've lived. The food was filled with flavorful spices, the atmosphere has colorful jazz/music themed paintings and art pieces. I was pleasantly surprised by the deciduous meal and so was my friend who is from New York and not as familiar with Creole cuisine. The staff from the bar and the kitchen were friendly, welcoming and very pleasant despite a very busy restaurant. It was also wonderful to see the way they worked together in the kitchen to create such delicious meals. I will absolutely be back to try a new plate!

Succotash holds a special place in our hearts as we've celebrated a lot of special moments with succotash and the food is always good. The catfish/shrimp never disappoints, the chicken is crispy but juicy but the citrus broccoli and the smash fried potato's are my favorites sides.

We visited the Duke University Chapel this morning and chatted with the docent, Larry. He asked about our plans for lunch and suggested Succotash. Boy are we glad we took his advice. I have the smoked brisket plate. Twelve hours of smoke leaves delicious, melt in your mouth beef. Incredible. The plate comes with potatoes (brilliant), pickles and coleslaw. I added a cup of seafood gumbo which was as good as any I've had in New Orleans. My wife had a salad and a side of burnt ends. We finished with the cherry bourbon cake. A great meal. Excellent service as well. A beautiful Saturday afternoon on the patio with a fresh local IPA and a delicious meal. Awesome

My husband and I came here for a low key anniversary dinner on a Saturday and really enjoyed the food! There are different dining areas, and we chose the one in the back, which is pretty quiet and empty until the musicians start setting up. They start playing at around 7pm, but during setup they were super sweet and had lovely conversations with us in between our courses. We will choose a later time to see them perform next time! On to the food: we started off with the succotash appetizer with brisket. The brisket was such a nice addition to a hearty start of our meal! It was delicious. We also got the hot honey cauliflower which was also great where the hot honey was definitely there but not overpowering and was quite a large portion. I had to pace myself so I didn't get too full before my main course. For our mains my husband got the beef brisket plate and I got the fried oyster po boy. Everything was delicious, but I kept stealing some of my husband's brisket as it was not overcooked at all and could rival some of our local barbecue joints! For dessert we were hoping to get the bread pudding, but it was so popular it got sold out during lunch already! So we got the Crème brûlée which was topped with pistachios and raspberries. It was a lovely dessert and we left feeling SO filled. Looking forward to coming back and trying other dishes! Also, shout out to Anthony our server who was super attentive! He made sure to check on us multiple times and cleared away our plates whenever we were done with each course to ensure we had space for all of our food!

I have been wanting to try Succotash for well over a year. Everytime I suggested it, someone would ultimately select a different restaurant. So last night my husband and I wanted to eat out and it was just us two, and I say HEY let's try Succotash. We drove right past the place without realizing it, so it might have been that we were engrossed in our convo and missed it, but to me, it's easy to miss. We were greeted warmly. I LOVE it when a restaurant acknowledges your presence but also seem geniunely happy that you came. My husband is Louisiana born and raised so the decor and ambiance definitely felt like home for him. The owner we were told is from Baton Rogue. We had a great server, so shout out to X, friendly, warm knowledgeable, attentive but not inserting himself into our evening. He nailed it! Now the food is one of those experiences where you take a bite and you look at each other and your eyes widen. Shut the Front Door! it was GUD. We had the succotash topped with grilled eggplant. I am pescatarian/vegetarian. I KNOW that is not going to sound good to many,so FIRST thing to know is you can top your succotash with meat, per the menu if you want to, and SECOND it was amazing with no topping at all. I consider myself a great cook, but that succotash was other worldly. PERIODT! My husband had the seafood gumbo, and I just tasted a wee bit of the roux because it had sausage in it so I wasn't going to bust up my stomach to eat a spoonful, but the flavor was dead on. We make gumbo because my husband and family are from Louisiana so this is a common event/holiday dish. It would be unfair to compare this with our homemade versions BUT for a restaurant this authentic and very good. Better than any I have tasted in the triangle so far. We also had fried oysters and they were tender, fried to perfection with a side of roumalade sauce. My husband had a catfish po boy, with voodoo chips and I had the catch of the day blackened. not one single thing to complain about. It was all smack our lips and call your Mama good. We were so full but then our fat butts closed out the night with a PEACH bread putting. We did take that home. We devoured it with whip cream later but who knew..peach bread pudding. Wow. I have No regrets and am not apologizing for the lbs I likely gained. It is RARE you go out and have a meal get that knocks it out the part like this. I highly recommend!

Succotash was on my list of places to try and they did not disappoint. We made a reservation for 7 on a Thursday and when we arrived we were greeted immediately. The place is cozy, warmly lit and unpretentious. It felt like the kind of place the regulars knew was a hidden gem. We ordered the Succotash as an appetizer and it was fresh, had a little kick and had just enough seasoning to let the vegetables shine on their own. It also came topped with your choice of eggplant or a protein and we chose the sausage which was so delicious. I will definitely get this next time I come back. I ordered the brisket sandwich with potatoes and it was delightful. The brisket was smoky and tender and the pickles and pickled onions tasted homemade and were perfect on the sandwich. The potatoes were seasoned perfectly and tender but had a slight crunch on the outside. The shrimp dinner came with potatoes and slaw and again the shrimp were cooked to perfection. Needless to say, I will be back to make my way through the menu.

Arrived for a solo dinner. There was a bit of a wait because the place was packed but I'm glad I waited. I decided on the brisket. It came out quickly, very smoky moist and perfectly seasoned. The potatoes were crispy soft on the inside and delicious. The slaw was crunchy and fresh, and I finished off with a nice desert (crème brûlée empanada) overall a great experience. Interior was very cute. I'll come back!

I was contemplating going to another restaurant in the area, but the weather was bad. So that led me to Succotash, and what a blessing that was! The spot is so cozy and just a perfect low-key vibe! I sat at the bar. Customer service was amazing. The young lady at the bar was so polite, friendly, and on point.   The sangria was so delicious. The gumbo was flavorful, and the rice was perfect once you mixed it into the gumbo. From the fish to the potatoes to the shrimp to the slaw and the pickled onions, everything was delicious. I enjoyed my meal! It made me so happy to have a great meal. The brisket was full of flavor, almost like juicy roast meets smoked brisket. The prices are reasonable. I am sure they get busy, but the food and sangria are worth it.

I recently came for the Sunday brunch and will definitely be back for dinner soon. Not to be dramatic but the food was aMaZiNg!We ordered the brisket and grits, gumbo and beingets and all were insanely good and very filling. The price was very reasonable for the amount of food you got as well. The vibes were very relaxed and the service was great. This spot is absolutely a hidden gem!

And I know that this place is literally call it's a Southern thing but can I mention how much I dislike drinking out of mason jars? We also orders charred jalapeno & sweet corn hushpuppies and frickles as an appetizer. I was VERY excited about my food. Y'all...the only thing that impressed me were the Frickles. Everything else was distinctly underwhelming. I also ordered Blackberry Betta Have My Money which was not that great. My SiL ordered a espresso martini that they said didn't come from a mix but she said it tasted like it was. The bathrooms were very clean. The decor and the vibe were great. Cute even. I really enjoyed that part of it. After dropping off our food, we never saw our waitress again unless we flagged her down for drink refills. It was especially frustrating since there was automatic gratuity added. And since the place wasn't that busy, it felt like she didn't feel the need to earn her automatic tip. Overall I was disappointed in my birthday dinner. I won't be coming back here.

For dinner I ordered the roasted chicken and the baked mac and cheese with bacon. The roasted chicken was juicy and tasty, and a bit sweet with the bourbon ginger and plum reduction, but the mac and cheese seemed dry and overcooked. We also ordered the buttermilk cheddar biscuits- that taste slightly undercooked (in a good way), so the texture was soft and chewy (and amazing). This is a little gem in Durham NC serv8ng up some down home cooking. They are a cafeteria style restraint serving up fresh to order fried chicken everyday along side a changing menu of food on the line. The day I went they were serving smothered pork chops, I jad to get the greens and huspuppies for my sides. The portions were crazy and they were generous with the gravy baby. Oh and I had to polish things off with that fresh banana pudding. Yall better stop playing and come down to chcien hut and get you a plate. The staff was full energy and we're genuinely friendly making it a personal experience for everyone. You could even tell that many regulars weee coming and going as the staff chopped it up with everyone there like they knew them. Great vibes and food to match, no wonder chicken hut has been such a staple in the community for so long.

A lovely woman there helps explain the process to those who look lost haha. So you go through the room to the right where there are dining tables and chairs and get in line to what looks like a buffet. 1 entree and 2 sides are included in your order, along with a drink your choice of either a roll or hush puppies. Dessert (cake) is extra. Pig's feet was $18.99 while smothered chicken with gravy was $17.99. Food selection changes daily. You get a ticket with the price, which you then take to pay at said counter. Everything was delicious. Wish we could have tried the oxtails (not available on the day we went) and fried chicken (sold out). The owner was serving huge portions to everyone. They were closing up and gifted us cake slices. Staff there were sweet :).

I did not know this place was here. Just started a new job off of TW Alexander, and looked on yelp…read morefor nearby restaurants for lunch. It's a southern thing popped up. I almost didn't go, because I thought this was the downtown Durham restaurant, which is nice, but parking nightmare. Glad I went, though. The food was solid. I had the fired chicken sandwhich and fries the first day, a buffalo chicken wrap the second day, and the smoked chicken wings the third day, yes, 3 in a row. That has to say something, especially for me. All lunch items were pretty spot on, although I like a little more vinegar in my slaw than most. That was remedied by the texas pete on the bar. The service staff were all hands on. If the bartender was not there, the manager or a back of the house person was always checking on me. Very nice staff. As far as the ambiance itself, nice setup. Good sized bar, nice big patio, clean indoor and restrooms... all in all, I could not ding them for anything. I need to go to check out the weekend brunch or dinner menu. I am sure that I will not be disappointed, however, I have been told to get to brunch before noon, as it gets very busy, also a good thing. Cheers. :)

We went to It's a Southern Thing on a Sunday morning around 9:30 and walked right in--no wait,…read morewhich honestly felt like a small miracle for brunch. Even better surprise: the patio was wide open and dog-friendly. Immediate bonus points. Service was great. She was friendly, attentive, and helpful with recommendations without being overbearing. I had the Shrimp & Grits, which came with plenty of large shrimp and really rich, flavorful grits. Definitely a solid choice. My date ordered the Blackstone Benedict -a sort of ham, poached eggs, and hollandaise, with breakfast potatoes and gluten-free bread. She was genuinely thrilled with it, which is saying something as she is a hollondaise stickler. By the time we were leaving, a line had started to build, so if you're planning a weekend brunch here, I'd recommend getting there on the earlier side. Parking is easy (big lot), and there's a grocery store right next door, which is surprisingly convenient. Overall, just a really easy, enjoyable brunch spot with good food, great service, and a relaxed vibe. We'll be back.
