After just having an Americano the day before at Cafe du Mondes in New Orleans this coffee didn't even come close. HOW STINKING CUTE IS THIS BUILDING!? That was my first impression. I stopped in after dropping my mama at the airport and was so taken with the decor. Sugar Browns has become my go-to spot for coffee and work away from the office. My standard selection is the eponymously named Sugar Brown Latte. Of course the coffees are great here and served by friendly baristas with a nice decorative top. This seems to be a requirement for a 5 star rating. Sugar Browns does all of the other things well - it is always remarkably clean. The building itself is a rarity in Lubbock - an old building restored with metal /tin decorative ceiling, plaster and wood walls, and traditional colonial furniture. And whereas in other work environments I have my own music selections piping into my ear, Sugar Brown's proclivities for Americana, Indie Rock, and Folk music played at an appropriate volume so as not to overpower thought and conversation makes it easy to work while appreciating the natural ambience and din of a coffee shop. Recently, I gave the jalapeno and cheese kolache a shot. It was excellent. The bread was a different take compared to the typical donut shop variety - a bit more flaky and dense - almost the consistency of a biscuit, but I rather enjoyed this unique and tasty stance on this most Czech Texan of breakfast foods. read more

I like Sugar Brown's. Their coffee is good, and the atmosphere is comforting. I can say that their Pumpkin Spice Latte is the best I've ever had! However, I had to take away two stars for two reasons. 1) Their prices. My standard size pumpkin spice latte was 5.94 (I got almond milk so that was an extra 50 cents). They load more than half the cup up with ice, so there wasn't much actual drink in there, which made the price sting more. My biggest problem with this place is their service. The person taking our order was so nice and helpful, but my opinion flipped after my sister accidentally spilled her tea. Right after we got our drinks, we accidentally dropped my sister's full cup of tea. The staff completely ignored us! We didn't mind cleaning it up because we dropped it, but the staff acted like we weren't even there. They never said they would help clean it up (even though its their jobs!), or bring out a mop. They didn't even offer us napkins, we had to get up and ask for them. After we asked, they gave us 3 sheets to clean up a whole cup of tea off the floor. So, that obviously wasn't enough, but they kept making us get up and ask them for more. They were no help, and made us feel so uncomfortable!! read more

It had been a while since I was last in Lubbock and got to go to Sugar Brown's coffee. It had always been one of me and my wife's favorite coffee shops to visit while we were in Lubbock. We learned only recently about them not being at their old location on 19th and visited their new location on Indiana. This is how I rated the new location. Coffee/Goodies 4 Ambience 1 Staff 5 Unfortunately we felt that the new location did not live up to what the location on 19th Street was. Everything about that place was special and had a vibe that is day and night compared to its current location. I understand the move was out of their control but I feel they could have captured the vibe of what the 19th sugar browns was was with a different location that was more centralized rather than relocating south like everybody else. In a way I felt saddened about the lost identity. It didn't feel unique to come back to. In any event they are good people and I wish them only the best. read more

I often go to a coffee shop to meet a friend or work on projects with colleagues. So, it's important for me that they have good beverage, lots of outlet, and some baked items in case I run out of energy. My latte came out nicely. The foam was stable and it was not too hot/cold. In terms of its flavor, just above the average. The instant aroma that hits the back of my nose was missing. The ambience is nice (white and bright!) and there were decors which made me think that they were probably some antique items from Lubbock. Other coffee shops that I often visit (Yellow House and Gatsby's) seem to target college students/faculty members mostly but because of it's location, it seems to attract a lot of high school students, too. I was truly happy to see that there was a racial mix. There were people hanging out from diverse ethnicity just hanging out. Also, it looked like there are several outlets in the coffee shop so it is a plus for a nomad worker like me. One suggestion I can make is to ask the customer if they wanted their coffee in a mug or in a paper cup. I personally think that it makes a big difference and I might have enjoyed my latte a lot more, had I received it in a mug. I will give them a try again! read more

I've been here a couple times and the staff is pretty nice. I like the teas there, the sausage kolache is pretty delicious and so are the scones. The location is across from Lubbock high so not bad at all. The parking is very limited so you have to park on the side of the street or in the front if there's space. The inside is a decent size however the places available to plug in your laptop is towards the front unfortunately. The outside has a cute little sign that says made in Lubbock read more

Ordered the mocha latte with coconut milk and sugar Browns latte with coconut milk, pigs in a blanket and muffin. The lattes were some of the best I've had. My go to when I don't know the place is mocha but I tried both and sugar Browns latte was the one I favored. Perfect temperature, perfect flavor, not too much sicky sweetnesss like so many coffee shops do to their flavored lattes(barf Star*****). They used actual cocoa powder and no syrup which I loved. I can see why it's popular with students, free WiFi and there's a large table for group study and a couple of couches in the window area that would also be great for a meeting or study group. I got an iced London fog and a jalapeno kolache which were both were delicious and quickly prepared. The staff was friendly, I had heard that they "had attitudes, were rude" but that's not at all the vibe I got. They were sweet. We opted to sit in the back yard area because the weather was perfect. There's plenty of casual places to chillax back there, shade trees, a fire pit and a bean bag toss game. Great place to hang out, study, meet up or people watch. Sugar Brown's is awesome! As a fellow barista, this was a really great experience. Without a doubt the best specialty coffee in Lubbock. I love seeing shops like this in more rural areas! The baristas were very nice, and our drinks were perfect. We ordered two cortados, a cappuccino, and a London fog. They were all perfectly prepared and presented. My cortado was especially yummy. I wouldn't say that Sugar Brown's is the best coffee shop in Lubbock, but it is for sure in the top 5. Sugar Brown's is just a good coffee shop with an interesting hipster vibe. I am pretty sure that I would have loved going here in college if it were around then. The only bad thing about this place is the parking. There are only a few actual parking spots and the rest is either parking in the street where it says "No parking, bike lane", the small lot at the community center across the street, or a small dirt lot that could almost be considered someone's back yard. read more

Sugar Brown's Coffee is a little gem. I ordered a cappuccino and kolache. The cappuccino was smooth, tasty and and beautiful, obviously made with care. They included a little cookie and soda water. Very nicely done. The kolache had a surprisingly flakey and tasty pastry. The shop itself is very welcoming with a slightly vintage decor, just like I like them. They even had an authentic working turntable. Out back there is a nice little backyard patio with additional seating. Nice shop, I highly recommend. read more

It is close to my work, and the atmosphere there can't be beat. Would recommend to any coffee drinker, and even to those who aren't into coffee.. Sugar brown coffee is a great coffee shop! The roast is perfectly balanced, smooth, and well rounded. I have to admit, I'm a coffee snob. I used to think that coffee had to be dark and stain your teeth to be good. With age, my taste in coffee has matured and I can better appreciate those subtle aromatic and nuanced flavors that give character to a good roast and sugar brown does a great job with this! The roast I had was a Kenyan medium roast. It was probably one of the smoothest coffees I've had in a long time. So much better than Starbucks or Peet's! I had the sausage wrapped goodness. The dough was soft on the inside and crisp on the outside. The jalapeño was enough flavor and heat to let you know it was there without being overpowering. The presentation is what takes this place to the next level. Coffee not as a routine but rather an experience. They bring it out on a beautiful wood board with a cup of sparkling water to cleanse your palette and a shortbread cookie. It was beautiful. All in all probably one of the best coffee shops I've been to in a long! Stop by and give it a try! You'll agree. read more

Like most Lubbock locals, I had an almost religious devotion to the previous Sugar Browns before it closed down several years back. When they announced that they were reopening under new management, I was cautiously hopeful. Now that they've been open a couple of months, they've really hit a stride, and are dutifully (and deliciously) carrying the sacred flame. The first couple of times that I went they were still getting their feet wet, it was a bit disorganized, and the drinks weren't what I wanted them to be. For the past couple of months, though, it's been excellent. Especially their espresso drinks. It's haunted at all hours by the usual suspects, sorority girls hunched in the comfy chairs shopping for boots online to avoid their homework, the ubiquitous bible study groups awkwardly trying to date each other, that guy you always see everywhere, but you can't decide whether you know him or not. During their happy hour (from 2-5pm) most of their espresso drinks are $1, so you really don't have an excuse to not go. read more
