I visited this place for the first time on a random Tuesday morning since I desperately wanted to get my gel manicure removed and get a simple mani/pedi. I came across this place as it was recommended from some people on Reddit. I also noticed that they had great reviews, so choosing this nail salon was a no brainer. I also quickly understood why. I booked my appointment with Nancy as she seemed to be mentioned a ton in other reviews for her great work. She was super sweet and personable. She was pretty quick and efficient as well, but she still took her time to inspect her work and fix any minor issues she saw. The other nail technicians seemed to be really kind as well, and their work seemed amazing from what I could see, so I honestly don't think you could go wrong with any others. However, I honestly couldn't recommend Nancy enough because my mani/pedi looked flawless (I received a ton of compliments!), and there was no damage done to my nails with the gel removal. Moreover, the salon itself is super clean, and they have a great system to keep their tools sanitized. You can really tell that everyone takes pride in their work here. Beware. I have been happily coming here for 2 years, however just recently I had two terrible experiences with gel applications and removal. Application was physically uncomfortable - and I had to lean over to one side sitting with my feet in the water and arm across my chest to get a gel manicure while getting a regular polish pedicure. The manicure ended up a mess with large dents and bumps on several nails. The next visit I received a gel removal and the manicurist left the acetone soaked foil wraps for 30 minutes while she did another manicure. I had to repeatedly ask to have my nails unwrapped and mentioned it felt like it was burning my skin. Finally the manicurist roughly tended to my gel removal but having it left for 3X the normal soak my nails were all broken. read more

Was hoping this place would be a good option for a manicure for natural nails. Nope. I can get a better manicure in any run of the mill strip mall. First she trimmed my nails right down to the skin even though I asked her not to. Then she never smoothed out or filed the tops so my polish chipped in less than 24 hours. A fail. read more

This location - the Virginia Highlands - has become a hit/miss for me. I love Nancy her workmanship is ALWAYS on point and her mannerisms a joy! The place is clean and well stocked! Most of the greeters are great and 1 is okay. That said, there are a few techs I would NEVER go to again and if left with no other option, I'd rather try another business. I come in from out of state. On at least two recent occasions my nails began to fall apart with in hours. With 48 hours they were unbearable to look at and by day 4 I was removing the polish completely and nipping my cuticles. I paid for my husband to get mani/pedi (no polish) and the tech did a terrible job. No massage and no nail buff. But I was charged full price. I'm mad at me for tipping fully during those terrible service visits. read more

I'm a big fan of the Sugarcoat franchise and recently visited this location in the highlands for the first time. The only thing I did not like was having to find parking on the street. There were spots right out front but I forgot to pay and ended up with a $35 ticket (so be sure to pay!). I came in for a polish change and did unicorn chrome with Nancy. She was fantastic! Very knowledgeable about application/technique and worked quickly and efficiently. Would highly recommend. read more

I'm so glad I finally made my way to Sugarcoat. I happened to be in the area, so I made an appointment and was picking a color within minutes. I opted for the essential manicure and can say I will definite become a regular. Mel did a wonderful job and I couldn't be happier with the result. After finding out it was my first time Mel let me know I would receive 10% off off my visit. I also received a punch card that will give me $10 off after my tenth visit. I just moved across town, and I used to be a regular at the Sugarcoat in Vinings. Finding one in Virginia Highlands was a nice surprise. Street parking is pretty easy and non-metered if you don't mind a short walk. The neighborhood is cute and safe. Appointments are easy to make and there's usually great availability. This is the largest sugarcoat I've seen. It is beautifully appointed and styled similarly to the others- very clean and modern. Sugarcoat offers a multitude of services- mani/pedi options including gel and SNS, lash services, and waxing. For mani/pedi, there are hundreds of colors to choose from but they are all very well- organized and the employees are super helpful and friendly. I've started seeing Jennifer for SNS. Fantastic experience! Parking was easy via a parking lot across the street. There's also street parking. I came by for a quick pedicure around lunch time during the weekday and was immediately welcomed upon entry. There was no wait and the staff were all super friendly. This salon is SUPER CUTE. Very tastefully decorated and the best part is there was absolutely NO typical nail salon smells of acetone and nail polish. HUGE plus for me. I really liked the fact that they don't use the pedicure chairs with the jets because it's nearly impossible to clean those thoroughly between customers and it just breeds bacteria over time. The pedicure sinks were cleaned between each customer and my tools were all new and sterilized. Despite not having the typical massage chairs, I was still very comfortable and able to relax after a long week. She did a great job and my toes look perfect! I've gone here a couple of times now - it's convenient but it can be super busy in Saturday's. Overall I've had decent manicures and pedicures. There's a good mani & pedi deal they do so for an express/basic manicure and pedicure it's a great deal. No thrills though (no massage chairs, or drinks offered or anything). I've been going to Sugar Coat for several months now at the recommendation of a close friend. They were one of the nail salons that were taking very serious protective measures against Covid so I felt comfortable getting back into my self-care routine. My experiences have always left me cared for and relaxed. I usually see Chelsea, Ali, or Han for a mani/pedi but I wanted to do SNS for a change. Today was my first time working with Jennifer for a pedicure and SNS mani. She is fantastic!!! So many places do SNS but don't do it right - she does! So I'm off on vacation tomorrow and I made a nail appt to relax and get pampered for my trip. Per usual they called to tell me my go to nail lady had an emergency and if I could reschedule. I swear it happens every time. I said I couldn't since I travel tomorrow and they put me with two other people. The pedicure was fine at best but the manicure was atrocious. This was the most painful and sloppiest manicure I've ever had. I got cuts in three different places. My skin around my fingers looks totally haggard to the point I now have to go and trim the bits of skin coming up around the nail. I also have to go and disinfect my hand as soon as I get home because my nail tech didn't even bother to clean my cuts. She kept filing and spraying nail polish remover all over it despite how bad it stung. I let her know it hurt. I also had to point out to her my skin was literally glued to my nail bc she didn't file it off when she was done. Nail salon offered only 10% discount. I literally paid $148 with tip included to get cuts all over. read more

Michelle does amazing work with lashes. The process was super comfortable and relaxing. She made sure to pay extra attention to detail and give the lashes a very natural finish. The lashes are super lightweight and last a long time. Michelle gives excellent advice on how to properly care for them and answers all your questions. I highly recommend seeing her. Her work is 100x better than using store-bought false lashes. Her nail work is even better! She is thorough and takes care of everything. I felt compelled to bring my experience at this nail salon to a heightened level of attention. As part of our Mother's Day outing, we booked services for seven family members consisting of 3 generations. While our experience was good it paled to meet great due to what could be considered disrespectful or racist. We were in the salon for 2 hours and were not offered any beverage including water. However, as we were departing 3 white people came in for pedicures and were immediately offered wine. As African American professionals the conduct of your employees did not go unnoticed. When this was mentioned to one of the nail techs she replied that due to Covid beverages were not offered. So are beverages not offered to all or just to Black people. This is just one more example of the slight faced by black people. I'm certain that we paid the same prices as the white customers. These continued practices are bad for your business and damages the moral fabric that we are currently trying to restore in this country. So again, while the service was held good, it failed to provide the cultural sensitivity that I am sure that they would expect from others. read more

I like to keep my natural nails so it's important that I go somewhere they are going to take their time and do an excellent job since there is only one real shot. This is my second time here and each time they did not disappoint. Everyone here is super nice and helpful and knows exactly what they are doing. The atmosphere is also very nice and they have a rewards program! The prices are about average for nail salons in general. I paid a total of $60 for gel removal, SNS mani, and tip. Came here after a slew of disappointing, rapid fire-be as fast as they can-get you in and out-mani pedi spots in the city. Made reservations online but when I walked in, that didn't even matter. I sat and waited and no one knew that I had a reservation or what I had reserved. Got seated, then got a mani pedi. Was told I was being charged extra for callous removal (isn't that part of the pedicure package I chose?!). The total came out to way more than what I had initially picked in terms of the packages I had reserved with random 'additional charges.' The most annoying part is that nothing was transparent, there was nothing written on the receipt, and the lady just used her hand held calculator to give me the total. The mani pedi? It was fine. Nothing spectacular. It smells strongly of nail polish remover in here. I won't be back. read more

I come to sugarcoat every few weeks and always leave very satisfied. Unfortunately today that was not the case. I got a gel pedicure that by no means could count as a pedicure. My feet were not even covered by the water. She let my feet soak for all of 60 seconds before taking them out. She scrubbed the bottom of my feet and that was about it. No massage of any kind or lotion on my legs. Next time I want a pedicure I will be sure to go elsewhere. read more

Walk in and it looks like it's going to be a super expensive place because it has this boutique feel, but prices are so reasonable! I got the middle option for Mani/Pedi combo (Essential) and it was $45 for normal polish. You still get the massage and lotions with this option and the women who work there are so efficient. They offered us wine and water with no extra cost. If you want to treat yoself or show friends/family a good time, take them here! When I was living in midtown, Virginia Highlands was my location (but in last 2years because of our move to Symrna I have also used the Vinings location). Clean, friendly and accommodating. I recommend making an appointment if you are getting wax services. Also parking is limited. There are meters out front, they take credit card. Ali is great! Working with the hard wax for the first time she made an uncomfortable situation comfortable. I recommend Ali if it's your first wax. Just awful! Completely unprofessional. I agree with the reviewer below. My manicurist also has purple hair tips so I'm guessing it was the same woman. I asked for a simple polish change and she seemed annoyed. Took my previous polish off that was red and went on to polish the new color (champagne) and you could see the red rings around my nails. I asked politely if she could take if off and use more remover and she said it was my "cuticle" holding onto the polish. Which it of course was not, as she went on to use a second round of polish remover and it was just fine (removed all the previous red polish). She finished without even applying a clear top coat. I went home and applied my own. Do yourself a favor and a visit Susie Qs, a brand new nail salon in Virginia Highlands across from Murphys (on highland and Virginia ave).
