I am very cautious about raw fish, but here it is always fresh and very tasty. I recommend this to anyone who loves sushi and hand rolls.

Beautiful establishment within the hustle and bustle of DTLA. This is a smaller place and is rather quaint. Their menu isn't expansive and we ordered the price fixed menu that was $40. So once i started it went from okay good to who wants the rest of them, seriously when I picked up the sushi the rice would break up I've never seen that, second i was in the middle of eating my edamame i still had two left on plate and the waiter got my plate mid flight he sees my face reads my uncomfortableness and says do you still wanted, i was so shy that i was no im okay, but next time please ask before you lift and almost take it away. I came on a Sunday night around 7PM and there were quite a few tables. The sushi was okay but I felt like it's much more tailored for the ambiance rather than the food. I didn't like that several of the sushi were very salty and had too much rice relative to the fish. Each sushi was sent out 1-2 at a time which is different from what I'm used to with sushi usually served together at once. Also didn't like how a couple dishes I asked for were out but still listed on the menu. Really cannot recommend this place. Dishes I tried: - Sweet shrimp ($8.50) : had a piece of small shell to spit out which wasn't fun. Lemon Yuzu was a bit light - Salmon nigiri ($6.25) : tasted okay but it was the thinnest piece of salmon I have seen in nigiri! See my photo. Usually I expect thick slice of fish. - Ikura ($8) : Extremely salty. It was drenched in some soy type sauce which I was surprised since the ikura itself is already cured and salty but they added more to it - Anagi ($8) : this was a special I ordered since they were out of Unagi. - got the don't trust me menu that came with 6 orders of nigiri (2 pieces each), 2 specialty hand rolls, and eel nigiri at the end - the starter sashimi was yum i wish the sauce was a bit more acidic - everything tuna was solid i love the bluefin which is a tad more lean but the chutoro was soooo melt in the mouth. the ootoro was pretty good but i wish it wasn't drenched in sauce bc it was fairly strong - the hand rolls were - I LOVE STRONG VINEGAR SUSHI RICE so this place hit that well - i'm not sure if the $60 is worth it? the lobster choices i assume made it more expensive otherwise the rest of the menu included parts from the $40 tasting menu...might just stick with that next time since it has yellowtail - the service was so amazing!! thought you could tell they eye hawk you down to figure out the pace of bringing the food out. they try to space out bringing the sushi but i felt a bit rushed as a slow eater read more

I've been to Sugarfish many times, but this was my first time at this location. As usual, the fish was incredibly fresh and high quality. I love their omakase style menus, you really can't go wrong with any of them. My office loves Sugarfish, so we decided to do a takeout lunch from here. Most of them ordered one of the preset lunch boxes, but I did a variety of items, including the cucumber, toro, yellowfin, and unagi rolls with a side of edamame and tuna sashimi. I thought everything was pretty good, but I think I've had better fish elsewhere. Some of the cuts of fish left a really fishy taste in my mouth, and I had to cleanse my palette with the cucumber and edamame. I do appreciate that everything here is very thought out, especially with all of the sauces that should be used for each type of sushi. One thing to note is that if you don't order one of the preset boxes, they combine all the rolls in another box, which was a little inconvenient for a group order. But, they were willing to give extra boxes for us to split it up on our own. We placed our order online and it was ready for pick up at the designated time. read more

Also, A BIG PLUS, THIS PLACE IS A NO TIP ESTABLISHMENT. Meaning, they probably pay they're employees a living wage. Kudos to Sugarfish for this. Only downside for me was the lighting ( intimate and dimly lit) which made it challenging to see the menu. Also, parking is challenging too. I highly recommend coming her if you're in the area. My first time here was a quick date in celebration of the first day of a new job and it was a very appreciated experience. The ambience is romantic and welcoming. We were served with amazing service throughout our entire meal. We both had the "trust me" set which is priced very fairly for the quality and courses served. The albacore is among one of the best quality ones I've had, and the yuzu paired with the tuna sashimi was just perfect. All the pieces were incredibly buttery and so fresh. Only the salmon really fell a little short of flavor when compared to other spots I've had, but overall everything left me wanting to come back. Of course, being downtown and considering the parking situation, I would choose a different location for my next visit, but I have no complaints otherwise. read more

Wow. Everything was wow. Fixed price menu. We had 3 x the medium price. Added in on our favorites at the end. Nice selection of sakis. Beer selections limited. Excellent service. Servers have a nice explanation of each course. We were lucky and were seated without much wait. There is often a line outside. Very small seating area, and they sort of don't encourage sitting around once you finish eating. Best sushi I have had in the US. I like to come early as the wait times can get pretty long due to it being a small intimate space. After 6:30pm a line typically will start to form. The trust me set is my go to :) the sushi is always quality & very consistent. Sugarfish can be controversial because some people love it, some people hate but I rate it and have always had a great experience at this location. We got to the place at dinner time. We were told that it would be a 30 min wait. Since Sugarfish is located in a place, there were other stores to check out to pass time. After being seated, the servers immediately handed us water and sauces. The place was neat and tidy but a bit small. I chose to do the NOZAWA TRUST ME which includes around seven rounds of sushi or hand rolls. Immediately after the first round of sashimi, I could taste the freshness and the ponzu that they added. The fish did not taste fishy at all. At the end, I left fulling pretty full and satisfied. As for parking, there is a paid parking garage behind Sugarfish. Very nice service in a very uncrowded spot on a Friday evening. Overall, the dishes were a bit a hit and miss. I ordered one of the 'trust me' menus . I think it was a great price for the amount of food that I got.. we split an edamame order. It was cold, which is definitely a choice. Just kind of boring. It was edamame and salt. What can you say about that ? Tuna and Chutoro Sashimi - ponzu and chives- honestly this tuna was not fresh and was clearly a dish brought right from the walk-in. It was swimming in Ponzu . But that did not cover up the fact that it was definitely at least a few days old. Presentation was also just a bit ugly.. Albacore Sushi - ponzu and chives, 2-pc Salmon Sushi - toasted sesame, 2-pc . Good salmon Toro Hand Roll- not my favorite at all the tuna here also didn't seem as fresh as it could've been. Japanese Yellowtail* Sushi - lemon, 1-pc great New Zealand Sea Bream - yuzu ponzu, 1-pc great Blue & Dungeness Crab Hand Roll - didn't like The sushi rice seemed fresh however it was not sticky and fell apart when you picked up the roll. Overall, there's just too heavy an emphasis on lemon and Ponzu. The service was great and the pacing of bringing out the dishes was really good I thought. I don't believe that I would order this particular "Trust me" again or any trust me. The sashimi and nagiri seemed to be the way to go. They don't take Apple Pay, which is a bit quirky and something. I obviously forgot about Sugarfish.. I guess the tip is built in? There was a service charge, but I don't think it was high enough so I left the cash that I had which wasn't much. It was my wife's birthday and here meal of choice was sushi (which it usually is and I'm happy about that). We headed over to Sugarfish around 6:00PM and were able to get a table right away. The staff here were super friendly and helpful during our visit and were great with taking our order and refilling the waters. The menu here has so many good sushi, appetizer, and drink choices it can be a struggle to make a decision, luckily, they can make it for you! One of the options on the menu was the "The Nozawa Trust Me" which is basically where you pick that and then the restaurant just brings you a bunch of food for you to eat. Now, I have literally no idea what I actually ate because I have the memory of a paper towel, but what I do know is that the Sashimi, Sushi Rolls, Hand Rolls, and wrap things I was brought were absolutely incredible and melted in my mouth with each bite, not to mention the insanely good flavour of pretty much every single thing I ate. Overall, Sugarfish is a different kind of sushi experience and one I'll be coming back for again and again in the future. I loved not knowing what was going to be put in front of me, while at the same time I loved every single thing I was given, so if you want some fun and good food, Sugarfish is just the place for you! read more

Usually get the set menu but wanted to get just all of my favorites this time. Salmon is always my #1. Chuutoro I like better than Ootoro since it's less fatty but still so buttery. Hokkaido sea scallops are such a beautiful tender bite with the pre-brushed sauce. Usually I get sweet shrimp (plus I love the yuzu kosho it comes with) but sometimes the pink lobster is sweeter. I don't usually get the salmon eggs but very refreshing and briny. Uni is so sweet and creamy here. Finishing with the toasty unagi with its savory-sweet sauce is also such a delight. I always tell people Sugarfish is the best quality at the price point- even ordering a la carte is more worth it here than some other places. The set menus are also always a good time. Personally I don't much like albacore, other white fish, or hand rolls as much as other nigiri. But the consistency of quality and flavor still make every bite worth it. read more

While I was at the front desk speaking with the staff to be seated, an Asian woman (roughly in her 30s-40s) who was there for a delivery pickup kept rudely interrupting our conversation. What made it worse was that several other delivery drivers were waiting patiently and quietly on the side, yet she was allowed to disrupt the service flow without being corrected by the staff. Later, while I was eating, I saw the same individual push to the front of the line again. It is incredibly disrespectful to the dining guests and the other professional drivers. I try to go to sugarfish every time I'm in LA. It's always a classic for me. I usually get the Trust Me Deluxe and add a few extra hand rolls at the end if i'm still hungry. We came in on a Saturday afternoon. I believe there was one patron and when we left maybe 4 other tables were there. Service was slow. Food was mediocre. You might as well find an AYCE sushi spot for the quality and cost. This is a sushi place for an American palate extremely salty. It does not have the finesse that typical Japanese sushi has. We ordered the Don't think, Just Eat and The Nozawa Trust Me. Rice had too much vinegar in it. I asked to not sauce my remaining fish and I ate the rest of my meal without the rice. I brought both the saltiness and the rice to my servers attention. I do not recommend. I should stick to my go to. Sushi Gen. the service, the food, all perfection. That is the move. Used to be one of my go-to sushi spots whenever I visited LA, and I still think the fish is fresh and high quality. That said, I'm lowering my review to 4 stars because of their 16% mandatory service charge, even on takeout orders. I understand if this was for dine-in service, but adding that fee for takeout doesn't make sense to me. I asked the cashier why there's a service charge on to-go, and he said it "goes back into the business." But... isn't that what we're already doing when we pay for the food? That explanation felt off and honestly left a bad taste in my mouth. To top it off, he mentioned that the 16% isn't even considered gratuity if you're dining in, which is even more confusing. I don't know if I feel good about continuing to support a place that adds this fee without a clear reason--especially when it's not optional. read more
