We had a serious problem: we live in the North Metro and we love sushi, and those two things did not seem to mesh. We had tried various other options near our home that were so-so but ultimately left us thinking that we would just need to drive to Minneapolis when we wanted to get decent sushi. And then one miraculous day we found Suishin. We've always had great customer service and the staff is wonderful. The quality of the food is very good and consistent. We've been here for dates and we've also ventured to bring our young children in - both experiences were successful. We do tend to just get an order to go if our kids are involved, just because it's easier :) But even our kids have started to love sushi! read more

I had the bento box and the salad was crappy iceberg lettuce along with smaller portions which did not seem fresh. The rolls were so-so. Service is understaffed. We are new to the area (from Houston) and have been trying to find a decent sushi place near to home. While the sushi was decent, it wasn't an extremely memorable experience. The menu is pretty limited, and does not include a children's menu. My menu was falling apart, and the pages stuck together. The sushi menu was a sheet of paper (similar to a dim sum menu), with limited descriptions, and I didn't know if I was supposed to mark it myself or order it with the waitress. They did split a full salmon teriyaki plate for my kids, without issue, which I did appreciate. My kids loved it and finished the entire order. We had the seaweed salad and tempura appetizer. Both were good, and the tempura was not greasy at all. It came out hot from the fryer. We had the Philadelphia, Rainbow, and Volcano rolls. The Philadelphia had scallions, which I've never seen before. The Volcano was my favorite. It's a little on the spicy side. Service was decent. She was very nice, but did not check on us or offer refills for drinks. Sushi was slow, but the restaurant was only maybe, half full. It seemed like waiting time was long for all. Overall, portion sizes were decent, but nothing else was extremely memorable. With slow/very little service, I'm not sure if this would be a "go to" place for us close to home. read more

We were there for New Year's eve dinner. The Waiter was very busy and the owner was not very helpful. We waited for appetizer which was late and was Luke warm. We were practically ignored the whole time we were there. We did not enjoy the meals or the service. They really don't care about their regular customers. Went with a group of friends, Suishi was priced fairly for sushi and the food was excellent. Also service was quick. The place is decorated in a very modern look. Even the bathrooms with the leaf sink looks fabulous. I would recommend trying this restaurant. They also had two big, wide screen TV's over the bar. read more

I really wanted to love this place but I just couldn't. My mom and I went here with a groupon since I had wanted to try it and we had three different rolls. Lobster, Aspen, and something else along with the kani salad. The rolls had amazing flavor and were quite large. But they were so large you couldn't eat them in one bite to get all the flavor and they kept falling apart. All of the rice was sticking to the plate so the rolls were just falling apart before we could even eat them. And being that there are no forks, we just used our hands. The kani salad was also decent but the crab had a weird texture. Flavor was good, but meat was weird. And the Crunchy on top had gotten all soggy and gross. The other reason it kind of sucked was that our waitress only checked on us once. While my mom and I were desperately trying to get the two last pieces of fallen apart lobster roll in our mouth. And then took quite a while to bring us the check. Also, if you're not expecting it, the booths aren't nailed to the ground. We were at the far end of one and sat down and both of our booth seats moved. Not a bad idea to be able to rearrange the restaurant but just took us by surprise. Ps their water sucks. Well, I ended up coming back a lot later than I originally thought I would, but I was a lot happier with my meal this time around. For one thing, they got rid of that awful soundtrack they had before--phew! It also seemed like the food quality was upped a bit. I didn't get the exact same thing I had before, but I did get the North Oaks Roll, which my dining partner had before. I came here for the first time for my birthday dinner. The reviews on here looked good and I wanted to try shabu shabu. I've been craving it since I left Houston. This place had polite, helpful service even on a surprisingly busy Monday night. It was worth the wait because the sushi was fresh, the sushi rice was prepared correctly and they used real crab in the rainbow roll. Thank you!!! I've had so much imitation seafood lately. I miss fish roe but all places have gone away from it...probably to keep costs down? Anyway, the hot pot, although can't be cooked at the table was good. I would've liked it to be hotter in temperature but I'm used to it boiling at the table. There was a good portion of beef and vegetables. One pot for two people was plenty. So I am a NYC transplant - and one thing that has been killing me is the rather poor quality of the sushi I've had in the Sin Twitties. Since you can get high quality fish for lunch in almost any Manhattan neighborhood w/o having to try - this has made me very sad. I had a pretty darn good meal at Suishin yesterday. PROS: The cuts of fish were at LEAST 3-4x as thick as anything ive had locally in the last year They have Toro. It was the correct consistency. The sashimi was thick enough for me to bite into - not these paper thin slices that seem to be so popular here. The spicy tuna was made correctly: no tobiko mixed, chunks of tuna rather than smashed tuna. Not overdosed with spicy mayo. Best spicy tuna handroll ive in the past year. The service was excellent. Everything was high quality and lovely. CONS: if you are into all you can eat (which I am not) this isnt for you. the sashimi - while of the correct thickness, was still smaller per piece than I am really accustom to. Be prepared to spend a little for the quality. Dont come here looking for something cheap. That said - they do have combo meals that are priced 18-25 dollars that seem like a good deal. I didnt try one of these and ordered a la carte so I dont know if they treat these differently in terms of quality and cut of fish. Note: i did not try any of the kitchen items - i was here for the fish. I will go back at some point and try the gyoza and the fried items. These are easier to get right though... read more

I absolutely love sushi, and I'm from Shoreview.. So obviously I was extremely excited they were opening a Japanese restaurant in North Oaks. However, all of our rolls tasted like laundry detergent. The fish was so far from fresh I'm curious how they have been open for longer than 6 months. The gyoza had a unpleasant after taste that tasted like raw fish. I politely called to notify the manager that perhaps the salmon (which was in most of our rolls) might not be fresh, and proceeded to get yelled at by the extremely rude manager that said "what do you want ME to do about it? I know our food is fresh" - instead of knowing what to do, as a manager. Needless to say I will not be returning here. Worst over-priced sushi/service I've ever experienced. read more

The first thing I noticed was that the women's bathroom has signage proudly advertising the presence of a diaper changing table. Isn't that nice? It's a good thing that I'm not a man, because they don't get a changing table. Lucky me. The sushi was delicious. It was fresh and of good quality. We ordered a platter of a variety of tempura items. It was AWFUL. It had zero flavor. Some of the pieces were cold. It desperately needed salt or some kind of sauce. A spicy mayo? Something. No amount of soy was helping. We had to remind the server to bring us things that he had forgotten. Several. Times. We finally gave up on one of the items. Then we had to ask him to remove them from our tab, because he didnt forget to charge us. Oy. We'll go back to New Fresh Wok in Falcon Heights, our usual place. That place is awesome. read more

We had lunch today at Suishin Japanese Restaurant. I had the Rainbow roll, which has crab, cucumber, and avocado inside and 5 different fish varieties on the outside. It was absolutely marvelous, the sushi rice prepared to perfection and the fish very fresh and tender. The presentation was beautiful and the service was great, as well. I have been to many good Japanese restaurants in the 'Cities, but Suishin may be my favorite one. Great ambience, good service and delicious, well prepared food. We decided to try Suishan, because we saw a Living Social deal, and to celebrate our Anniversary. We love Japanese food, and have been to many places all over the US and Canada. We walked in and the atmosphere was very nice, but no one was there at the front to greet us and seat us, so we sat ourselves. The waitress Kelly was very nice, and helpful. My wife ordered some tea to start and really enjoyed it. So things were starting out well. We ordered the following entrees, the Ika Age ( calamari) , we were disappointed because it was more like ika katsu, than ika age, very thick breading. The beef taki lacked flavor and was sliced thick. The Age Dashi Tofu was just average. The Dragon roll was just ok, and finally the Volcano roll had way to much crunchy stuff surrounding the roll. Suishin was definately not worth the long drive. We will not be back. read more

I'm a hardcore sushi addict, and work near Suishin. There are no good sushi restaurants in the area. Until now! I have been multiple times for lunch now, and always been very satisfied with the sushi. To be clear, I haven't ordered any non-sushi items from the menu, all I can say is that the friends I've been with have enjoyed them. (One friend noted that the tempura left something to be desired.) The rolls I've had are all delicious, but its the nigiri that I'm always most excited about. Some of the largest portions of fish I've encountered in the Twin Cities area. They also have a nice variety of fish to choose from. The service has always been good, and they've always accomodated my desire to modify their combo's and such (with a small upcharge). I'm thrilled to have a good sushi option in this area, and hope they make it! read more

I went with my husband and son on a Saturday night. We arrived early to beat the dinner rush, so it was no surprise that we were seated right away. It has been my experience that sushi, like risotto, is either very good or very bad. There is rarely an in-between. However, in the case of Suishin, the sushi was excellent!!! We ordered four different rolls and the mango ice cream for dessert. Everything tasted fantastic. And very reasonably priced, to boot! The atmosphere was comfortable and kid-friendly. (Although I'd recommend only bringing well-behaved children over the age of five). The only reason I'm not giving Suishin 5 stars is because we felt our server was not the friendliest. She was attentive, but didn't go out of her way to smile or make recommendations. That being said, I truly hope Suishin thrives, so we can keep coming back! Not your typical sushi bar. It's hidden in strip mall but once you walk in, the atmosphere reflects a small yet classy place. With a nice bar area, my wife and I enjoyed a few drinks and dug into a nice selection of sushi. I liked everything especially the Sashimi but wasnt a huge fan of the eel (personl preference). I found the restaurant on Orgadeal and asked for a first time visit discount. If you are in the mood for sushi, close to home, its a nice place to go but other than that, I give it an 7 out of 10. read more

I enjoy suishin!! very very much! Sushi is always great and fresh, looks yum, tastes extremely yum. And the service is quick and satisfying. It has the look of Ten Forward from TNG. The sushi is good and the price$ are less then most sushi/japenese restaurants. I have been there many times and most of the food on the menu is good to very good. I really like the Sake Flight/Sampler at $10 is a real deal. And they offer Groupons and coupons often as well. They now have a couple good beers on draft as well. There are four choices of seating: bar, booth, table, and sushi bar. Very disappointed! ordered take out sushi rolls, simply tuna and salmon. Got just 6 pieces 3 each of tuna and salmon. It looked like it was just tossed in the container, didn't look appetizing at all! Took a bite and was very disappointed. Also had the miso soup which was tasteless, they didn't even topped the soup off with green onions. Come on now for the price I paid you would have thought that they would at least present the order so it would at least look good!
