The broth had good flavor, quite rich as it should be. The pork belly was tender. Soft boiled egg half had a nice hint of soy sauce and is warm (hate it when ramen joints throw a cold egg in ramen). The noodles were real ramen noodles, but slightly overcooked, so it was a tad too soft. Overall, it's a competitive ramen bowl taste wise. At $13, not too shabby. I've been going to the restaurant for a couple years without a problem. They've changed to an "All You Can Eat" menu, and you can't order a regular meal anymore. It's a poor idea for people who aren't complete gluttons. There was no sashimi on the menu anymore, but I insisted and they made the Deluxe Sashimi that they had been making for years. My partner ordered wayyy too much food - three rolls that they brought in one of those "boat" things. Oddly, they do not show the change to "All You Can Eat" on their website, and if you order to-go, apparently you can still order from the original menu. There was food left, and then we got the shock of the night. Because of the "All You Can Eat" menu, if you want to take away anything they charge you more! In this case $1/piece for about 9 pieces of Maki! Needless to say they got no gratuity. This is a very poor idea in a neighborhood with so many retired people and children. read more

This was my second time going here. First time was to celebrate my friend's birthday. Three of us ordered a bunch of food. Like literally! We pretty much ordered 2 appetizers, 2 kitchen appetizers, and 4 specialty rolls. Let me just tell you everything was SUPERB! The waitress was kind to put the cake that I brought in their fridge. She even light the candle! It's like a 5 stars restaurant except for one thing and I'll explain it in the end. Second time was today. And I came here to have a lunch date with my husband. We ordered grill squid appetizer, sashimi lunch and 2 rolls (sakura maki and lobster maki). Everything was perfect. Taste and service were on point. Now here comes the part why I took one star from this place. Both times I was here, there were so many flies (fruit flies/small annoying flies). A couple flies ended up in our food. I really wanted to give this place 4 stars but I feel like it just missed the mark. The meal started off really well with the dragon roll (however for some reason they didn't put the cream cheese in there that was supposed to be in there) the roll was very very good, but would have been better with the cream cheese . The smoked salmon sushi/nigiri was also good, so fresh and pretty large pieces. The other two rolls were slightly disappointing- the volcano was missing spice- feel like it needed a kick. And hedgehog was interesting. It had jalapeño but I felt like they were kind of low in flavor so you couldn't feel the spice and it was overall lacking in flavor. The calamari on top was a bit chewy. I come from Michigan to eat here. I always get a ginger salad which is fireeeeeee. It's tiny but the ginger sauce makes it so worth it. I usually get spider roll extra ell sauce and they never miss. They hit it right on the spot everytime I've came here. Crab ragoons. 3-$5 is a little expensive for only 3 that aren't filled a lot but still good. Today I tried the spicy crab sushi and it's hot but I'm white and can't handle spice but it's still a great choice. My boyfriend goes for spicy tuna sushi or tuna tar tar and he loves it. Sumi Sushi should be called Sue Me sushi. This was a terrible experience all around. Very unfortunate considering it's so close to home. The all you can eat really destroys the kitchen and service. We ordered 3 rolls and an appetizer to split. We waited for over 40 minutes to get the rolls and the appetizer never came. The food itself was ok nothing spectacular, good value if you're doing all you can eat. Then, when we went to close out they charged us for two all you can eat meals when we specifically ordered off of the regular menu. There was one person working the entire restaurant floor. TLDR: Food was ok, staff and kitchen very disorganized. We had a reservation for 7pm. Got there and got sat immediately. There was a couple and a party of 6 that were already there and waiting for their food. We got our food and nearly finished our meal before either of them got their food. There was a table next to us the looked like someone had just left. The dishes were still on the table and it was uncleaned. It remained uncleaned for nearly an hour. The wait staff consisted of one woman, busting her ass, and a man and teen who did very little. Behind the kitchen looked like 2 sushi chefs. I couldnt tell if there was anyone else in the back. The man was in charge of deliveries. While not deliverying, did almost nothing. A couple came in the be seated and he turned them away even though there were empty tables! There were 2 clean tables and that dirty table next to us. I was shocked considering thats turning away good money. Something about being too busy with to go orders, but that didnt make sense and I would think a restaurant would want as many customers to come in as they can get. Also he walked past the dirty table several times and did not clean it even though he definitely had the time to. The teen was in charge of getting to-go orders together but at a snail pace. He seemed like he did not want to be there. As people would come in he'd ask them what they were there for in a very quiet almost inaudible voice. As we were walking out a family of 3 came in the be seated and the husband had a hard time hearing the teen and had to say sorry he couldnt understand him. The teen was about to turn them away when the waitress intervened and sat them down. Lastly was the waitress. She was busting her ass. We felt bad for her considering how much she was doing and how little the other two were doing. She was waiting tables, answering calls, and helping get to-go orders together, and when she had time, cleaning tables. Much of her job couldve been absorbed by the other two. Especially cleaning the table next to us. She was friendly, but overextending herself, when she really didnt need to be. The food was alright. Decently priced, but very average quality. TL:DR - the epitome of casual no frills sushi spot but that has unbeatable lunch and weekday specials. I will say that the 5* rating is based a lot upon the value you can get eating here. Being new to Chicago, I now regularly expect to spend about $50 per meal for my wife and I. But here for lunch, we got really full for less than $30. There lunch special includes miso soup and two rolls (from a limited list) for $12. Hard to beat $6 a roll. We got a spicy tuna and a yellowtail jalapeño. We also added the honey roll for $15. Then beyond that, we got 20% off anything from the sushi bar. I'm assuming this extra discount is because we came in mid afternoon on a weekday. Food wise, it's pretty standard stuff. The honey roll was the best. But everything tasted unspectacularly fine, which is what you should expect from a casual sushi spot in the middle of the us. Outside the food, the venue is fairly standard and clean, service was a Little too "chill"/unprofessional for me, but ultimately the guy was nice and didn't screw up our order, so what else can you ask for? Ultimately it's not a spot I'd rush to take my out of town friends to, but wouldn't hesitate to stop by again for a sushi fix. read more

They give you the glasses and open the bottle. Their makis are what I go for, hands down. They have created things I haven't seen o. Other menus, and any staples too. Done very very well. Tresa loves their sashimi. All excellent quality and cut thicker than other places. Personally not a fan of the thicker cut but she loves it. Makis we like? Moving to the South Loop after living in the LP/Lakeview area for the last eight years, I'm in search for my new regular sushi spot. I noticed this new spot opening up basically across the street from my building so I decided to give a try one Sunday afternoon for lunch. The interior is bright and clean, and the restaurant was pretty empty so we were greeted and seated quickly. They have a lunch special which was very reasonable! Any 2 rolls for 12 bucks or 3 for 18, both came with the option of either miso soup or house salad. We did the 3 roll special and ordered the spicy tuna, yellowtail jalapeno, and spider roll. We also got the edamame as an app. Sumi did not disappoint! The sushi was fresh and there was the right proportion between rice and fish. Spicy tuna is my go-to for a classic roll, and Sumi's was on par with many others I've tried. The salad was a bit underwhelming (probably will get the miso soup instead next time), due to it being watery and only a mixture of lettuce and dressing. I had mixed feelings when Kome, a Japanese restaurant in the same spot before Sumi, closed its door. The foods at Kome was good and went down to be bad. However, their ramen was always good. Fast forward, Sumi has opened and I had to try their ramen. Because for sushi, there are many restaurants in Sloop but for ramen, it's a different story. It's still in a soft opening period so didn't have a high hope. But.. please. Here are a few red flags. 1. Temperature of the soup. It was lukewarm. I am not saying it should be boiling hot but it seemed they put all pre-made and cold ingredients( or they rinsed the noodle in cold water?)into the soup. That kills the joy of having ramen in half. 2. This was actually bigger issue. The noodle. I have no idea what kind of noodle they use but was not typical ramen noodle(aka Chinese egg noodle). It was almost like different kind of Chinese noodle. Soft. Slippery. Lack of texture. Strike two. 3. The server. She was ok. Not nice but not inattentive either. But you guys are in soft opening. It's the perfect time to ask customers what they think so can improve. Every small things matter including how to return the bill onto the table, definitely not like tossing the bill without making any eye contact. The only reason I am giving two stars not one is because I got 30% discount for a soft opening. And it is only about the ramen I had. (Other dishes could be awesome) I really really hope this restaurant does well in this so called doomed location in Sloop. But... I do have a bad feeling. Please prove me wrong. Update. The owner has contacted me and "kindly" educated me Ramen is Chinese. Yes. I am well aware of that ramen is using Chinese egg noodle, which Sumi doesn't. Food was unexpectedly good for a soft opening but definitely a few growing problems. Had a 30% discount going on. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars, but for the price point it was a deal for dinner. Definitely get the seared scallops. Comes with some noodle that when you twirl and eat together, just a great compliment to the scallop. The udon was good. Had to add some salt and definitely seemed sparse on the seafood. We had ordered the seaweed, was delicious. Some growing pains. I ordered the green tea. The cup was so hot, I couldn't even hold it. The food was delicious! My family is from the east coast so we have high sushi standards, and this place met them. $30 all you can eat is a fantastic price. We went here for my birthday and it was great because the all you can eat includes appetizers, special rolls, and dessert. The server brought us mochi without asking, which was really nice. It's definitely a more lowkey sushi restaurant, which is nice if you don't want to go a super fancy place but you also want good quality sushi.
