After watching some great food shows on Netflix, I wanted so much to try quality ramen. Must say that Sumi did not disappoint. Our waiter was very helpful and answered many questions. I had Tonkotsu (pork bone broth) with shrimp. This was to an extent a rookie mistake. I should have taken the waiters advice and gotten the pork belly. 20$ for a sushi roll....... I've never..... but I will again! It was fresh. Not too much not too little. Amount of rice was spot on. The mango tasted amazing. I will be back. During the pandemic, I'm surprised they stay afloat but I can see why they do. Best sushi I've had in years. Restaurant was clean but a little cluttered towards the kitchen but couldn't tell what exactly it was. I would only suggest to not have an actual lobster in the roll. My take out hibachi was tolerable on an extremely hot Wednesday evening. I regret not dining here when they were having their grand opening promotion but I was more than satisfied with my meal which was just under $20. Surprisingly it came with most of the accoutrements that hibachi meals have sans the noodles. I can't attest to all of the items as I didn't touch my salad nor the miso soup but then again I rarely touch these items at any restaurant. Although the shrimp were served tail on they were good enough & actually had some flavor to them. I can't complain about the rice nor vegetables either. It's not the best hibachi but you can honestly do a whole lot worse especially in the illustrious south loop neighborhood. Lastly I'll mention two things the were weird about the place. On one of the televisions they were showing RoadHouse & while I'm a fan of action films I would've felt a certain way had my toddler been in my company watching Patrick Swayze doing roundhouse kicks. To echo other reviewers: room temp broth (the worst when you're expecting a nice steaming bowl of soup!), not enough flavor/richness, over cooked noodles, and very oily. The pork belly itself was actually very good tho. The sushi was tasty. Pleasant presentation but small portions for the price. Also ordered a veg tempura appetizer which was great. Hot, crispy, and lightly battered as it should be. Overall I'm on the fence about this place. If anything, go for the sushi. read more

Sumi is a dangerous place for me. The hibachi dinner is excellent. It comes with fried rice which is always flavorful, and very good miso soup. The only miss for me would be the side salad which is always abnormally wet. It is a few blocks from my house and I have become a regular patron in just a few months. The staff is always polite and friendly and I can always get a table when I do decide to dine in. I would highly recommend checking them out. read more

The maki rolls are generously portioned, with plenty of filling and not just massive amounts of rice. The ramen is a popular choice-- every time I visit, I see lots of people ordering it, but honestly, I don't love it: I find the noodles to be overcooked and the broth too salty. Stop by during lunch to take advantage of the lunch specials. My go-to is two maki rolls for $12. Food was below average, sushi was not fresh, ramen was too salty, and the service was terrible, I made a pick-up order at 11:15, but when I got there, the restaurant was closed (they should be open at 11:00), and I had to wait 40 mins to pick up my food. The service is very weird. The lady "in charge" seems to be the issue. She is not nice and makes you feel like you did something wrong. We have ordered our food which was AYCES and the food came in prompt. After that she had no business with us. the only service we had was water refills. When finally we got her attention she came and asked if we need anything else. It was obvious she was not expecting us to order anything else and gave the unpleasant feeling of being there. I asked for another salad and was told they are out of it. I ordered something else instead and was told it will take a long time. Great idea of soft opening discount 30% dine in and carry out! We are glad to have a new place next door now- good variety of sushi, hibachi, and ramen! So far we tried the sushi and I give it a 4/5 stars because the prices are pretty high and we still prefer our usual sushi place. Prices don't seem to match the quality of the sushi. I went in for lunch today and ordered the spicy scallops roll and the snow crab roll. My favorite was the snow crab roll. It was equally sweet and savory. I will definitely order it again!!!! Hands down the best sushi in the South Loop. 5 star rating is for the quality and extensive options of sushi. Indoor dining service can be hit or miss on staff friendliness/attentiveness but the sushi is the star of the whole experience anyway. I'm mostly giving this 3 star because the sushi was mediocre, but I did absolutely LOVE their version of a kani salad!! It's an item that's in most sushi menus, but everyone does it a little different! This was was crunchy, sweet, savory, spicy, just perfection! I can't wait to have it again! Unfortunately, I wasn't as impressed with the sushi rolls or the tempura. I will definitely be back to try more, since I tried rolls that are more outside my comfort zone, so it could just be that I didn't like it because I'm picky and not because it was actually bad. However, the tempura was actually bad. It was too greasy and some pieces still had raw better on the inside - gross!! Even though I'm only giving 3 stars, I highly recommend trying it for their kani salad (which was 5 stars!!). I'll definitely go back for this dish and to try others, so I expect I'll have an updated review. UPDATE 8/16/19: I got take out and ordered fresh rolls and the sushi was great!! Much better than my first time! I think I just orders stuff I wouldn't really like anywhere. I had the Philadelphia roll and the spicy tuna and they were both excellent. The fish was fresh. When I first started coming here the sushi was fantastic. I'm now wondering if it is under different ownership. The fish tastes old and well, overly fishy. Not a fan. I hadn't been for a few months because I got hibachi and it was so bad I threw it all away. Not fresh, very oily tasting and left an unpleasant after taste. I went back today for sushi and it was edible but it did not taste fresh. It had an unpleasant under taste. Also the restaurant smelled like old burned grease. After driving a few hours and getting to the hotel we were highly disappointed at the restaurant options the hotel provided. We decided to order out for delivery. Their fried rice is delicious! Not overly salty, not too much soy sauce. The shrimp in the hibachi dinner were surprisingly large and tender (not over cooked and chewy like some places). The beef was ok but not my favorite.. would have preferred it to be a little more tender. The free edamame were delicious and pleasantly surprised at the amount given. Definitely enough to share. Not over cooked. Not undercooked. The only negative was that we would have liked a side of salt to add ourselves. And the beans themselves were LARGE! I'm so glad this place has opened. It's right across the street from me, so I was hoping it would be good. There's nothing like it close by. Luckily, it's delicious! They were running a special discount during opening week, so I ordered way more than I would have and was not disappointed. Even without a special, the prices are great. Our sushi was fresh and flavorful, the takoyaki wasn't chewy and had great flavor, and the tempura was light and crisp. Everything was delicious. Looking forward to trying the ramen and habachi next. I've been to Sumi twice now. I love it. The food is delicious and not overpriced for the city. Once I was there just for sushi. They have sushi happy hour from 12-4 everyday. 20% sushi rolls. Not off your order 20% off each roll. The second time I tried the shrimp habachi. Go hungry because it's so much food. Soup and salad are included but the meal also comes with fried rice, steamed veggies and a protein of your choice. A lot of food for $18.95. The servers are lovely too. I went as a single diner this last visit and didn't feel like they were trying to kick me out. Sumi is BYOB too. However, I tried the tonkotsu ramen with pork belly and the broth was lacking some flavor and the noodles seemed over cooked. Went here with my girlfriend and as soon as we walked in we weren't greeted by anyone and thought it was closed until we walked in even more and someone was there and hand gestured us to sit. The restaurants look is very nice and cozy and there were many options to choose from on the menu. They did have music playing that fits well for a sushi restaurant however later on the music took a wrong turn and went to playing music I wouldn't find at any restaurant. Our waiter as he was taking our order was very quiet and barely spoke but when he did it was a muffle where I couldn't make out any word he said. We ordered sushi, soup, and an appetizer, we got waters too. However our entrees and soup came before our appetizer which confused us but didn't mind. Our waiter never checked up on us after giving our food and my girlfriend needed a refill for water but there was no sign of our waiter. The sushi was good I got the tiger roll and the pop up. My seafood soup was good aswell (maybe needed some seasoning) and my girlfriend enjoyed her miso soup. We got an appetizer of fried soft shell crab and we didn't enjoy it at all there was barely flavor and felt like it needed seasoning. Our waiter finally returned but it was to hand us our bill that was it. Overall the food was okay, the restaurant looks great, the service was bad, and the ambience was below par.
