The interior is nice. Servers were friendly and helpful. I liked the big tv screen above the fireplace showing what dishes looked like. We ordered beef tongue, veggies, pork, eel, and other dishes and they were all really good. It was a little pricy but overall food was really good. read more

Unfortunately, we were not satisfied, especially with the Kung Pao Shrimp. It tasted like dish soap. The minced pork with pickled beans wasn't fresh, and the pork in the stir-fried dish wasn't pork belly; it was just lean meat, which was tough and overcooked. The bell peppers were not the right kind (not chili peppers), and the ingredients were incorrect. The portions were also small. I do not recommend it. read more

Perfect for sharing dishes w friends! Good for big parties as there are ample amount of space. Each main dish has a fairly large portion size that if you want to stick to one entree per person, that works too. Suuuper quick service. Our food all came out so fast! Eggplant dish with string beans was the favorite!! Also get black rice! Purple yam bao is nutty/roasty with a hint of sweetness, and the dough's consistency is perfection - pillowy with a slight bit of pleasant chewiness like a good pita bread or potato rolls. I personally loved the stir fried noodle but it had mixed reviews from my friends. If you like slurping slippery thick udon noodles, I think you'll like them! Would get cucumbers or cabbage dish to lighten the dinner with same veg and crunch. All in all, all the vegetarian dishes were very well seasoned and cooked. The meat dishes had very good flavors but lacked the palatable texture that makes meat dishes amazing... but maybe I went on a wrong day. I'm told the seafood dishes are amazing so def coming back! For example...: Red braised pork belly - wish it was braised longer. Didn't have that melt in one bite sort of quality I expected. Nor is it crispy. So... yea. Comforting flavor. Sweet ribs - really really good sauce, but again... wish it was braised longer or something. Every now and then the meat was fall off the bone tender but majority was little tough. read more

Sumiao Hunan Kitchen is a great place if you want to stop by with friends and enjoy an authentic, hearty, Chinese meal. Each dish stands out alone with its own set of dynamic flavors kicked up by spice. As someone who has an extremely low spice-tolerance, I can confidently say that Hunan definitely knows how to properly balance spiciness and not make it too overwhelming (so long as you talk to them about adjusting the spice level, of course). The whole fish on foil was steamed to perfection, with the flesh being exceptionally tender. The sauce was sweet and perfectly complemented the savory fish. Eggplant and string bean is a classic Chinese dish, and Hunan did not disappoint. Eggplant was soft and sweet, and the string beans were a great compliment. The pork and vegetables were another great combination. The fatty pork was sweet and succulent, and the mushrooms were tasty and chewy. The beef yellow river was quite spicy, but did not district from how tender the beef was - thinly sliced and simply melted in my mouth. Finally, the shrimp and melon was truly an exceptional balance of salty, savory, and sweet. The melon was juicy and sweet, shrimp was savory, and the sauce that coated the entire dish brought together the two components into one, flavorful and cohesive package. Of course, had to order dessert. The Spumoni bomba was a great and refreshing conclusion to the meal. Definitely come here with friends; you won't regret it, I assure you. read more

I'd use one example to illustrate how little amount for the dishes I received. Can you find the beef? To support the local restaurants during Covid-19 time, I often order the deliveries, today from Sumiao. The amount for each five dish is ridiculously small. Very disappointed. read more

Highly recommend if you are staying in Kendall Square for leisure or even for a work travel. Services quick, friendly, even sitting at the bar the bartender help me pick out some super yummy and crispy/crunchy spicy Korean fried wings. Mostly dry, no need for dipping sauce but add a side of rice and you'll be in business. Came back again to try some of the Japanese whiskies on the rocks and it was delicious. Pair with some of their soupy dumplings and you won't regret it. Extra perk is that they have live music performance just about every night inside. read more

Walked in on a week night for dinner and we were seated immediately. The atmosphere is cute and esthetic, they had a lot of fun colors all over! Indoor and outdoor seating was available ( patio had 1 heater stand in the middle) Each table had an attached menu with specials & QR code. Hand sanitzer bottles were available throughout the resturant inside. We got 2 drinks and a few dishes. The Nom Numb Wings were spicy but crisp and delicious! I wasn't really impressed with the lamb or noodles. Barely tasted the cumin and was quite overwhelemed with the amount of onions in the lamb dish.. The food was okay, flavforul, but not enough for me to get again. A few friends got the spicy crunchy cucumber which tasted great (more on the sweeter side and didn't get much of spice). We also ordered hot and sour soup, but never came out :( Overall, I thought it was pretty expensive for what it was. read more

The place is very hip and authentic. Although, I feel like I can't really appreciate it because I'm not familiar with the dishes or it's origins. Because I'm always checking out events on Yelp, I saw the Devil's Nest and wanted to try it out! I didn't taste much alcohol, but on the rim of the cup, there's spicy dip that is usually used with mango placed on it. The presentation looked awesome too! My main dish was the Hop Hop (spoiler, it's a rabbit!) If you order the authentic version, it comes out with huge red hot peppers that have been fried so much, you can eat them like chips! First time eating rabbit, it's very soft and tastes like chicken. It probably can't be helped, but I kept biting into bones. To Ninon, our waitress who's beginning her first week there, I'd say you did a fine ole job. Like I said, no pressure, it's up to you to make sure I come back and I will! read more

This place offers some of the best Chinese food in the Kendall square neighborhood. They have a wide selection of teas from all over the world and brew it on the table. It's usually packed after office hours till closing time and highly recommend getting a reservation. Ambiance is slightly cramped with several shared tables and plenty of seating at the bar. Overall the food was not very good but still very expensive, which has become not too uncommon at this point. However the real kicker was that one of the recommended dishes was called "Bhudda's Hand with Chive Blossoms" which sounds delicious! However that dish does not have ANY Bhudda's Hand fruit NOR ANY chive blossoms. It is literally just cucumber and chives sautéed. HUH??? And thats $22!!! The place seems fun and has a nice vibe but the food is absolutely overpriced and nonsensical. Also, one of the stir fry dishes bizarrely was more bone than chicken. Service was fine, except the waitress couldn't understand why I was surprised about the fact that the "Bhudda's Hand with Chive Blossom" did not have a single piece of Bhudda's Hand nor Chive Blossoms. I'd give less than 0 stars if possible. read more

We got several items for takeout, and the cons dominate the pros. The Changso Flavored Chicken was made by chopping up the carcass of the bird, rather than first removing the meat from the bone. The result was that about 30% of the morsels had bone shards or ribs or parts of the spinal column in them. The main eating experience was using fingers and tongue to remove the pieces of bone Also, the food is much more expensive than at two other good Chinese restaurants in the area. And the restaurant added thirty cents for the takeout bag! That is nickel and dime irritation. On the pro side, the egg and vegetable noodle dish was tasty. And the restaurant uses pressed paper boxes, rather than plastic, as containers. The food can be reheated in the microwave without transfer, and is better for one's health and for the environment. read more

Good food, but it's quite pricey. Be aware that you will be offered rice when the food comes but they charge $3.50 a bowl. Also being seated by the window is very awkward because it is literally right next to a table on the patio, we were really up close and personal with the diners on the other side of the glass... they should give the table outside a little space so that they're not pushed right against us. They also handed me a receipt with the wrong items, but they handled it alright afterwards when I contacted them. Not sure if I would come again considering how expensive it was, but the experience was decent. read more

Had dinner there. In general, there is absolutely nothing special about this place except it is very overpriced and the portions are very small for the price. Most dishes cost around $30 or more for small portions of oily food filled with cheap vegetable. Most fish dishes use cheap type of fresh water fish easily farmed yet still expensive. Virgin drinks are also expensive and taste like sugar and colored water Only reason the place is popular is because of location near Kendal square with business people expensing meals and don't care much about the value. If you are looking for a good food , value and ambiance, this is not the place to go. For me, I will never go back there again. Terrible value. read more

We first tried Sumiao on 6/9 and we loved it. So we decided to place another pick up order with Caviar today but the second order had a missing item and one of the dishes were made incorrect. We only received 2 instead of 3 melted gold soup. Also, we asked no peanuts less onions for kung pao shrimp which did not happen. It came in with plenty of peanuts and onions. What's the point of leaving special instructions if you don't even read it? Sweet tofu pudding was a joke, no difference than those packaged ones from asian supermarkets. read more

Came for some appetizers and a drink. Delicious! Had the Hunan style tofu appetizer, which came with lots of hot peppers and garlic, and in a spicy sauce. Reminded us of hot pot. We also had crisp calamari with red peppers, and spicy cucumber salad. The cucumber salad had little cucumber rounds, which had a nice sweet and vinegary flavor. For drinks we ordered ginger saketinis. It was a bit sweet and vanilla-y for me, but quite smooth and drinkable. My favorite part was the spicy sweet ginger candy. read more

So bummed... Went here right when it first opened and it was somewhere new in the area... Lets go!!! Everything is delish BUT HOLY SHIT is this food spicy - Preface this with Im usually a girl who can take a little heat, but Holy Shit... My face hurts when I leave this place. Then we went with other co-workers who asked for NO spice, and it was still spicy - so be forewarned if you arent a spicy person... I fell in love with the Green Beans, OMG dreams are made of these... Have been about 8 times since we first went & I get the green beans (amongst many other things) every time... So I have been sick this week & feeling congested, wanted to go back to clear me up & get those green beans, ONLY REASON I WENT TODAY... and Yep, You guessed it.. What a delicious culinary experience to taste Hunan dishes that were unapologetically spicy and authentically Chinese served in a modern and lively atmosphere! The Baijiu cocktails tantalized the tastebuds. The balance of spices along with the freshness of the herbs were a delicate combination. The Mala Duck, Beef on Fire, Hunan Noodles, and Popcorn chicken were ordered and between two people, the portions were more than enough to keep our bellies full and allowed some take home to be enjoyed later. The delicious surprise was the pairing of the Beef on Fire with the Hunan Noodles; try this pairing if you have the chance! And the gelato desserts brought the wonderful dinner to a sweet end. Bernadette was a great waitress who was attentive to our needs and Sumiao Chen, the owner was gracious as she stopped by our table to greet us. Came in a group of 6. Food was served pretty promptly and in decent portions! The below dishes were just the right amount for all of us. Incredible. I was looking for authentic Hunan cuisine and had a mild panic attack when I first saw the restaurant... I thought that there's no way this super chic, full-service (bar), kitchy menu'ed place could have a shred of authenticity. Boy was I wrong. All their food is incredibly flavorful and if you dare go with "authentic spice" on some of their hotter dishes, be prepared to eat as if you were at a local spot in Hunan. Amazing Hunan-ese food (they do have non-Hunan options but I knew what to look for). Can't wait to eat here again. read more

Delicious food, great portions, and amazing service! I was a bit put off by the bad reviews, especially about portion sizes, but they could not have been more wrong. We cam for lunch and got the avocado meatball app, spicy cauliflower, street noodles, chicken wok, and gyoza. The gyoza were more app-sized, but everything else was a very hearty portion! My favorite was the spicy cauliflower- it had a good balance of veggies to meat, and was a good level of spicy. The service was very quick, and the food came out lightning fast! We were taking something home and they even gave us an extra helping of rice free of charge! Will definitely come back here! read more

The chive flavor was mild, which is perfect since I don't like chives lol. A touch of vinegar was definitely needed to cut through the richness! Sliced Fish Szechuan Style: Calling them "sliced fish" is a bit of a stretch; "fish fillets" would be more accurate. They were probably made with basa fish, and the fish was incredibly tender, almost melting in your mouth. The broth was fragrant, and the numbing and spicy flavor was authentic, earning high praise from my friend from Sichuan. The workers were a bit frustrated saying they weren't missing any banh mi orders, but my friends definitely didn't get their food yet. By the time they gave us the missing sandwiches, I was pretty much done with my meal. I always want to support local small businesses so I'm giving them grace. The food and drinks are amazing. The spicy crunchy cucumber was refreshing and flavorful. The ginger and scallion chicken was also well-cooked, comforting, and nicely balanced. The only dish that didn't quite land for me was the sweet sticky rice cakes. The flavor was decent, but the texture was not what I was expecting. That made it harder to enjoy. Our reservation was originally for three, but when we called to add three more people, the hostess was incredibly accommodating and made it happen without any hassle. The customer service was excellent from the start. The real standout of our visit, though, was David, our amazing server. He was friendly, patient, and incredibly helpful. Some of us were new to Sumiao, but David had great recommendations for cocktails, mocktails, and dishes, ensuring we had a well-rounded and delicious meal. His attentiveness and positive energy made our dining experience even better. David gets an A+ for his service, attentiveness, and all-around great vibes--I'd love to have him as my server again! One of my favorite restaurants in Boston!! Super authentic Hunan dishes (and some other Chinese regional delicacies too) The green pepper century egg dish is so... spicy... but SO flavorful. I order it every single time even though I could barely stand it lol. Cocktails err on the sweeter side but I've really enjoyed their fun creations. Jahunger truly delivers. The restaurant immediately sets the mood. Candlelight, the scent of incense, traditional instruments on the walls, and pothos plants growing from mounted glass jars all make the space feel warm and inviting. One warning: unless you arrive around 6 p.m. or earlier, expect a wait. (It's popular.) Oh, and the food is worth it. The leek and egg dumplings tasted homemade in the best way: slightly rustic, fresh, and delicious. The hand-pulled noodles are the stars. Every noodle dish we ordered had the perfect chewy texture. My favorite was the Laghman noodles, though the Jahunger noodles were a close second with their rich spices and satisfying heat. The mee fen and stir-fried green beans both packed a respectable kick and leaned a little salty, but not enough to keep me from happily polishing them off. Don't forget the tea! It's beautiful to look at, filled with all sorts of ingredients (Chinese jujubes!), and only lightly sweet, which I appreciated. Then came the showstopping honey cake. The cake itself was fluffy, while the filling had a firmer, almost sticky texture with deep caramelized flavors that reminded me of burnt caramel in the best possible way. Paired with what tasted like coffee ice cream, it was the perfect ending to the meal. Jahunger is one of those restaurants that makes you want to come back before you've even paid the bill. I'm so glad Jahunger made it to Cambridge; the Boston food scene is richer because it's here.

We decided to order the non-spicy one since others were not big fans of spice. When we received the food it was very spicy. It was hard to eat and we did not enjoy it. The waitress came back and thought we wanted the spicy chicken stew which was incorrect. She apologized and wanted to switch it. At this point we were running late so it didn't matter. We just packed it and gave it to our family member who likes spice. This place was okay. I will have to come back here and give it another chance.

Green Pepper Mao Xue Wang 青一色毛血旺: My first time trying Maoxuewang with green peppers, and it was surprisingly fresh and clean, with a medicinal aroma.
