My friend had the beef teriyaki bento box. I had number three on the lunch combo. My lunch combo came with sweet and sour pork It was mostly breading the pieces of pork were very tiny. A lot of co-workers recommended this place, plus there was a sign out front advertising a $1 nigiri sushi special. How could I not try this place out? I came in just before 1500, the end of their lunch service. The restaurant was mostly empty, no one was at the sushi bar and only three other tables were occupied. the waitress promptly brought me a menu, ice water, and hot tea. It was a good start, but unfortuanteyl, it was kind of downhill from there. There was bulgolgi on the menu, so I figured this was Korean owned place. I opted for the bento box b (chicken teriyaki, fbbq pork fried rice, pot stickers, half a california roll, vegetable tempura, and soup). I ordered 2 pieces of hamachi, two peices of tai, and 1 piece of salmon from the limited nigiri menu. After she took my order, my miso soup was quickly brought out. The soup had good miso flavor, wasn't too salty and had lots of tofu in it. After I finished the soup, I expected my sushi to be brought out, so I sat there, first finishing my tea, then my water, and waited. I noticed the sushi chef wasn't behind the counter I figured he was on a break, so I continued to wait. After about 20 minutes the sushi chef had returned and was yucking it up with some regulars that had sat down at the bar and the waitress finally came around and refilled my drinks. I waited a few more minutes before my order was finally brought out, followed shortly with my sushi order. I quickly attacked the sushi I was so hungry. Wow, I guess I shouldn't have expected so much for a buck. The rice was just regular white rice, not vinegared or seasoned, not warm, and not fluffy. It was densely and tightly packed and flavorless. The fish wasn't bad yet, but it definitely wasn't the freshest. Next was the bento box. The california roll was nothing special. The potsickers/gyoza were deep fried and the skins were a little chewy. The filling was nothing memorable, but they did provide a dipping sauce. The vegetable tempura was below average, the batter was a little too thick and some of the vegetables were burned. No tentsuyu, I guess I was supposed to use the gyoza sauce. The fried rice was okay, some of the bbq pork was a little old (ie hard as a rock). I think the bento would have been better if they gave white rice to help adsorb some of the teriyaki sauce. The chicken was good though. After finishing, I just wanted to get out of there, but the waitress was talking to another employee who had come in on his day off while she was waiting for her replacement to start. By the time that happened, a bunch of new customers had come in and so the new waitress had to help them, get their orders, etc, so more waiting. Finally get the check, put my card down, and more waiting. I feel a little bad for the waitress, she had several tabels to take care of and the sushi chef was doing nothing but socializing with his friends at the sushi bar. My total bill for 5 pieces of nigiri and the bento box with tip was $18.35. I really wanted to like this small Japanese/Korean restaurant, but after my experience I just couldn't. If the sushi chef is the owner he really should take some pride in his restaurant, help out the waitress, and try to improve customer service. read more

Hidden Asian dining treasure in Coo's Bay! We were craving some Asian food after weeks of traveling and found this little place. The Korean tofu soup and bimbimbap was perfectly seasoned. The portion size is HUGE and the prices are so good. We got to chat with the owner and she has a heart of gold. UPDATE: Another after-movie visit - this time after "Hell or High Water" (very good BTW). We both had Korean style dishes again. Bimimbab (again!) for me, Spicy Tofu Soup for my wife. It took a loooonnng time to order then to get our food ... about 55 minutes in all before we were eating. While we were waiting the server brought one small dish to share of cucumber chunks that had been splashed with rice wine vinegar. My Bimimbab also came with soup or salad. I opted for salad with house dressing. The greens were fine, but the dressing seemed like just another splash of rice wine vinegar. Then they tossed on a few of those crunchy La Choy chow mien noodles to make it seem Asian. Both main dishes were pretty good. Although lurking at the bottom of the "Tofu" soup were two whole mussels, a couple chunks of scallops, and a lone tiny shrimp. Not a big deal for my wife who isn't vegan. But what if a person were severely allergic to shellfish? Or if they were keeping Kosher? Pretty sloppy. A big annoyance was that the price of Deschutes Pale Ale on the menu was $3.50, but was priced as $4.25 on our check. When I pointed it out to our server, she claimed the "right" price is $4.25, but that all the menus have a "typo." But out of the goodness of her heart, she changed the bill to $3.50. Thanks! Um, bullshit. Pardon my French. If the price on the menu is $3.50, then the "right" price is $3.50. And i really don't appreciate being made to feel like a cheapskate just for asking to be charged the menu price. Here's a better idea than making your customer feel foolish. Get a felt pen and change the f-ing menus. Better yet, redo those grungy things and fix the "typos" while you're at it. We've quit eating at places over less awkwardness. Otherwise, the more we see of this is place, the more convinced we are that the few Korean style dishes are the only reason to eat here. For your other Asian dining requirements ... Tokyo Bistro in Empire. *** After seeing Star Trek Into Darkness -- if anyone can succinctly explain the whole dual Spock plotline, i'd be much obliged -- we really wanted to try something new in town. After much agonizing and Yelping, we settled on this. Well, the experience we had couldn't have been a bigger improvement on our first attempt (when we finally walked out after waiting in vain fir any kind of attention. Our non-Asian server was great -- polite, attentive, and engaged. The "secret menu" (holy shades of In 'n Out Burger, Batman!) Bimimbab was as good as my favorite at Kim's BBQ in Nanaimo, BC. The very hot pot seared the rice and fixings to a perfect golden crunciness. The thick chili sauce was earthy and just spicy enough. All the ingredients were fresh and tasty. At $13.95 including soup or salad, and with a Deschutes Mirror Pond Pale Ale for $3.50, this place is definitely being added to our local drotation. My daughter and I were hungry after we got done working and wanted to go to EZ Thai. They weren't open so I thought, well why not, we'll just pop into Sumin's for lunch. We have not really had a bad experience here before and food wasn't terrible. Walked in, not busy, 3 dirty tables with one looking like some guests had left before ordering as there was menus and a couple glasses of water. Fine maybe it wasn't for them. OR MAYBE, they went to the restroom and caught a glimpse of their disgusting dirty kitchen like my daughter did. We had already received our food when she went to the restroom. After her telling me what she saw I decided to do a walk by also and see for myself. I've been in the food industry almost my whole life and what I saw was blatant disregard for food health and safety. Now as I said before I've been in the food industry for a very long time and I understand that during a rush things can get messy and look worse than it actually is. But no, their slow cookers they use were so caked with food like they never get washed. And it was just plainly dirty. Everything was dirty. Food is bland and in my opinion just not worth the money. Their front counter is just as cluttered and dirty. Anyways to my most important part of this post that I haven't even gotten to yet is that I think in turn with their disregard for cleanliness I am currently sitting on the pot writing this post. Both my daughter and I have been tag teaming the pot and both woke up with very upset bellies. I cannot stop and it's like a waterfall. I will never come here again. I think they need a visit from the health department! The tuna we got in our rolls I should've known not to eat as it did look like it was a little discolored. If you want sushi there is way better in coos bay than this place. Every time we've gotten rolls here at Sumin's they always fall apart like they're not rolled tight enough. This is one of my all time favorite places in Coos Bay. My co-workers and I have this as our regular meeting place, and have for years. They are excellent for lunch or dinner, and I've always had consistently wonderful food here. Hopefully they've opened up the other side more, as seating was pretty cramped there for awhile. The gal during lunch was awesome, in spite of really needing help during the busy time. My favorite dish is the Salmon Teriaki (I believe it's Lunch Special #8). It comes with a japanese salad and some steamed rice (or fried; your preference) + miso soup. I simply can't get enough of this. And I love that they give extra sauce. I just know not to eat it right before giving blood, LOL (made my blood pressure jump from the extra salt I guess ... tho it was WELL worth it :)) I still have intense cravings for this, even 2600 miles away now.. My last meal there was during a quiet time and it was several minutes between when I got served and my friend got his food, which shows someone has their head up their ass in the kitchen. If you can put up with the so-so service and want a decent meal, go to Sumin's. You'll have to fight for a parking spot since it's right in the heart of the downtown district but if you're walking around the downtown area, it would be a good place to eat at. read more

I've loved Sumins for 10+ years and make it a point to visit nearly every time I'm back in the hometown. When I was a Junior at MHS, my buddies and I used to cut class to go pick up teriyaki chicken rice bowls, which we'd then take back and eat in the back of our trig class, haha... we never got in trouble, but even if we had it would've been worth it. I don't know what it is about that teriyaki sauce, but it's SOOOOO good and I've only been able to find something similar in one other restaurant (at Rascals on Bellflower in Long Beach, CA). We came here a lot when school was out, too... great vibe and the owners have always been super awesome (i don't know if they've changed over since 2002). Other tasty items... the lemon chicken, the pot stickers, that little cucumber + rice vinegar salad they bring you, bbq pork... and the sushi is pretty decent, too. read more

Went to summins today to get lunch for my co workers and when I got the food back and we all opened it up the sweet and sour chicken, pork, and fried rice had HAIR IN THE FOOD! I called and they kept asking me which dish had the hair as if they didn't believe me... then took my number to "call me back" I am so frustrated right now if you want clean quality food this is not the place for you. Just an FYI, Not only was the hair on top of the food it was mixed in with the rice! Update: the owner called me back and refused to refund my money and accused me of planting hairs and lying... I have never been more horrified and disgusted by a business I have been loyal to for over 10 years. I know this family and am beside myself with the conversation I just had with the owner. Let me start off by saying that I have been here a few times and food has been par and service in the middle as well. Today though the food started out very good, service was excellent. However about half way through my soup I found about a 12" long black hair. I notified the waitress and she promptly brought me another cup. We finished our meal and the check came. Went in for dinner tonight and have to admit I was expecting better. The service was friendly and the location quaint. The food on the other hand wasn't that great. I'm right by the ocean and usually that means fresh tasting seafood and while the sushi was good enough, but it certainly did not taste super-fresh. My scallop roll tasted of mayo ... at least I think that's what it was and my rainbow roll had little flavor other than crab - even though it was covered in fish. But since I've moved to Eugene it's slipped down A LOT in my eye. 10 years ago this place was the best....but as time went on it has let itself slip a lot. This restaurant is the pick of the litter when it comes to Asian food in Coos Bay, they were voted the best South Coast Asian Restaurant for 2009 by the local paper. But that is like being voted the best oral hygiene at an Ozark family reunion. The seating is cramped, and very limited. The service is somewhat remiss, but it helps if you speak Korean. The food was actually fairly good they have a pretty good Sushi menu and the non-sushi choices are fairly expansive. Good enough that my better half and her sister could order food and not complain about how much they wished they had gotten something else. But I did have sushi. Their nigiri was very good and their specialty rolls were also very good. I also ordered the sweet and sour chicken but was too full to eat it. It looked good and the old sister in law assured me that the taste met her expectations. Only food related faux pas was their edammame. Being Asian they should know that they do not need to steam the piss out of it. From what I gathered listening to the staff talking amongst themselves, home coming was later that day, so the staff seemed preoccupied with how busy they were going to be. Sushi was OK. I was excited when I saw a restaurant in town finally had pho. Took my sister to dinner here last night and I have to saw it was the worst experience I have ever had. Our appetizer didn't come out. My sister for her sushi and I was given sushi that I didn't order. Sat for another half an hour without any food. My sister is finished with her food by this point out appetizer still hadn't come out and I still didn't receive my pho. The people next to us that came in 20 min after us received their food. After sitting for over an hour I cancelled my ordered to leave. This experience was beyond ridiculous and I don't know how they are still in business with service like this. The waiter was very friendly, but overworked. He was working the entire restaurant by himself. Doing the best job he could personally do. The kitchen staff and owners need to get it together. I LOVE sushi and living in Southern California I have loads of choices. When I finally found a sushi place driving thru Oregon coast it was my first and only choice. Service was actually decent. I wish I could say the same for my food. I knew better before ordering but I got the Andy's combo 2, the chow mein tasted like it was cooked in a dirty pan with rancid oil and no seasoning. The sweet and sour pork tasted like they soaked a dirty sock in the sauce. The pork fried rice was too starchy with little to no flavor and the pork was dry and non memorable. The hot and sour soup was by far the worst hot and sour soup I've ever eaten. The only thing I ate was the fried shrimp because they were palatable. I took a few bites of each item and decided I would be better off not eating any more. I was still hungry so I decided to eat some of my girl friends bento box. The tempura shrimp were limp and rubbery the pork was dry and the Katsu chicken tasted as if it were cooked in oil that had been used over and over for months on end. The best thing was the tempura veggies. The server was kind but didn't seem to wonder why neither of us ate our food. Glad I'm not gonna go back to this place again. read more
