Visiting Coos Bay for the week, an acquaintance recommended Sumin's. Unfortunately, we ate there tonight. First, the service was bad. It was also slow. There were 3 other tables with people (3-top, 4-top, single, and my wife and I) and a couple people at the Sushi bar. I watched another diner have to walk to the counter and ask the waitress for more water. I also had to ask for more water. And still our food did not arrive. About 25 minutes after ordering our food arrived. Waitress couldn't remember who ordered what: "It seems like forever since I took your order". It seemed like it to us as well. I got a combination dinner #2. Chicken chow mein, sweet and sour pork, fried prawns, barbecue pork. The chicken chow mein was cool on the edges and piping hot in the middle and mostly without flavor. My wife and I had quite a discussion about how it was possible for food to be that hot in the middle, yet cool on the outside. I'm sure some thermodynamic laws were violated, but I didn't know what agency to make the report to. The barbecue pork was barely warm. The sweet and sour pork was little morsels of inedible, incredibly chewy tasteless meat (probably meat. Yes, I think it had to be meat.) under a pineapple ring with a cherry. The meal came with fried rice that was made with some of the oldest leftover rice I've ever had. I would have thrown it out before making fried rice with it at home. Crunchy, yet stale at the same time. Another anomaly. I was able to eat some of the chicken chow mein after a liberal dose of soy sauce. The only thing I enjoyed was the prawns... ...then I gave my prawns to my wife. She got Andy's special #3. Broccoli and beef with prawns and more of the God-awful sweet and sour pork. The broccoli was overcooked to the point of sogginess, which was nicely set off by the chewiness of the overcooked beef that was with it. She also experience the same thermodynamic anomaly that I noticed with my chicken chow mein. Fission maybe? Anyway, I gave her my prawns so she would at least have something she could eat. The bill was $26.90. Almost all of the food went back uneaten. We couldn't bring ourselves to eat the fortune cookies that came with the bill. There is only so much disillusionment any normal person can take in one day. The worst part is, I'm not normally someone who complains. Normally I vote with my feet if I don't like a place. In my 50 years I have never before written any kind of review on a restaurant. I can't remember the last time I went out to eat and didn't clean my plate. Avoiding this place like the plague, though, won't save others from being ripped off by Sumin's. In summary, this is absolutely, without a doubt, the worst food I have had in probably 30 years. I'm not talking the worst Chinese food, or the worst Asian food, or the worst non-American food, I'm talking hands-down the WORST FOOD I HAVE HAD IN MANY, MANY YEARS. After telling the waitress how bad the food was and giving her a 7% tip (yes, I overtipped for the service we got) I walked out of the joint disappointed, angry, suffering from a sour stomach and vowing to tell the world about the crappy food and service at Sumin's. You couldn't force me to go back. read more

Comfortable atmosphere, lovely service, and great food! We had a few sushi rolls and kung pao chicken and were so pleased and SO FULL.

Absolutely delicious. I'd say that their teriyaki bowl is their signature dish, though most people just opt for chicken to go with their choice of rice or noodles. In reality, the best option is their spicy beef bowl, and ask for an ample portion of their teriyaki sauce, for it's truly the best in town. Their eggrolls are deep-fried tubes of awesomeness, and my best friend swears by their sushi (which you can even get deep-fried!). The service is fantastic and the family-owned business deserves your dollars. Help support local businesses, and be sure to tip generously to the hardworking staff that helps make it a dinner/lunch-worthy option day in and day out. read more

Stopped in here after walking out of the Thai next door becuz it was so HOT the sweat was trickling down my back. Walked in here. Front door open. Ceiling fans turning. Nice & cool. AND had great food to boot. I had the bulgoghi. Asked for soup & a salad, no rice. Miso soup w tons of tofu. Salad w a miso dressing. Mmmmmm gooooood. We ate here last week while spending the night. I had a combination that included shrimp and bulbogi, a Korean beef/vegetable dish. My wife had one that included chow mein and sweet and sour chicken. The food was tasty, the server was very conscientious and on top of our drink refills for our soft drinks, and the portions were generous. Mine was served in a bento box so it wasn't as enormous as my wife's. We took her leftovers back to the hotel and I was stuffed for breakfast. While we didn't have any sushi, I could see the chef at the bar laboring away all night long, creating the sushi fresh and with definite care. The sign out front says "Sushi-Japanese-Korean-Chinese". It may be a bit of a stretch, but judging from what we had and saw, this is a quality place with great food. read more

Sorry so long to post my review. Birthday trip, up the coast from Eureka, chasing the sun, and ended up in Coos Bay. Googled "Sushi in Coos Bay" on my phone, and saw the previous reviews. "Hmmm, 50/50 chance," and we took it. So glad we did! So many choices, we settled on the KU platter, and a Crazy Roll. Miso arrived, delish! Green tea, hot, strong and right on target. Lovely waitress, very attentive, lunch time, and she was at my elbow every few minutes. The Sashimi was fresh, and taste was very, very good. Rice was what I expect from a sushi house. Sush was eye candy, and taste was excellent. Needless to say, we didn't need both the platter, AND the Crazy Roll, but made a very good late night snack from the hot tub overlooking Coos Bay. Would I return? As my friends from the South would say, "hell yeah!" Thanks to my lady friend for the weekend, and a great birthday. I've been eating at Sumin's since 1992. I love the food and the people who wait on me. I recently started meeting a friend there every Sunday at noon, and the service we receive is outstanding and personal. I usually order extra so I have a meal for the next day. Favorites of mine are: Sweet and Sour Chicken, Fried rice, Tempora (delicious when reheated in the oven the next day--the order is so generous I can't eat it in one setting.) these reviews surprise me, I musta showed up on all their good days! When I visit I get the tempura, bento boxes with chicken and I am a fan of the noodles :) We get to go orders and they are always correct. Not a ton of competition in Coos Bay but they delivered on quality, taste and great service!

While the service is wonderful with kind, friendly and attentive servers and sushi shokunin are amazing I have to say I have tasted better. In fact I dined here several years ago and the quality was much better. The ginger is the same color as the ginger you would find in Safeway's Sushi kit you get in the deli ( pale in color not pink all, but it appears beautiful to the eye. I would recommend ordering a selection of your liking. I got the chefs special and it was not the best. I will say again the people here are amazing and the atmosphere is such. read more

I eat here at least once a month and always get the chicken teriyaki bento box. I love it and so haven't tried much else on the menu. Their hot and sour soup beats all the other restaurants that serve it in Coos County by a country mile. The bento box is a lot of food so go in hungry and you'll leave well fed and happy. The weekday waitress is a super friendly hard working lady who makes me a smile when I see she is working. Not easy serving in two separate rooms but she does it and does it well. read more

This is one of my most absolute favorite places in Coos Bay. Growing up whenever my parents asked me where I wanted them to take me for my birthday or a special occasion, I would always say Sumin's. The food is consistently good; however, they are consistently understaffed as far as wait persons go, just one. Be prepared for a longer visit (as in, sometimes you can't get in/out on your 1 hour lunch) during busy times, or better yet, phone your order in ahead! I've been there twice. The first time, I shared a couple different rolls of sushi with a few of my friends. Not good sushi. We also tried to order off of the menu that's in the table, but apparently they don't offer half of what is on it anymore, and they only leave the menus there because the owners think they look good. The second time, the restaurant was ridiculously understaffed and it took over 45 minutes for our waitress to even ask what we wanted to drink. Went there with my boyfriend and our 11 month old. Boyfriend always gets the Pho soup and absolutely loves it. I get an Andy special usually. Staff is always so friendly and helpful. They check in on you often and make sure you have everything needed. They were sweet about out baby making sure he was good and ok in the high chair, he was eating bean sprouts and cucumbers! Wow, great sushi in Coos Bay, especially for a Korean-owned Japanese restaurant! The fish was surprisingly fresh- apparently it's brought in from Portland. Best bets: tuna and octopus. Avoid the Chinese food that my FIL made the mistake of ordering. Prices are about half of what you'd pay in SoCal. Not the best service, but the food will satisfy your raw cravings. read more

My cousin and I stopped in to Sumin's for sushi while driving up the Oregon Coast. Red (our server) was awesome and very friendly! She took a few minutes to talk to us about the local culture and how Coos Bay is on a slant. My wife and I were craving sushi tonight and weren't sure if we'd find a decent Sushi restaurant in Coos Bay. Fear not - Sumin's came through! The sushi was very fresh and tasty - we had a mix of rolls and traditional sushi - two HUGE platefuls so we got our money's worth. The service was great too - super friendly server was chatty but not overbearing. Since it was a Tuesday it wasn't super busy and that probably helped but we were very pleased with the experience. Don't expect a ton of ambiance or decor in the restaurant - it is pretty basic. But if you want good sushi you won't be disappointed if you drop in on Sumin's. read more

I don't live in the area, but when I'm back in Oregon I plan on making a trip to Coos Bay to eat here. I just happened upon it 2 years ago when my extended family was camping on the coast. Hmm...Interesting. For a place that is Asian fusion (Chinese, Korean, Japanese food), the sushi is ok considering what is available in the area. Ordered spicy tuna roll, rainbow roll, and maguro. The sushi rice is bland and super dry, and for some irritating reason, the chef thought it necessary to sprinkle our spicy tuna rolls with that ichimi seasoning (the chili powder that is usually sprinkled on udon soup)..what??? Why, I don't know. The staff is friendly though, and maybe give their other foods a try? read more

Great food, good staff, low wait time, and fantastic atmosphere! I highly recommend the chef noodle special, the homemade pot stickers, and the egg roll. It's a little spendy, but you definitely get your money worth in portion size! The only problem is it's quite busy and in such a small building there's often nowhere to sit. read more
