This was our first time to Sumins and we were very pleased! We both got the bentos which we felt were awesome value. I got the beef bulgogi and DH got the short ribs. Both were excellent. As was the California roll, tempura,-and house made potstickers that came with the bento. Their miso soup was definitely not from a package. We also ordered the fried rice which was tasty, we also ordered two Bento boxes one with teriyaki chicken and the other with beef bulgoki both came with vegetable tempura, fried rice, and a California roll which was delicious. We also ordered 2 teriyaki chickens which was also good. The Philadelphia roll was good. Lastly we orders the Mango roll. It was refreshing but you have to love cream cheese. The dumplings were fried to perfection and really good. They had a good enough crisp and not soggy or slimy. We have been coming here for years and it is a constant favorite in the Coos Bay Area. The food is always delicious, not good; I mean delicious and they have some of the best sushi I've ever eaten, even in comparison to Seattle, San Francisco and Hawaii. My Mother and I have been coming here for years and it's my favorite place in Coos. The food is always wonderful, and the staff is usually very friendly. They are available for dine-in during covid, but at health standards. Fried rice, sushi, bento, teriyaki, dessert, it's all great! I tried the Pho once however, and it needed help. The meat slices were very overcooked, and it was very bland. Everything else has always tasted like heaven! My fav of course is the wonderful sushi, so much selection too! My only real gripe would be how loose and saggy the rolls seem to be getting lately, when the gentleman doesn't make them. Pretty difficult to eat with chopsticks, and I'm not the greatest with them anyway lol. That being said, I still give 5 stars because I love this place and I hope it stays forever! read more

We LOVE the sushi here! Please note that this review is entirely about the sushi. We have yet to try any of their other offerings. I am a newbie resident of Oregon, and this is already a steady favorite of mine. We first heard about the sushi from my hubby's brother, then his cousin, and then his cousin's wife. (Hubby and family are from here) Third chime's a charm - pardon the pun - so after not THAT much prodding, we decided to give it a go for the first time while vacationing here in January of 2013. We left full and very satisfied. One year later, while already an official resident, I asked to be brought back to Sumin's as my first eating out restaurant. Still the same great feeling of sushi satisfaction. Today on this brisk February night, we went again. Allow me to describe our dinner. We walked in and it looked quite bustling. A couple families and a few couples already mid-meal. There are only a few tables by the sushi bar, if memory serves me right there are nine tables? Or 10? But there were only two available. We grabbed a booth and the waitress who was at a table greeted us and quite promptly brought some water and menus (quick considering she was alone). See pictures for our selection. 1. I love the Sumin's combo... Indecisiveness's best friend. Our #1 had half a coos bay roll with an assortment of nigiri: mussel, egg, smoked salmon, tuna, scallop, and tako. Yum. I'd definitely try the other numbers next time. 2. Alaska roll - love salmon? Check. 3. Rainbow roll - classic sushi lover's favorite. For my recent experience, I just happen to drop in on probably one of the busiest nights ever in Coos Bay. Most if not all of the restaurants seemed filled with patrons. Perfect opportunity to observe how the restaurant truly operates on a full night. With that said... Service did seem rather slow but that was only due in fact that this restaurant and it's size can only accommodate so many patrons at a time and another factor that does play in is the phone orders and deliveries that Sumin's have to meet. When the restaurant is full, especially on the rare occasion that the whole town is pretty busy, do expect quite a wait but it's well worth it and there is a good reason why. For Sumin's, it's quality over quantity that still makes this place a stop in as the sushi chefs take great pride in making their sushi. After receiving my order of the regular Sushi and Sashimi combo, it still had that fresh taste and the presentation was simple highlighting the sashimi. Despite a demanding service, I do have to mention that the staff held themselves high as they still pushed through the night where some servers might break down on such a stressful dinner service. They maintained control of the kitchen and everyone's orders were received in a reasonable manner eventually catching up and successfully ending the night with customers leaving satisfied. In sum, I'd still recommend a stop in for this restaurant as it still holds its consistency in the quality of the food and sushi that this family makes but stand by for a lengthy wait should you walk in on a pretty busy night. read more

Ok, So I gave it another try, but it was worse this time around. I took my son with me and sat down and waited..and waited..and waited until finally we were waited on. My son ordered the orange chicken and I ordered the veggie stir fry. I took awhile to get our order, and when it finally came, it was luke warm not hot. My son's meal was covered in this fluorescent orange glaze that covered everything on the plate. Kinda scary, but he said it tasted ok. And my meal, well, kinda blah. Cheap sushi with quality still intact. This place has a great deal on specialty rolls because it includes 2 pieces of nigiri with the roll. Each roll is between 12 to 14 bucks which is average. I tried their chef special and was disappointed... There was a wide variety but not the best deal with a low quantity of fish. The California roll was a low end filler. Atmosphere was a little cramped but cozy. I have high expectations for something that says chef's choice and since I dont get to choose all my fish it better be fantastic. So if you go here... This used to be a great place. Service was HORRIBLE! Waitress brought soup with no spoons. Had to ask. Really? She surilly asked if we wanted tea. Yes, please. No more cucumbers or bean sprouts. We were the only ones there at first so it wasn't like she was busy. Then brought food which was very good - that's why 2 stars. Then my husband wanted more tea. Couldn't get her attention. So he took his cup up and she said she was busy. Really? How hard to pour a quick cup? He came back to table to wait. She never can back. He went back to counter. Still couldn't get his tea. When she finally came she brought a teapot. I told him Since I was paying for lunch, that I would not leave her a tip. Then he said, well, he'd pay. She's lucky or else she would've gotten zip. It'll be awhile before we go back. If she's there we'll go elsewhere. Disappointing. read more

First, the food is pretty good. BUT don't expect to get what you ordered. I intentionally chose the teriyaki chicken Bento box so that I could try the BBQ pork, and I asked for an egg roll instead of the tempura shrimp. And ginger dressing on my salad. Got home and found some giant tempura thing, not shrimp, and not an egg roll, no BBQ pork, and 2 sesame balls. And Italian salad dressing. When I called to ask, I was told they don't do BBQ pork anymore, and she couldn't tell me what I got in place of the egg roll. Such a disappointment. Nothing more I appreciate than consistency. This place is consistently good. In all our years of dining here, we've had ONE experience with a less than phenomenal server and the next time we went in... he was gone. Clean, friendly and the food is just YUMMY! I especially like it because unlike some places, there's incredible selections that actually taste good for non-sushi eaters like me. They have the freshest food in town. Been looking for good food and service sence I moved here. Exceeded expectations. Watched multiple groups come in after 8:30 when they close at 9:00. Honestly, don't this to hard working people when you know when they close unless you're going to tip them ALL the moneys. Seriously TIP THEM! A solid 3.5 stars. I had the Spicy Chicken combination lunch special, with brown rice ($1 extra). It came with a pretty big portion of chicken (mixed white and dark meat, some skin), a huge portion of brown rice (2 cups?), and a pretty big chunk of stir fry veggies, all served on an iron oblong plate that kept the food hot for the entire meal. The sauce was pretty good, though was far more sweet than spicy. The stir fry veggies were plenty greasy, and consisted of mostly bean sprouts, but also had carrot slivers, bamboo shoots, a couple of small broccoli pieces, onions, green onions, and mushroom slices. My partner had the Spicy Seafood Noodle Soup, which she ordered as "very spicy". It had a lot of ingredients, but for a reason she wasn't able to articulate it wasn't entirely to her liking, though in the end she did enjoy it, as did I. Excellent service, too. read more

This is like the 5th time I've eaten here but first time to review. IT IS EXCELLENT!!!!!!! My friend and I ate here tonight (9/10/2021) and everything was good. I had the salad and the dressing was gentle but well-flavored. My friend had the egg drop soup. I tasted it and without a doubt it was the best I've tasted, and I'm 67 years old. The appetizer, squid tempura was well done, well, I mean properly done, and the dipping sauce was great. Also had an appetizer which was stellar and then I had House Chow Mein. I've lived in Coos Bay for a year now, and I still can't figure out these guys. The food is OK, nothing special but decent for a small town that has only a couple Chinese or Japanese restaurant, but the big problem is that they are extremely difficult to get a hold of. I usually end up calling 5 to 10 times just to place an order. I invariably get either a busy signal, or an intercept that tells me their mailbox is full. It's frustrating, and it generally ends up in me calling one of the other restaurants in the block to order dinner. I try to buy locally, I try to support restaurants with takeout orders, but it is so hard to support a business that makes it extremely difficult to place an order. read more

I've been here many times with my family when we come visit Coos Bay. Every time we come here, everyone in my family loves their food. My favorite item is the Bento Box. It's like getting a little bit of all of my favorite things. Chicken teriyaki, vegetable tempura, rice, and potstickers! I also really like the yakisoba noodles. Delicious! Pros: Teriyaki sauce was good, everything was cooked very nicely, the food came super fast and our server was very relaxed and accommodating, definitely a very homey restaurant Cons: Not everything was as the menu said - Bento Box said it came with steamed rice, soup and salad, and 4 potstickers. However when it came I got fried rice, only salad, and only 3 potstickers. Fortunately, when I ordered white rice after, the server gave it free of charge very kindly. They brought fortune cookies at the end, but they were stale. The food and service was definitely good enough to balance out the cons, may come back if I find myself in Coos Bay again. :) read more

Nice atmosphere, food was decent. Sushi was so badly rolled it fell apart. Waitress was nice and refilled our waters regularly, but very poor service especially near the end of our meal. We could see her in the kitchen as we waited 10+ minutes done with our meals. You're better off going a couple miles away to Momiji's. Much better wait staff and food. read more

Sweet little spot downtown. Everything we had here was fantastic. The Fire Bomb roll is SO good (& spicy!). The sushi & nigiri was super fresh & delicious. Their pot stickers are the best I've ever had. Our server was very friendly, attentive, & helpful. We live in Southern Oregon & come to Coos Bay a few times a year. This is our new favorite restaurant! I can't waIt to come back & try more of their rolls. read more
