I love seafood. In fact, I would give up all other meats gladly. This place was more than I expected, especially for casino fare. If you only get one thing on the menu get the R.I. style calamari (spicy & greasy). It is the best calamari I have ever had in my entire life and I make it a point to order calamari every chance I get. I've had other fried calamaris with hot sweet peppers, but none match this dish. It is amazing, cream your pants good and you will definitely not want to share it. Not even with your mother. Sorry moms, but get your own. The baked shrimp with lobster & crab stuffing is also pretty delicious. I only shared this entree because I was full. That's exactly what I thought when I recently paid a visit to the Summer Shack in Mohegan Sun Casino before a rather epic Heart and Def Leppard concert that my awesome boyfriend got for my birthday. When we got to Mohegan, our original plan was to check out the Michael Jordan restaurant but then we realized that our 20% coups didn't work on Saturdays (womp womp) I'll admit, I wasn't expecting much when we walked in...until I saw the massive lobster tanks and seafood steamers in the kitchen. This place was pretty serious and I was becoming much more impressed. When we got the menu, it got even better. We decided to start with Lobster Dumplings (fried) and it was fantastic. Perfectly toasted and there was enough lobster in it to, well, make you believe that it was an actual lobster dumpling. My boyfriend went with his all-time favorite seafood dish: Fried Clams and I went with something a little more gutsy: Shrimp. Lobster and Chourico Gumbo. First the clams. Fried to perfection and tasted straight outta the ocean. My meal? Holy lobster. When I see that a menu decides to add lobster a dish, I assume it's like a claw and that much fills the quota. Not this place. I found 2 claws and half of a lobster tail! Along with about 6 shrimps and 5 slices of tasty chourico. I was stuffed and satisfied. The prices were pretty steep but it was well justified with the quality of food they provided. I agree with Steven P's review. I had the worst fish and chips I have ever eaten at this restaurant. They tasted like old fry batter and the fish was mushy. The worst part was that my mother had taken me here as a "last hoorah" before a surgical procedure that was going to make it difficult for me to eat much of anything for awhile. I ate about two bites of my fish and chips order and was shocked when the waitress failed to even acknowledge the fact that my food was barely touched. My mother ordered a lobster roll and was equally unimpressed. On our way out I wanted to tell the manager about our uninspiring experience. This place is definitely not cheap and I felt bad my mother had spent so much, only for us to stop for sandwiches on the way home. I have been eating oysters since I was a little kid. I like them in all different shapes and sizes. I have had everything from oysters I have dug up and shucked myself to farm raised oysters. We got some oysters this morning (see check). They were absolutely terrible! It tasted like they were soaked in saline or something.... Not sure. When I told the waitress to just throw the rest of them away, she looked at me like I was crazy. If you want good oysters, go to Fresh Salt in Old Saybrook. We also got some cherrystones, but they were really oversized (not little and sweet), and a little tough. The wood grilled lobster was enormous but bland, the mashed potatoes were ho-hum and the raw oysters, while good, were average (though they do offer an impressive selection of them to choose from). I want to tell you all a story. A story of a girl who was cold and lonely one drizzly, gray Connecticut eve. She was away from home, weary from work, and hungry. So very hungry. So she went to Summer Shack (Express) to order some food to eat alone in her hotel room and what she got was a warm, cozy hug in a box. A hot lobster roll with melted butter, crispy french fries, and a cucumber salad were just what this girl needed to feel snug and happy. So she ate her tasty food, watched the Modern Family Marathon and fell asleep with a smile on her face and a satisfied tummy. All was right with the world again. PLOT TWIST: That girl. Was. Me. (I'm just giving you all a minute to recover from this shocking revelation) The hot lobster roll does not skimp on the lobster whatsoever - in fact, bright, tender chunks literally spill out of the roll. The roll itself is soft and tastes quite fresh. Pour a little melted butter on it, and oh my. You are in for good times. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars, is the roll cost 20 bucks and doesn't come with anything. Fries are 2 dollars extra, and the salad was another 6. Other than that, if you're looking for a tasty seafood meal to-go, Summer Shack Express is a really great option. Poor customer service. We were advised our wait for a party of 6 would be a 45 min wait to an hour. Which was great because our whole party wasn't here yet. 10 min later we got a text our table was ready. We let them know our party wasn't here and they could not seat us until we had everyone. We were looking for a seafood place that was open late. Of course, that meant a trip to the local gigantic Indian casino in the area. So after the long trek from the parking place, we were happy we weren't the only ones looking for a late evening meal. I ordered the portobello mushroom sandwich and a Cesar salad. When I got the sandwich I was absolutely amazed at how tiny the mushroom was. Incredibly small! A huge WTF moment. So let me get into my mushroom rant. We all know that a portobello mushroom should be huge. If it's going on a sandwich, it needs to cover the entire bun! This one was the size of a silver dollar. Totally unacceptable. A couple of points. The master chef should have rejected all of these small portobellos when they came from their supplier. OR they could have fit 2 of these microbial sized fungi on the roll. But I take it the short order cooks in the back don't have the flexibility to make such a judgement call. To add insult to this already said sandwich, the roll was rock hard! Really? You go to these places expecting a decent meal with a sprinkle of common sense. We got neither. And the Cesar salad? The waitress completely forgot about it! The oysters were really good and the selection was also very good with options from Massachusetts, PEI, and Connecticut. The crab legs were roasted in a Garlic sauce and they were also delicious. I was here with my boyfriend on Sunday and we had a wonderful meal! Started with the Lobster Potstickers. I couldn't see pieces of lobster in them like I was hoping for but they were otherwise tasty. Because I checked in on Yelp we got a free bowl of chowder that was delicious. It was fairly crowded and the service was friendly and attentive. Our food came out super quick which was appreciated. I had the fried scallops and changed up sides with brussel sprouts and a potato pancake - it was awesome and a good size portion. I had plenty to share and bring home. He got the stuffed shrimp which was thoroughly enjoyed. Although it was pretty pricey ($100 before tip for 2 drinks, 1 app, 2 entrees) we felt like it was worth it. South Bay Blonde Oyster with Sashimi was perfect starter. Sort of a simple Japanese flavor perfectly in balance. They will break the budget if you have a budget. Cucumber and iceberg salad very good. It has exactly the right amount of pickled red onion on top. Very healthy start if part of your meal will not be. (I asked about the "classic" Caesar salad, anchovies? They can add them. Wrong answer. I did not explain that a Caesar salad from Caesar's in Tijuana is either Worcestershire or anchovies based... Never mind. What they have is the modern lettuce, dressing and croutons.) I ordered the cucumber and iceberg and was very pleased. There is a very full Lobster menu and cost is not my issue today, so thank you Yelp for the advice. I chose the 2 lb Wood Grilled Lobster. I love the taste and the way it is prepared. Much more of the lobster is available with this means including the use of a little stuffing in the body that absorbs the general flavor and was great. There was no ugly part, just a lot of great part. The Jasmine rice is great. (I substituted this for the corn cob). I added some green beans and it was more than I needed, but they are another healthy choice, and perfectly cooked also. Good late night snack. My 5 star rating is because you can get 5 star food here. Most of the locations at Mohegan have a mix of customers with a variety of tastes. Based on Yelp reviews and my taste for simple flavors, I chose to avoid sauces and I loved what I chose. Sub par food with sky high prices; bad combination. I ordered the grilled shrimp tacos that were on special that day. The tortillas were huge, but there were only five dinky shrimps spread across two tortillas. I had to cut each of my shrimps in half in order to be able to get a bit in each bite----and i still couldn't even get that! They were so small; and overcooked. Each bite of my taco was mostly just the slaw, which wasn't very flavorful. The cornbread was forgettable. Oh boy....what was I thinking. I knew it was going to be overpriced but come on now. The appetizer was pretty good, I had the buffalo shrimp. It wasn't overly spicy which is nice. However, you get six tiny little things, and for the price I paid? Not doing that again. The fish sandwich was actually pretty good, and the roll it was on made it even better. So it has that going for them! The bartender gave me a glass with a crack in it and I'm glad I caught it before I started drinking it. Watered down vodka martinis and clove in fish and crab soup. We were charged $28 for two watered down Ketel One vodka martinis. I'm ok with paying $14 per martini if I get what I ordered. These were the absolute worst martinis ever and it's pretty hard to screw up a vodka martini. Had we been sitting at the bar, we would have called the bartender out on it but we were at a table during a busy time before a show and really didn't have the time to go over this with a barely visible server. The fish and crab soup with rum was terrible and had a LOT of clove in it. Had they mentioned clove in the description, we would not have ordered it. The grilled shrimp was just ok with tasty coleslaw but that's about the only good thing I can say. Next time, we'll eat at a known restaurant that has vodka martinis, versus half water, half vodka martinis and clove with fish. read more

Selfish for shellfish, I insisted that my vic and me try Summer Shack, the only seafood restaurant at Mohegan Sun, for our last meal at the biggest and best-looking shopping mall, I mean Hotel and Casino, in CT. Guess it serves me right that I was disappointed by my small not-so-tender-or-juicy steamers and only slightly disappointed by the baked shrimp stuffed with crabmeat. I found the plate overall tasty, but imagined it sat in the fridge for a while--most-likely overnight--as the outer "crust" of the crab stuffing was hard and crusty, instead of the pleasantly crisp baked goodness I expected. The inside was moist and warm but not warm enough all the way through. Another disappointment was the alcohol or lack of! Perhaps our server forgot that she'd carded us?!?! But I think everyone agrees that there's a BIG problem with non-alcoholic cocktails. One very sweet lemonade, one koolaid-like key lime martini, and two dry grins later we contemplated the tip, if any. read more

I love it even more when the pit boss at the tables has been paying attention and posting comp points to my Mohegan Sun Player's Club card...The Summer Shack ain't cheap. For those Yelpers who are baffled or put off by the noise, the atmosphere or the menu, it might help to read Jasper White's bio at http://www.chef-opedia.com/Jasper_White/bio. This is exactly what Chef White intended when he conceived of the Summer Shack (there are four of them, three in greater Boston and the one at Mohegan Sun). An excerpt: "These large, high-octane versions of roadside New England clam shacks serve no-frills, high-quality seafood, local steamers, plump oysters, freshly steamed lobsters. The decor is casual, the atmosphere loud and boisterous, and White is having more fun than ever. "It's about rolling up your sleeves and having a good time," he says, flashing his trademark sly grin."" That's what it's all about. I never go there expecting a bargain, or an actual roadside clam shack. I go there because the seafood is always fresh and always delicious, and face it, you're at the casino! It's a night out. We don't head to Mohegan Sun with the expectation that we'll be coming home anything but a couple hundreds buck lighter. If we happen to win at the craps table or roulette wheel, awesome. Especially when the server swipes our Club Cards and we find that half the dinner has been comped. But enough about the casino aspect. What about the restaurant? First off; we've never eaten in the dining room, always at the bar. The 15' tall dining room walls are painted to look like salvaged, randomly-colored panels of rusted sheet metal. Corrugated steel awnings hang over doorways, and a massive chalkboard lists the daily catch and other specials. Like the review excerpt I posted above says, it's a clam shack on steroids. That's why we sit at the bar. It is right along the promenade, so you can people-watch, and the fresh shucked oysters (usually 4-6 varieties), are just a few feet away. You can order from the full menu, and since there are several people working the area, you don't have to wait for your server to come to your table. We've enjoyed everything from the fresh Ipswich fried clams, to wood grilled lobster; the Bermuda fish & crab chowder with dark rum, to sardines. One of my absolute favorites is the fresh fish Catch Of The Day prepared with Jamaican jerk rub -- this is not for the faint of heart, it be hot stuff, mon! But so flavorful when they have bluefish or dolphin (mahi) on the menu. Ask the chef...some types of fish hold up better to the blackening/jerking. They're happy to suggest a different preparation if there is a particular fish you want to try. Getting back to the lobster offerings, yeah, this is New England. Lobsters are a dime a dozen (I wish). But Jasper's clam bake (featuring a bucket of steamers, mussels, chourico sausage, potatoes, a lobster, and, inexplicably, a hard-boiled egg) is freakin' awesome. Take it up a notch (and check your credit card balance) by ordering the wood-grilled lobster. OMFG!!! There is a decent sandwich menu, but why bother, except for maybe the lobster salad roll? It is very tasty, not too heavy on the mayo, but it's just lob salad, not a roll full of warm buttered tail meat. At $22, unless you just hit it big down on the floor, I'm not sure it's worth it. About the only menu item we've craved but haven't tried is the Wednesday evening Chesapeake Bay Blue Crab Party (market price). Because it's only offered on Wednesdays (and maybe Thursdays if there are any leftovers). Who is hangin' at the casino on Wednesday night? All in all, I can't say that I've ever had a bad meal at The Summer Shack. In fact, I've had some downright awesome lunches and dinners. Yes, some Yelpers are put off by the prices and/or the intentionally kitschy atmosphere. But I still dig the place. Skip the gaming tables, enjoy an evening people-watching and cruising the stores full of stuff you can't afford, and saddle up to Jasper White's bar, at least for some oysters and a cold draft beer. Really. Do it. And put $10 on red for me. read more

First of all they gave us a table by the entrance for servers while the restaurant was half empty; then the food came out and it was disgusting ... calamari was sitting in a pool of grease and the crab cake was too soggy which I tired a bit but I decided to pass on it. About the dinning atmosphere, fight erupted between people on another table and we had our dinner while they were cursing each other out and no one thought they should give them a hint that they are destroying other customers dining experience. I was afraid that we would end up getting hurt there so we left the restaurant hungry with a bill for $100. There is no option for no stars but I would not recommend this place at all. read more

just a mess. This summer shack location is located in the food court a couple steps away from the actual summer shack restaurant upstairs in the dining concourse. This foodcourt location is extremely busy with very little room to stand and wait around for your order. There was confusion as to who was waiting in line, and who was waiting for their food to come out.. just disorganization in general. I got the front counter, ordered one corn dog to go and proceeded to wait for my food. My friend came by a few minutes later, and decided to buy food from this location as well. She was at this point in time already 15 orders behind me. One by one I see customers get their orders.. then slowly customers after me getting their orders. Now we are talking about full on baskets of food. Customers that ordered for 4-5 people getting their food before me. After about 15 minutes of waiting, my one corn dog was still not ready. It eventually came out about a minute later, but it just didn't make sense to me how probably food that amounted to close to 30 individual orders came out before my one corn dog. Very unhappy about that. My corn dog was decent. It didn't look like it was a generic store bought corn dog. The outside was a cornmeal jalapeno batter and the hot dog tasted like a beef frank. It was piping hot which was good, but not my favorite corn dog. I wouldn't go through that mess again for it. read more

A casino experience costs more but for the money you expect to be impressed. We definitely were NOT. We visited here on a Saturday night because we were out past 10 (after a concert) and casinos have the only restaurants open that late. The main restaurant here was also closed but they had a decent bar menu so we decided to give it a try. We started with oysters which were excellent - no complaints there. They're priced a LITTLE higher than other local sources at $4/per but blackboard are large and this was actually pretty reasonable IMO. We also had the corn chowder and enjoyed that as well. So far so good. The first mistake was the R.I. Calamari "spicy and greasy". This was a total letdown. It was dry, and the only "spicy" came from sitting in a sea of sliced banana peppers and jalapeños. There was no sauce at all, and this dish desperately needed it. Also a letdown, we were very obviously discussing what a letdown the dish was in front of our server, and barely made it a quarter of the way through it, but they didn't offer to take it off our bill. That's something I look for in a restaurant - it's a really good sign when they're proactive and the customer doesn't have to fight a charge. You expect to have to "send it back" in a chain restaurant, but not in a place that's supposed to be "upscale" (and charges upscale prices). This was a double failure for us. As a finisher we went with the fish tacos. These were actually very tasty and artfully presented. I enjoyed that the fish was included as small, breaded nuggets - the breading was very light and made a nice flavor detail (fish tacos are frequently just a pile of shredded or diced fish chucked into a taco - these were definitely "more"). But... whoever came up with this concept fell short at the last minute. They're filled with shredded cabbage almost cole-slaw style, and the cabbage is very tough and LONG - the strands were the entire length of each taco. They were very tough and hard to bite through, totally out of character with the taco, and every bite left you yanking out these long strings of cabbage, making it fall apart and a mess of your face. It totally ruined the experience to the point where for the first time in a Yelp review I find myself saying "these were the most delicious thing I will never order again." Sigh. Long story short, we didn't HATE the place - but we wouldn't eat here again and definitely don't feel it was $75 well spent. read more

Decided to try this place after playing the slots a little bit. Place was crowded and we were seated almost immediately and we ordered our drinks and we ordered appetizers. One of my friends ordered the raw clams and said they were delicious and i ordered the lobster and fish spring rolls and they were deep fried and stuffed with some creamy type of mushy fish and served with dry slaw in Thai sweet chili sauce. They were greasy and bland. My friend ordered the lobster pot stickers but when you took a bite, there was no lobster to be found just a boring tasteless stuffing of something we couldn't identify inside. My friend ordered the Jasper lobster which was the special on the restaurant and that seemed to be pretty good, I ordered the stuffed shrimp and came to the table looking like dried out blobs of breadcrumbs . It was so salty and stuffed with nothing but breadcrumbs when it was supposed to be stuffed with lobster and crab and so that was sent back. And then figured I'd order the lobster mac & cheese and that was a disappointment as well so I took a few bites and put it to the side. My other friend ordered the scallops and shrimp on a beet purée. She said it was good but to me it looked like a purple mess. The whole place was disappointing and I was Pissed but We ended up spending $85 a piece on this low budget seafood mess. I think I'll just settle for Pepe's pizza next time. 2/3/18 (6PM) - We had dined here several times before, but this time was a huge disappointment. There was an Asian concert this wknd at Mohegan Sun. Summer Shack was crowded just like every other restaurant. Out of nowhere, this short guy with a beard (whom I believe is the manager) walks out saying, "It's like China here!!" This made us walk right back out. I also heard him yelling at customers with baby strollers that they must leave them outside. If you can't handle the pressure in the service industry, maybe they should get a job where you can hide your disgusting scowl ! The two young hostesses who work with him also appear to have issues with pressure, as they too were treating customers disrespectfully. Disgusting Manager!Terrible. I'm really surprised at how many people (including my coworkers) love this place. After hearing so much hoopla, Summer Shack definitely did not live up to my expectations! So I've been craving a good bowl of chicken/shrimp/andouille gumbo since I left Alabama 5 years ago, and was THRILLED to see gumbo on the menu at Summer Shack! I didn't even have to think twice about ordering it. Well, this gumbo ended up being one of the most dissatisfying meals I've ever ordered. It looked and tasted as though someone had thrown a few pieces of shrimp and some bell peppers into a pot of tasteless brown gravy. The texture and flavor were way off. Not to mention, it was incredibly pricey...even for seafood. I normally don't mind shelling out for a delicious, well-prepared seafood dish, but this was not it. Especially since the restaurant's atmosphere isn't all that exciting or fancy, either. Part of me wants to go back and order some pan-seared scallops (or anything other than gumbo) just to give this place another chance, but another part of me just doesn't even want to bother. Came with a party of four. Waiter asked if we wanted to start with drinks. Three different beers, a Bloody Mary and the gals ordered two waters. Waiter came back with four beers and a water two beers were correct and maybe one of the beers was mine but then he saw the bug in it. I'll get you a new one and the Bloody Mary. Came back with the drinks and after a while asks if we wanted to start with corn bread and rolls. We said okay and then the entrees came out, then out comes the rolls. Nothing was horrible but as I ate the fish sandwich I got a nice 6-8" blond hair. Check comes and the mystery 4th beer we didn't order made it on the bill. read more
