Went last night for an early dinner around 530. We had made reservations a week or so ago but there were free tables so you probably could just walk in as well. The place is super cute and decorate well! It's clean and a everyone was so nice and attentive which made for a really welcoming environment. I really wanted to love the food but my Italo Peruano was way too spicy when the description on the menu/the ingredients listed didn't indicate anything that would give it that much heat. Also the steak was cut very large for being served in a pasta dish and in a bowl where it was very difficult to cut it. The Lomo was good but too salty. The dessert we shared however was amazing! We got the churros which came with chocolate sauce, strawberry puree and Lucuma ice cream! They told us it was a South American fruit! It's hard to describe the flavor but it was awesome! Kind of like a caramel/butterscotch with notes of sweet potato and maple syrup! It doesn't sound like it would all work together but it absolutely does! We were curious about this Peruvian Japanese place near a concert venue. We stopped in to find that it was in a former deli and has the charming icebox that's been in the building for more than 100 years. They were out of a couple of items on the menu which wasn't too much of an imposition. We opted for a salad and the Peruvian paella. Portions were large and much to our surprise we struggled to finish everything. Tasty food, but a bit too salty for me. Peruvian beer is delicious! Whenever I see ceviche on the menu, I almost always order it but especially at a Peruvian restaurant. This version featured Baramundi fish, lime juice, cilantro, onions, sweet potato chips, leche de tigre, rococo. There was a ton of fish, it was firm & super fresh, just the right amount of acidity, a little bite from the fresh red onion... put it all together on a warm sweet potato chip & it was the perfect bite! Note: The warm sweet potato chips were so awesome, we just had to have more! The chips were crunchy & slightly sweet, the perfect combo for the cool citrusy ceviche. On the recommendation of our lovely server, we then opted for the Spanish mussels with fresh herbs, tomato, onion, fennel, garlic, white wine & cream reduction, topped with toasted baguette slices. There were a good amount mussels nestled in a rich, creamy sauce that had us practically licking the bowl (no shame in our mussels game). By then, we were almost full but the next course was Pollo a la Brasa: family recipe for slow roasted chicken, fries, garden salad & aji verde. The chicken was tender, flavorful & perfectly charred - simple but perfectly executed. The sauce was a vibrant, herby green sauce that I would happily slather on everything. The ambiance is cozy yet contemporary, the service is attentive without being overbearing & every dish that came out of the kitchen had us planning our next visit before we even finished our meal. Canggio, located in a neighborhood in Norwich near Backus Hospital that's not usually known for modestly upscale dining options, is a cozy restaurant serving tasty, freshly made-to-order modern Japanese-inspired Peruvian cuisine served by friendly, helpful waitstaff. Inspired by the overwhelmingly positive Yelp reviews, my dining companion and I stopped into Canggio for dinner on a recent Saturday night before a show at the Mohegan Sun. The restaurant is located in a mostly residential neighborhood, so we were not entirely sure what to expect. It was a very positive sign that the restaurant was completely filled with a combination of folks grabbing dinner before heading over to the show and locals enjoying a tasty dinner out. Despite a packed house and being short a server, our server was very friendly and she took the time to offer some terrific suggestions for dinner. Even with an open kitchen and dining area (and a large table of 12-15 diners sitting at a table adjacent to us), the noise level in the restaurant was manageable and it was easy to converse with my dining companion without straining our voices. With so many appealing appetizer and entree options on the menu, my dining companion and I decided to split two appetizers and an entree. We shared the YuccaFrita ($12), a shareable portion of fried yucca served with shredded lettuce and a piquant Aji Verde sauce; the Ceviche($18), comprised of a shareable portion of white fish served in a sauce with lime cilantro, onions, celery, and salsa criolla, and topped with homemade potato chips; and the Aymara($30), a broiled Peruvian COFFEE-crusted (!) salmon filet and several pieces of broiled asparagus served atop a bed of spinach mashed potato. Everything we ordered was OUTSTANDING. It was obvious that all of our dishes were made with fresh, tasty ingredients and prepared with care and served quickly by the disciplined but friendly staff. Last minute decision and we stopped by Canggio on Sunday evening. We didn't know how close to closing they were, and we felt bad so we wanted to leave. The staff insisted we stay and were extremely nice. The place got a nice update, it looks great. I love the colors and light all over. The food was great. We decided to try a few new things. We tried the trio with Ceviche, papa a la huancaina, la Causa Salad. We loved the shrimp fried rice and their Cuban. We will definitely be back with a group of friends. read more

We happened to find Canggio on Yelp, after being at the Mohegan Sun and wanting to eat elsewhere. The food was amazing. I had the steak with tomatoes and rice, seasoned with garlic. The steak was as tender as I've had in any steakhouse. The seasoning was perfect. Dinner was topped off with their churros, which come filled and with ice cream. They were super. I got the Sangria, it wasn't too sweet, and it had the perfect mix of fruit and wine flavor. Chicharron: The pork belly was really crisp and juicy. Yucca: Way better than fried baked potatoes. If you haven't tried yucca, I highly recommend to try this to ease into the main dish. Chorrillana: The octopus was cooked very well. It wasn't too chewy. However, I thought the portion was pretty small. I was not full. The sauce and everything were very delicious. Creme Brulee: It wasn't too sweet and very flavorful. I just wish there was more crisp on the caramelized sugar. Mom and I both loved the saffron risotto with scallops and lobster cream. Decadent and cooked to perfection. The lobster cream was as rich and creamy as could be. I will look for this combo again! My husband and I ordered the Bloody Mary Del Mar. it was a perfectly mixed house made Bloody Mary mix topped with extremely fresh Oyster, shrimp and ceviche, meal in itself. My daughter chose a peach mimosa. I normally avoid these as they are generally overly sweet. This was not, it was delicious. For our entrees I chose the Peru Frittata. It was perfectly cooked an flavorful and large enough for me to enjoy the next day. My daughter chose eggs bene. The eggs were perfect and the sauce had just the right amount of lemon. The bread was crisp, not mushy. The guest of honor, my husband chose two eggs over easy over clam hash, with a side of spicy home fries. He said it was great. So glad we found Canngio. This is a local restaurant for me. We have gone for dinner several times, and for brunch as well and breakfast.... When I tell you that this place is really a magical place...You have got to take my word for it. The owners are amazing... The food is fabulous and the drinks are great as well. We wanted to order a certain dessert, but unfortunately , they didn't have any more of that particular item... The chef prepared a special dessert for us on the house. The Churros...OMG, the chocolate cake, the molten cake, the cheesecake, truly spectacular. This was our 2nd time for brunch on a Sunday. The food was excellent. The staff outstanding. The only complaint would be it was chilly inside today but the temps have been so low outside. Prices are very reasonable. Last time I got an omelet (you get to choose 4 fillings for the base price), my daughter go the stuffed French toast, and my son got the eggs and toast breakfast with home fries and bacon. This time I again got the omelet as it was exceptional. Daughter got the Benedict and son got the stuffed French toast. Everything was fantastic both times. Fresh and definitely all made in house. The omelette had ham, cheddar, mushrooms, and bacon. He said that the bacon really stood out to him. Sounded like a compliment. Lol. Both of these dishes came with potatoes. They were very delicious. So savory and the right amount of crusting. Daughter had the Nutella with fruit crepe. She loves it but by the end, it was too much sweetness so she took my husbands side of potatoes. Son ordered the stuffed French toast. He was disappointed to see fruit over it. Typical 19 year old but he ate all of it quick. It was stuffed with cream cheese and he added syrup over it. For a guy that was disappointed about the fruit, he ate every single bite. We were the only ones there when we got there but by the time we left, it was a full house. My boyfriend and I went here for the first time this morning, while looking for some brunch. We arrived and we were greeted by Jillian who also waited on us. She was incredibly sweet and friendly from the second we walked in until the second we left. We got the Chica Morada mimosa (with their house made juice) and it was AMAZING! As if that didn't make the experience great enough...then we took our first bites of the food we ordered. He got the De Chancho sandwich and I got the Lomo Crepe. Even the bar carries Japanese vodka and whiskey's influenced by the Japanese culture and history within Peru. The bartender was kind and conversational, and made me a phenomenal Mezcal martini. We were a party of 5 reuniting for the first time in a while! Our friends from Montana were home for a visit. We were there for quite a bit! We ordered dishes and ate them family style as we talked and caught up. The perfect way to try a little of everything. The wait staff was so wonderful and kind. The cooks we could see and hear as the kitchen is open. They could also see and hear us as we oohed and aahed over all of the dishes and savored every bite. If I could give this restaurant 6 stars I would! It's located on a quiet street in Norwich so eating outside, which is what we did, was wonderful on a warm evening. The food is AMAZING! Our waitress was AWESOME! There were GF options for some in our party which was a plus. Most of us had seafood (Coffee Crusted Salmon) but some had beef and they modified a dinner for our younger son. Appetizers were excellent - Yucca Frites (loved the dipping sauce) and Calamari. And the two drinks - nonalcoholic and the Strawberry Margarita, freshly made. We celebrated graduation with our family and the food, service and ambience were wonderful.
