Being a slower weekend, we were able to walk right in and be seated at Summer Shack on a Sunday night at 7pm. Our server, MASON, was AWESOME! We quickly and expertly attended to us in every way necessary. Waters were refilled immediately. He was a great listener and we knew we were going to have a fun time with him. Hurray for hiring waitstaff with a personality! (Mason, my apologies for ruining lemons for you by revealing that they are by far the dirtiest thing in a restaurant... LOL.). A study in 2007 found that nearly 70% of restaurant lemon wedges are covered in up to 25 different germs. Do not put that slice of lemon in your water unless you like drinking E. coli.
We ordered the cornbread with molasses butter fried calamari without peppers app (THANK YOU for offering that either way! Not everyone likes those peppers.). #3 didn't care for the molasses and Super Mason flew in with some regular butter like the hero he is!
Dinner was one salmon entree, one haddock entree and one fried Stonington (local) scallops. He also revealed you can get them broiled (Chef White, you may want to mention that ON the menu...but thanks Mason, good work!).
I have to say, 2 of the 3 didn't want to come here due to past bad experiences, but we deferred to #3 who REALLY wanted seafood and to try it. Fine. I was pleasantly surprised. The calamari were good, hot, fresh... basic, I guess, not outstanding and the red sauce that came with it was lackluster. It would be better as a chunky marinara, but it is a blended ??? um... sad to say reminded me of the taste of Chef Boyardee canned spaghetti. Hé calamari was improved by a squeeze of lemon instead. DO NOT tell Mason I used the "dirty restaurant lemon".
The corn bread is very light and can go sweet, it's almost a dessert. Entrees don't come with salad or bread, fyi.
My fried scallops were fresh and good, not WOW. They are New England basic. They came with super thinly sliced coleslaw, pretty dry with barely any dressing that tasted like nothing. However, the bigger disappointment was the fries. I get it. You serve a lot of people all at once sometimes and you can't make your own homemade fries from real potatoes on site. BUT... you can at least buy a QUALITY French fried potato product from your food vendor. These were cooked properly, but they still sucked. Not the kitchen's fault. I paid Market Price. FYI: don't expect large scallops. SEA scallops are he very large one. STONINGTON Scallops are local and are medium size, but very fresh and tasty. (But honestly, this trip, the best I had were at Mr. G's, a pizza place in New London at half the price! Sorry, Summer Shack. And the fries were outstanding!)
SIDEBAR: The table next to us had 2 parents and 2 kids. You DO NO have chicken tenders or nuggets for these young people. Their server directed them to possibly order a FOUR PIECE FRIED Chicken on the BONE dinner ($20) for 2 little kids. SERIOUSLY? You are not new to the restaurant business. You obviously already buy one premade frozen product. Buy some damn quality chicken tenders for the kiddos.
Their parents opted to just order a side of fries for them, and guess what? All FOUR of them thought the fries SUCKED, too! (Jasper White and Management Team: ARE YOU LISTENING?). Here are people who won't be back with or without the kids or others.
Back to the food: #3 loved the Salmon and refused to even give anyone a bite. I begrudgingly got to sample the mashed potatoes, which were lovely. #2 loved the haddock and luckily the sauce helped the very basic white rice and BLAND steamed broccoli that accompanied it.
Obviously, the emphasis here is on the super fresh fish and that's great, but why not make the sides match the quality?
In the end, my bill was $151.36 for 3 entrees, one app, a bread and one beer. I'm a great tipper, so would I spend that much on a MEH dinner with no leftovers again? Probably not. It's a 3 star meal with a 5 star server, so it's a 4.
The place is designed to look like a shack. And I had to explain to #3, that although it feels like a casual restaurant, the prices reflect the location and supposedly the food. If you want the real New England seafood shack experience with the best food and a coastal vibe, leave the reservation and go to Captain Scott's Lobster Dock in New London, CT. Smell the sea air, see the boats, get the real vibe.
But if you're stuck at the casino and eat here, choose wisely, ask for Mason and skip the lemons! read more
