"Coffee is a language in itself." -- Jackie Chan Such true words spoken by one of my favorite movie personalities! I love trying different coffeeshops while I am on a road trip. I believe local coffeeshops can give you many good hints about the community that surrounds it! For example, cozy interior and free Wi-Fi serving delicious coffee and espresso drinks may tell you that a community is either made up of professionals who work remotely or students who go to a school nearby. In the same setting, couches setup facing each other may tell you that this is a tightly neat community that enjoys a good conversation over a good cup of coffee. So every time I pass through a town, I try to stop for a cup of coffee and spend a little time at the local coffeeshop. In my last trip, passing through Bakersfield, I decided to look for a new coffeeshop that I have not tried yet and decided on Summit Coffee. The coffeeshop is across the street from the Canyon Hills Assembly of God church. It is located in a big building (bigger than I am used to seeing local coffeeshops) and has a nice outside seating area. They offer a variety of pastries and more importantly coffee drinks at very reasonable prices. I had me a latte and enjoyed it. The coffee tasted very good and the latte was done the right way. The young lady who served as the barista was very nice and polite. I also noticed a couple of gentlemen sitting there and working on their laptops. Apparently the Café offers free Wi-Fi as well. Altogether a very good place to sit and enjoy a good cup of coffee.

Top notch coffee. The service was friendly and extremely fast. I was able to sit and enjoy the view from the beautiful patio setup they have. Had a blueberry muffin with an iced Vanilla Latte.

The location is great, if not perfect! It's a beautiful place both inside and out! Perfect to work or study (wifi available although few outlets) or just sit around and take in the fresh air and warm sun :) their iced vanilla latte was very good (and huge serving) and their chocolate chip scone a delicious treat!! Was not a busy day this morning service was quick and easy :) definitely will return!

Very nice local coffee shop. Friendly staff and welcoming atmosphere. The scones are delicious and tasted fresh. I loved my iced Americano and came back later to try the cold brew, also a hit. Kids loved the fresh iced tea. The two staff that took my orders where very nice and friendly. We will be back.

Summit Coffee is attached to the church. The staff was friendly, Fox News was on, bibles were throughout the shop. The coffee was good, along the lines of most other small coffee shops.

This coffee was one of the best

If you want to try out a coffee that is stronger than a coffee chain this coffee is it! The area is very nice and quiet. The cafe is big, clean and fresh. The coffee? AMAZING! Best coffee in town! Will be back!

The second was almond butter and banana with cocoa nibs, honey, and cinnamon. The third was Nutella and hazelnuts topped with strawberries and coconut flakes. They were all delicious, but my favorite was definitely the Nutella and hazelnut toast. Everything tasted fresh and flavorful, and the variety made it fun to share and try different combinations. Service was quick and friendly. The ambiance is a cute cafe vibe. You place order at the counter and someone brings your order to your table. Smitten is definitely a must-visit spot when downtown for breakfast.

SMITTENS STAPLE IS THEIR ABILITY TO MISS THE FLAVOR IN EVER SINGLE DISH…read more Update: coming back after some palate development... smitten is one of the most tasteless restaurants in town. Their hype was definitely due to the 'aesthetic'. Nothing is really outstanding to me. The drinks are such a let down, the coffee is borderline yuck.. do not recommend. Everything is quite unmemorable. Service is whatever, sometimes mid, sometimes bad. Nothing outstanding. Ambiance.... well... this one has been replicated one too many times. The food is heavily missing flavor, the hummus is disgusting. I can't believe they call that thing hummus, it's an insult to actual dish.. it's almost like it was trying to imitate the real dish, but failed terribly in even attempting to. Their pizza tasted like play-doh and looked very pale. Smitten is at least consistent with one thing, which is their staple: no flavor. One of the breaking points for me was being served food that had someone's HAIR. The restaurant is very expensive for the poor experience they have to offer. I stopped recommending them a long time ago.

Coffee shop is small and furniture looks very used, aesthetically not very appealing but I'm here for coffee, right? Several signature drink options and quite a few sugar-free options as well. I was undecided between the lavender latte and the Mexican mocha. Barista told me the Mexican mocha was her favorite, so I went with that. The coffee was extremely hot but honestly, nothing spectacular. It's was extremely basic and know I can make this at home. They used a powder mix but nothing to make it their own, just right out of can..so disappointing. They did have several baked good options. I probably wouldn't come back here. No restrooms are available for customers.

My wife's cold brew, though... was rough. Like really rough. Hard to finish. Food was also hit or miss. The blueberry empanada was absolute perfection -- a delicious, non-sweet pastry with a bright blueberry filling that worked beautifully together. Easily the highlight. On the other hand, the butter English scone thingy was honestly inedible. Overall: some real standouts and some big misses. A mixed experience, but that blueberry empanada alone almost makes it worth another try.

Tuesday, March 10th, we traveled to Bakersfield to pick up a vehicle I had purchased, and of course had to stop by Kohnen's. My wife and I split a Tuna and Cheddar Panini, and a loaded Turkey (we arrived too late for Sourdough!!). It is difficult to walk away without a mini-pie (try them all, but blackberry is freaking amazing!!). As always, Danelle was there with her typical congeniality and work ethic! We love her!! And I got to tell her about her doppelgänger in a restaurant in Yucaipa!! They do exist!! In summary, eat at Kohnen's!! Say hi to Danelle!

I visited Kohnen's Bakery Tehachapi yesterday with my family, and this was honestly one of the…read moreworst customer service experiences I've ever had. I only purchased two items -- one cream puff and one slice of cheesecake -- but the cashier charged my card THREE times due to repeated mistakes. Here's exactly what happened: 1) My first card (Card A) was charged $11.20. The cashier asked me if I wanted a receipt, and I said yes. Then she told me the receipt didn't come out because the transaction "didn't go through," and asked me to provide my card again. 2) I gave the same card again, and this time she charged $11.69. 3) Then again, she told me that it didn't go through, so I used a different debit card (Card B), which was charged $11.20. While sitting at the table with my family, I immediately checked my bank account and thought I had only been charged twice. I spoke to a staff member at the store and requested a refund for one of the $11.20 charges, which was processed. However, today I realized I had actually been charged three times, meaning there was still another $11.20 that needed to be refunded. So I called the bakery and asked to speak with a manager. I spoke with someone named Danielle. I calmly explained the entire situation and told her I would send all my receipts and bank transaction records by email so they could double-check and confirm everything. She said ok and gave me their email address, but it was very long, and I was concerned about making a mistake while writing it down. So I politely asked if she could text me the email address instead. Her response was extremely rude -- she said, "I'm not required to do that," and told me to just write it down myself if I had a pen and paper. Although I was already uncomfortable with her attitude, I carefully wrote it down and sent the email. However, the email bounced back as invalid, even though I had confirmed the spelling with her multiple times over the phone. When I called again, Danielle answered and said, "Ma'am," in a very dismissive tone, and told me that they had found the three charges and had already processed refunds for both $11.20 transactions. I tried to confirm which card the refund was going to, since I used two different cards, but after putting me on hold for a long time, she read off a card number that was not mine. When I told her that wasn't my card, she insisted those were the only transactions for $11.20 yesterday and told me to "check my bank in a few days" and call back if the refund doesn't show up. And, she didn't apologize for the mistake, even though they charged my cards three times and wasted a significant amount of my time. Even yesterday, when I asked for an apology, I only received one reluctantly after I pointed out that they had made a mistake -- and even then, the response was dismissive, as if I should just accept it because they were "taking care of it." The attitude throughout this entire situation was rude, unprofessional, and extremely frustrating. The cheesecake was very good. But because of this experience, I would never come back. We drove all the way from Los Angeles to Tehachapi with my family, expecting a pleasant visit, but this bakery completely ruined the day. Being charged a total of $34.09 for just two small items due to repeated errors is unacceptable. If your staff cannot properly process payments, they should not be working as cashiers. Situations like this should never happen. What's even worse is that after making multiple mistakes, there was not a single sincere apology -- only attitude, dismissiveness, and instructions for me to keep checking my bank and call back again. My time is valuable. This entire situation could have been avoided if things were handled properly from the beginning. This was an extremely unpleasant experience, and I am very disappointed. Cf) For reference, the other $16.05 receipt is for bread that my brother purchased.
