This was the quintessential diner experience: it's adorable, everyone is super friendly, and the food is hot and cheap. We understand that the Scrapyard is their #1 menu item, so we ordered that. We had to ask what "scrapple" was - and after eating it I'm still not sure. We also had the mushroom swiss burger, and got a short stack of pancakes for our toddler. Our meals were fine; but not spectacular. The standout item was definitely the pancakes; and we were so glad our little one kept sharing! It was a perfectly-cooked, not too sweet pancake; and they told us the batter was made to order. It was served with real maple syrup. Yum! We couldn't help but order a slice of the gorgeous looking lemon meringue, which did not disappoint. We would have ordered a full pie if they had enough to give us. We chatted with the staff throughout our meal and afterward, and had such a fun time that we got a mug and t-shirt. It was the perfect waypoint on our road trip; and we'd definitely go back. A downside to being a small diner is that they have a tiny bathroom with no baby changing station. Since they're right off the turnpike, I'm sure that's been a problem for more than just me; but they graciously offered me a quiet booth in the back to change my newborn in. read more

We stopped by for lunch on our way back to DC from Pittsburgh. We didn't want to eat in Breezewood, and as we approached the Somerset exit, we used Yelp to find this diner. It was a great choice! It's very close to the turnpike, so you don't have to drive too far. The parking lot was fairly crowded around 1pm on a Tuesday, but we still managed to find a spot and grab one of the only two tables available at the time. We were immediately greeted and waters were brought out soon after. It took about 10 minutes for our server to come over, but she took our order immediately and brought out my fiance's coffee too. Not long after ordering, our food arrived. I ordered the turkey reuben which was served as a standalone sandwich for $4.99. You can add fries for $1.99 or two sides for $2.49. The sandwich was quite large so I was glad I did not order anything else. The reuben was delicious! The turkey was fresh and hand-carved, the swiss was gooey and melted, the sauerkraut was not overwhelming, the amount of 1000 island was perfect, and the rye was toasted crunchy! It was served piping hot; so much so that I nearly burned my mouth on that first bite! My fiance ordered the breakfast special, also $4.99. Two eggs (he went with scrambled), 3 slices of bacon (other choices available), homefries, and toast (white or wheat). He enjoyed it and said it was a nice breakfast sampler. His coffee was regularly filled and our check was brought quickly. Our bill came to-and get this!!!-$12.59!!! We were far too stuffed for dessert but they looked amazing in the display case and all were homemade. All you could want in a diner. Cheap, fast & delicious. Got the Gober burger which had a patty a bit smaller than I expected but it filled me right up and was very yummy. They have sweet potato fries! A little bit of big city luxury in the countryside. Cherry Pie was solid though now I am wishing I had gotten the chocolate peanut butter. I walked in to the crowded restaurant with lots of people not wearing masks. I was ignored by every worker. All I wanted was a menu to look at to place a to go order. It's a perfect diner atmosphere, being a stainless steel diner cart. And if we had gone for lunch or dinner, it probably would have been a five of five. But we stopped there on a Sunday for breakfast on our way to Lancaster for the weekend. And they didn't have fruit, which upset my wife. And they only had white or wheat bread, which annoyed me. I ordered a build your own omelette with Swiss, mushrooms and ham. The omelet was huge and the ham was really good, not lunch meat. My wife got poached well, which came out just right, and a side salad (since they didn't have fruit). She also got wheat toast, which was actually bland and dry and not even worth ordering really. If they would have had fruit and more bread options, it probably would have been a 5/5 due to the awesome diner atmosphere. read more

We stopped at the Somerset Diner for dinner during a long cross-country haul. The food was okay, and the service was excellent. Somerset Diner has a reasonable menu. Of course, they serve breakfast all day. Jane had one of the breakfast platters and enjoyed it. She had an ample serving. I had the meatloaf, which comes with two sides. I ordered extra mashed potatoes. The meatloaf was kind of blah, and the gravy was okay. The cole slaw was excellent, but the potatoes seemed like they came from a box. The kids had a hamburger and Kraft Mac & Cheese (the mac & cheese is represented as Kraft Mac & Cheese on the menu, so no surprises there). I tasted the burger--it was actually pretty good. In the end, the food was hit-or-miss. The building is built to look like a diner--lots of shiny stainless steel inside and out, plenty of booth seating and a lunch counter. Everything was immaculately clean. Since it was relatively late at night ((I don't remember exactly what time, say 8 or 9) during the holiday week, the diner was pretty empty. We sat down right away, and the server was attentive, although he did not know what one of the menu items (scrapple) was. Overall, Somerset Diner is not a destination restaurant. It was fine late at night when we were hungry and tired from travelling. Next time we stop in Somerset, we will try something else. read more

My family and I stopped at Summit Diner this past weekend to avoid more PA Turnpike food. We opted for a diner, because diner service is usually very quick, and we had two hungry children, ages 2 and 5. The diner is right off the Turnpike, it seemed clean, the staff was friendly, and prices were great, but the service was very slow. It took close to 30 minutes to get our food, which was just standard lunch fare (and the diner was in no way crowded). The food was good, diner quality food, but the bacon and french fries really stood out as being excellent. I highly recommend anything with bacon involved. Also note that scrapple is on the menu, which I think is a plus, because that's nearly impossible to find in Western PA. Two stars for service, four for food quality. I have to go neutral on the kid-friendliness, based on the wait and no crayons/coloring place mats, but they did have high chairs, kid-sized cups with lids and the noise level is kid friendly. read more

We have been to this location on four different occassions; overall the service is crazy unorganized for takeout and sitdown service. The food will do in a pinch, yet it really is not glowing. We had to wait until they ushered about 3 to 4 different parties to their tables and cash out 1 older couple until we could even place an order. Sigh. The staffers serve double duty as wait staff and cashier; they seemed overworked and exhausted. A lot of the dishes and veggies are smoothed in sauces or butter (double yuck), however they can tailor your request and remove that which is nice. The desserts are overwhelmingly huge, yet are just OK. The hot sandwich that we ordered was barely hot for the time that we waited. That is a shame for our long road trip. So-so diner. read more

I grew up in Somerset County.. I've seen the transformation of the summit diner. It WAS my favorite place to eat and hang out at, when I was in high school and I longed to come home from college to come back and have their awesome homemade pancakes and pies.. YUMMM.. HOWEVER, the person who bought it and gutted it, then remodeled it.. RUINED it. I cried when I came back to find the old jukeboxes taken out and replaced with flat screen tvs and the nostalgic decor replaced with black pho-leather and flimsy aluminum blinds. The food was typical diner food. It was tasty, greasy and good. The pancakes that I loved are gone, they are no longer melt in your mouth tasty.. RIP Summit. read more

We were attracted to the neat and tradional appearance of the diner. Inside appearance was consistent with the outside, a very attractive, traditional diner. The service was fast and friendly. Portions were generous. My omelette was a bit dry and also a bit salty for my taste, but otherwise good. My wife enjoyed her eggs and sausage patties. Rolled in to the motel next door late at night. Looked out our room's back window and saw this diner shining in the distance like it was the Ark of the Covenant. What a tasty breakfast the next morning! This place was so cool and the omelettes were so tasty that we were telling people about it days and 100s of miles afterwards. Really delicious breakfast. It was busy so we sat at the counter. Coffee was good and the service was excellent. I ordered the sausage gravy biscuits, I would have liked more sausage (or maybe sage?) but the gravy was good and it wasn't greasy at all (a big plus). Husband ordered the steak and eggs and everything was just right, eggs were over easy without being runny, hash browns were perfectly golden without being overcooked. He said it was the best breakfast he's ever had. I should take offense at that because I cook a lot of breakfasts, but I had a taste and it was delicious. We also split the small French toast. Two slices, the perfect breakfast dessert. It was soft but that's the way I like it. Nice place, good food, very reasonable prices. HOWEVER, don't sit anywhere near a speaker. Our experience started out nicely, but once someone started playing the jukebox, it was impossible to have a normal level conversation - we had to raise our voices significantly and use sign language. The waitress said the volume was set and couldn't be adjusted. The loud thumpa-thumpa of todays music really detracted what could have been a really nice experience. If you go and don't like loud music while you're eating, don't sit anywhere near the speakers about 6' off the floor against the wall. Otherwise very good. read more

My club sandwich was fresh and tasty and the cup of beef vegetable soup was killer. Classic PA diner with everything you'd expect - slabs of stainless covering the outside; friendly waitresses, a jukebox, and a case full of mile-high pies inside. Breakfast, burgers, meatloaf, and milkshakes on the menu. I went with a Good Morning burger, topped with bacon and an over-easy egg. You can get just the burger for less than $5, or around $8 with fries and coleslaw on the side. Greatest burger ever? No, but for the price, it was pretty darn good. The fries are fresh-cut as well, which is a plus. Service was friendly, though the place wasn't very busy on the Wednesday evening we were there. Definitely a locals/regulars type of hangout for sure. Four of us ate for around $40 + tip, which is hard to beat. Worth a try if you're in the area. read more

We stopped at this gem passing through on our way to DC. It caught our eye as a traditional looking, classic diner and was just as expected inside with booths, chrome and a bar with stools. Everything my family had was good to very good but the homemade chicken rice soup and fries were fantastic. Portions are huge for a pretty modest price so we didn't have room for dessert but the shakes, pies and gob cake looked great! The creator of scrapple might want to reconsider a few things-- 1) appearance. 2) consistency. 3) taste. Well, I wasn't going to bitch out of eating like the locals do, so I covered my scrapple in maple syrup and made the best of it. Like many, I stopped by this place late night in the midst of a road trip. My meal itself was good, although the jalapeño burger was a little small. Then again, it only cost around five dollars, so I wasn't expecting a huge portion. My sister's salad (something with apples in it) was really good, not to mention huge.
