As Far as small town diners go, this deserves 5 stars. Homemade soup and blackberry pie made with berries from a local Farm. Listen to the locals chat with each other. We just happened to notice the diner after we jumped off the turnpike to grab a bite to eat - our main goal, not to eat service plaza food. As soon as we entered, we were told to grab an open table....we found one that was free of dirty plates. We sat down and were excited to order - I especially couldn't wait to try a slice of pie. We waited for 10 min....no server. I noticed another couple had been waiting just as long...actually longer and had also not been greeted/placed a drink order. My husband pointed out that the server was helping a lady, who couldn't decide, buy a slice of pie. After about 20 min, we left. Not that anyone working there noticed the lost business. We were traveling with our infant daughter and the wait just wasn't worth it - we were already on borrowed time. Disappointing - we were excited to try something new. However....lesson learned. Stick to the service plazas or big name restaurants while traveling and in a time pinch. The food may be disappointing but someone is sure to serve you in a timely manner. read more

We were excited to try it after reading reviews from other yelpers. Love to support local restaurants but unfortunately, we thought it was just okay. Atmosphere is typical cute diner with very friendly wait staff. Our food is the the part that was disappointing. The home fries and roast beef were highly recommended... The roast beef was stringy and tough and the home fries had potential but needed to be seasoned a little more. The food network will be featuring their gob cake so we really wanted to try it.... Extremely disappointed, all 6 of us tried it and no one liked it at all... and we are sweet lovers. It was dry, tasted like the refrigerator... No one finished it, couldn't. Hamburgers were good, fries were fresh cut which is always good. The lemon meringue pie tasted fake, if that's possible, we couldn't finish that either. HORRABLE, GOT THE BREAKFAST SPECIAL AND THE sausage tasted like worn out shoe leather. waited (once we got in) almost an hour and a quarter. Waitress was rude (Believe she was the owner) would seem that would be the only person to get away with it without being fired. Way too long a wait between when the drink order was placed then served and when the menu order was placed then served. I love the Summit Diner! My friends and I used to go there after school and get french fries with gravy. They are still just as good as they were then. Yesterday my husband and I went there for lunch. I had a Reuben sandwich and he had breakfast. Everything was really good. Our waitress was super nice and efficient and they were so busy but everyone was working really hard. This is a must try for out of town out-of-towners, it is a really good local place to eat. read more

My wife's family owned a diner in greensburg back in the 80's were she worked and ate and I have to say that this place reminds me of home. Someone put a lot of love and care into making this place retro yet not run down. It's an adorable fifties diner with a pleasant staff. The syrup in the pancakes was great. They even sell it. I was stuffed after a short stack with two eggs. The coffee was nothing fancy, but I was at a diner and was expecting diner coffee anyway. They kept offering refills and I kept accepting. read more

I loved the Summit Dinner. 6 bucks for liver and onions, home made pie, good soup. On the PA Turnpike it was always my destination stop, until last November. I eagerly pulled up but to my consternation there was a huuuge "Make America Great " banner across their front. Well, they can believe what they want and they can be as political as they want, but I got a really bad taste in my mouth from being there...and it lingers on. There are equally good pie joints all over, especially along The Lincoln Highway and they aren't making me have to make political decisions about how to spend my money. Too bad, so long. read more

Started with the fried green beans, which were great, and I don't usually eat fried food. I had the turkey ruben. Very good. Real sliced turkey, not processed stuff. Summit Diner.. is a gem. A family owned diner. It has great home cook meals and extremely reasonable prices. Our meal consisted of: home made meat loaf with real mash potatoes, dinner roll and a salad. I had a big salad. A bed of lettuce..which had tricolored pasta, chicken, hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. Drinks were hot tea and soda. The bill was $20.26 w/tax. Were can you get great home cooked meals at that price! The only thing we were disappointed in was that we could not try one of their various high-piled pies for $2.49 a slice. First time I have ever been here, it looked really cool and retro from the outside. Inside is the same oldies theme, and very clean. Service was great and the prices are very reasonable. Excellent "diner" food. Had breakfast at 3:00 pm. Great coffee, great eggs, great home fries, just great. And fast, very friendly service. On long trip home planning to go to Cracker Barrel which was too crowded. We are so glad they were, because we found this diner that will be a permanent stop on this trip from now on. I had posted a review in March and came back to read other reviews since getting back to Florida. My mistake, that I didn't complete the Yelp form by assigning the correct number of stars and my review didn't make the positive review list..... So sorry. Will be back later this year. My wife and I were passing through Somerset on the Turnpike on our way back to Florida. We got to the Summit Diner shortly after lunch and was surprised to see that there was still a good number of patrons still enjoying their meals. The person that greeted us was very friendly and pleasant. We were shown to our table and greeted by a older lady who was our waitress. Although she was busy, she took the time to ask where we were from and where we were headed and she did have a great sense of humor. The vegetable soup was the best we have had for some time. My wife had a turkey club sandwich and I had a Jakeanator hamburger with the jalapino's. The portions were more than ample and the meal came to us in a very shot time. I did make comment to the waitress that the turnaround time for the meal was astounding. We finished off the meal with some coconut cream pie that was simply delicious. We hope to be traveling back through this area later in the year and will make it a point to stop here again. We believe that if a business does a good job, they should be commended. We were in town for a wedding on Friday and drove by this spot on the way to the venue. All four of us decided that this was where we were going to get breakfast before we headed back to Pittsburgh the next day. It was pretty busy (obviously; Saturday mornings are very busy especially for a cool diner like this one) and there were two other parties waiting in front of us to be seated. I did not see one smile on any of the waitresses faces and received very unfriendly glances from everybody working there (I'm not exaggerating - EVERYBODY working looked absolutely miserable). I mean, it was clearly packed and busy but really? Nobody could at least smile or say hello? Nobody greeted us or let us know how long the wait was and the only time ANYONE said anything to us was to tell us to close the door because the air was on. After that was said, one of the parties in front of us left either because the wait was too long or they were catching the unfriendly vibes from everybody working there as well. Either way, this meant we were one step closer to getting the awesome breakfast we had been anticipating from the night before. We waited about 10-15 minutes and some space at the counter finally cleared out. Four seats - it was as if they knew we were coming. We waited for somebody to clear the empty plates and waited to see if the party in front of us wanted to take the counter. Neither of those two things happened, and still nobody has said a word to us so we decided to just sit down. At this point, a woman by the name of Judy slapped her pad onto the counter (as if upset that we seat ourselves) and told us it would be a minute before she could even get to us to clear the plates. Judy was clearly flustered and in a terrible mood - just like everybody else working there. After our cheerful greeting, I glanced over to my friend and told him I had a bad feeling about having breakfast here. Not even 5 minutes later, another waitress approaches Judy to tell her that one of her guests was getting upset over how long she was taking with their check. She rolls her eyes, let's out an angry sigh and walks over to the other end of the counter where her guests were. I couldn't make out the entire conversation, but the guest was upset over the waitress "taking an hour" to give them the check. And instead of apologizing, Judy keeps saying very loudly, "YOU KNOW WHAT?! YOU KNOW WHAT?!" while pulling things out of her apron and slamming them onto the counter until finally finding the check they had been waiting for. I was shocked. I've worked in the restaurant industry for a few brief summers in college and if I learned anything from that experience (or even learned from working with the public in general), REGARDLESS if they are wrong, you NEVER treat your guests that way. After that, we decided to leave. We had already spent over a half hour waiting to sit down and waiting to be acknowledged, we weren't in the mood to be treated as if we were a burden like the other customers. I would like to say that I'm pretty fair when it comes to my Yelp reviews; I never give a poor rating unless it's truly deserved. And in my opinion, this place deserves my one star. We didn't even get to eat here! They made us feel SO unwelcome. I hope the next group of people who have to decide between the free hotel breakfast and the "cool looking" diner chooses accordingly because we missed out on eating breakfast all together after that. read more

I am originally from Somerset PA and have grown up around this place under various managers. It has never been good, up to as recently as today when my mother convinced me to give it another shot after several years away. When I went in and asked for a booth, one of the servers rudely snapped, you're gonna have to wait. After they cleaned off the table and were seated, I ordered a shake but told her to bring it out whenever she had a chance (I waitressed for several years and know shakes are a huge time suck), to which she replied, yeah, that's gonna be a while, and stormed off. I ordered fries which were decent, but one in my party ordered the SOS and chocolate milk and after a bit was so sickened she actually threw up. Another also ordered the chocolate milk and became queasy so I'm wondering if it wasn't the milk that made them ill. There is nothing special about this place unless you want mediocre food served by surly waitresses who seem to think their patrons are huge inconveniences. I am still astonished at the complete lack of customer service. Some things never change, I guess! read more

I was just there today. Table D-5. Friday, July 26, 2013. It was a bad experience. As we walked into the restaurant, a waitress whisked at us and said, "Seat yourself." Nice. No touchy feely. No little town love. Worse than the town that I work in, Philadelphia. We sat down to the same fly's that we saw last year. Fly's!! Then we ordered. My wife specifically asked - make the eggs well down. Not runny. Guess what, runny as heck. Not well done. The waitress came to our table with 6 glasses in her hand. She proceeded to spill the orange juice on the table. Guess what? The waitress walked away from the table and did not clean up the mess. My wife did. Waitress just ignored us. Like we were bothering her. Terrible. Oh - good pancakes but imitation maple syrup. The waitress said so. Lastly, the cashier never once looked up at me while accepting the check. Head down. No eye contact. Bad place. I will never go again. read more
