I'm not an African so I'm not sure what it should taste like exactly. But if it's that I don't want it. The food was extremely greasy and I mean everything. The chicken tasted pungent like it was part goat. Not to mention dry and no flavor. The service was decent. I didn't like the smell of the restaurant but I am always willing to give things a try. OK, so because my car was in the shop, my boyfriend and I decided to take a walk last night to get some food. I suggested this location, as I am an African woman and I love African food. We arrived at 8 PM, they close at 9 PM. Is was a cute little spot on Atlantic with greens and yellows coloring around. The service was not what I expected at all. I ordered the Fufu/Egusi combo; I had more to add, but the host, a young African woman taking my order walked away to the kitchen, so I stood there waiting to tell her what else I wanted. I haven't even paid yet, why would she leave? She began fixing plates in front of us, but it was not our food. It was actually her own to take home. (She was chuckling about it with an employee) The customer should always come first, which was the first sign of bad service. She came back about six minutes later, and I told her I wanted to add Chinchin, and plantains. She cut her eyes at me with attitude, like it was too much and walked away and then shortly turn around and says "anything else???" with attitude. My boyfriend looked at me and said what's her problem? I shrugged my shoulders. We waited an extra eight minutes for them to get the plantains ready. She returned and placed my items in a bag, and I said thank you, which was followed by NO RESPONSE. My boyfriend and I are very displeased with that type of attitude and service. When I got home, I was even more disappointed to see the plantain I ordered and waited on was not ripe and and was overcooked. It was very hard and rubbery. The Egusi and fufu was pretty good flavor, BUT my chicken inside of it was overcooked and dry. (I probably would've asked for spicy Egusi if I had the option.) As an African American woman (Sierra Leonian), I always want to support businesses of color, especially African business, but I get let down half the time. In California, most cultural food companies are Hispanic and Asian cultured, so for this African restaurant to come and try to make a name for themselves and try to GAIN customers, you're doing a bad job. Was very excited to try this place. Fufu was exactly what I expected. Plantains were just okay. But tasted better after airfreight it some more and dipping it with brown sugar I had at home. What we ordered: * The egusi soup w/ chicken ($18.99) - A soup made of the large seeds of an African melon (egusi) and meat that has a nutty, earthy flavor * Fufu (included) - a dough-like food with a neutral, starchy taste * Jollof Rice w/ chicken ($18.99) - a long-grain rice dish made with tomatoes, onions, spices, vegetables, and meat PROS: * Portion sizes are massive. I'm incredibly surprised and blown away that we finally have a authentic Nigerian restaurant here in Long Beach. I ordered several items from the menu to give this place a fair review. 1st is the Rice meal combo with Jollof rice mix meat/beef. I rate this a 3/5 stars. The Jollof rice tasted like it came from a burnt pot/pan so the whole plate of rice wasn't good. The beef was a little over fried but not past the point of no return. The tripe was deliciously seasoned and cooked well. 2nd is the Ofada Rice + Hot Sauce THIS WAS THE ABSOLUTE STAR OF THE SHOW! Perfectly cooked and seasoned with a spicy aftertaste. Eat this with white rice or with fufu and you got yourself the perfect dish! 5/5 stars 3rd was the Fufu/Soup Combo with the Egusi Soup and Mixed Meat/Beef. The fufu was delicious! It was nice and springy while not being overly starchy. To be honest, I am not a fan of Egusi soup so it's always going to be a pass for me but it taste better than some I've had in the past. Where do I start with this place? First impression, walking in to this place I should have just walked out when I seen this was a fast food style place. But I was optimistic . I ordered the spinach and chicken stew ... once they started warming up the food, the entire place began to smell like dirty putang and feet. I didn't equate the smell came from my spinach and chicken stew but later when I get home I realized it was in fact my food causing that pungent smell. The chicken was old, spinach probably spoiled as well. Fufu was disgusting. I've had some amazing experiences with African cuisine but this one was by far the worse. I ended up just getting tacos because the food was just THAT smelly and disgusting. My friend ended up having food poisoning after eating his food from here. The 1 person who was friendly and acknowledged us was the best part of our visit. That was the cashier. The rest of the people were rude. Before my arrival I had placed an order online for oxtails around $22.00 and Egusi with fish this came to a total of 49.50. Once after I then received a text message for my confirmation and pick up time. Upon arrival there was a parking lot available which is always great, parked the car and walked inside. The vibes were alright I was greeted, but with a face of I cant wait till this day is over. I then told the young lady that I had placed an order on the app. At this time a man walked over with my order with two very small containers. My response to the bag was is this it? The guy responded yea with an attitude. so then I took my bag and walked to the car. Something just was not right so I then decided to check the bag before I left the lot. Containe one which was foam carried the fufu and the other container (plastic) had the egusi and both were secure another good thing. Now Im upset because Im missing my oxtails so I then walk back into the restaurant to inform them of my missing food. While talking I had just happened to take a glance of the meat that was under the heat lamp, seems like all day. Well the same unhappy chick told me I did not order oxtails, but it was smack dead on my order ticket and I showed her. Then with the dumb look on her face and still unapologetic she tells me that they don't have oxtails and with aggression in her voice she stated what do you want me to do? Well the first thing she could have done was apologized to me about the situation, but nope that did not happen. So I then told her well just give me something equaling the value of the oxtails. Her response with and attitude was: Well what do you want? I told her the turkey with some sort of veggies. So she did give me what I wanted and then I asked her how much was this worth? She stated $19 and some change. So I then said well can I have some of the sauce over there? she was like that's $25.00 So I was like well you still owe me change just give me a lil cup. When I tell you she was penny pinching this was straight ridiculous and she was still upset. I asked her why was she mad because technically their intent was to hope that I drove all the way home and forget that I ordered oxtails and maybe treat me like crap over the phone and tell me that they don't sell them. Who knows what the outcome would have been, but I'm so happy that I had decided to look inside that bag. 1. Customer service sucks 2. My turkey and whatever veggie that was it was very good, but too bad I'm never coming back. 3. My fufu and Egusi was way too greasy and too many bones. All I continued to chew on was dry white crumbles and fish with bones and grease. My trash can had a field day with that. Oh and that greasy 25 dollar sauce was not worth the hype. FOOD IS TERRIBLE. Their rice is hard (both jollof and white rice and the so called coconut rice with no hint of coconut smh) and the goat meat is very VERY TOUGH/hard (unable to chew, pure TRASH). All undercooked and I spent over $120 bucks. Goat meat has 90% fat obviously and unclean. 2 days old plantain. Flies everywhere on the food. How can you buy food and have to re-cook everything and trash more than 70% of the food. Waste of money and time Been a loyal customer and supportive but I have to always re-cook the food all the time. I have had it. Does the cook not know how to cook or taste the food. Service sucks. The staff was very kind and cordial, and my companion that day was a newcomer to the cuisine in general, so there was a slight learning curve. It has a very rustic and home-like feel to the inside and is easily a place where you don't feel rushed out after eating. We ended up being there for nearly 2 hours because the atmosphere was so nice. I got the Egusi soup with goat meat, and it was incredible. If you get Fufu, use your hands! African food is meant to be eaten with your hands if you're able to! Also had the fried plantains and those were wonderful. The bitter leaf soup I tried for the first time was incredibly tasty. They generously added a good amount of fish, making it even more flavorful. At a certain moment, I ended up purchasing $60 worth of food out of curiosity to explore new flavors. However, I have come to the realization that this establishment does not justify the price tag. It was disheartening to spend such a sum on the food I received, especially considering that the taste did not meet my expectations. I had paid $24 for a single dish, which wasn't too terrible, it was delicious but it taught me a valuable lesson. My god-daughter was in town, and really want to try some egusi and fufu. She's of the Gen Z generation, so Tik Tok videos are what really made her want to try the dish. We decided to share an order of egusi with the stewed chicken and fufu. My god daughter originally wanted to try it with goat, but there wasn't any goat available today. I had asked her if she liked it and if it's what she imagined it would taste like. She said she did like it and really enjoyed her hands-on experience. Personally, I've only had my first Nigerian food experience from Veronica's in Inglewood. I pretty much ordered the same thing, but also got to try the jollof rice and plantains from there. I feel like the stewed chicken may be better here because I felt like it was too over cooked and hard to eat from Veronica's. We decided to try Sumptuous since I live closer to here than Inglewood. I like that this spot has a buffet of choices, so you're not waiting for a really long time for your food. I have no words. This was the worst meal I've had in a long time. I was quite excited to eat some Nigerian food but this was bad.
