My quest for Seattle's best Chinese food continues. I thought I had a winner here, but I may never know. A growing trend since the pandemic is for smaller Chinese spots to convert to take out only. I get it, less staff, less overhead, you can focus on the food. All of these places are the same, tables get pushed out, the dining room is full of to go containers and bulk items like 50-pound bags of rice or 5 gallon buckets of soy sauce give you the impression Costco.com just made a delivery before you arrived. My example here is my best argument to do better. I don't live in this area, but was passing through, I read the reviews and everyone said this spot was a hidden gem. Problem is, if I don't live here, I have to eat in my car and the only way Chinese food is meant to eat in a vehicle, is maybe if you have a lunch plate. Everything in a single container, with a cup of soup on the side. That is only available during the week and I work downtown, so that will never be an option. So in an effort to see if the buzz was real, I had an appetizer. I chose my favorite which is Fried Wontons. Most restaurants don't do them, those that do, typically use cream cheese or crab, or sometimes BBQ Pork. No, a friend wonton should be exactly what it says, the same wonton found in the soup, just fried. Ironically, I read a review where someone said they were "Just Ok". Well, I can tell you, these were without question the best fried wontons this fanatic has ever had. Cooked perfectly, tasty, juicy wonton and a generous portion. Menu said 8 per order, I was too busy enjoying to count, but I would be willing to sign a document claiming that my order may have consisted of 10. My other argument is this, items that are deep friend, don't remain crisp to go, so items like mine, Almond Chicken, spring rolls, Orange Chicken start to steam in an enclosed container. It's the same reason I never get pizza delivered or to go. I like a hot pie with a crisp crust and you sacrifice that once it goes in a box. My exception to that rule is the fact that I have a pizza place ¼ mile from my house. I always order in person, tell them I need a crisp crust and grab it and run. I always eat a slice in my car to ensure I get that dine in experience, then zip home and immediately get the remaining pie on a plate. Anyway, I suspect the rumors are true and the reviews are accurate, based on my appetizer, they get 10/10, modified to 5/5 for the Yelp scale, but I have to remove a point for no dine in. The place isn't big to begin with, so they would be hard pressed to have more than 3, 4 seat tables anyway, but maybe they compromise, say they have limited seating and return two tables. They could also make itself service in the sense that you get your own water, tea and beverages, place your order at the counter and pick up plates at the counter also. I'll consult a map, if there is a park nearby, maybe I'll return in spring or summer when the weather improves and have an actual meal, but it hurts to come this close to greatness without being able to partake. read more

As a low budget college student, the fabled "lunch special" is one of the greatest inventions of the modern time. In my quest to find the greatest in Seattle, I stumbled upon the humble eatery of Sunflower Garden. While unassuming at first glance, this spot is whipping up Chinese American classics with remarkable execution. Not only were the salt and pepper pork chops some of the tastiest I've had in a while, but the whole meal was only $11. Came back with my family to try their other dishes and was pleasantly surprised at simply how good each dish was. It rivals many of the local strongholds down in Chinatown, even topping Tai Tung in my opinion. The staff are also extremely friendly and accommodating. If you're a fan of Chinese food, or just looking for good cheap eats, you gotta come here. read more

Long day, just spotted this new place and figured mmyeah why not? I'll give it a shot it's only a 5 min. drive from my apartment. So glad I tried them! I mean, it's always a gamble w/ Americanized 'Chinese Food' but hellz yes w/ Sunflower Garden - everything I ordered was tasty, fresh, and not overly greasy. When I got home the generous servings of food were still piping-hot after I popped open each takeout box. The menu offers just some standard takeout items(that's why I rated 4 stars) but regardless be sure and try out the pork buns and green onion pancakes! Sunflower Garden is a welcome addition to the Greenwood neighborhood for a super-quick lunch or dinner that won't break your wallet either. Great food at reasonable prices, and the people are really nice. Our favorites are the egg flower and won ton soups, garlic chicken wings, and salt and pepper pork chops. This is literally the best Chinese restaurant I've been to in Seattle for takeout and maybe just in general. First of all, the owners are the sweetest and nicest people. Second of all, just great food at a great price. My partner and I couldn't decide on what to order because everything looked so good, so we over ordered. No regrets at all. We got general tso's chicken, garlic green beans, scallion pancakes, beef chow fun, spicy wontons, and the braised pork over rice. The general tso's chicken and the beef chow fun were some hefty portions. My partner literally ate his chicken over three meals, and I had the beef chow fun over two meals. They were both so good! The chow fun was cooked so well, and the noodles had that perfect chew to them. The beef was super tender, and I didn't feel like it was too oily which is often a complaint I have with chow fun. I loved the spicy wontons especially since the wonton wrapper was so thin. Scallion pancakes were good but nothing special! They're $2 so why not get them? Garlic green beans were almost on par with Din Tai Fung's. Super garlicky and had a ton of flavor and again, huge portions. Lastly, the braised pork over rice (lu rou fan for all my Taiwanese people) was the taste of home I needed. I said I'd only take a bite and ended up eating the whole thing. Great spot. The good: Wontons Pork buns General tso Sesame chicken Meh: Broccoli and beef due to it being 90% broccoli. Flavor was good tho but needs more meat. The flavor of the general tso and sesame chicken is a little different than I'm used to but the chicken is soft and big. read more

J & B Garden is no longer in this space. No more roast or BBQ pork. No more salt & pepper tofu. HOWEVER, they do have salted pepper "pork chops" with garlic (pictured) and ma po tofu. Both of which I recommend. The "pork chops" are not that, but large pieces of pork covered (without the bone) in a crispy, peppery coating. The ma po tofu is not made in the strict Sichuan style (hot) but in a chef' variation which I liked a lot--milder with a slight, rich tomato flavor in there somewhere. read more

I'm always on a mission to find dry style chow fun, and Sunflower Garden delivers. Tofu chow fun is AMAZING. It's probably the best one I've ever had, and I've had a lot. It's wok hei heaven. $10.95 before tax. Food is consistent, which is important. I used to order the same dish when the restaurant was JB Garden, but the quality varied and it was often disappointing. Not so now. My SO and I have gotten it 3x each, and it's been amazing every time. The new owner and chef are super nice. The first time I ordered, they made the wrong item but immediately made the right one and gave me back a dollar since my dish was less expensive. They also gave me homemade candies, which were delicious. Their hot chili oil has garlic in it. It's bomb. Definitely recommend this place for some legit wok hei! read more

Tiny little place with only 2 tables. But some of the best simple Chinese I've had in a while. Huge chunks of Juicy chicken in the sweet and sour. No Fried batter in pink sauce here. The hakka style chow fun was super good. Dont let the dried shrimp scare you away. Its delicious. And the pork dumplings in spicy sauce are a must have. Fantastic!! There's not a lot of Chinese food options in the immediate vicinity. Thankfully, this newly opened spot is here to save the day. We ordered the onion pancake, potstickers, General Tso, and Broccoli and Beef. It was all very tasty - perfectly seasoned. The General Tso chicken had just the right amount of heat. Everything else was great. Prices are very competitive too. We're definitely going to become regulars here. Oh - and parking is a snap. The folks running the show were so nice. This is our go to Chinese take out restaurant during covid. I always order the hakka style chow fun with green onion pancakes. Both are very tasty. I love how crispy the pancakes are but they would need to be eaten right away or they will get hard. My husband usually orders the mapo tofu and fried red bean buns. The mapo tofu is not spicy and I prefer spicier. Red bean buns are good. I tend to stay away from the sweeter things on the menu. The BBQ buns are a bit too sweet for me. I appreciate the holes in the take out containers to ensure crispness of the fried food. read more

Such an incredible new Chinese place for north Seattle! Every dish we had was amazing. Mongolian beef with crispy rice noodles--perfect flavor. The sweet and sour pork was like nothing we've had before, and the pot stickers are clearly made from scratch on site, they taste soooo fresh. Best of all, the chef had just whipped up a bath of popcorn chicken with this amazing sweet/spicy seasoning, and threw in some of those for free. Very high quality food, made fresh, and incredibly reasonable prices. (Most entrees I saw are $9-12.) And the owners are exceptionally kind and professional. First time I tried coming here was the night before Christmas and they were busy. Totally understandable and glad they were getting busy. Came back last week and placed my order over the phone. The owner was very nice and told me my order would be ready in 20 mins. I got the bbq pork chow mein and the Mongolian beef. Both dishes were really good and I liked the balance of meat to vegetable ratio in the Mongolian beef. Other restaurants I notice lately do way more vegetables than meat but still have high prices. The prices are very reasonable and the quality is comparable to the restaurants in Chinatown. I recommend them! read more
