I Love Lucy and vintage music playing in the background along with the booth in the shape of a 1950s car smack in the middle of the diner set the stage. We sat at the bar at the Sunliner Diner and had great service! I got the shrimp eggs benedict, and although it had wonderful flavor, one of my poached eggs was quite overcooked. I also wish they had other options for hot sauce other than Tabasco, as I do not like it very much. If you're a fan of big, juicy burgers that barely fit in your mouth, I highly recommend Sunliner Diner. From the food to the jukebox to the retro uniforms, this place oozes pure 1950s authenticity. I absolutely loved how the entire staff helped with every table--not just their own. The girls behind the counter brought out our milkshakes (with that little extra in a separate cup!) served in chilled, vintage-style glasses, topped with whipped cream, sprinkles, and even part of a waffle. It's the little things that count. I got the avocado burger--no bacon--and it was huge, topped with a delicious crunchy pickle. My girlfriend ordered the vegetarian patty (which does come with a $5 upcharge). I'd love to see the place come out with a black beans burger for vegetarians not just a beyond burger. Still, I'm giving this place five stars--not just for the food, but for the overall experience. One of the biggest things that set it apart for me was seeing the owner walking around, checking in with guests. At one point, I even saw him take a mop from an employee and replace the head himself so the associate could focus on something else. Some people might say that's just part of the job--but to me, that kind of hands-on effort is rare in restaurants today. Yes, it's a little pricey--but you're not just paying for the meal. Things You Should Know About The Sunliner Diner: 1. I came in two nights in a row. Partially because of proximity, but also because you don't mess with success. And the Sunliner Diner is a success. 2. The staff is sweet, and kindly and efficiently handled the antics of many, many inebriated festival goers. Not us, of course. 3. I wasn't sad about a single thing I ate here, and I ate a lot. Waffles, onion rings, shakes, drinks, fried green tomatoes, fried shrimp, burgers... 4. Speaking of burgers, The Jukebox is a lot of things. Quite literally, it is a stack of three griddled burger patties, topped with American, Swiss, cheddar cheese, bacon, fried green tomato, onion ring, fried egg, and fried pickles. Drizzled with creole hollandaise on a buttered brioche bun. It is tall. It is excessive. It is also the burger of my dreams, as well as the burger of my nightmares. It is probably a principal reason that some folks in Alabama look the way they do. It is undoubtedly a contributing factor in the heart attack I will someday have. It is a source of pride in my own restraint, as I did not finish it (the first time I haven't finished my food in years). It is simultaneously a source of shame that I did not finish it, especially since I re-read the menu just now and discovered that if I did finish the last couple bites, I would've received a "Sunliner Surprise." I forget what I was talking about, but just know this: I will come back to the Sunliner Diner. I will eat The Jukebox again, and I will finish it. I have been coming here for years and always make it a point to return when I'm in town! They were super busy but we got in and out pretty quickly. Our server, Sasha, went above and beyond for us and had a smile on her face the whole time. I got the country fried steak and eggs which came with a biscuit, gravy, hashbrowns, and eggs which I ordered scrambled and added cheese to. It was a ton of food, plenty to share between myself and my toddler. I'm not even a hashbrown fan but these were great and the biscuit was cooked perfectly. I had the hardest time sharing the eggs with my son because I wanted to keep them all for myself! As great as the ambiance, service, and food are, the thing that keeps me coming back is the White Russian milkshake. It is my favorite drink in the entire Gulf Shores area.
