I was saddened when Chinese Bakery on El Cajon closed. I had been getting Chinese strawberry cakes from there for ages. BB's birthday was coming up quick (day of!) , and I decided I would try to get her a cake. I guess I was very optimistic in calling up Huy Ky. Not only did they say they could make the cake, but they said they could make it within a half hour! They wrote "Happy Birthday BB" on the top of the cake, and it was very well priced. BB and I loved the cake. It exemplified what I envision when I think of Chinese strawberry cake: Fresh strawberries, light, fluffy, simple, not too sweet, yet delicious. The lady who took my order was very nice both over the phone and in the store. Plenty of parking in a private lot also! This is definitely my new go to when it comes to Chinese strawberry cakes. read more

You can not convince me that there is better bakery in San Diego. With just a couple days until her party my daughter decided she wanted a heart shaped cake (we were having her party at a tea room, so originally we weren't going to do a cake) and a friend recommended we try going here. Well I am so glad that we did. On appearance this bakery is nothing glamorous, it's not an instagram worth spot by any means but it has a charm to it. It reminds me of the bakeries I would go to as a kid. The women working were so sweet and friendly and with just over a days notice they were able to make my daughter exactly what she wanted a heart shaped cake with whipped cream frosting, fresh strawberries for the filling and the lightest fluffiest cake we've ever eaten. They don't do super fancy decorated ones but it's freshly baked, the sponge cake is so soft, the buttercream is light, airy with the right amount of sweetness and the price is great! With at least a 24 hour notice, you can get a two tier cake for next day pickup. There's different flavors to choose from, the price depends on size and filling that you order. This review is for the snowy mooncake, as I don't think I have tried their regular mooncakes yet. The worst part is that the cake is so soggy, and so is the filling. Then it's too sweet for me. We just celebrated the Moon Festival 2924! We are so happy that Huy Ký continues to make their moon cakes! The moon cakes we bought this year are really fresh, filled with mixed nuts, citric fruits rinds, 2 large salted egg yolks (yummy)! These are sweet delights and can be very filling. One can enjoy with hot or cold tea, coffee, roasted barley, etc. The sweetness is right on for the traditional recipe of moon cakes. My personal preference is to have less less sweet, less sugar. It would be great if Huy Ky can make two separate batches, one with the original sweetness and one alternative to be less sweet and less sugar. It would be awesome! Thank you Huy Ky Bakery. I have never tried a mooncake before so I wanted to try 1. I went to 99 ranch to find out that they only had huge boxes for $20+. Then I went to this bakery and was happy to discover that they were holding a half off sale, so I scored a box of 4 mooncakes for $11.50. Perfect portion size and pricing to try out some of these mooncakes. The Asian female employee spoke with a thick accent but was friendly. I didn't know whether to get the mung bean or lotus seed so I asked what her favorite was. She said her favorite was lotus, so lotus it was! I was disappointed to find out that the mooncake #27 (wonder what the number means?) Cantonese style Lotus Bean flavor included soybean oil and red and yellow food coloring. I was expecting a small family owned bakery like this to avoid using those harmful low quality ingredients, but I guess I was wrong. Anyway, each mooncake contains over 800 calories and plenty of sugar and carbs. Yes, it was tasty. It was dense, sweet, and reminded me of the white bean filled buns I get from the Korean bakery. read more

Very dissapointed. It said mixed nuts with rotisserie chicken Gà Quay. But there isn't any chicken even 1 strand of chicken. And it cost $35 about $10 more than regular moon cake. What a rip off. Esp. Selling to their own people who also came to this country with the wish to find the same flavors of of the old days. This moon cake is fine but what it upsets me because it advertised things that does not have and charged as much as $10 extra just because it advertised that it has chicken. All I can find is mixed nuts. Even though it is much less greasy than moon cake made from China or other brands in US, but this is called fraud. I bought the mixed nuts from Costco only $17 from Taiwan, and same mixed nuts non greasy and they don't advertised something that they don't have. That imported moon cake is far better quality . No wonder Huy Ky is never passed the test to sell in Costco. I will never buy moon cake from Huy Ky. People, go and buy moon cakes from Costco only $17 and you don't get disappointed. I love this little bakery. It's always a nostalgic feeling and I bring my children here often, they love that the sweets are not too sweet. This bakery kind of has a "hole in the wall" type vibe, but don't judge a book by its cover. Their mooncakes are absolutely amazing!! My family and I get them annually around the Mid-Autumn Festival (around September) - or to be exact the 15th day of the 8th lunar month... My FAVORITE is the LOTUS, but they have tons of flavors such as Taro, Durian, Mung Bean, White Mixed Nuts, White Lotus, but there are SO MANY different combinations!! Love the sweet, salty, nutty combination of flavors, with a red bean paste or lotus seed paste filling is amazing flavor. For those who are vegans, these cakes contain eggs. I always buy boxes containing 4 cakes as presents for friends and family. Mooncakes are traditionally eaten in small wedges and accompanied by tea. Oh, the tin can is a pretty cool container. I went here in search of mooncakes after a friend's recommendation. I'm glad I did. The gentleman that greeted me was nice and very helpful. I had so many questions from what's kid friendly to how certain flavors tasted. He was kind enough to let me sample a lotus mooncake with salted egg that was yummy. The filling was silky smooth and the entire thing just melted in your mouth. The contrast of the salty egg with sweetness of the lotus filling was surprisingly delicious. I wish I got one with salted egg, but I knew my kids wouldn't eat it and they had run out of their variety box. The prices were reasonable ($21 for mung bean & $27 for lotus; each box came with 4 mooncakes) compared to other stores charging $35+ as a sale price. The mooncakes are 3.5in in diameter. Surprisingly, the gentleman also gave me a quick pick lotto ticket, which was something I had planned on getting afterwards so not only did he read my mind, but also saved me a trip. I don't recommend places too often, but this is one that highly recommend and would definitely return to. read more

Craving lotus seed paste or sticky sesame treats? This is your joint. I think they manufacture their fine Chinese baked goods here. (Maybe Vietnamese too?) I'm obviously no expert, but I did take in some nice big fat cultural learnings the other day. I wandered in and found none of the usual goods. Instead they were selling scads of these "mooncakes". Mooncakes are pastry traditionally eaten during the "Mid-Autumn Festival", the eastern version of a harvest celebration. So I bought a package of mooncakes and ate them outdoors under the open moon as I was instructed to do. The mooncake is really impressive. I think it had about 20 ingredients, including salted duck egg yolk. And really good. I think it was a good harvest year this year. On top of all that, they gave me a free lottery ticket with my order. It was a losing ticket, but if I had won, I'd have bought a ton of mooncakes. read more

I really dig this place. They have plenty of parking and the store is located right off the main street. My favorites are the mung bean glutinous cake, taro cake, and the winter melon bean cake. Definitely a go-to place for delicious and irresistible baked goods. This is my favorite traditional mooncakes shop! It tastes even better this year since they cut down some sugar in the mooncakes to make it healthier. I love the balance of sweet and healthy. The egg yolks in the mooncakes are very tasty. This review probably isn't fair since the bakery is known for their mooncakes (which come out full force around the Lunar Festival - approximately September of each year). I've visited this bakery once before during the Lunar Festival and they were completely sold out so I haven't had the fortune of trying their mooncakes. The bakery is located on the less developed/ older side of University Blvd. It has its own small lot, guarded by a strong iron fence. Both times that I have walked into this bakery, I've been less than impressed by the glass case and interior. There were hardly any items in the glass case, none that looked impressive. They have a few pate chauds, steamed pork buns (that didn't look all that fresh), and a few slices of cake that looked repackaged and not that appetizing. The man we met was kind enough, but overall it isn't much to look at inside or out. We purchased some beef jerky (Vietnamese style), but otherwise I can't say that there is much to write about this place. My husband claims that this is the go to place for moon cakes but you'd think they'd make some effort during the rest of the year. Looks like you can order cakes from them, but I'd be less inclined with the other options in San Diego. We'll have to return when it's the end of the year for the Lunar Festival. read more

Absolutely amazing service and cakes! My wife and I were celebrating our first child's baby shower and the bakery we initially ordered from had cancelled us the morning of the baby shower with almost no notice. I turned to Huy Ky Bakery for a cake with an extremely short turnaround, and they more than accommodated. I was able to order a fruit-topped, two-tier cake with multi-color blended icing. The turnaround was 2 hours, but they finished making the cake in even less time than that. The cake was very light and they used real fruit and even fresh taro for their fillings. Our family and friends absolutely loved the cake. I would definitely recommend Huy Ky Bakery for cakes for any type of event, they really saved us on our special day. I don't really go there for the pastry although I do occasionally buy their cream horns. They have both cream and mocha flavor. I really go there for their pork pies in puff pastry. I just can't get enough. I noticed today they had steamed buns in both pork and chicken. I tried the pork. I might try the chicken next time. While the steamed buns are good I prefer the ones in puff pastry. They have a variety of dessert pastries. Mostly what I would consider French pastry but they do have some other types as well. The owners are very nice and accommodating. They will even heat up my pork pastries in their microwave so I don't have to go home to heat them up. Very conveniently located.
