    Strawberry birthday cake
    Jenny N.

I got my birthday cake here and it was memorable! The sponge cake was light and fluffy. The whipped cream was not that sweet, which is a compliment for an Asian household. You could choose different fruit options to add to your cake. I got the strawberry one and we all enjoyed it.

My first visit to Huy Ky Bakery. I picked up mooncakes as a gift for the owners of Paris Bakery, who are presently engaged in opening a new outlet in Chula Vista called Banh Mi Paris Express. Huy Ky's owner, Mr. Yu, was helpful as I made my selection, and was gracious, offering me a peek behind the scenes at his work area, which is nicely set up with an impressive array of professional baking equipment. He also pulled up a video to show me how he makes his mooncakes, an enterprise that is much more complicated than I'd imagined. Having seen these things, and after spending a few minutes chatting with Mr. Yu, I'm not surprised that Huy Ky Bakery is a favorite source for mooncakes and other baked delights among San Diego's Vietnamese community. I'll be back! ********** See how mooncakes are made! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kx4dIRi1hZY

Coconut pandan cake , delicious and reasonably priced
    Sone M.

I was looking for a specific cake for my baby shower and came upon this mom and pop bakery in the heart of city heights , gentlemen at the counter was immediately welcoming and was friendly and attentive to what I was looking for , came on Tuesday for a cake for a Friday , all in all I barely spent 5 mins there and got what I needed , i ordered a pandan coconut cake and it was light / fluffy and delicious , not sure why in all the years living in Sandiego i didnt get to try this place , will come back for sure

Heart shaped birthday cake. Whipped cream frosting & fresh strawberry filling

You can not convince me that there is better bakery in San Diego. With just a couple days until her party my daughter decided she wanted a heart shaped cake (we were having her party at a tea room, so originally we weren't going to do a cake) and a friend recommended we try going here. Well I am so glad that we did. On appearance this bakery is nothing glamorous, it's not an instagram worth spot by any means but it has a charm to it. It reminds me of the bakeries I would go to as a kid. The women working were so sweet and friendly and with just over a days notice they were able to make my daughter exactly what she wanted a heart shaped cake with whipped cream frosting, fresh strawberries for the filling and the lightest fluffiest cake we've ever eaten. Not to mention incredibly affordable! I highly recommend coming here for all your cake needs. We will be back for sure!

"The log cake was not only beautifully decorated but also incredibly delicious, with a perfect balance of flavors and a soft, moist texture. Absolutely loved it!"

    Melissa C.

I come here for the cakes! They don't do super fancy decorated ones but it's freshly baked, the sponge cake is so soft, the buttercream is light, airy with the right amount of sweetness and the price is great! With at least a 24 hour notice, you can get a two tier cake for next day pickup. There's different flavors to choose from, the price depends on size and filling that you order. If mooncakes are your thing, this is the place to get them as well. Stop by, everyone is super helpful & friendly.

    Snowy mooncake, lotus filling
    N T.

This review is for the snowy mooncake, as I don't think I have tried their regular mooncakes yet. The worst part is that the cake is so soggy, and so is the filling. Then it's too sweet for me. So far, this is the sweetest one by far compared to other mooncakes. I bought this one 1 or 2 years ago. It was bad but I forgot which brand, so I bought again this week. I should remember the name now.

I worked with Kim at Huy Ky Bakery and it was a wonderful and delightful experience! I knew I wanted an Asian cake that wasn't too sweet or processed. Kim gladly accommodated all of my needs and requirements, even peanut allergies, and we had a delicious strawberry taro sponge cake. She was super responsive and kind throughout all of our communications. Our guests absolutely loved it and it was a hit! Truly a hidden gem in San Diego area -- I'll update once I get official photos from my vendors back but for now here is the photo I got of us cutting the cake from our guests!

    Lotus #27 Cantonese-style mooncake.
    Aejin H.

I have never tried a mooncake before so I wanted to try 1. I went to 99 ranch to find out that they only had huge boxes for $20+. Then I went to this bakery and was happy to discover that they were holding a half off sale, so I scored a box of 4 mooncakes for $11.50. Perfect portion size and pricing to try out some of these mooncakes. The Asian female employee spoke with a thick accent but was friendly. I didn't know whether to get the mung bean or lotus seed so I asked what her favorite was. She said her favorite was lotus, so lotus it was! I was disappointed to find out that the mooncake #27 (wonder what the number means?) Cantonese style Lotus Bean flavor included soybean oil and red and yellow food coloring. I was expecting a small family owned bakery like this to avoid using those harmful low quality ingredients, but I guess I was wrong. Anyway, each mooncake contains over 800 calories and plenty of sugar and carbs. Yes, it was tasty. It was dense, sweet, and reminded me of the white bean filled buns I get from the Korean bakery.

    My purchases
    Gary N.

Bought a few boxes for moon festival, since last year of Covid they were in shortage as they were afraid stuffs wouldn't sell. Anyway I usually just buy the thập cẩm gà quay because it was always within my budget, but then I saw the overhyped $45 box of bào ngư đặc biệt, thought I give it a try, well not so much special about it compare to a $25 box, but ok I still have 3 left to dissect; will see what's inside down the road.

Lots of chocolate and I think they added toffee in it too. The middle section had pistachio frangipane (or it looked like it) with coarsely chopped pistachios that brought another layer of crunch! Then to top it all off, it had pistachio cream on top of the cookie! I only wish I got another one. CAPPUCCINO It was okay. But love the foam! It was frothy and foamy! PAVLOVA The meringue was a bit too hard and too sweet and the pastry cream was overwhipped. Loved the fresh fig and blueberries though. I was looking forward to eating pavlova and this was very disappointing! KOUIGN AMANN Very buttery and sticky! Crispy on the outside. Every bite was not dry, but chewy. There was this sticky and chewy texture that wasn't unpleasant, yet it wasn't fully flaky like a croissant. But glad it was not dry! The kouign amann was not as tall like others I've tried, but I preferred it this way because it was not dry. The last kouign amann I had from Bread Lounge was dryyyy. But bought mine at a coffee shop too. PAIN AU CHOCOLAT Crispy on the outside, but I must have toasted a bit more, so the outside was a bit more toasted than desired. Inside was good. Good dark chocolate. BUTTER CROISSANT Really buttery, flaky, crispy! Ate it next day, so reheated it in the toaster oven to bring a more crispness all around. Really enjoyed this! Adding butter and jam is so good! LEMON MERINGUE Meringue had a strong eggy smell and flavor, the lemon was tangy, but not enough to rid of the eggy smell and flavor. The tart was hard and almost stale. I took a few bites and threw the rest out. PAIN SUISSE Chocolate flavor. Crispy on the outside, fluffy like a light spongy cake inside. Enjoyed this! CUSTOMER SERVICE Got there early afternoon. There was only one person in front of me. Good service overall. Quick service. Hits and misses of the various pastries I've tried. It will not deter me from trying their pastries though, as the really good ones were really good! Would love to return! Especially for that Choco Chip Pistachio Cookie!
