Talk about a bang for your buck! This place is amazing. By far the best sandwiches in san diego! I work the grave shift and would come here for my 8 am dinner. They have great sandwiches that dont skimp on anything, the meat is piled high and the veggies are just right. The tortilla soup is out of this world, with tons of chicken and huge chunks of avocado and the broth is out of this world. Eat here if you want, but I usually get take out which is just as good. My husband told me how great this place was and I finally got a chance to try it. The place used to be a taco stand but the hard-working Mexican family who bought it turned it into a deli. Who would have thought that they'd create a little bit of Big Apple paradise in a hidden spot in east county San Diego? Spring Valley, to be exact. The prices are reasonable, if not downright cheap. The food is excellent. Don't expect a big place, there are only about 6-8 tables inside, nothing fancy. But the burgers, the burgers are the best!!! Big, overflowing an already generous bun, thick, juicy, cooked the way you want it. This is not your average burger, it's totally unexpected. It's not the frozen pre-formed tasteless low-grade beef patty most places serve, this is really delicious, choice, maybe even prime grade. I could only eat half of my avocado bacon burger, hubby had to finish it, after he'd already downed his deli turkey and fries which also looked pretty good. He has breakfast there weekly which he raves about, he's picky so I believe him, doubly so after experiencing that burger. They do a big takeout business. While we were there, about half a dozen people came in for pickups. It's worth a trip off the beaten path to visit the Sunrise Deli. Ever since they've had new management this establishment has been terrible!!!!! The past 3 times I've order they messed up. I just ordered home fires instead of bacon but for some reason they bring me some uncooked bacon . this is the 3rd time this has happened. I advise no one to ever come to this place ... Personally I love machaca with egg therefore, I was pretty dissapointed with this machaca breakfast plate. It was cold and I felt they made it early in the morning and was heated up when order. I should of had a hamburger or sandwich which is what this place is known for. read more

This place is probably one of the only highlights of living in Spring Valley! The food here always hits the spot. I love getting their New Jersey Devil, which is a pastrami sandwich with melted cheese and buttered bread. Their philly cheesesteak is another favorite. Well, i have eaten here 4 or 5 times and its always great they are relatively fast even when they are packed. The atmosphere is hand written signage which is great cause its a family owned business not a corporate giant thats whats so great about it. I love the avocado burger its big it looked like half pound and lots of avo yum, very tasty and the fries were great and a soda all for 6.99 with tax. Both my husband and I love this place. I've been a couple of times and I took my husband recently and he loved it. He's from Orange County and a total burger snob cuz they have a mom and pop burger place on every corner up there. This place changed owners a short while back. They have put a lot of money into it and cleaned it up quite a bit. We've tried several different plates. The lady is from Pennsylvania and didn't dis the cheesesteak. I've tried several different sandwiches with pleasant surprise each time. The salads are very good as well. I just absolutely love this place!!! Never a bad moment. They give you a perfect amount of food!! My mom and sister went when we 1st moved to the area and bought carna asada fries and They said They were disgusting! So I never tried it. My fiance went one day to get a juicy Burger and said it was really good. He left some so I could try. The Burger was a little cold and was still fabulous. I wandered into the best feel that changed my whole day. I came in 2 minutes before they closed and didn't know. Not only did they make me a hot sandwich made with fresh vegetables but made me fresh hot French fries. Alex and Chef Gordon will be seeing me often from now on. This place has some of the rudest and unprofessional employees I have ever seen in a mom and pop food establishment. I order food without cheese as I am allergic. I was told that nothing can be done. And mocked as he told me. Then they didnt want to return my money. Instead tried to force me into buying food I didnt ask for. When they finally returned my money, they didnt even give me my full change return. To further insult, when asked about the remaining amount, the cashier behaved as if she had given me correct return, while I'm full on informing her that she did not. Apparently food is not cooked freshly here as I was told my meal was prepared the night prior. This is disgusting. The practice of their service is even more so. There are way more mom and pop shops that deserve your patronage. As they will care to make what they were paid to provide. This place, the cook will just shug his shoulders and laugh in your face. Wow. All I can say is "Wow!" This is the place to go if you can't make up your mind about what you want to eat. For sure. They have sandwiches, specialty sandwiches, burgers, really, really big burgers, they have breakfast omelets, egg plates, pancakes, French toast, and they even have a "Healthy Breakfast" which I had the pleasure of enjoying Sunday morning. It was an omelet-looking thing with spinach, sunflower seeds, sesame seeds (I believe), tons of veggies and comes with cottage cheese and fresh fruit, all for under $6.00. Really. In fact, you would be hard pressed to find anything on the menu for more than that. We have had the "Starvin Marvin" burger plate too and oh my! A 1/2 burger patty (all the burgers are 1/2 pounders) with bacon, cheese, sauteed mushrooms (if you want them), avocado slices, lettuce, tomato, onion and a pickle wedge all on 2 pieces of toasted Texas-sized sourdough bread. And, as if that isn't enough... every plate comes with fries and a drink INCLUDED in the price for under $6.00. No fooling. The kids had pancake plates with 2 pancakes, really excellent home-fried potatoes, and scrambled eggs for under $4.00. My wife enjoyed an omelet made with bacon, avocado slices and cheese, hash browns and toast. Everybody there was raving about what we should try because it is all so good. The people working behind the counter are incredibly friendly, hard working and get your food out ASAP and with a smile. I have been there 2 times now and have already learned they came from a restaurant in La Jolla, saved to buy the taco shop in Casa De Oro. Then they converted that into a deli that sells burgers, tons of specialty sandwiches and breakfasts. You just have to try this place. You may have to look for parking because their lot is tiny but the outside patio is kind of nice and the food... well, like I said. All I can say is "Wow!" Sad news! This business was sold in 2013. Since then, they have stopped using fresh ingredients, they use lower grade meats, the portions are only about 2/3 the size they used to be, the order accuracy has fallen, and the food just doesn't taste good anymore. Our family used to love this neighborhood hub. I think the best way I can explain the change is to tell you that back in the day, you could never pass this place without seeing a Sheriff patrol car, ambulance, or fire truck parked outside while the People Who Know got their food. I absolutely love this place. Friendly people always makes a bonus when you go to any food joint. I like getting the grilled chicken salad with bacon added. They make you feel welcome. There are so many other things on the menu getting a salad from here you are sure to be pleased. The grilled chicken has never been dry and it has good flavor. This place has is such a hole in a wall but is one of the best hamburger places I have ever eaten. If you want a burger that is reasonable in price, get the STARVIN MARVIN'!! IT IS AMAZING!!! If you are watching your weight, maybe you shouldn't, just keep reading. This burger is soooooo yummy, I crave it and I'm not too much of a burger person unless it's In & Out or here. Anyway, Starvin Marvin consists of aged 1/4 or 1/2 pound beef, with sauteed mushrooms, cheese, bacon and avocado on a thick buttered toast! They also have the lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and pickles on the side. But if you eat it and assemble it, it is Just Divine and need I say huge?! Man, just writing about it, it's making my mouth water. Their fries, although are steak fries, so if you don't ask them to make it crunchy, it would just be soft and bleh. If you buy any meal, they include soda! Which I think is pretty cool. Reasonable price, nice people and when you ask for ranch, they don't charge you. I have tried their other stuff, hot dogs w/ extra stuff in it, (yum) and other things I can't remember but I have not been disappointed. But when I go there, I have to order the Starvin Marvin! I rated this place 4 stars bec of their fries and its so far from my house. But it was close to my old work. Too bad I don't get to eat there enough. Sunrise deli is what you'd call a sure bet. No matter what, every single time I go there I leave happy. The New Jersey Devil has captivated my heart and I won't have a pastrami sandwich anywhere else in town. This place is out of the way, but trust me, it's worth it.
