We ultimately opted for a replacement because they offered excellent, creative payment options--and they had a team out the very next morning to get everything installed. Requested installation of new air conditioner. Apprentice arrived at 9 a.m (time quoted between 9-10) and sat in truck by end of drive. Needed to go out and see what the person wanted. Supervisor at 11 - took another customer in Salem ( I live in Milwaukie) instead of me. Neither person able to install new thermostat-supervisor had to call someone else on phone, still no go. After 45 minutes of this told him to install old one. Two days later have a red light on that I will have to call help number to know how to turn off. Supervisor not done until 6.p.m. UNRELIABLE! read more

It gives me no pleasure sharing how awful my experience has been. First. I wanted a heat pump. Matthew the salesman told me that heat pumps aren't that great, and that whenever they install them, customers call them back for something different. Maybe its not the heat pumps that are bad, buddy. Next day, Peter the electrician shows up alone to replace my electrical panel. Let's back up here. Electrical panels don't cost $4,541 like Sunset charged me for it. They cost $400. OK, so see the hole in the wall that Peter left. That was the hole he meant to send the new circuit through. When I saw the hole I asked what was going on? That wasn't the plan. Matthew told me cable would be run through the wall up through the attic, essentially invisible. Peter gives me a dumbfounded look . Its only him here. There's no way he's going to be able to route that circuit inconspicuously alone. So then I have to get out MY ladder, crawl into MY HOT ATTIC, and help this guy feed a circuit the way that I was told it was going to go. (BTW Peter left that hole in the wall. yep. Just left it, see pic) And this is after I had to help remove a cabinet off the wall, which I was offered NO HELP WHATSOEVER to replace on the wall. Other things because I'm already furious and irritated just recollecting this dubious installation and I can't possibly go through every detail. - HVAC installers tell me that the sales guy doesn't know what he's talking about I'm going to try to keep this short bc the more i recollect the more irritated i become. Had to ask, hey do you have the white touchscreen thermostat? HVAC Installer: *gives a look* ooooh, let me check.. they sent me with a black one -__- another design choice explicitly discussed with Matthew which was clearly not communicated - Koby debates with me about why the refrigerant lines from the outdoor unit can't run inside on the planned route due to the joists in the garage. I tell him its quite possible, just the way Peter and I did the circuit. I take him inside the garage and show him how accessible the route is. I even offer to go back in the f****** attic to help. He sees this, and briefly concedes. Then he explains that you wouldn't want to bend the refrigerant lines that much. That if it kinks, they'll need to return to re-run the lines. Therefore, the lines will have to be run some other way which is not the design you were sold Mr Homeowner.. But don't worry the HVAC installer will make it nice and tidy. Meanwhile, the hole that's been carved into the roof overhang is roughly four times the necessary size for the refrigerant line to go through. In fact, it's such a large hole and so poorly placed that there's no way that it will be concealed by the same covering which will conceal the lines on the outside of the home. Also, there are teeth marks next to the hole where the installers originally caught themselves before making it even more poorly placed. (see pic) Right. so. Then there's the furnace hanging about 1.5 inches off the shelf its supposed to sit on. And the fact that I had to ask about the gaping hole and if it would just be left like that. (Koby: oh! Thanks for reminding me about that. Yeah, I've got some expanding foam...) Even the duct cleaning went horribly, and attempts at remedying wrongs done are failing miserably. thoroughly disgusted. Traumatized, in my own F****** house. I don't even want to be here anymore. Like, I literally want to sell my house now so that I can get away from the place where I was so violated. The lack of communication. The lack of delivery of design promises. The damage. The ME HAVING TO ASSIST WITH INSTALL. The need to constantly remind and nudge and oversee. The poor quality. Not to mention sky high inflated prices. This is Sunset Heating and Cooling. As far as is my experience. What will your experience be? read more

A fraud company. Instead of provide honest suggestion, they just pushed me purchase and replace everything. The pipe of the heating was leaking, and I called Sunset to inspect, and the tech called Manuel from Sunset said we must replace all the furnace, air exchanger, and venting. In addition, he suggested me to replace water heater as well, although the water heater still function well. I chose to trust him and replace all the machines. After replacement, THE PIPE IS STILL LEAKING. And the promised venting was not re-built, and the labor and the material cost was still charged. And the city permission didn't come which we also charged for this part. So, for now, it turns out that they didn't complete any of their promise in the agreement. I spent a lot of money, but nothing was fixed. And what makes the thing worse is that I realized that they over charged me extra ~$1200 with no reason ($1200 more than what we agreed in the contract). That is ridiculous. By the way, then I compared their price with other installation companies. Their charge is higher than others. Now, considering the situation, I would suspect that the company is doing some fraud by providing some inaccurate suggestions, overcharging and asking for replacement which is significantly more than necessary. I have had a HORRIBLE TERRIBLE AWFUL experience with this company. I had them replace a furnace in December. They damaged the entire thermostat system and this left me without heat or with blasting heat for days on end. They finally replaced the thermostat at their expense but the work has not passed city inspection now twice and they are refusing to correct the situation. This has been going on since December 21 2026 and I am at my wits end. I have a credit care dispute ongoing and they refuse to back their work until they are paid in full. read more

When I was in need, they were able to have someone diagnose my problem SAME DAY! The service tech they sent out was very thorough with his analysis of my system, and offered me a fair estimate on the cost of repairs. Given how old my system was, he also offered a replacement. At the end of the visit, I ended up going with a full system replacement because I understood a repair would just be a band-aid on my system, not an actual fix. When it came time to do the installation, the team that showed up was great. They introduced themselves and walked me through what the installation would look like, which made me feel more comfortable with what was going on. They worked really efficiently and cared for my home by placing drop cloths everywhere. At the end, they walked me through their installation and showed me everything they did. They even walked me through how to use my new bougie thermostat! Overall, I had a phenomenal experience with Sunset and I would absolutely recommend them to others! read more

I am not one to give a bad review, but at this point I feel it is necessary. I had this company (which I have used for years to maintain my gas heater) install a minisplit system for my entire small home in June 2025. Within 2 days, the system wasn't working. I called and they said they would be out that day --- but they never arrived even though I called 4 times to see what time they'd be out. When they did arrive a week later, they said it was a fluid issue and it was fixed. It wasn't. Over the last YEAR I have had them out several times to fix the system which does not work on cool for more than a few hours. It is now May 2026 and they have not yet repaired it. I called Sunday to report that it was out....again. They were to come out yesterday. They didn't. They said they'd be out first thing this morning. Nope. At this point I am not sure this will ever be repaired. Do NOT use this company! I have never encountered this kind of incompetence. read more

We were in the middle of a kitchen cabinet project when we discovered that the vent for our cooktop needed to be relocated. We called Sunset, and Taylor was incredibly prompt, knowledgeable, and gave us a very reasonable bid. He immediately knew what needed to be done and helped us navigate the situation quickly. They responded to a request to replace a GFI outlet that tripped when outdoor lights shorted and the outlet wouldn't reset. They were the first to respond to a Yelp request and came the next day. Jack, the technician, was excellent but he quoted over $700 for the job. After talking to his supervisor, the charge was reduced to $212 for one GFI outlet plus labor at $524/hr. The bill came to $600 for one outlet and 45 min of labor. The pricing is ludicrous. We don't recommend them even though Jack did a good job. read more

This has been the worst experience with a company in my life. I'm incredibly disappointed because Sunset has a good reputation. The good: Every tech and installer that's been to my house has been polite, helpful, and on time. Every call center worker has been polite and apologetic to us. The bad: We've been charged twice for a chimney liner install and for a B vent replacement - neither of which actually took place. We've been charged twice for the total care membership - two different amounts. We've been charged $1200 on an invoice for an unlisted item/service and no one can tell us what it's for. Part of the work they've done on our home is not up to code, and we can't get anyone out to look at it or make a plan to revise it. We've called probably 10+ times about these issues. We've yet to speak to a manager or someone who can fix the problem. It seems like the techs, installers, and call center employees have no way of actually reaching management. Horrible way to run a company! I feel bad for the front-line employees. By the way, this has been ongoing since April and it's now mid-November. I can't recommend Sunset to anyone. :/ read more

Called 3-4 times and the response was always, we'll call you back and still no updates or new appointment to install part. One month without heating waiting around. The most garbage company on the planet. Had a major electrical service scheduled. Delay after delay, took 2 months longer than the promised date. HANIEL, the guy who was supposed to make things right flat out ignored me and wouldn't return my calls. No apologies or discounts offered for all the nonsense and hassles for myself and my tenant. Now granted, we are only in our second week with A/C, but what a doozy of a heat wave it is! I have wanted to get air conditioning installed for years. With my furnace celebrating its 24th birthday, now seemed like a good time to replace it and finally get A/C. I got 3 estimates, and Sunset's was not only the most reasonable, but the only one that didn't require the "additional" cost of a new set of breakers. I worked with Rolf for the review of the house, estimate, and bid, but he made sure to check with the electrician before promising anything. Rolf was great about the questions that came up, patient with me, even came out again! He was also honest about the possible need to remove a bit of the ceiling to get the piping through. He helped me find a great place to put the cooling unit that wouldn't be somewhere we'd trip over it. He even crawled up into our attic, filled with blown-in insulation, to find out why the venting upstairs wasn't working. He even told me he'd put several of my needs in the file for the installers. Rolf also suggested a control panel that would be great, and told me I could buy it directly for less, and have an upgraded system, on my own through Amazon. Not a huge money saver, but money saved, nonetheless. Rolf even told me how to get the A/C to work better upstairs. Rolf was able, two weeks before the super hot weather had already been predicted to hit, to get my installation in as soon as 3 days after I signed the contract. I waited until the next week so I could *ahem* clear a good path for them through the old toy area/leaky pipe area. The installers came a day early, but gave me no trouble when I said I wasn't ready and had scheduled for the following day. They showed up just on time the next day and introduced themselves. They had me walk them around, then got down to it. I had somewhere to be, so left them to it. Jake came to me and said, as Rolf had, that they might need to open the ceiling. Guess what? He made it happen without removing any drywall!Rolf had found a kink or something that was preventing air from coming through the upstairs vents. Thanh, the electrical expert, came and introduced himself to me before starting work. He did everything perfectly, even arrived earlier than needed just so he could be there when they were ready. Ishmael went up into the attic and made sure that it was all working before he went back down for the final work. He went above and beyond, even securing the attic fan that had been poorly installed years ago, so the terrible racket is gone!! When they had finished the work, Jake explained everything to me - what they had added, what they had installed, all the ins and outs. I can't tell you how much happier we are with the new system! I added the air purifier, which makes me happy and was worth the extra. Life is grand, and we are all much happier. And sleep SO well. Mid day, even during a heat wave, is productive! I was nervous, based on the reviews, to choose them. My mom thought I was crazy, but I really liked Rolf and all my interactions with Sunset. I think the rating is so low because most of us happy customers are too busy being cooled off and happy to write anything. There are going to be people who don't have the best experiences, or see the flaws. If my kids could yelp review me; I'm sure I would get 2-3 stars. My one suggestion - the products are MUCH bigger than they look like they will be on paper. Jake explained to me that they are bigger to be more efficient. Have someone tell you the dimensions before anything is done. Rolf did offer me a smaller unit, but knew my budget and how I wanted it to be made up in the value of the house. read more

Called day of appointment to reschedule the first time, no explanation. Called day of next appointment after one technician showed up, but the other was apparently in a car accident. Rescheduled for Monday, and once again no-call, no-show. Have tried 4 times to get a resolution with customer service/dispatch, no luck. Never would trust this company again. read more

25 June 2024 -- Craig did an excellent job rewiring from the outside unit to the thermostat and cleaned the evaporator coils. Craig exceeded our expectations and ensured we were satisfied. Solid 5 stars! 7 July 2024. Jaime Cochrane came out for an emergency service. Jaime found a blown capacitor and compressor issues. Jaime was able to replace the capacitor and "jump-start" the compressor. Jaime suggested replacing the 20+ year-old unit. As we were already discussing a replacement, we went ahead and agreed and put the 1/2 down. As we agreed to replace the unit, Jamie did not charge for the service. Outstanding service. 6 out of 5 stars. read more

I would not recommend Sunset. We had two incidents with them. In the winter, we had maintenance done on our furnace. They left without performing the after maintenance checks and the burner would not ignite. We were left without heat for two days. Sunset said sorry but we can't get back out for at least two days. The next incident was replacing an electrical conduit. A trench was required in our garden. We prepared the area for the trench by removing the plants. The area was bare. When the trench was dug, the dirt was dumped on plants outside the work area. Although there were alternative places to place the dirt, they decided to destroy the good part of the garden. They rescheduled the work three times. Three different people on three different occasions said they would make it right We are still waiting. This one day job took eight days to complete. They never did fix their mistakes. We will not be doing any more business with Sunset and I suggest you don't either. read more

This company inspected out HVAC system and cleaned our air vents, which was fine. They also installed an ionic air filter. After that was done, our system blew fuses and disabled the thermostat because the work was done wrong. They didn't install the transformer needed for the ionic filter, and they left wires touching bare metal. It cost us almost $800 to have another company come and fix the mess they made. Also, the man who installed the filters, broke a piece on the front of the furnace. He used a saw to cut that piece out to replace it, and in the process cut into the copper pipe for the compressed refrigerant. There was an explosion of freon into our house. Then he brought in a welder to fix the pipe, and left small burn marks on our hardwood floor, and specks of ash on nearby furniture. By the time he left, I felt like we had let the Cat-in-the-Hat loose in our house. Never hire this company! read more
