Juan serviced the furnace first and directed me to a different filter that would clean better, and provide a healthier environment. We requested a complete retrofit install. The rep provided generous incentives and a competitive bid but after multiple requests for a detailed design for the ductwork we decided to go with a different company. The explanation was the ductwork would be to completed to "industry standards" according to the installation manager's design. But despite numerous requests could not get them to provide even a basic design for the retrofit ductwork design. This was enough of a red flag for us to not accept their otherwise generous estimate. We were asking for the Trane XV18/TAMX system. Without a verified ductwork design it would be like buying a Ferrari with bicycle tires. read more

Left a negative review a little over 2 years ago after having Sunset Heating & Cooling install 2 separate mini-split heat pumps with 4 heads. Last Saturday, 11/23/24 I got out of bed in the morning to find no power to 1 set. Checked out as much as I could and then called Sunset to say I needed service as my 2 heads had no power and they were dead! Lady told me I might not get a call back from a technician until maybe the next day or Monday. Monday called and the first lady on Saturday had not passed on the call for service! Monday my daughter called and was told "Sorry" (lots of those) the service was not passed on. She apologized many times and said she was handling herself, gave her name and her phone number and supposedly scheduled. Service was for Wednesday 11/27/24 between noon and 4:00 pm. About 10:30 this morning, my daughter got a call back from this Mariah that they were going to have to cancel the service call as the one technician they have was out sick! What! You didn't know that earlier this morning? No one else? NOTHING BUT PROBLEMS WITH THIS COMPANY. STEER CLEAR AND GO TO BASICALLY ANYONE ELSE! I am 76 years old and have not had my heater working since sometime during last Friday night! Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Wonder how long it will take me to get someone else out! Also just found out after having another issue checked into, that SUNSET did not cap off the outside piping basically open to small animals and bugs/insects and squirrels are going up the pipe into my attic space and had not caused any issues yet as it just started, but that would have been a bad mess inviting them in to stay warm! They were super quick and responsive when I had them install a new hvac system last October. The system has failed TWICE since install during times leading up to heatwaves. Not during a heatwave, but within 2-3 days of a heatwave hitting, so it's not like the system is under stress. I called in on Friday as soon as we noticed the system was down again. I was promised a call back. Instead, I received a text message saying I would be contacted the next day. Unsurprisingly, they did not call me today. They originally sold and installed our heating and central air system and did a great job. Their service was reliable and trustworthy until retcently. We then had them come by for a free inspection that they offered. I was told that a capacitor in the AC was "out of spec" and should be replaced for "384". In my experience with smaller electronics, I thought that capacitors were cheap, so this would be okay as preventative maintenance. When he was done, I found out the part was $384 and not $3.84. (I still feel like an idiot about that.) The tech then brought me outside and showed me a pipe that should be replaced because it was "badly corroded". In reality, there was a bit of surface rust in some places where the paint was worn. He then said that at ten years old, we should consider a full system replacement. I don't know if this was the result of an ownership change or what, but this company is now off my list and I'm back here looking for a replacement. read more

Their technicians don't know what they are doing. They tried to tell me my air cleaners were not working and tried to sell me new air cleaners. I had the original installer come out and the air cleaners were working fine. They also said they cleaned the interior of my furnace, however, the original installer noted several items that Sunset said they did but weren't cleaned or checked. I would not recommend them, I have cancelled my maintenance agreement with them. read more

Long story short, don't bother calling them if you need service or repair on a non-Daikin product. They will quote you an absurd price for repairs to nudge you to purchase a whole new system. I had one part fail in the AC condenser and their repair solution was quoted at $4,000 and a new system was quoted at $10,000. They wanted to fully replace the air handler/furnace and condenser even though neither unit had issues. Both were functioning properly and only 8 years old. I've since had the condenser unit repaired for $1500 and it is now working perfectly again. read more

Wanted an immediate down payment for "good faith". Called another company for a second look, they said the system is just fine and charged me $350 for a quick fix. Sunset are salesmen, swindlers, pigs. They'll lie to your face especially if you're new to HVAC, they can smell you a mile away. When I told them I was going with another company, they harassed me by phone. The VERY GOOD: I got the best technician I have ever had for A/C maintenance (Rafael.) He was courteous, thorough, knowledgeable, respectful and very nice. He evaluated my 17 year old system and showed me what was wrong with it and offered me different solutions with different costs which is what I asked for. I will need to seriously consider the options before I make a decision. He also explained to me what other services I could have to improve the livability in my home. That was very helpful. I hope I get Rafael back again as my tech. The VERY BAD: the service appointment, paid ahead last fall, had to be re-scheduled 3 times! Of course the company does not give you a specific time. It gives you a 4-8 hrs window. The cancellation either happened the evening before or at the end of the day which is very annoying and not customer friendly. They reached out to us with a cheap annual checkup special for only $29, I think it was. My wife was here when their man came and he told her it would need repairs so she picked a date for soon afterwards. When the time was just about upon us I asked her, BTW, how much is this going to cost? She gave me a number somewhere north of two thousand dollars. WHAT??? I called Sunset, told the woman who does their schedule that something had come up and I would have to cancel. I also said, Before we reschedule, please have the technician who was here call me. She has called and texted me at least four or five times since then but I have not heard from Manuel, the guy who was here to sell us more than $2,000 in repairs, even though the heating system had done a flawless job of keeping this 115-year-old house cozy all last winter. We have been customers for 3 years and subscribe to their annual service agreement ($300). Recently a tech came for a check up and told us we needed a new capacitor, even though the unit worked fine. They charged us $300 for the part. Two days later, the AC stopped working. When we called and asked someone to come out and fix it they lied and said someone would call in the morning. No one did. Then they said someone would call us back soon. No one did. Now they say they can't tell us when they'll come to fix the thing they broke, maybe sometime next week. It's 100 degrees outside, so maybe doesn't cut it. In short, they use a message service so no one has to deal with actual customers. Everything is done by relay so they don't have to stand by their work. Very unprofessional and sneaky and they won't refund our money. I do NOT recommend this company. read more

The technicians are excellent. Rafael was courteous, knowledgeable, thorough and respectful of property during his visit. My biggest complaint with them is their scheduling. You have to pay them in advance and then trying to have them show up to a scheduled appt is ridiculous. They cancelled twice without notifying you. You have to call to see why they didn't show up after waiting for them for hours just to be told you have to reschedule. It seems they are either understaffed or bad at scheduling. read more

Use this company at your peril. Sunset is the only HVAC company I have seen with more 1-Star reviews than 5-Star reviews! That should tell you something. I 2023, I spent $36K to upgrade my HVAC system to heat pumps and air handlers. Sunset added 140A of strip heating breakers to an already nearly full 200A electrical panel supported by a 14KW emergency Generac generator (the generator's existence and the panel capacities were fully disclosed to Sunset). It all works fine until it gets cold and PGE power goes out when it is cold----which it is usually is when the power goes out. With the power out, the generator kicks in but since it now cannot meet the increased amperage draw caused by the addition of 140A of strip heating, it is therefore overloaded and shuts off and none of the circuits supported by the generator work. Therefore, no heat or important appliances and outlets work when they are needed most. This possibility was never disclosed to me. Sunset (among, other things, a licensed electrical contractor) has taken the position that this problem is mine. They say that they installed the equipment per our agreement and that any electrical problems their installation caused are not their problem and even suggested that my generator may have not worked in the first place. However, they did offer to upgrade my generator for roughly $10,000! I have been a Sunset customer in Portland for more than 40 years and I am outraged by them not taking responsibility for this situation. Online, I subsequently learned that Sunset was sold to Apex, an Orlando-based company, a couple of years ago. No longer a locally owned company, Apex has become focused on revenues and profits rather than service, possibly with an eye to squeezing the numbers very hard and then going public. That said, the technicians and other support personnel have been very professional. Check out their other Yelp reviews. Sunset's average Yelp rating is lower than any other local HVAC company. read more

This company is so hard to work with, and their staff are rude. We are a Church, and they made us a deal and said to do this and that, then they call us back demanding other conditions. Then they installed furnace, and came back 6 times to get the thing working. Then when it came to inspections, the County install inspection passed, electrical did not, all over a over rated fuse. I changed fuse out, and County inspector said he would be out Monday to do final inspection, but never showed up. I call Sunset about the inspection, and they said install and electrical passed inspection, all was good. Today, 6/19/2025, they now call to say that they need to schedule a technician to fix electrical and then another inspection with the County needs to be done, after I was told, all was finished. Sunset does not keep promises, demands money, they send technicians out one after another, and when I try to explain how difficult this is, and yes, I get upset, they start making me feel like the enemy. My furnace of 20 years ago with Morison Heating and Cooling, the install and was done in a day along with inspection, and this was a Goodman Furnace, and all went terrific. Since going with Sunset who bought our Morison, it has been one issue after another. Sorry for losing my cool, but coming out 6 or more times, and having County inspectors and Technicians running through my house constantly is nerve racking. Technicians are great, it is the management and call center that is rude and poor business, and the inability to make decisions and get it right the first time, is unbearable. read more

Furnace problem on a snowy day. Tech showed up and told my non-native-English speaker that he wouldn't start work without $1000 inclement weather fee. After my protest, he backed off to $250, claiming a misunderstanding with management, which I find to be odd. Tech did give us a proper diagnosis of the problem and quoted $350 repair, which I resolved myself for $100. Actually $20 with $80 overnight shipping. Another 1-star update. We are without heat for the *fourth* time since we paid $14,000 for a heat pump. They said they'd send someone out today, nobody showed up, and when we called again they said nobody will be here today but we'll "probably" hear from someone tomorrow. During past visits, technicians have confirmed that the unit failed due to a combination of poor installation and the unit not being completely functional - we have done nothing to cause the issues, per their own technicians. Despite that, they refuse to send someone out in a timely fashion or help us invoke our warranty (which we paid thousands of dollars extra for). It will be in the 40s tonight and we don't have heat. We've filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and would very very strongly advise against using this company. We are out $14,000 and we don't even have heat. read more
