Bacon & Avocado Burger with Swiss Cheese and Fries
    Mike L.

As much as I hate to admit it, it's pretty clear to me now that, despite how long they've been around, I actually didn't know nearly as much about Bullshead as I thought I did. Up until my visit here, I was always under the impression that they were an old school spot that primarily served up burgers along with a handful of non-burger dishes. So, in some ways, I was pretty spot on, but it'd also be more than fair to say I underestimated them by quite a bit as well! Stepping inside, the look of Bullshead feels a little dated, but, as one of the oldest restaurants in West Portal, that came as no surprise. What did, though, is how extensive the menu is. Honestly, it might have the widest variety I've ever seen - nearly two dozen types that come with either a 1/3 or 1/2 pound patty made with ground beef, turkey, bison, or Beyond Meat (they also have a fish burger, portobello burger, and a veggie burger). However, in the event you want something else, they have plenty to offer - over a dozen different sandwiches (chicken, patty melts, reubens, BLT, club, etc.), fried chicken, steaks, ribs, fish & chips, seafood plates, a salad bar, and so much more! Since I had already planned on getting a burger before we even walked in, it didn't take me long to settle on what to get. As appealing as some of their offerings looked, I immediately settled on their AVOCADO & BACON BURGER with a 1/3 lb beef patty ($19.45) as soon as I saw it. All in all, this was pretty solid. In particular, I loved how generous they were with the bacon, the Swiss cheese I added (+$1) tasted so good, and the patty was quite juicy. Plus, I liked that the avocado and veggies were so fresh! That said, the bun was just okay (kind of dry) and the fries were rather starchy/chalky and not all that crispy. While part of me is pretty tempted to try their ribeye and NY steak that folks seem to be so high on, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't also scared to, given how my burger was so overcooked. Besides, considering how you can get a decent burger with so many options, as well as fries, for about $20, it almost feels like a deal these days. Calibur down the street would still be my go-to spot for a burger around here, but there's no question Bullshead is where to go if you want more options. THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up.

Old school burger and steak joint located near the West Portal Metro Station. Grill located at the front of the restaurant, brick and wood interior with sports memorabilia on the walls. Check out the M-F burger, fries and beer or drink special. Numerous burger and meat items, beef or bison, 1/3 or 1/2 pound burgers, various burger and vegetarian options. Many of the diners are loyal long time customers. Charming restaurant, good service, and good food. Parking can be a challenge - white drop off zone in front.

We came to Bullshead for dinner due to a friend's recommendation, as a large party of 9. Even though we came 40 minutes before closing, we were served with utmost care and they did not kick us out even though we stayed almost an hour past closing. I commend the restaurant for great service and accommodating our multiple requests. That said, the food was mixed. I did appreciate the healthier bison burgers, which were very large, but the burger itself was more plain with a soft untoasted bun, and was more no frills despite the higher price tag. The curly fries were tasty though, and the salad bar (which can be added to an entree for $7.50) came with a fairly extensive selection of things. The salad bar was running low on items though since it was the end of the day. The interior of the restaurant was cozy, and the restaurant is really not that big. Parking is street only and can get tricky, but the restaurant is also just outside the West Portal Muni station so you can easily take public transit in. Overall, the service and salad bar were great, but I was a bit underwhelmed with the burgers.

A great divey burger joint. Not the type of a place I frequent but it's been in the neighborhood forever and a friend said the burgers are the best. So I tried it and friends... it really was. Not too greasy but greasy enough. IYKYK. I just got the regular burger with sweet potatoe fries. So good! Def be back, esp after a night of drinking!

Snack craving satisfied! Out and about we wanted to share a cheese burger. Stopped in The Bullshead Restaurant on Ulloa and West Portal Avenue near the West Portal Tunnel. We chose to split a half pound cheddar cheese burger and fries. Ordered medium with the pickles, tomato slices and lettuce on the side. We had an iced tea and a root beer. Our order was grilled to perfection in a few minutes! There is a nice salad bar, a nice option for a healthy choice.

So glad to finally try this spot! I've been walking by for months and finally found the night to try. First of all - everyone who we interacted with was so friendly and service was incredibly fast. They were so kind helping us with a high chair. The vibes are old school and I loved it. Didn't get a chance to dive into the salad bar but will next time. I had the garlic burger which was perfectly cooked and delicious, my wife had a cheeseburger. We also got a burger for our daughter off the kids menu. 10/10 will be back again

Doesn't look like much on the outside or maybe even the inside, basic is an understatement. If all you care about is aesthetics go somewhere else. If you want a fine piece of meat, great service and a superb deal, WELCOME TO BULLSHEAD!! I won't bore you with specifics but the ribeyes are great, the salad bar is an unbeatable deal and service is fast!! When I am in the area. I will be sure to check this place out again.

Craving a steak so stopped by Bullshead (3rd visit). Saturday night and we got in right before it filled up. Ordered a ribeye medium rare, salad bar, baked potato, and a side of mushrooms. Spouse ordered a 1/3 lb bison blue cheese and mozzarella burger with a side of fries. Highlights: the steak had a beautiful sear on it and was perfectly cooked; the baked potato was also perfectly soft/fluffy; perfect cook on the burger which had great flavor; love me a salad bar! Downsides: no seasoning on the mushrooms; the steak was under-seasoned; the fries were very sad. Overall a solid 4 and will return.

    Katie L.

Great food and great service! We got the chuck burger with grilled onions and the avocado bacon burger. The food came out quickly and it was very tasty. The place has an old-school vibe, which adds to the charm- you just know the food is going to be good.

Good Reuben, but old ugly atmosphere and customers. Grace was not there. Servers had no personality. Did not leave a tip.

You can tell this is a neighborhood spot. Many locals come here to have a reasonably priced meal. It wasn't too loud and the service was good but slower when busy. We waited for about 10 minutes before we were seated. My husband said the turkey burger was good and that he would return for it... we are in search of the best turkey burger in SF. The sweet potato fries were amazing! Nice and crispy! My steak was juicy and cook was perfect. The only thing was that it wasn't seasoned. I salted my food and it was fine. I also love the salad bar. It offered a variety!

First time at this restaurant & best believe I'll be back! It's not super big inside, but the quality of the steak is super good. The service is so good and they serve the food pretty fast. Parking can be hard, but the food is really good

This has the best Bison burger I ever had. The service is great with a local San Francisco atmosphere in West Portal. I like the ambience of having my favorite sports teams on display on the wall.

I had passed by it countless times on my bike ride to work without giving it a second thought -- until a co-worker suggested we stop in for lunch. That single visit changed everything. I went with the Hot Pastrami Sandwich, and I still think about that first bite. Made with Boar's Head Top Round Pastrami -- hand-trimmed, rich, and smoky -- it was layered generously and coated with spices that hit all the right notes. The meat had that perfect deli texture, tender yet hearty.. They clearly take pride in what they serve, and it shows in every bite. What makes New College Hill Market even more special is the atmosphere. It's that kind of neighborhood shop where the cashier greets regulars by name, and even if you're new, you feel like you belong. I couldn't wait to sink my teeth into this sandwich! But when I took a bite, all I could taste was salt?! I'm not sure if the steak was over seasoned or the Swiss cheese made it salty from being cooked, but I've never had that happen when making a sandwich at home. Since there's no place to eat it at the store, we took it home and tried adding more lettuce and avocado to offset the saltiness, but even that didn't help. By the end of the day, I couldn't get my ring off my finger! It was swollen from the amount of salt in the sandwich because that's the only thing I ate. I drank lots of water, but I became bloated. My guy had this one. It was salty, but it didn't overpower my tastebuds or the sandwich. I only took a bite to try. 4/5 While jalapeño peppers and pepperoncini are sour, spicy and salty, the meat shouldn't be overwhelmingly salty too then the whole sandwich wouldn't be pleasant to eat. There needs to be something bland to balance it. Now in this steak sandwich, I didn't even add jalapeños or pepperoncini. I only had pickles, onions, lettuce, tomatoes. Yet the salt cut through it all and hit me. I believe someone got overzealous with the salt shaker not realizing it was too much. Of course, the customer finds out after taking a bite! Though I think there should be some quality control in making sure it's done right. Maybe taste testing should be a thing. We may come around again and give them another shot. We really enjoyed it the first time and we were hoping for a repeat, but disappointingly, it didn't go as planned.

The walls are covered with San Francisco sports memorabilia, which gives the place some character. There were at least five employees working behind the counter, all moving efficiently and cranking out multiple sandwiches at once. They clearly have their process dialed in. We ordered the S1 with avocado, salami, and cheddar instead of Swiss, loaded with all the toppings. The salami was thick cut and high quality. I was surprised when they put it in the oven, but it ended up being one of the best parts of the sandwich. Everything came together really well. We also ordered the S6 hot pastrami with extra meat and extra cheese. It was hot, melty, and packed with flavor. Easily the best hot pastrami sub I've had.
