Bacon & Avocado Burger with Swiss Cheese and Fries

As much as I hate to admit it, it's pretty clear to me now that, despite how long they've been around, I actually didn't know nearly as much about Bullshead as I thought I did. Up until my visit here, I was always under the impression that they were an old school spot that primarily served up burgers along with a handful of non-burger dishes. So, in some ways, I was pretty spot on, but it'd also be more than fair to say I underestimated them by quite a bit as well! [[HIGHLIGHT]]Stepping inside, the look of Bullshead feels a little dated, but, as one of the oldest restaurants in West Portal, that came as no surprise.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] What did, though, is how extensive the menu is. Honestly, it might have the widest variety I've ever seen - nearly two dozen types that come with either a 1/3 or 1/2 pound patty made with ground beef, turkey, bison, or Beyond Meat (they also have a fish burger, portobello burger, and a veggie burger). However, in the event you want something else, they have plenty to offer - over a dozen different sandwiches (chicken, patty melts, reubens, BLT, club, etc.), fried chicken, steaks, ribs, fish & chips, seafood plates, a salad bar, and so much more! Since I had already planned on getting a burger before we even walked in, it didn't take me long to settle on what to get. As appealing as some of their offerings looked, I immediately settled on their AVOCADO & BACON BURGER with a 1/3 lb beef patty ($19.45) as soon as I saw it. All in all, this was pretty solid. In particular, I loved how generous they were with the bacon, the Swiss cheese I added (+$1) tasted so good, and the patty was quite juicy. Plus, I liked that the avocado and veggies were so fresh! That said, the bun was just okay (kind of dry) and the fries were rather starchy/chalky and not all that crispy. While part of me is pretty tempted to try their ribeye and NY steak that folks seem to be so high on, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't also scared to, given how my burger was so overcooked. Besides, considering how you can get a decent burger with so many options, as well as fries, for about $20, it almost feels like a deal these days. Calibur down the street would still be my go-to spot for a burger around here, but there's no question Bullshead is where to go if you want more options. THREE AND A HALF STARS rounded up.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]Old school burger and steak joint located near the West Portal Metro Station.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Grill located at the front of the restaurant, brick and wood interior with sports memorabilia on the walls.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Check out the M-F burger, fries and beer or drink special. Numerous burger and meat items, beef or bison, 1/3 or 1/2 pound burgers, various burger and vegetarian options. Many of the diners are loyal long time customers. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Charming restaurant, good service, and good food.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Parking can be a challenge - white drop off zone in front.

We came to Bullshead for dinner due to a friend's recommendation, as a large party of 9. Even though we came 40 minutes before closing, we were served with utmost care and they did not kick us out even though we stayed almost an hour past closing. I commend the restaurant for great service and accommodating our multiple requests. That said, the food was mixed. I did appreciate the healthier bison burgers, which were very large, but the burger itself was more plain with a soft untoasted bun, and was more no frills despite the higher price tag. The curly fries were tasty though, and the salad bar (which can be added to an entree for $7.50) came with a fairly extensive selection of things. The salad bar was running low on items though since it was the end of the day. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The interior of the restaurant was cozy, and the restaurant is really not that big.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Parking is street only and can get tricky, but the restaurant is also just outside the West Portal Muni station so you can easily take public transit in. Overall, the service and salad bar were great, but I was a bit underwhelmed with the burgers.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]A great divey burger joint.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Not the type of a place I frequent but it's been in the neighborhood forever and a friend said the burgers are the best. So I tried it and friends... it really was. Not too greasy but greasy enough. IYKYK. I just got the regular burger with sweet potatoe fries. So good! Def be back, esp after a night of drinking!

Snack craving satisfied! Out and about we wanted to share a cheese burger. Stopped in The Bullshead Restaurant on Ulloa and West Portal Avenue near the West Portal Tunnel. We chose to split a half pound cheddar cheese burger and fries. Ordered medium with the pickles, tomato slices and lettuce on the side. We had an iced tea and a root beer. Our order was grilled to perfection in a few minutes! There is a nice salad bar, a nice option for a healthy choice.

So glad to finally try this spot! I've been walking by for months and finally found the night to try. First of all - everyone who we interacted with was so friendly and service was incredibly fast. They were so kind helping us with a high chair. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The vibes are old school and I loved it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Didn't get a chance to dive into the salad bar but will next time. I had the garlic burger which was perfectly cooked and delicious, my wife had a cheeseburger. We also got a burger for our daughter off the kids menu. 10/10 will be back again

Doesn't look like much on the outside or maybe even the inside, basic is an understatement. If all you care about is aesthetics go somewhere else. If you want a fine piece of meat, great service and a superb deal, WELCOME TO BULLSHEAD!! I won't bore you with specifics but the ribeyes are great, the salad bar is an unbeatable deal and service is fast!! When I am in the area. I will be sure to check this place out again.

Craving a steak so stopped by Bullshead (3rd visit). Saturday night and we got in right before it filled up. Ordered a ribeye medium rare, salad bar, baked potato, and a side of mushrooms. Spouse ordered a 1/3 lb bison blue cheese and mozzarella burger with a side of fries. Highlights: the steak had a beautiful sear on it and was perfectly cooked; the baked potato was also perfectly soft/fluffy; perfect cook on the burger which had great flavor; love me a salad bar! Downsides: no seasoning on the mushrooms; the steak was under-seasoned; the fries were very sad. Overall a solid 4 and will return.

Great food and great service! We got the chuck burger with grilled onions and the avocado bacon burger. The food came out quickly and it was very tasty. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The place has an old-school vibe, which adds to the charm- you just know the food is going to be good.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]

Good Reuben, but [[HIGHLIGHT]]old ugly atmosphere and customers[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]]. Grace was not there. Servers had no personality. Did not leave a tip.

Western Turkey Burger w no Bacon & Sweet Potato Fries
    Linda T.

You can tell this is a neighborhood spot. Many locals come here to have a reasonably priced meal. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It wasn't too loud and the service was good but slower when busy.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] We waited for about 10 minutes before we were seated. My husband said the turkey burger was good and that he would return for it... we are in search of the best turkey burger in SF. The sweet potato fries were amazing! Nice and crispy! My steak was juicy and cook was perfect. The only thing was that it wasn't seasoned. I salted my food and it was fine. I also love the salad bar. It offered a variety!

The quality is always on point (you get what you pay for) and the process is easy to preorder. The main thing to plan for is the long wait in line to pick up your preorder. In prior years, I've usually picked up on Christmas Eve and the wait can exceed 90 mins to 2 hours depending on when you arrive - this is the case even when you doorbust at opening time. This year, we picked up on the 23rd and arrived around opening time, and it only took 30 minutes. There are also very high quality pantry goods to peruse and purchase, including pasta, mustards, spices, tinned goods, etc. Onto the meat: I preordered late this year so got 21 day aged prime rib roast (would usually aim for 45+ days), but honestly it was hard to tell the difference. I ordered the roast pre seasoned, cradled and tied for ease and it was very high quality, easy to cook and delicious. Shoutout to the very friendly and hardworking staff at Olivier's - I see yall fighting for your lives trying to control that line every year (lol). Thank you for your service!

I have neuropathy and walk with a cane, a situation the afternoon staff graciously accommodated, escorting me upstairs in the elevator and allowing me to elevate my feet on a chair. My friend and I enjoyed our leisurely "big splurge" afternoon, with drinks and delicious lobster. When the shift apparently changed, a different employee (the manager?) came to the table, pulled the chair out from under my feet and said it was against restaurant policy to allow this. He was quite brusque. (It's salient to note we were practically the only people in this quite large restaurant, with miles of empty tables around us.) This effectively ended my visit as my feet would soon be numb. My friend had left a bit earlier, so I gathered my briefcase, coat and purse and made my way to the elevator. The wait staff looked on. Nobody offered a hand. A couple of days later I called management and let them know what happened. They said someone would follow up. Nobody did.

In order to actually secure a reservation, I had to book a year in advance. So, if you want to dine here, you must plan and commit to dining here far in advance. As you'd expect for a place with such a name, the vibe is very old school SF. Dark colors and lighting with lots of wood paneling. I'd kind of be disappointed if it didn't have such an old timey feel to it. We ordered a couple of drinks at a table that opened up by the bar, as we were quite early for our reservation. I ordered a lemon drop and the hubby went with a Moscow mule. The lemon drop was tasty (my current go to cocktail), and they also give you the shaker with the extra. Very nice way to start. We were seated at a two top in one of the seemingly endless number of dining rooms. Our server, Alberto, was incredible. He was warm and friendly and made our first visit to HOPR, extra special. Early on, I communicated to him that I was lactose intolerant, and he was so very helpful and knowledgeable. He immediately recommended subbing out the creamed spinach with sautéed spinach instead. And he assured me that there was no dairy on the salad. I so appreciate when severs can help me navigate around my lactose intolerance. Once again, as you'd expect, the menu options are only which prime rib cut you want. There's nothing else for entrees. There aren't even any appetizers. The accompaniments are standardized: salad, baked potato or mashed, creamed spinach, and Yorkshire pudding. They also start you out with fresh, hot bread, which was so great, helping us soak up the generously poured cocktails. I went with the English Cut, which was thinner, and my husband opted for the House of Prime Rib cut, a thicker cut. Everything was so excellent and flavorful. My husband even ate the salad, which is really remarkable. Dining at HOPR is an experience. They put on a show with your salad by adding ingredients to the salad bowl set over ice and spinning it around. Or when the chef carves the prime rib from one of many metal carving stations throughout the restaurant and then plates your dish right in front of you. Or when the sever cuts up the Yorkshire pudding or adds the toppings to the baked potato on a tray beside you. So much fun, and I very much appreciated this entertaining aspect of the dining experience. We had such a wonderful and memorable time at HOPR. I've already planned our trip for next year. It was worth the wait, and I'm looking forward to returning!

I wanted to take her to one more nice place before heading back home. Chef Tyler Florence's Miller & Lux next to the Chase Center in Mission Bay seemed like the best option. Parking was a bit challenging, as the spots across the street from Miller & Lux were five minute passenger loading only after 6pm. So I had to park in the stadium garage, which took about 10 minutes to find a spot and walk all the way back to the restaurant. From the moment we were escorted upstairs from the bar area, the service was top notch. Very congenial and accommodating. More importantly, my mom felt well-taken care of by the staff. They gave us our choice of a central booth or smaller table next to the expansive window overlooking Mission Bay. As we are both light eaters, we decided to share an order of the Filet Mignon and Tableside Caesar. After the soufflé-like bread puff and butter appetizer, the salad specialist rolled up his cart next to our table. He got busy mixing together mustard, Worcestershire sauce, shaved Parmesan, and several other ingredients then tossed it with neatly trimmed lettuce. Finally, he topped each salad with candied Meyer lemon, more shaved Parmesan, thin croutons and plump anchovies. There was also lemon zest dashed around the rim of the plate. I ate each leaf while instead of cutting it. Seemed easier that way. It had a nice balanced taste and was one of the better Caesar salads that I've had. The Filet Mignon was a bit rarer than the medium rare we requested. It had almost an Akami tuna like texture inside, which is not what you'd expect from beef. Possibly some aging broke it down to make it that smooth. They were very accommodating to take it back and fire it on the grill a little longer. It came back with the perfect amount of doneness. The horseradish sauce we added gave each bite a nice cream and spicy kick. We had an ode to the now extinct Orange Julius' signature flavor, orange and cream in the form of a soft serve sundae topped with a sugary macaroon and tart tangerines. It definitely brought back some memories. Thanks to the staff for making dinner for me and my mom a pleasant and enjoyable experience with their hospitality. We were greeted by the sommelier who opened up the wine bottle we brought and also made some recommendations. The complimentary pop over is still one of the most delicious treats ever! It was brought over with a classic butter and a flavored butter that were just to die for. Now of course, the caesar salad is still a must here!! Prepared tableside this is part show, part experience, and full flavor bomb. I love watching the dressing come together and the freshness of every ingredient being used. Just the aroma of the olive oil and parmesan cheese is amazing. The Caesar salad was dressed to perfection and perfectly crisp! Also got the oysters, because they were an absolute knock out the last time we were here. And still one of the best! It is quite literally the cleanest and freshest oyster I've ever had. Our waitress did an amazing job of explaining the whole menu in great detail. For dinner entree, we went with the ribeye, served with bone marrow to split between 2 with a side of the mac & cheese and accompanied with creamed horseradish to give the steak an extra kick. To be honest, that steak needs nothing extra. It is "melt in your mouth" tender and extremely flavor. I love the addition of the bone marrow because it enhances the richness of the steak. The mac & cheese is also very indulgent and rich. We were way too full for dessert so we went with a ball of the espresso gelato and were given complimentary carrot cake bites which were soooo gooodddd. I wish I wasn't full because they're pastry chef is the best! Hands down the place for a 5-star lux dining experience!
