Three stars is right on par with what I would give this place. My friends and I came here because it's a Chicago landmark, and I've never gone here before. It's very clean, and the guys that were working that night were pretty nice. We went inside to eat, and I liked the retro look and feel of the place. Unfortunately it also seemed a little metallic and cold. Within our group we had hotdogs, fries, burgers and chicken strips. Everything was alright, which was disappointing. The Chicago dog rules, and Superdawg Drive-In does it up right. This place is so cute, with its 1950's vibe ("Mr. Sandman" was playing when I went in), and car hop service. These all beef hotdogs are exclusive to the chain, and are done Chicago style, with mustard, piccalilli (relish), onion, chiles, dill pickle and a pickled tomatillo, all on a poppyseed bun. You can top that with their chili if you're inclined, though I like it as is. They also serve a polish sausage, burgers, a chicken sandwich, grilled cheese, fried fish sandwich and what they call a "supershrimp", plus a nice assortment of malts, shakes too thick to suck through a straw, sundaes and ice cream cones. I saw this on travel channel years ago and I finally decided to stop by here after work! It's a classic American drive-in, although the downtown destination is the original. Ordering the superdawg in the car was kind of fun! I never had a place where people brought the food to the car~ I ordered the superdawg and a milkshake, which was than enough. Fries were good, and the dog was a modified Chicago style with pickled green tomato, the neon green relish and all the goodies on top, Milk shake was excellent though! Extremely thick, creamy, and great to sip in some traffic. I must be honest, the place is pretty over hyped. I'm not going to say it's the best hot dog I had in Chicago, but it's one of the better ones. It's a great nod to '40's drive-in food and great food to eat on a casual day. read more

Neon green relish normally frightens me, however Superdawg had the color toned down and I barely noticed. I ate a Chicago dog and didn't freak out about the color, that is big for me. I really wanted to like this place - the old style drive in is so cute and it's always packed with people. Unfortunately, the food was supremely mediocre. Their signature Superdawg was pretty bland, and the hotdog was boiled. We also got the Whoopercheesie (2 Supercheesies on the same bun) and I was sorely disappointed. The description on the menu made it sound so good, but when it came out I realized that "all the trimmings" means that all you get on the burger itself are mustard and onions. There's a pickle and a few hot peppers thrown into the box, but that's not enough to perk up the overly bland flavor of the ground beef patty. Our waitress (they bring the food out to your car, and then come collect your tray when you're done) was in a really bad mood and seemed annoyed when she brought our tray. I cannot quibble about the food; it is some of the better "true" fast food in the city. However, I am upset over the service. I grew up in Chicago; Lincoln Park/Lakeview to be exact. There are many a time that my parents (who went on their first date to the original location) took my brothers and I to Superdawg. I truly have fond memories and love the tasty crinkle cut fries. For my daughter's birthday, we decided to pick her up from school and treat her to a birthday lunch. Having forgotten about the CASH ONLY policy (completely understanding why this policy exists), we did not bring enough cash. We were rudely reminded of the policy and treated as if we were ignorant fools for forgetting. No matter, they have an ATM. Alas, it costs $2.50 to use their ATM. We decided to leave and not patronize Superdawg this day. I am not sure if we will return. Your meal comes in a box with a hot dog, well done fries, a giant pickle spear, and pickled tomatoes....an adult sized happy meal!! This place is a landmark in Chicago where you see many different generation sitting together having a delicious meal while retelling the story of their first Superdawg experience. After three attempts at Superdawg's new location, I cannot recommend. They cannot seem to get the orders correct nor does the food taste right. Fries aren't supposed to be mushy, and the sandwiches should be hot when presented. I can't remain loyal to a brand when the quality of service drops this much. Like so many sibling restaurants, this one is nowhere near as good as the original in Chicago. Superdawg is as much about the shtick as the food and in this sense, the Dawg in Wheeling just doesn't cut it. There's something about the history and attitude of the original that makes it fun. Maybe it's the lack of history, or the "I'd rather be someplace else" attitude of the staff, but when it comes to the Wheeling location, I'd rather eat someplace else. The two times I've been there, the dogs and shakes were good, but in my opinion nothing special (you expect a great dog in Chicago). The fries were cold, soggy and not worth eating. The second time we were there, about a week ago, we just received a dog with fries and a limp dill pickle that was improperly packed, so the bun got soggy. Missing was the great Superdawg green tomato pickle. On top of that, service was Superdawg - Super - Slow! I always see cars here every weekend and figured that it must be good. I was WRONG. The prices were HIGH and the menu is tiny. We ordered 2 basic cheese burgers (that come with fries) and one small milk shake... Guess how much it cost.... SEVENTEEN DOLLARS (with tax)! And it wasn't even that good. WTF!? Seriously, 4 Dollars for a TINY milk shake and 6.5 Dollars each for single patty burgers with nothing on them... I can name about 20 restaurants that give you better value for your money. To top it all off, let me repeat myself and say... it wasn't even that good, if not borderline gross. I never eat at McDonald's but I'd rather eat at McDonald's. Visiting Superdawg is a fairly regular event for this family. We live closer to the location in Chicago itself, but the drive-thru option at Wheeling is a great convenience. The food never disappoints in both taste and value, and every family member has a favorite (I recommend the Whoopskidawg). Finally, the staff are consistently courteous and attentive. I came here two times, one to experience the drive in and another time inside. I know this is not the original Chi-town location, but when it first opened it seemed to keep Wheeling super busy. What I don't like is that the hours aren't as late as the Chicago one, why not? I mean suburbans like to eat too, and a very late night snack would sure be nice, but nope, if you want superdawg at midnight, you gotta drive to Chicago. That sucks. Now onto the experience of the whole thing, it has a vintage appeal, but it took them a while to bring our superdawgs out so that was a little annoying, so I kinda preferred coming inside and not eating in my car, plus it's a whole lot cleaner this way. So Mr. Superdawg for $5.50 you get your hot dog mixed in with french fries that are wiggly btw in a cute box. It's got charm, it's cute, but is this the best dog I've ever had no. Is it good and great for a hangover cure? Absolutely. It's plump and tasty like it should be. They frown upon ketchup just so you know. I do think it's a little pricey for what you get, I was hoping it be more around the $3.50 range but they do have groupons, wedeals, etc once in a while. So overall is this place worth it? Probably not. They should extend their hours because I feel like it would be a great late night munchies place. But would I make the drive just for lunch or dinner, probably not. Superdawg is a Chicago institution and loved by my family. I have been coming to Superdawg for over 20 years and I must say they have one of the best dawgs in town. When I visit Superdawg I always order a Superdawg and it comes with fries. They also have a great shake that is a must have! If you go don't ask for ketchup on your dawg because they won't do it (ketchup on a dawg is just wrong!). My kids love going on a summer day and ordering outside by the car. I bought a $10 for $20 Groupon to Superdawg and used it with my two sisters. We got there, parked, and realized we didn't know how to go about ordering. We had 3 options: 1) order from our car and eat in our car or take it to go; 2) order inside and eat there or take it to go; 3) order inside and eat outside at their little picnic area. We opted for choice 2. It was a bit busy when we got there, which was around lunchtime (not surprising). I informed the employee that I had a Groupon, which I pulled up on my iPhone and he just scanned the barcode with his Groupon iPhone app-pretty cool; I've never seen that happen. I wanted to order a Superburger, but for some reason ordered a Superdawg thinking I had said the former. All Superdawgs come with the following toppings unless otherwise specified: mustard, relish (the relish is a neon green color which reminded me of the green macaroni cheese pizza I had at Ian's in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, so the relish is dyed green??), onions, and hot peppers. Along with the Superdawg comes a side of crinkle fries, a spear of Claussen kosher dill pickle, and a pickle cut like a lemon wedge. We all ordered Superdawgs with small drinks and paid only $1.88 in cash since that's what they only accept. We paid exactly that amount, but the employee was a bit antsy and drummed his fingers on the counter as we dug for coins. The Superdawgs come in compact boxes along with the fries. When you first open it it up, the fries cover the Superdawg, so you'll have to eat some of the fries until you actually can grab the Superdawg, but even that is a chore, since it's so snug in the box as if it's comfortably placed and doesn't want to come out. The pickle spear is good, the lemon wedge like pickle was not. I enjoyed the hot peppers, which are super hot. I don't normally eat hotdogs ever, but this one was ok tasting. I could only eat half of it before I felt nauseous. The fries were ok; I seemed to have received the bottom of the bag fries seeing as how they were the ends of the potatoes and small. Their ketchup cups are a good size, so you only need to fill up one per person compared to McDonald's where 2-3 ketchup cups will suffice. Overall, it was a good experience minus the crying baby. The fast food joint is clean with washrooms. The food is ok. Maybe I'll come back to try the Superburger. read more

All of the decor inside and out was nostalgic to a time I'll only read about. I think places like this are making a comeback. We loved Superdawg for years. Today we went there for lunch and now for the second time, we were deeply disappointed. Besides neither of us feeling well after our meal, the quality is all but gone. We both had the same issues. First, completely wet buns so when you pick up the hotdog, the bun disintegrates and everything just fell apart into the box and on us. Second, we love the pineapple malteds when they used to be packed with pieces of pineapple; no more. Now they have very little fresh pineapple. The last time we were there a couple of months ago we experienced exactly the same issues and had hoped it was just a bad day but it wasnt. Very sad that an iconic drive-in has lost its interest in maintaining the quality that made it an icon in the first place. Won't be back and a very favorite memory is now gone. read more

I'm not a fan of their Chicago dog. It doesn't have the flavor of byrons (my personal fave) or portillos. I do like that they use green tomatoes on their dog which is more sour so it helps to cut the fAt of the hot dog. Their fries are mediocre also. I prefer skinny fries like McDonald's over the crinkle fatter fries. There is more crunch to potato ratio which is what I like in skinny fries. read more

Anything more than a burger or a hotdog and you shouldn't bother, but there are so many different types of burgers and dogs to choose from it shouldn't be a problem. First off, it's nice to see drive-ins proliferating again - Superdawg and Sonics on the chain side. If only Skips (Melrose Park - '60's) could come back! This Superdawg is a great copy of what they've got in the city plus a few enhancements - like a fairly roomy indoor area. They've also done a good job of replicating the food at the "new" Superdawg - it too is just like the food on Milwaukee in Chicago. Which to me translates as a large, but somewhat mediocre hot dog on a bed of overcooked crummy french fries all overpriced at $5 plus. And a great chocolate shake or malt. Car hops are cool. So if that's what you like - go for it. I'll stop there again every year or two for the nostalgia of the drive-in and the chocolate malt. But eating a hot dog and fries there is something more to be tolerated than enjoyed. read more

Oh, Superdawg, I had such high hopes for you!! My friend has been raving about this place...well, let me be specific--she's been raving about Superdawg. However, she goes to a different one. I can't see how she would love this one. The concept is cool. You order at your car, they bring it out, and you eat. Well, at least that's how it's supposed to go when they don't forget your order. We pulled up and ordered two Whoopskie dogs and an extra side of the Onion crisps. The people pull up next to us a few minutes later and ordered. We're still waiting...and waiting and waiting. So then, the waitress brings out their food. We are still waiting. About 10 minutes later, we hit the button and ask where our food is. The lady sounds confused and then tells us it'll be right out. Five minutes later, we were finally served. It was clear to us that they forgot about us, but didn't want to own up. Awesome. The food didn't even make up for the fact that we were waiting for well over 20 minutes for our food. The Whoopshie dog was just ok, and the fries were gross. The onions were pretty good, though. Most excellent! We were on our way to the Half Day Road Forest Preserve when we pulled over for lunch at this unexpected oasis. We rolled down the windows, popped open the sun roof and ordered two 'dawgs' and root beers. Besides the slight wait for the food, Superdawg was great. I have been meaning to go to the Chicago location for quite some time but the idea escapes me for whatever reason, but now I'm glad to check off at least one location off my list. The hot dog was delicious, the fries were uniquely crispy, the food comes in a stylish box, they bring it to you. What's not to love? The entire retro-theme ties it all together in a neat bow. I'm sorry if some people received moist/soggy hot dogs here; I'm also sorry they don't realize that hot dogs are boiled in water, and the buns are steamed (steam is water) so there will be moisture. Don't let the nay-sayers get you down, SDawg is sweet. They missed a star for the timely delivery of our order (and the pickled tomato), but overall I was extremely happy with my experience. The husband and I had coupons for a free Superdawg and any drink/shake. We received these coupons for signing up to be part of their e-mails. We decided to use them today. Growing up, I always went to their original location in Chicago. When the Wheeling location opened up about 5 years ago I was super excited. I admit since they opened this location it was my 3rd time coming. When we pulled, in their parking lot was not plowed at all and there were a decent amount of cars there. I didn't realize they have a drive-thru so we decided to get our food that way instead of going in. They didn't give us a hard time at all for using both of our free coupons. My husband wanted to go big or go home and ordered their Supercheesie on top of the Superdawg and our chocolate shakes. It took a LONG time to get our food including us having to park in a spot in their lot to wait. I'm thinking everything is made fresh and that is why it took awhile (We didn't mind the wait because we were hoping when we got home our parking spots were plowed and they were). If your in a hurry though you might get irritated by the wait. As soon as our food arrived to our car they apologized for the wait. When we arrived home to eat our food everything was hot. I forgot about their pickled tomatoes they provide as it's been awhile since I ate their food. My husband isn't fond of tomatoes and gave them to me. The pickled tomatoes tasted fresh, crisp, and had the perfect crunch to them. The hot dog tasted warm and fresh. The fries were crispy and soft all at the same time. My husband and I were surprised to see relish on his cheeseburger. I have never ordered a burger from here. He thought the relish made the burger too soggy. He offered me to try a bite and I was not a fan of the relish. I agreed that it did taste soggy. The chocolate shake was amazing....the right amount of chocolate and thickness. They have one of those generic ATMs that charges a 2.50 fee. So, $8 + $2.50 ATM fee = $10.50 for hot dog, fries and a coke for food that is simply AVERAGE.
