Looks like this place went through a rebrand. Soup dumplings are still solid. 4.5/5 House fried rice was blah. 2.5/5 Shredded pork with udon stir fry was also blah 2.5/5 Salted pepper pork chop was no salt and no pepper. They don't know how to make it here. 1/5
Cuisine: 7 Service: 3 Decor: 5 Value: 7 Overall: 5 This restaurant has changed many names over time, but it still seems to be the same old place that serves below average Shanghainese food. The only thing they always did right was their soup dumplings. On my recent visit, my friends and I really wanted to see if the soup dumplings were still delicious. The answer is it's different, still decent, but definitely not what it was before. There is probably someone else at the helm making these dumplings. The main giveaway is the soup itself, both the pork, as well as the crab/pork, were not as rich or flavorful as it once was. Though we preferred the crab/pork. That's not necessarily a bad thing for some people since it' feels cleaner and lighter. However, I do miss that intense burst of umami from their previous version. As for the skin, the pork ones were surprisingly much thicker than the crab/pork, which were super thin. That seems odd since we only saw one chef making them. Both types were a little sticky, but not too bad. The filling was good, not too mushy or too firm. Overall a pretty well made soup dumpling. Unfortunately, the service was just very poor. Three of us were the only customers inside the restaurant other than one other table of two. They were already served, so you would think we would get some attention. Instead, I had to get up just so the two waiters would recognize us ready to order. When our waitress did come over, her face looked like she wanted nothing to do with her job. Then after I ordered the soup dumplings, I asked to hold onto a menu because we may get more. Two minutes later, our waitress came by and swiped the menu off the table without asking if we wanted more food, which I was going to order. That really didn't sit well with us and we simply decided we will finish rest of our meal elsewhere. I hope they hire better waitstaff because their soup dumplings are not good enough for me to overlook the treatment we received that day. It is simply not excusable. Therefore, you won't see me back for quite some time.
Decent spot for take out lunch. Prices are average and food is well made. Pick up is quick and staff is friendly. I've gotten their shredded pork with preserved cabbage which is tasty and filling. I've also gotten their fried tiny buns with pork which is also delicious, good for sharing.
Delicious food, quick service - perfect pit stop while in Chinatown. A go to for me! As an FYI only debit card/cash accepted for payment. Another FYI is rice is not included with dishes like beef and broccoli/General Tso's, etc.
The dumplings and buns were so juicy it was shocking. The fried rice was alright, but nothing to write home about and the pancake was really good with the beef. It had all the ingredients in a Peking ducking dish. The service was fast and efficient, everything I would ask for at a dim sum spot. I just went back and they are renovating the restaurant to look a little nicer. The food quality is still great and we just got the hits from last time. I think this is my favorite dim sum in NYC right now.
Pretty good dim sum and Chinese food! I wouldn't say these are life changing, but pretty average Chinese food. I will say definitely get the classic pork soup dumplings and pan friend pork buns, as they are great classics to have. The interior itself is a bit dated, but still pretty clean.
I always come here for the soup dumplings. Hole in the wall and bathroom is downstairs. I believe this place only takes cash and a charge to use credit cards..
Food was good overall. Only issue was finding a roach in our soup dumpling bowl. They were nice enough to switch it out for a new one right away but omg talk about heart attack! There is pleanty of seating. I would be scared to come back and find something else in my plate tbh. The peanut sauce dumplings were the beT choice. Everything else was ok.

So... I like flavorful dishes and I am ok with MSG once in a while and this is one of those restaurants where everything that we ordered were good... but I do think they have added a few pinches of MSG there. Even the bokchoy was so satisfying. Pork chop was tender, soup dumpling has a lot of soup and was palatable. The crab with shrimp and spinach dumpling had a pleasant presentation and tasted wonderful. I would go back here if I have a chance.
Food (5/5): Dishes we're solid and reasonably high quality especially for the prices. The squid and the soup dumplings were really delicious and enjoyable. Service (4/5): No issues with the service whereby they took our order quickly and food came out fast. Ambiance (4/5): Nice interior with a good amount of seating. We came as a group of 4 and the table had enough space. The restaurant looks like a classic authentic Chinese restaurant and overall the food was delicious.
A Chinatown classic spot... so good! We got soup dumplings and not a single one broke, which is always a sign of quality. I specifically came here so some of my friends could try dong po rou, which isn't the easiest dish to find, and Supreme does it well. The eggplant and salt-and-pepper fried fish were excellent as well. The only miss was the mouth-watering chicken, but hey I had low expectations to begin with ordering a Sichuan dish at a Shanghainese restaurant (general advice: don't do what we did). I'll look to try the wine chicken or wine sauce fish fillet next time.
My absolute favorite Shanghai restaurant in nyc. Everything is super affordable and I can inhale baskets after baskets of XLB here. I've had a few of their appetizers, and they all slap, especially the fried tiny buns and scallion pancakes. I really like their jajangmian too but it was lacking a bit of flavor the last time I ordered it. Hopefully it was just one instance. I'm not a fan of the red-ish lighting in there; I think they can use a facelift and get rid of the booths. The workers are usually pretty nice and good at their jobs. Iirc, they only accept cash.
Interesting interior with the colorful lights but lots of seating and no wait on a weekday dinner. Service was quick though they hovered around the table and we felt rushed to order. The crispy beef was on the sweeter side, dishes felt just okay to me. I think they do a lunch deal that is more affordable, which I'd recommend over coming for dinner like we did. read more

So... Came here after a long walk for some soup dumplings and it didn't disappoint. They are cash or debit only so make sure you have the right payment on hand before entering. There are a bunch of tables and bathrooms in the facility. I likes the pork soup dumplings a lot. They didn't break apart easily like other places and the soup stayed inside and was very delicious. We also got a rice cake stir fry and the mapo tofu. I didn't like the tofu that much only for the reason that it wasn't very spicy but otherwise I would come again! read more

Soup dumplings are still good. There was a time where they chase you if you don't provide enough tip. I love their shanghai jajamyeon but this time getting it after a few years, it was a bit different. It was way soupy instead of saucy. I poured out the what was supposed to be the sauce and you can see the consistency is like soup. This is still my go-to shanghai place though. read more

Came here on a Thursday evening as a group of 5 and there was ample seating. The servers are very attentive and quick. For apps, we got the Vegetarian Mock Duck, which is basically mushrooms and bamboo shoots wrapped in a tofu skin, and Wontons Szechuan Style, which isn't spicy at all + has a bit of peanut butter mixed in with the sauce, YUM! Caution, if you have food allergies!! A MUST get are their soup dumplings! We got one order of Crab Meat and two orders of Pork soup dumplings and they didn't disappoint! Admittedly, not the best I've had, but they're still decent. We also ordered their classic Pork Pan Fried Lo Mein Noodles, which comes with veggies mixed in as well. Overall, a yummy and comfortable meal. A classic spot for dinner. read more

Quick service, good soup dumplings. My son and i had 4 orders of soup dumplings and 1 pan fried and we were not able to finish everything The pan fried buns are massive. They're more like baos and not shen jian baos with thin skins. Prices are pretty reasonable and they had clean bathrooms. Cash only or debit card! read more
This is comfort food. I've been going here for many years, and this place has not changed, which is a good thing. We ordered Scallion Pancake w. Aromatic Beef, Soup Dumplings with Crab Meat and Pork, and Seafood Pan Fried Noodles. Everything was delicious. Part of me feels like I should try different menu items each time I visit, but I always crave the same dishes. Hopefully I can continue to visit this place for many more years. read more

Decent xlbs- the crab xlbs are one of the more flavorful ones found in the city. The meat filling could be slightly fattier imo. Skin is quite good when cooked fully (one of mine tasted slightly under but owner was unwilling to do anything). Pan fried buns also done well- perfect airy texture and bottom crisp, and plenty of juice inside. Singaporean noodles also had good curry flavor. Side note- the suggested tip amount is based on post tax. Surprisingly spacious restaurant, and quite clean compared to the other Shanghainese establishments. read more
stopped by for a quick dinner and I felt the dishes were more of a Chinese takeout than Shanghainese style. The food was more on the oily and bland side for me. Hot and sour soup was def more sour than balance of hot and sour There were a lot of patrons in the restaurant but only 2 waitresses with some attitude. Felt we were rushed to place our order and when our dishes came out, they kept hovering around for us to ask for the bill. Overall, I'd probably not return. read more

I feel like it's hard for restaurants to get soup dumplings right. I think if you're craving soup dumplings in particular, this is a great rec!! The soup dumplings here don't taste frozen, and the wrappers aren't hardened from sitting out too long (iykyk). The filling soup was super delicious and soul warming. You can skip the mapo tofu (slightly lacks flavor). read more

The soup dumplings were pretty good and I also thoroughly enjoyed the pan fried noodles but the feeling I had afterwards left my mouth dry as a desert. The sauce in the noodles was pretty thick and oily but was still good nonetheless at the time of eating it. Service was good and the staff were there when you needed them. Ambiance was busy for the time we were there and was a much different crowd than what we were expecting. read more

One of the best soup dumpling places in NYC- has been consistent since my childhood to now (after trying other soup dumpling places too)! Thin wrapping, soup filling, and moist flavorful pork. The fried mini buns are equally delicious- thicker dough (as it is a bun), crispy bottom, moist inside. Inside has soup and flavorful pork. Good bao to pork ratio. All the other dishes like noodles, rice cakes, scallion pancakes are delicious as well. Service is standard, quick, and nice. Ambience is casual, can bring yourself, date, friends, or family here! Overall, my go-to-spot for affordable and delicious Shanghainese meal! read more

Came with a friend on a rainy day and this is the absolute perfect soul food on a Sunday! I was craving some Chinese noodles and soup dumplings and now I know my go to spot Service here is on top of it and quick! We ordered everything at once and our food came within 5 minutes. We were also constantly getting our waters refilled which was key and perfect!! The soup dumplings were so brothy and had the perfect levels of meat to soup!! The pork buns are still making my mouth watery literally a dream - perfectly chewy and the pork inside was sweet. I added chili oil for a boost of spice. Finally the lo mein really hit the spot - big fan of classic chicken lo mein and this really took me home 10/10 recommend and will come back BUT note that this establishment is cash only so make sure you come prepared read more

Idk how to start. Like I've been going here for years even with the change in management or restaurant name. The XLB's are always consistent and I stg the past two days I've gone have been the best they've ever tasted. I hate that I can't find amazing XLB's in Houston... not even in Bellaire area. But everytime I'm visiting the city, this is the place to go. Much better than Joe's Shanghai. I said what I said. read more

I realized walking around Chinatown around 930 pm looking for dinner can be quite difficult. All the good places I know are already closed. All the ones you think are open won't let you sit down because they are about to close. After walking around a few blocks following the inaccurate store hours in Google maps, we were lucky enough to find Supreme Restaurant. I immediately noticed the soup dumplings and obviously had to order them. I also noticed the little steam buns and the scallion pancakes with aromatic beef but was afraid of over ordering so only got the later. We also ordered the classic pan fried noodles as well. The scallion pancake was by far my favorite. That flaky crispy pancake was perfect. It was warm on the outside and had a chilly filling of beef with veggie and hoisin sauce. The soup dumplings were pretty good as well. They didn't stand out from any of the greats but were delicious nonetheless. The pan fried noodles were the weakest link here. The sauce was great but the noodles were too thick. Maybe I just prefer the thinner egg noodle. We almost had an issue with paying for the bill as it's cash and debit card only but thankfully they take Venmo! read more

Always has been and still is CASH ONLY. When in chinatown always have cash.
Do they offer indoor dinning?
Yes they offer indoor dining and outdoor dining. I go there every week for take out frozen crab meat dumplings.
Anyone know if they have gluten free options or if they are made with rice flour/paper?
I don't think offer gluten-free, sadly.
Who knows if and when Shanghai Cafe is reopening?
