This shave ice spot is in the same shopping center as Foodland. Perfect place to stop for a refreshing, cool snack. Adding 5 stars for the lovely your girl that served us our snow. She was all by herself making Hawaiian snows for us working hard. We arrived about 40 mins before closing. She didn't rush us out and we finished a few minutes after closing. We thought the Hawaiian snow was flavorful. I had pog, mango and orange dream cycle. The fresh flavors and I added haupia ice cream on the bottom. We will be back.

[[HIGHLIGHT]]The cutest little shaved ice spot I've ever been to![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I went with the small size, but wow, it was huge--way more than I expected! The small is definitely big enough to share, so if you're with a friend or two, definitely try ordering two instead of one. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I decided to eat inside rather than outside, which turned out to be a smart choice. My ice lasted much longer than most because of it.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I can only imagine if I had stepped outside in that Hawaiian heat and humidity, my shaved ice would have melted in about two seconds! What really makes this place special is their flavors--they're all made with real sugar cane, and there's such a wide variety to choose from. I had the hardest time picking, but finally decided to make my own mix: tigers blood, coconut, and blue raspberry. It was the perfect combination of tropical sweetness and refreshing flavors! Another cool thing about their shaved ice is that you get to choose up to three flavors, so make sure you take full advantage of that and experiment with different combinations. You can create your perfect flavor profile, This place is definitely a must-try for anyone looking to cool off and indulge in a sweet, refreshing treat!

Overpriced melted ice... It was a huge disappointment when Surfing Monkey was the first shave ice spot we got on our trip. Flavor: Common tropical flavors of all other places. I had guava, and lychee which were quite good. Guava: tangy and refreshing, lychee: sweet and a little mild. HOWEVER, hear me out guys... it was not a windy day, but after less than 3 mins after eating, it started to melt... a lot. It got worse from then, within 5-7 mins, I was holding a bowl of ice. In fact, everyone in my family had bowls of sweet water, not shave ice anymore. With the price they charge (higher than most places with similar portion; they also charge extra for sweet cream - condensed milk, while others give out for free), I was honestly disappointed. The only good thing about it is that they let you sample the syrup (just the syrup, no ice added) while most shave ice location in Maui don't allow you to sample.

When you're in the area and it's a really hot day after spending time on the beach, this place is a good spot to chill outside to cool yourself. The shave ice itself, it's texture is like typical shave ice places similar to Matsumoto's shave ice in the North Shore of Oahu and many others. It's little bit on the coarse type and not powdery enough for my personal taste. But some people prefer their shave ice that way, it's a matter of personal preference.

Perfect, hit the spot! I'd probably eat everything DF on their menu, from shave ice to dole whip and vegan coconut ice cream! The Small is comically large, so consider sharing if you're not too hungry. Perfect amount of syrup, plenty at the bottom. Smooth, soft ice. Near Foodland. Very quick service on a Saturday night.

Honestly crave this place from time to time and I'm so sad I don't live close by it. It's not just the shave over that makes this place great but the ice cream that the shave I've comes with 20/10!!!! The portions are huge but don't worry I'm sure you will consume it ALL. A sweet treat for sunny and non sunny days.

Ice cream would've been 5 stars, but because of the service I'm giving only one. Never would I have thought that a small ice cream establishment like this one would have issues with customer service. We walked in with just one couple ahead who was ordering, and upon waiting we were told that we'd be helped in a minute - fine, no problem waiting til they had been served. After they'd been served the cashier proceeded to discuss at length beach recommendations, while basically ignoring the fact that we were waiting to be served. I'm all for great customer service and talking about what great things to do in the island, but not at the expense of wasting other paying customers time. read more

Ehh kinda sketchy the wedding cake tasted like buttered popcorn jelly bean and the bubble gum tasted like alcohol....What!! any Why? The Ice cream in the bottom was ok kinda cheep on the snow cap and what's up with all the bug wings in the window!!! its not very sanitary it made me not want to eat my wedding cak... Meh. We found the ice here very coarse. As a result, the syrup ran through the ice quickly, and it became very watery. The flavor selections were very standard. This might be a decent westernized snow cone, but it isn't good shave ice. Check out one of the Ululani Shave Ice locations instead! read more

don't know if the tall blonde girl has been trained or if she is just watching the store. Worst shave ice in Kihei. My husband wouldn't let me take it back for refund. She didn't pack it at all so it was all mushy and a tiny bit of plain vanilla ice cream. No wonder the place at sugar beach was packed with a line a mile long! We paid $8 for junk. read more

Honestly my favorite shaved ice on the island. My husband and I tried a few and Surfing Monkey was a favorite, hands down. We really enjoyed their wedding cake flavor. The ice-cream bottom was supper yummy too! We hit the stand after having dinner at Sansei Sushi in the same plaza. It's a must try! read more

from our experience, surfing monkey is the best shave ice anywhere. we have tried many other places; none compare. surfing monkey is fluffy, like fresh powder snow. others have fine pieces of ice, like snow cones. paul mentions emulating matsumoto's on the oahu north shore. well, we tried matsumoto's last summer, and surfing monkey is much better. read more

Don't waist your time. Go find real shaved ice. Only come here if you want a crunchy snow cone. This is what I would expect from a snow cone from California not a shaved ice place in Hawaii. However, the shaved ice lady was very pleasant. read more

VERY disappointed. We ordered two shave ice with ice cream. The girl, who was otherwise very nice, gave us each a tiny scoop of ice cream and left about 1/3 of the ice without syrup. We went there because it was late and they were one of the few still open. Maybe the girl was new but she skimped on everything. You're better off going to Ululani's. If you have any white ice ( without syrup) they allow you to go to the front of the line to get it filled with syrup. read more

This is hands down the best ice cream i've ever hand and when I say i've had a lot of ice cream I mean it! The place is well kept and clean. The lady was very nice and served us quickly and efficiently. She was the only one working but she left no one waiting and served everyone with a smile. I had the coconut ice cream. Really disappointing. Been here before in the past and was really looking forward to it but tonight was a total fail. Not sure if it was the girl working or just the quality that has gone done but everything was a miss. From the inappropriately dressed high school girl hanging out with with her scummy boyfriend and smoking right next to the stand, to the crunchy/snow cone textured ice with no flavor until the bottom it was just a real let down :/. The hours say they are open to 9pm but she closed the stand down at 8:20 cause all her friends were hanging out waiting to meet up. read more

My family recently returned from Maui and we had a wonderful time. Part of that experience was the people living in Maui. One night after dinner we decided to go out for Shave Ice and that is where we met Sonny. He was so kind and friendly to our Grandson. He even taught him a little fist bump. I didn't even get to try the shaved ice because the place was closed 25 minutes prior to their posted closing time. The open sign was on and the doors were opened. When I walked inside there was a female worker with glasses that had her headphones in and was on her phone. As I approached the counter, she looked around and proceeded to give me a blank stare, not saying anything until I asked if the store was closed. She said it was and I walked out confused as the closing time said 9 pm. The entire encounter was awkward and rude on her part. Will not be returning. read more

Nice Argentinian gal served us as we came here for our last item off my wife's to-do list which was trying the local flavored shaved ice. I have to say that she shave Ice ( watermelon and mango combo) is very good. I subtracted a star because the working was not very personable and made us feel bad for have eaten at the neighboring Indian food restaurant and having left overs. Apparently she hates the smell of curry. Personally I think she could have saved her comments and simply smiled and made what we came in for. History

Established in 2008.

After many years working a 9-5, Paul was ready to tackle a new challenge -- opening a shave ice stand and making it the best shave ice on Maui. In 2008, the first Surfing Monkey Shave Ice shack opened in Kihei and soon became the most popular shave ice stand on the island, selling the softest ice and using locally sourced raw sugar cane syrup. Nearly ten years later, Paul is making his own all-natural flavors using fruit purees with no added color or artificial flavoring (including an exclusive coffee flavor made with 100% Kona coffee) and has expanded to multiple locations across the island, all while maintaining his mission to make and serve the best shave ice on Maui. Surfing Monkey Shave Ice is proud to be a family-run business with an added emphasis on aloha to all of our customers and providing Maui's best shave ice. Meet the Business Owner: Paul D.

In 1997, Paul Davies, owner of Surfing Monkey Shave Ice, packed up his life in London and headed to Hawaii to spread roots. On that first trip to Honolulu, Paul was taken to the North Shore of Oahu to try the world famous Matsumoto's Shave Ice, and he could not believe how soft the ice was and how good it tasted. After moving to Maui a few years later, and now the proud father of three, every time Paul went out with the kids he could never find shave ice as good as Matsumoto's. All the shave ice tasted like a snow cone -- crunchy with not much flavor and watered down.

At one point, my child was touching some delicate items, and before I even noticed, a staff member gently and politely reminded her to be careful. I was actually grateful for the correction because I could've been held responsible for the demages done. It truly takes a village to help raise children, and I appreciated how she handled the situation with patience and kindness rather than frustration. Mahalo to this wonderful lady working her. The Caesar Salad is about as good as they get, but I really, really like the Maui Greek Salad. With at least four people we start with the Seafood Tower, but find it just too big for two of us. Other than that the Kalua Pig Pot Stickers, Charred Octopus, Crab Cakes and Blackened Ahi are the starters I rotate through. For my Main, I am less eclectic. I have a hard time getting away from the Diver Scallops and Scampi. I have tried other dishes, the Abalone, Kona Lobster and Ribeye (I know, I know, who orders steak in a seafood restaurant), but I keep coming back to. For Dessert, I am also in a rut, but I love desserts they set on fire and in this case it is Bananas Foster. I do sneak bites off my DW's Creme Brulee, as does off my BF. The service is terrific, attentive without being intrusive. I used to joke about the Chicago store that if you knocked a spoon off the table someone would catch it before it hit the floor. He vanished after the big ticket part of the meal (the 82$ lamb) and mentioned a comped panna cotta for our anniversary after we'd ordered a paid desert. Oops we owe you that next time (but you'll take our money today) Our food runner was great! Super upbeat, always with a smile. Bar area was relatively quiet until it wasn't. We wouldn't spend $350 this way again but would sit at the bar for sashimi and bounce.
