    Chu toro & Spanish Mackerel

I've driven by Sushi 101 hundreds of times and finally ate there recently. We ordered the following: Chicken & Mixed tempura dinner that came with California roll: The teriyaki sauce was perfect for me and the tempura was made well. Sushi a ala carte: Chu toro, hamachi, unagi, saba, Spanish Mackeral and Maitake mushroom; They make the sushi rice just the way I like it which makes the difference between good and bad sushi for me. The decor can probably use an upgrade, but I enjoy eating where it's quiet. The service was great as well.

Upon entering, you feel a sense of traveling to Japan. The ambiance feels like you're at a very traditional Japanese restaurant. It is an excellent place to bring a date. The music and lighting set the mood. The host/server greets you upon entry. He was very hospitable and tended to our every need. Brought water before us asking. Cleared menus but kept them close. Explained the happy hour menu. The food was delicious. The sushi was fresh. The rolls were well made. Overall, it was a great dining experience.

On a Friday night when my nanny is away I took my son here for a date. We ordered wagyu sushi that my son wanted seconds... and he saved the one piece of uneaten sesame chicken for lunch. I ordered the soft shell crab appetizer, hamachi sashimi and spicy mayo scallop sushi. Everything is perfect and I am glad to have taken my son to this hidden gem in Studio City. Seriously, Casper is harder to please than your average foodie; he ate everything.

Sushi 101 has been a standard for me since before 1990 and is still my go-to for a fantastic meal and a Saporro. A local favorite for NoHo residents and celebrities alike. I recommend immensely.

Local, small cozy, neighborhood Sushi eatery run by a Japanese Sushi chef. Friday night and the place is hopping. Yes, you can order the California-ized rolls w/ county fair triumvirate of sriracha, mayonnaise, "eel sauce", but this chef can do excellent, traditional Èdomaè Nigiri (Eh doh mah eh Nee ghee ree ) Sushi & classic Sashimi. 1) Suzuki/sea bass Sashimi: White meat marked by reddish pink & white stripes. Soft, lush velvety texture along w/ sweet ocean, meaty minerality. Dressed w/ acidic Ponzu sauce which acts as a gastrique combining Shōyu/soy sauce, Japanese rice vinegar, touch of lemon. 2) Hiramè/halibut Sashimi: Slices of alabaster colored, fIne white fish. Texture is soft yet firm. Refreshing light taste of the sea. In Ponzu sauce, scattering of fine chiffonade of green onion. Sliced grape tomato. Yuzu Koshō which is a fine paste of Yuzu/Japanese citrus zest, green chiles adding piquant, spicy, citrus aromatics to enliven the clean tasting Hiramè. 3) Fried Albacore seems Thai influenced. Tossed in a light sweet sour sauce w/ greens on a bed of deep fried mai fun puffed rice noodles looking like styrofoam packing squiggles. All the surrounding flavours are right, but the albacore nuggets themselves are overfried so the meat ends up dry, hard, tasteless. 4) Hon Maguro/bluefin tuna Sashimi Sampler: a) Aka Mi is near the shoulder. Dark, blood red like a good beef steak and probably aged 2-3 days to increase its meaty, blood rich Umami as well as adding a lush velvety, melt in your mouth texture. b) Aburi/seared Aka Mi so the outer layer is cooked for more of a chaw in contrast to the softer interior. Garnished w/ a chiffonade of green onion. c) Chū Toro is closer to the belly. Semi fatty compared to Ōtoro which can be almost dripping in good fish fattiness. The Chū Toro fat melts close to body temperature for full mouth richness that subtly increases as one chews. All above garnished w/ thin strands of Daikon/Japanese radish and Shiso/Japanese "basil" leaf which is meant to be eaten as a healthful addition to aid in digestion & fibre to cleanse the digestive tract to possibly prevent cancer. Sushi 101 is a fine addition for people living in the Southeast San Fernando Valley. There is a warm buzz of satisfied customers. 4 stars

I'll start with the few negatives because, honestly, there weren't many. With how popular this place has become and the number of regulars that come in every day, parking can be a little difficult. Thankfully, they have someone outside helping direct cars and navigate the parking situation, which definitely makes things easier. The interior is also a little outdated and could use some updating, but once the food comes out, you quickly forget about it. Now for the good stuff. From the moment we walked in, the entire staff was incredibly friendly, welcoming, and attentive. Great service always makes a difference, and the staff here really added to the overall experience. We ordered the Spicy Tuna Rice Cake, Crispy Shrimp Roll, Mula Roll, and KB4 Roll, and every single one was a hit. Spicy Tuna Rice Cake -- Easily one of the highlights of the meal and an absolute MUST TRY. You get four pieces of crispy rice that have the perfect crunch on the outside while still being light and fluffy inside. They're topped with avocado and some of the best spicy tuna I've ever had. The tuna was incredibly fresh, flavorful, and creamy. I could've ordered another plate of these by themselves. Crispy Shrimp Roll -- Another must-try. This roll has so much flavor and the perfect amount of crunch without being overwhelming. At only $10, it's honestly hard to pass up. I can definitely see myself ordering this every time I come back. Mula Roll -- This one is definitely on the pricier side at $28, but it's worth it. It's loaded with premium, incredibly fresh fish, including unagi and tuna, along with avocado and savory sauces. The fish was buttery and fresh, with a subtle kick of heat that brought everything together. Definitely a roll for anyone who likes richer, more flavorful sushi. KB4 Roll -- A great combination of spicy tuna, yellowtail, albacore, and salmon. What I really liked was that the fish was served chunky rather than finely minced, so you could actually appreciate the different textures and flavors. The fish was incredibly fresh and practically melted in your mouth. Absolutely delicious. Overall, Chiba is a hidden gem in the Valley and easily one of the better sushi spots I've tried. Between the quality of the fish, the flavors, the portions, and the friendly service, it's a place I'll definitely be coming back to. Food: 10/10 Service: 10/10 Overall: 10/10 -- Highly recommend! If you're in the Valley and looking for a new sushi spot, put Chiba on your list. You won't regret it.

Service is great, very attentive servers kept our waters full and came by often. The sushi itself is very good, we ordered several rolls with a few standing over the rest. The carwash roll was absolutely delectable, not on the menu, probably my favorite of the night. The crunchy shrimp handroll was amazing. We also ordered a shrimp tempura cut roll that comes with a unique sauce that stole the show. Overall great quality sushi, we were very happy with all our choices. The dedicated parking lot is a decent size, no trouble finding parking. Check this place out if you're in the area and in the mood for good sushi!

The standout was the Spicy Shrimp Wontons, which featured delicate, silky, the shrimp filling was perfectly seasoned, and the spicy chili sauce had just the right balance of heat, umami, and a subtle hint of sweetness, making each bite addictive. They were so good that I immediately ordered another serving to go. Honestly, I preferred these over Din Tai Fung's. The OG Ramen was deeply comforting and satisfying, with a rich, flavorful broth and perfectly cooked noodles that held up well from start to finish. We also tried the takoyaki, which had a lightly crisp exterior, a soft, creamy center, and plenty of savory flavor, finished with classic toppings like bonito flakes, mayonnaise, and takoyaki sauce, tying all flavors together. The service was warm and attentive, making the entire experience. Seated in a rather interesting part of North Hollywood, the summer heat did not deter us from eating here, as the smell immediately brought my worries elsewhere. A vast majority of the food here was fantastic, and the only reason I was going to opt for 4 stars was the takoyaki had quite a tiny portion in the actual dough ball- despite the actual breading so soft and fluffy, it was like the most delightfully extravagant packaging for something that was a bit of a let down. Though, much to the credit of our waiter she understood and offered to swap it out for another appetizer, which probably deserves the vast majority of the praise here. The vegetarian dumplings we ordered were legitmately some of the best dumplings I've had period. From the vegan mayo to the best gentle heat I've ever had the experience I've eating. Just hot enough for a brief moment with delightful heat throughout. The chicken skewers we had and the calamari were solid and with a perfectly paired Thai Iced Tea, I only hope to visit again and drown in dumplings. Cheers!

Making a reservation was very easy, and everything went smoothly from start to finish. As soon as we arrived, we were greeted right away and seated promptly. The ambiance was warm and inviting. The restaurant is a bit dimly lit, but it really adds to the cozy and upscale atmosphere. One thing I immediately noticed was how clean all of the grills were. We chose the AYCE option (around $55 per person), and the pricing for kids was very reasonable. Our 5-year-old was charged a reduced rate, while our 3-year-old ate free, which was a nice bonus for families. The selection of meats was excellent, with plenty of options to choose from. They do have a 90-minute dining limit and a surcharge for excessive leftovers, but that wasn't an issue for us because everything was delicious. The appetizer selection was surprisingly large. We enjoyed the beef fried rice, noodles, a sushi roll, crispy tofu, chicken karaage, and shiitake mushrooms. The crispy tofu turned out to be spicier than we expected, so just keep that in mind if ordering for kids. However, spice lovers will probably enjoy it! The chicken karaage was a huge hit with the kids, especially with the spicy mayo on the side. The shiitake mushrooms were also incredibly flavorful and well-seasoned. We also ordered crispy rice spicy tuna, we loved it too! What really stood out was the service. Every server we encountered was kind, attentive, and genuinely friendly. Instead of simply dropping off food and walking away, they took time to check in, ask how we were doing, and connect with us. That personal touch made the experience feel special. We only ordered water since we had already had plenty of drinks earlier in the day, but they offer a variety of beverages as well. For dessert, we tried the mochi ice cream special--two for $5--which was a fantastic deal. In San Diego, it's common to pay around $5 for just one mochi ice cream, so we were pleasantly surprised. Overall, we had a wonderful experience and are so happy we chose Oku-Niku for my birthday celebration. Great food, excellent service, a family-friendly atmosphere, and a memorable dining experience. We'll definitely be back!
