We ordered the following: Chicken & Mixed tempura dinner that came with California roll: The teriyaki sauce was perfect for me and the tempura was made well. Sushi a ala carte: Chu toro, hamachi, unagi, saba, Spanish Mackeral and Maitake mushroom; They make the sushi rice just the way I like it which makes the difference between good and bad sushi for me. Upon entering, you feel a sense of traveling to Japan. The ambiance feels like you're at a very traditional Japanese restaurant. It is an excellent place to bring a date. Worst purchase ever. Spent over $200 on this order and had to throw 90% of the food away. It was better to be safe than sorry. Just disgusting and awful. Cannot believe how old and watery the fish tasted. Even the rice had a creamy taste to it. Unfortunately by the time the order was brought home, the restaurant had closed for the day already or else I would have taken it back. On a Friday night when my nanny is away I took my son here for a date. We ordered wagyu sushi that my son wanted seconds... and he saved the one piece of uneaten sesame chicken for lunch. Local, small cozy, neighborhood Sushi eatery run by a Japanese Sushi chef. Friday night and the place is hopping. Yes, you can order the California-ized rolls w/ county fair triumvirate of sriracha, mayonnaise, "eel sauce", but this chef can do excellent, traditional Èdomaè Nigiri (Eh doh mah eh Nee ghee ree ) Sushi & classic Sashimi. 1) Suzuki/sea bass Sashimi: White meat marked by reddish pink & white stripes. Soft, lush velvety texture along w/ sweet ocean, meaty minerality. Dressed w/ acidic Ponzu sauce which acts as a gastrique combining Shōyu/soy sauce, Japanese rice vinegar, touch of lemon. 2) Hiramè/halibut Sashimi: Slices of alabaster colored, fIne white fish. Texture is soft yet firm. Refreshing light taste of the sea. In Ponzu sauce, scattering of fine chiffonade of green onion. Sliced grape tomato. Yuzu Koshō which is a fine paste of Yuzu/Japanese citrus zest, green chiles adding piquant, spicy, citrus aromatics to enliven the clean tasting Hiramè. 3) Fried Albacore seems Thai influenced. Tossed in a light sweet sour sauce w/ greens on a bed of deep fried mai fun puffed rice noodles looking like styrofoam packing squiggles. All the surrounding flavours are right, but the albacore nuggets themselves are overfried so the meat ends up dry, hard, tasteless. 4) Hon Maguro/bluefin tuna Sashimi Sampler: a) Aka Mi is near the shoulder. Dark, blood red like a good beef steak and probably aged 2-3 days to increase its meaty, blood rich Umami as well as adding a lush velvety, melt in your mouth texture. b) Aburi/seared Aka Mi so the outer layer is cooked for more of a chaw in contrast to the softer interior. Garnished w/ a chiffonade of green onion. c) Chū Toro is closer to the belly. Semi fatty compared to Ōtoro which can be almost dripping in good fish fattiness. The Chū Toro fat melts close to body temperature for full mouth richness that subtly increases as one chews. All above garnished w/ thin strands of Daikon/Japanese radish and Shiso/Japanese "basil" leaf which is meant to be eaten as a healthful addition to aid in digestion & fibre to cleanse the digestive tract to possibly prevent cancer. I just went back to Sushi 101 in 19 years apart! Yes, they have "special of the day" menu still going on !!! Sushi & Sashimi are always Fresh & they offer other Japanese authentic specialties... even Soba or Ramen and They do "Monday Omakase Night" I just made a reservation for coming Monday! I have been to Sushi 101 at least 6 times in the past few years. Today, I decided to write them this review. Hope the chef or the business owner will read this and try to make certain changes on their food. This place is kind of hit or miss type of an establishment. Thru the years I have tried many different sushis and other Japanese dishes. It is NOT bad, but I have had better sushi in so many other places that can NOT be compared to this restaurant. I went there to pick up some food 2 weeks ago, and bring it home. I was disappointed. I ordered 2 orders of their spicy tuna roll sushi, and popcorn shrimp. Spicy tuna roll tasted bland, mediocre, salty and it just didn't taste like real tuna. It tasted like it was cooked tuna from a can. Just BLAND and very salty. Both of them. For 2 orders of spicy tuna roll, and 1 order of popcorn shrimp, price came out to be $24.09. And it wasn't even that good. Another thing I have noticed is that they roll the tuna rolls high up, not circle/round. Place is quaint, pretty, cozy, and lovely. Also clean with good service. They have a variety of different kinds of sushi and other dishes as well. I wish I could of given this place at least 4 stars, but because of the pricy, salty, bland, mediocre, so called tasteless cooked tuna from a can sushi rolls... it will be 3 stars for now. Might give them another try and see if they have improved to the better! I don't know what all the RAVE, is all about. People, try other places like Sushi House, Sushi Roku and other great sushi places then you will know the difference and what am I actually talking about. Until then enjoy your food at this place. I went their for a quick bite (like I only had 15 min to eat) on a Wed night a few weeks ago. Ordered their vegg tempura. OMG - it was super authentic. The vegg was cooked to perfection, soft/tender but still with some crunch and bite. The batter was light, crispy. But the most amazing part was the tempura dipping sauce, it was piping hot, and the best I have ever had. Then their ramen came out. The broth was so outta this world, stellar in fact. I ordered spicy miso. It was complex in flavor, spicy (just the right amount). It seriously hit all the right notes. The pork chasu was thick and a good texture (but a bit porky in flavor). The vegg was bean sprouts, bamboo and a few jalepeno slices. It came w a boiled egg but it was cooked thru (would prefer slightly runny like traditional Japanese restaurants). Service was stellar. I wanted more of their picked cabbage/cucumber, they came thru and also gave me some ginger. I can tell the chef really knows how to cook. Their ingredients are premium quality. He told me "the shrimp in the miso soup still has sand they didnt wash it good but it's ok" when the waitress came to ask how was the food I didnt want to say the sushi didnt taste good. but I just said "I'm sorry but the shrimp has a sand in it" waitress went to tell to the cheff. The food is good not saying anything about that I have been going there for over four years once in 2 weeks 3 weeks every time I go my bill is 120 to 180 dollars I went there with my wife again on 01/11/2023 I asked for spicy mayo and waiter told me he have to charge me extra for that common now I spend money here for over 4 years and to get charged for extra spicy mayo I think that's just going overboard it's not the money but I felt very uncomfortable the way they didn't care that I'm loyal customer and always tip the waiter . And I just want to reach out to the owner to tell him that I believe it's not right to loose customer over little bit of spicy mayo I have a lot of choices to choose from . Great food and service! To begin, the owner/chef was friendly and the decor was homey. I visited during their lunch hours and their lunch menu was a great value! I ordered the sushi and tempura combination and the food was fantastic overall. The tempura side contained 2 shrimps and a variety of veggies. All pieces were crispy and juicy. The food has gone downhill unfortunately. The last time we ordered the crispy rice, it went from one of the best to one of the worst. The rice was over-fried and the spicy tuna on top looked and tasted like cooked tuna from a can. Totally serious. Unbelievable.
