This place is so small; it only has 4 seats. I was excited to be able to get 2 seats! We ordered the premium sashimi and a tuna roll. The fish was very fresh and clean tasting. The staff is super friendly. It was a solid experience.

This review is based on a lunch take out and not dined in experience. I'm all about holes in the wall and neighborhood gems so when I saw this, I wanted to try. I got their sushi and sashimi lunch with salad. It was okay, nothing fancy. It was fresh so that's important. Not a fan of the scallop with hidden jalapeno touch. It was either to hide something or it was intentionally. Scallops should shine on its own sweetness or with something mild to essentuate it. Overall, I wish I had venture to try the deluxe dinner instead. For lunch, it was pretty pricey for the type of cuts.

My fave sushi in the city! Mainly a takeout spot with very limited seating. Clean inside with great staff. I've ordered to go and eaten inside. What I've tried- Sushi Premium: The best. Love that it cakes with uni and toro. The toro taku roll is unmatched! So fresh and great quality Miso Soup: A little inconsistent from time to time (sometimes under seasoned, sometimes perfectly umami). Love that it has tofu, seaweed AND tofu skin 3 Roll Combo: Spicy salmon, eel cucumber and salmon avocado. All good, toro taku still takes the cake for me! Can't recommend this place enough! Great quality, fast and always satisfies. It could be considered pricy but I think for the quality it's worth it! There's def lower grade sushi out there and for a lot more. Def try this spot out!

I had heard that this place had very limited seating, so I got an order for takeout to eat in the park. It took a little longer than I expected, but the the sushi preparation and fish were very high-quality! I only get 3 nigiri a la carte (sea bream, scallop, and spot prawn) since I wasn't that hungry. I really loved how thick and sweet the scallop was! And the spot prawn had a nice texture. Overall, I think it's worth the price point, and as far as takeout sushi goes, this is some of the most delicious I've had in this area!

Called for a pick up order for a sushi premium and brought it home all the way to Queens and the rice was still nice and Chewy and perfect for sushi. The sushi was high quality which validates their price point. I would definitely come back to dine in but they do fill up quickly since there is only seating for 4.

My first impression: Decent, but not my favorite. Sushi was slightly smaller compared to other sushi places that are selling similar sushi sets/prices. There was more rice than fish. I would give it another try but a different set (wasn't a fan of the toro taku roll).

Good food, and good service. Very small, but soooo good and fresh. No booze or desert just strait up Sushi. It's a little pricy for what you get, but the sushi is excellent. I would go for lunch again. Two people $70 with tip. The price and lack of alcoholic options keep it at 4 stars but the service, atmosphere, and food keep it at 4 stars.

The freshness of the fish is amazing and you can definitely tell the difference from the flavor that comes out. Although more expensive than your local sushi spot, it's nice to have occasionally when wanting quality over quantity. The spicy mayo which I typically drown my sushi in, is not really needed to due to the natural flavors of the fish. Highly recommended the Sushi Regular Special

I'm going to do my best to get through this review without mentioning my Japan trip, but it's going to take everything I have. I feel like the meme of the guy ready to explode from trying to keep his mouth shut, veins bludgeoning out of his neck and forehead. Oh you haven't been to Japan?????? Sushi 295 Mercer is the best Sushi I have had since my trip to......I mean Sushi 295 Mercer is legitimately the best sushi I have had in the United States of America. A friend, who has impeccable food taste, recommended it to me as he said it was his favorite sushi in NYC, but that it's "super lowkey" and "hasn't blown up yet." The cat has yet to be let out of the bag so to speak. Since there are only 4 seats for dine-in, I was JUICED when I got a res 3 days before as a budding love interest and I had made plans to grab food. "Oh yeah I got us a res at this sushi spot I've been dying to try, only 4 seats in the place tho!" I'm so cool and trendy Hehe haha :) Upon our initial walk by, we missed it as the sign is discrete so keep your eyes and ears up. Head on a swivel always. We walked in and were greeted by this cute Japanese lady, and she pointed to 2 seats at the sushi bar that were an arms distance away. This place truly is tiny, but authentic and cute without taking itself too seriously. Everything in here is functional, there is no added decor to try and impress. This is precisely what I loved about my time in Jap....I mean this is what I've read about Japan. It's all about functionality over there, and every good restaurant is essentially no frills. Everything and everyone serves a purpose, no ostentation for ostentation's sake. Or so I've read....... While sitting at the bar, the employees are cutting the fish right there in front of you, cranking out togo orders like the Vietnamese were cranking out heroin for Frank Lucas back in the late 60's. This spot is definitely more geared toward togo orders... I mean obviously. There are only 4 seats lmao. We started with a miso soup, and ordered the sushi for 2 which comes with 30 pieces of sushi. After a short argument on whether the items in a miso soup were called "fixings" or "fixins," which I obviously won but the aforementioned budding love interest could not admit defeat, our sushi arrived. It is true artistry here. The quality of fish is 2nd to none and I can only imagine it would remind someone of the best sushi that they had had on a trip to Japan.... Please watch the video I attached here, my goodness. I'm getting hungry just watching it back. Every bite literally melts in your mouth and the fish is as fresh as the Notre Dame head coaches fade for a national televised game. He's really fresh out the chair for those games lmaaooo. Not sure where they are getting their fish from or how it can be this much better than anywhere else I've been lol. The fatty tuna, the piece of charred salmon, and the eel were a 3 way tie for my favorite piece. The triple crown. I don't know how else to articulate how good this sushi was. I am at a loss for words for once. I will quite literally never order takeout sushi from anywhere else, as this place isn't even that expensive. I'd say it's relatively low priced for sushi in NYC. Y'all can keep Bondst, Sugar Fish, Sushi by M, Nobu, etc. I'm ROCKIN with Sushi 295 Mercer. Something special is going on here. Makes me want to book a Japan trip..................... Sushi and Sashimi Lunch.

I was quite excited to try this spot and made my way over for take-out lunch to enjoy at the park nearby. The restaurant is super tiny and intimate seating only 4 people. It seems like a lot of people just get take-out here, which I did as well. I came for the Sushi and Sashimi Lunch ($25.95), which included 7 sashimi, 4 nigiri, California roll, and a salad. It took about 5-10 minutes for my food to be prepared and they brought it outside to me once it was ready. The service was quick and friendly. As for the food itself, it was good but nothing better than something you might find at the Japanese grocery stores. As many others mentioned, the salad is often tossed and I can see why. They need to just not include it or replace with some seaweed salad or something. It's good and convenient if you're craving sushi to enjoy at Washington Square Park, but not enough for me to return sadly.

Super fresh and good quality fish!! I got takeout as well and it was super good and affordable for the quality of fish. The sushi rice they use is also a chefs kiss in terms of texture and flavor. Got the salmon sashimi salad and the toro scallion roll, both of which I highly recommend! The toro was super fresh and the scallion added a nice touch of freshness. The salmon was also buttery soft and the salad had a nice gingery dressing.

    - really lovely experience - ordered the 30 piece premium omakase set to share ($100) and added the sweet shrimp at the end ($8 per piece) highly recommend both - the pieces are slightly on the smaller side but the quality is fantastic and honestly a steal compared to other similar omakases - only 4 seats at the bar (2 seats outside) but takes reservations - will likely be my new take out place - very excited to do omakase picnics once the weather warms up a bit - hole in the wall - pleasant personable staff

The slices aren't thin, delicate, and melt-in-your-mouth as one usually gets in a sit down; they are extra thick, and I had to really bite down on some of the pieces. The rice was nicely seasoned and was cooked well + portions are also big to match those thiccccc salmon slices. To be honest, I was getting a little nauseated after 5 pieces, haha~ They were definitely delicious but I'd probably just eat 3 or 4 pieces and share with a friend! It was easy to text the number on the website and coordinate a pickup time, and the staff was friendly when I arrived. We walked into a stylish, energetic space with a menu designed around sharing, making it a good option for a casual dinner or group meal. The interior has a contemporary, lively feel with an open kitchen that adds energy to the room, and the seating is arranged to accommodate both small groups and larger parties comfortably. Instead of sticking strictly to traditional Japanese dishes, the menu mixes familiar flavors with more modern presentations, creating a dining experience that feels both approachable and exploratory. The standout item is the katsu, which is where the restaurant really shines. We ordered the pork loin and tenderloin versions and found the breading crisp while the meat stayed tender and juicy, the crust holding up well without becoming greasy. The mazemen is another highlight, with chewy noodles and a rich sauce that brought a lot of flavor without feeling too heavy, the sauce coating each strand evenly and the toppings adding layers of texture and depth. Beyond those, dishes like the butter scallops, corn ribs, and seafood options added variety and made it worth ordering multiple plates to share. The scallops were well seared with a buttery finish, and the corn ribs offered a smoky, slightly charred flavor that paired well with the richer dishes. The desserts are also a memorable part of the meal. The corn ice cream is one of the more unique items, with a sweet and savory flavor that sounds unusual but works surprisingly well, the sweetness of the corn balanced by a subtle savory note that kept it from feeling cloying. It fits the restaurant's overall approach of taking familiar ingredients and presenting them in a more unexpected way, and the creativity of the dessert menu feels consistent with the rest of the meal. Service and atmosphere add to the experience, with attentive staff and a lively dining room that feels suited for groups. The team checked in at the right moments and kept the pacing of the meal comfortable, and the open kitchen added a layer of engagement as we watched the dishes come together. Reservations can be difficult to get, especially during busy times, and the small plate format means the best experience comes from ordering several dishes rather than focusing on one entree. The variety across the menu encourages sharing, and the pacing of the meal works well for a longer, more social dinner. konban delivers a well-executed modern Japanese dining experience. While some of the more hyped dishes may not completely live up to expectations, the katsu, noodles, and seafood dishes make it a worthwhile visit. The combination of creativity, quality ingredients, and a lively atmosphere makes it a destination for exploring different flavors and dishes together rather than just ordering one signature item, offering a meal that feels both engaging and satisfying.

The ube tiramisu was free since we wrote a google review for the restaurant. Everything was delicious and the zucchini was surprisingly good as well. The pork was so tender. the ebi tempura were huge, and the mazemen was thankfully not spicy. However, the scallops could've been more tender and we we were all unimpressed with the ube tiramisu. Overall, I would come back and would definitely recommend konban! Get the corn ribs, zucchini, pork katsu, and corn ice cream! The wait times have gotten better over the years (probably because people are waiting for the restaurant next door), but the food and drinks here are still top-notch. Staff is always great, and they all work so efficiently. I am generally a fan of izakayas, but there are very few that offer plates that are designed to be shareable, and this is one of the reasons the food here is so enjoyable in a small group setting.
