I have eaten here several times, always for the conveyor sushi and have always enjoyed the visit, with a couple of the visits taking someone new to conveyor sushi. This was Thursday's snow day and few places were open and someone wanted to get out so out we went. As the conveyor was not on this day (makes sense given few people coming in) I had the chance to try the regular menu, which I was glad I did. I have seen quite a few times people get Bento boxes (not knowing what they were at the time) so I ordered one on this visit and I really liked it. I got the Hibachi chicken which came with a California roll, shrimp dumplings, crab rangoon, rice and the chicken stir fry. The dumplings here are very good, the rice and stir fry were cooked just right and the crab rangoon must have been good because I didn't get any (someone else ate it all). Also were a few pieces of tempura. I would definitely get this again. Service was excellent and pretty much always is. While the food is very good, not sure it's 5 star level but very worthy of the 4. read more

It needs to be noted that this place does do the conveyor belt sushi and the service is pretty decent. However two things in particular make me not want to check this place out anytime soon - their fried calamari - I was hoping was just dusted in corn starch, which I'm used to at Japanese restaurants, but was with this ridiculously hard oily breadcrumb coating. That and instead of a light ponzu sauce or something it came with said disgusting mayo sauce. The other was that there was a fish bone in one of my fish... which I have to say I've never experienced at a Japanese restaurant before. Ever. I have been here several times, and the quality has continually decreased over time. The latest - got the all you can eat for dinner. I ordered 6 pieces of nigiri and a roll. When I got the nigiri, I immediately noticed there was three times the amount of rice per piece along with the tiniest sliver of fish imaginable. It probably took him more time to cut the fish that thin. So here is what I did - I combined the six slivers if fish, which literally equated to one 'normal' ngiri in other restaurants. I cut one of the rice balls in half and ate it that way. I pushed all the rice to the side - I'm not over exaggerating, there was literally 1/2 cup of rice sitting on my plate. For six pieces of ngiri, it takes talent to screw over the plate like that. And here's the issue. You have to eat all of the rice - which is normal in all you can eat. Now to the roll. Everything but the fish. Ordered a Philadelphia Roll just out of curiosity. Received - as I expected. There was a GIANT piece of cream cheese in the middle, and maybe 1/8 inch slice of fish. In a frugal attempt by the chef to save money, they literally screwed up the entire meal. It's hard to screw up sushi if you are experienced. The plates sell themselves usually. I've been here before as I said, and it's usually hit or miss. But this time, they successfully lost me as a customer. read more

My only other experience with conveyor belt sushi was a bad one. However, my best friend has had good experiences with it, at least in Arizona. She and her husband were super excited to try Sushi Japan when it opened, and finally made it there a few weeks ago. They enjoyed their sushi and overall had a good experience. So she recommended it for happy hour especially since she had some coupons. I can't say I was overly excited but I thought I would try it. We went at about 4pm because my friend had said that happy for lasted until about 5. Well...that's not the case anymore. Happy hour is from 2-3 and 8:30-9:30. As I said, it's not like they are Steak 'N Shake. As my friend said, it's so they can get rid of their leftover sushi from lunch and dinner. It's really the most ridiculous "happy hour" I've ever seen. Needless to say, we were disappointed. The first thing we pulled from the belt was crab rangoon which was cold. We asked the waitress if she could get some that were hot and fortunately she was kind enough to. It was great fresh out. I also pulled the gyoza, also cold, but still good. Since we weren't convinced that the items on the belts were fresh, we ordered the crazy crab roll off the menu. It was decent too. however, looking over the menu I felt that many items were overpriced ($15-18 for a specialty roll). Compare that to my favorite sushi place Wasabi where they are more reasonably priced for great sushi and service. read more

I ordered Sushi Japan for the first time about two hours ago and I'm feeling sick. The order for pickup consisted of 5 rolls California Roll, Spicy Tuna, Crazy Crab, Samurai, and St. Louis Roll plus a miso soup. It ended up costing about $45 which isn't a bad price for premo sushi. When I picked it up the interior of Sushi Japan seemed pretty nice and definitely did not reflect the quality of sushi I received. If it did the place would have looked like a laundromat off Natural Bridge and Kingshighway. The lady who gave me my order goes "oh this is the one with miso soup." I said yes and signed my name on the receipt. I get home and we open the bag. No soup, not a big deal at all. But then I see there's like one plastic container with some rolls in it. At this point I'm pretty sure I got the wrong order, there's like 4 small rolls and they all look like they are mostly just crab. Nope. We had to go back to what we originally ordered and match up how what we ordered could have be related to what we received: Miso Soup -$2- not there California Roll - $5- Standard california roll but 100% imitation crab meat. WTF Spicy Tuna - $6 - Warm cat food. Probably canned tuna plus cream cheese Crazy Crab - $9 - Imitation crab meet plus a lot of cream cheese St. Louis Roll -$7 - Imitation crab meat plus a lot of cream cheese - warm Samurai - $9 - two pieces of shrimp wrapped in lettuce and rice paper. This was the only thing that didn't taste like vomit but there was not much of it. Worst meal I've ever had. read more

I have been going to the Sushi Ai restaurant chain for several years. My boyfriend and I get the same thing every time we go, which is a shrimp tempura roll fried all the way through. We have never had an issue with this request until we came to this location. The cooks refused to do it and said that it was impossible to do (the furthest thing from the truth). We were charged 3$ for the drink that we drank two sips of so we left and went to a sushi place that was down the street (they did fry our shrimp rolls without an issue). I am a HUGE fan of sushi, so I'm a pretty tough critic when it comes to any sushi restaurant reviews! We received a few coupons in the mail for Sushi Japan so we decided to give it a shot on a rainy Friday night. I have to say that I was super excited to try this place, we need more good sushi restaurants in the counties! The restaurant is in a plaza with a few shops and Dierbergs, they have a very large sign in front so we knew exactly where to go. The windows are all covered with thin paper, so we weren't sure what to expect until we walked in. The place was nice inside, it was a lot bigger than I expected and there were quite a few people there. There is a bar on the left, the conveyor belt seating area in the middle and larger traditional Japanese seating on the right. We sat in the bar seating area in front of the conveyor belt, thought it was a cool concept to see all the sushi go by and pick and choose as we pleased! We weren't sure how the pricing of the conveyor belt items worked out until we looked around and saw that there are different colored plates that are associated with different listed prices, all very reasonable. Most of the sushi that passes around are only 2 pieces on a plate, so it is nice to be able to choose lots of different items without getting too full. There are also traditional Japanese drinks, salads and appetizers such as edamame and crab rangoon on the belt. We kept picking up more items and tried lots of different things: hawaiian roll, spicy tuna, Alaska (not our favorite), crab rangoon, daily special, edamame and shrimp dumplings (yum) among others. What I did like about the conveyor was that you had lots of options in smaller portions so you could try a lot, what I didn't like was that sometimes the items might sit for a while before they are picked up; our edamame was lukewarm so it probably rotated for a while. We also decided to order a few rolls off the menu: spicy tuna, spicy salmon (both I think tasted almost identical), salmon and yellowtail roll (yum!). All around, I think the conveyor belt brings a cool factor to the place that brings people in; we will probably be back with friends for drinks and small bites. The service was good and the restaurant was nice. However, Sapporo sushi is still our favorite in the area, they have the best tasting sushi around. I did enjoy coming here and to most people that aren't obsessed with sushi like me, this place will probably be a hit. read more

Wow! This is a new place. Not at all impressive from the outside so you might be tempted to drive on by--don't. You'll miss a great meal. Turns out the windows are covered by paper screens that look beautiful--from the inside. In fact, the interior decor is quite upscale. We ordered shrimp tempura, pork katsu, seaweed salad, gyoza, and tuna rolls. Everything was excellent. The shrimp were HUGE and delicious. Service was outstanding. Even the green tea was particularly good. We are big sushi fans and will definitely be back to Sushi Japan. The final bill was a pleasant surprise--quite reasonable for sushi and everything else we had. We visited probably about 7 p.m. on a Thursday night and it wasn't busy. Another diner came in while we were there. As we left, we asked him how his food was and he said "outstanding." I hope this restaurant does well. It's close to home and the kind of place we could entertain out-of-town guests. Oh, and they had little alcoves with larger tables. It looked like you could seat a family of 6 or so and have a little privacy. They had flat screens (muted) above the sushi bar, which was nice because the Olympics were on. But they in no way detracted from our meal or the atmosphere. We didn't try the conveyor belt items because we wanted to order off the menu this time, but we would definitely use the conveyor belt items to sample new options in the future. I ate here for the first time today and I am a huge fan now! Not only was the sushi excellent and very affordable, but the staff was also very attentive to our needs the full 2 hours we were there. I am absolutely in love with the conveyor belt too which sends around a variety of items for your choosing... it's something you must see to believe! I've never really been the type to leave reviews for restaurants, but I've been coming to Sushi Japan since they opened and still enjoy as much as ever. This is actually a bit odd as I have never been much of a sushi fan. Sushi Japan offers a variety of food, including a hibachi grill, which is my personal favorite. The decor and staff are fantastic every time I have been, and while it may not be a five star restaurant, you will be hard pressed to find a better value anywhere else. Some of the other comments refer to business being slow, which is true to some degree. Sushi Japan only opened a few months ago, and while being immediately poplar and busy may be the dream of a small business owner, the reality is that business takes awhile to pick up. Sushi Japan is a perfect place to take a family, even with small children. The menu is extensive and many sushi and non sushi items are absolutely delicious! It is certainly worth a try if you find yourself in west county - - especially considering that most other restaurants out here are boring chains. read more

Sushi was excellent but my wife ordered sesame seeds chicken and the waitress insured her it was white meat chicken after getting her food the chicken was hard and look like dark meat when we ask the waitress she keep repeating it's white meat my wife said I'm not eating it and waitress got an attitude with her when we tried to order Teriyaki chicken saying that's same chicken but it's not one is cut up and fried the other is just chicken pieces. I was a little hesitant about going inside because of the way the restaurant looked outside and where it was located, but I'm so glad I did! I did the all you can eat dinner special for $20 and it was well worth it! The sushi was great and the restaurant was clean and classy. I loved all the sushi rolls that I ordered and there are plenty to choose from on the menu. I also liked how I could watch the chef make my sushi right in front of me. The ingredients were fresh (which is a must when you are eating raw fish) and the staff were very pleasant! I'll be back for more in the near future. read more

This was our first time at Sushi Japan. It was recommended by a friend, and thank you, Katie, for suggesting this place. We went on a Monday night and it was not very busy, but we were given top notch service. They have a menu that you can order from, but we choose the all you can eat option. You get to choose what you want from Miso Soup, pot stickers, CRAB RANGOONS (which were fabulous, perfectly cook and the inside was very creamy with a great taste, slightly sweet, YUM), salad (with the traditional ginger dressing) and then the rolls and nigiri....oh, man. It seems that there is a conveyer belt but it isn't used anymore. Instead, you simply check off the food you want and it is made fresh. I tried the black and white, the honey, caterpillar, boston, Christmas, St Louis, Eel, and a few more....Did I mention all you can eat. It wasn't about how much I could eat, but how much I wanted more. The whole thing was $20. There was a $25 option with more choices but I already had over 20 choices to begin with. The key to this place is to order your original order and while your waiting for that to be made, make your second order on the paper. For the record, my wife and I usually go to Nobu's off of 170 and Olive -- that's are benchmark for the STL area. Did Sushi Japan hit the benchmark? No, but it's not a bad place. Can I really complain about all-you-can-eat sushi plus miso soup and apps for $20? The quality is better than the off-the-shelf sushi at Schnucks and Dierberg's if that helps. Decent service, friendly sushi chef, and warm saki. The spider roll was very good, as was the ngiri tuna and salmon. We will be back. read more

The meal was TERRIBLE! I'm usually a big fan of sushi but everything here was horrible! It's an all you can eat that's overpriced for one thing. When my original order arrived the veggies making up the rolls were off tasting and the fish smelled horrid and out of date. I tried again and ordered some nigiri but that fish too smelled out of date. When I went to pay it turns out that they charge EXTRA for every piece of sushi you don't eat even if it's horrid tasting! I got miso soup, house salad, gyoza, california roll, spicy tuna roll and alaska roll. The food was very good and I enjoyed myself very much. I would recommend this place to others. They have a dinner $19.99 all you can eat also. My friend says the menu is larger and he was happy with what he had eaten. Remember though, what you leave you have to pay for. The staff is so rude and horrible! I always order the same roll (fried St. Louis roll). Twice now, I have ordered it and came to pick it up and they give me the fried Philly roll. No big deal, mistakes happen. But this VERY rude employee both times has told me he's 100% sure I ordered the Philly, not the St. Louis roll, and pretty much called me a liar and gave me a stare down. I was pissed, that's no way to treat a customer, especially one like me who works so close and goes there 1-2 times a week. I'm never going there again. Been missing a good Friday eve sushi place since Bento's closed a few years ago. Had takeout and without a chance to see the food preparation, did not have expectations greater than the local grocery store sushi preparation. WOW !
