Alright... 2 things I gotta say before I dive into my review. 1) I used to like this spot. Sushi was generally ok and the waitstaff used to be pretty friendly. 2) I still want to like this spot. With those two things said... In the past two visits - I would say this place realistically gets a 2.5 from me. The time before last, I ordered ramen. It was ok, but nothing particular about it stood out. My bf liked his udon. This most recent time, we came for happy hour. We ordered sushi... I'm not sure if they switched sushi chefs but everything in the rolls was falling out. Nothing stayed inside of the rolls themselves. Rolls that were labelled "spicy" were not. We ordered the "spicy calamari" app which was basically salted pepper calamari in the tiniest serving bowl for $5.50. Totally not worth the money. I could have gone half a block down and gotten the same dish for 2 bucks more and gotten 5 Xs the amount I got here. Same story with the pepper fin app. $7 for a tiny portion of pepperfin - 6 slices (maybe) that looked like they took a regular slab and cut it length-wise and then sliced them super thin. A pretty good restaurant for sushi and Japanese food! Parking here can be tricky though. It's a narrow, one-way, parking lot with spaces left and right. Although I've always managed to find parking *knocks on wood.* I went here for the first time for their lunch special. I was seated right away. Then 5 - 10 minutes later, 3 more small groups came after. I had the rainbow roll while my boyfriend ordered the bento box. Both dishes are generous portions and pretty worth it. I just found it strange that they served the other small parties that came after me... By the time I got my water, the other parties got their food and everything. It was like a 10 - 15 min difference, just to keep water. Not sure if it was because I was wearing a Naruto shirt and it intimidated them haha. However, it wasn't the biggest deal. I went in with 3 friends and wish I hadn't. We waited for 20 minutes for someone to greet us once they seated us. I ordered the Katsu and Salmon Bento box. My salmon was burnt on the bottom, the Katsu sauce was sour, and the side California Roll tasted old. The couple near ys complained about the long wait for their food and then received the wrong order. I came to this restaurant today to have lunch with my friend. Basically we were enjoying our girl time and the fact that restaurants are starting to open back up. I took my time with my food and i was told "take your time" by my waitress. Moments later I look across the room, and I see waitress looking at me while talking to the sushi chefs at the bar. In cantonese she said, "does it really take that long to finish a bowl of rice". Obviously she was referring to me. There were only two tables inside and the other table just sat down. She rudely talked shit about me and the manager didn't even check her. Loud enough for me to hear, thinking it wouldn't be a possibility that i knew exactly what she said After I paid, on my way out i went to the register and asked for the manager. He identified himself and infront of him and my waitress, I let them both know to be smarter next time they want to talk shit in another language about how long it takes for me to finish my food. The manager responded shocked and guilty "I'm sorry" with a doe eyed bambi look on their faces This establishment is extremely disrespectful of how they treat their customers. They sat us down and gave us water; this was about the only thing they got right. We waited about ten minutes until we had to ask for someone to come take our order. About 5 minutes later a waiter came to take our order; this was they only time he came to our table. After 15 minutes, we had to get up and ask for the beer I ordered. About 35 minutes later our food came to us from someone else. We had to ask for the check. I left no tip and I rarely ever do that. It was too bad; I wanted to order more food and maybe another beer. All the great things I heard about this place were true! My first time eating here and I loved Most of the rolls I got. The paradise roll was too saucy tho. The salmon sashimi was super fresh and the texture was buttery. The staff was very friendly and knowledgable about the rolls and they recommended which ones were the most popular, so we tried those ones. It wasn't too busy either which was great because we were hangrrrrry. BUT we weren't too happy about their parking. Very limited parking because it's on the strip of Freeport blvd so not too many places you can park. The prices here aren't too bad either. We asked for a happy hour menu because we didn't see anything about it in the regular menu. We ordered five $5 rolls: Crispy spicy unagi roll: I'm not a big fan of unagi, but my boyfriend liked it. Crispy unagi, jalepenos, cucumber. Land Park: shrimp tempura, snow crab and avocado; it was okay. Rainbow roll: this may be one of the better deals from the $5 list. Each piece had a large piece of sashimi on top. Spicy Cafe roll: another one of the larger rolls from the list. This was probably my favorite. It didn't taste spicy at all, but the shrimp tempura, snow crab, avocado and salmon were a nice combination. Crunchy roll: this was just okay. snow crab, shrimp tempura and avocado topped with tempura crumbs. Overall, the food is decent and the prices are fair (at happy hour). The waitresses are polite and were prompt with our water refills. It's not a fancy restaurant, but it tastes good enough when I'm craving some simple sushi. Notes: -It's located in a small strip mall which has a unidirectional flow of traffic through the parking lot. If someone goes the wrong way, it gets backed up. Freshness is not found here! I came here one afternoon with my hubby after work. I ordered their Pepperfin and Bryant's Rainbow Roll. My hubby ordered off the happy hour menu - fried chicken and squid skewers. The Pepperfin was okay. I've certainly had better at Taro's where it is a lot fresher. I felt like the fish was cut in slices that were too thick; it felt like a mouthful each bite! (But that's just me.) The fish on the Bryant's roll was also the same; not very fresh. The plate did look amazing! But unfortunately it tasted a little dry to me. It may be the fish not being fresh that threw off the taste? I did enjoy the sauce that complimented the rolls. The fried chicken on the other hand was not what we expected, lol. We thought they were going to be fried chicken wings with the bone in - but they were actually just popcorn chicken! My hubby did not enjoy their squid skewers at all, he took one bite and did not bother eating the rest. Service here is also a 1 star! After the lady served our food, that was the last we saw of her. We didn't get a refill on our drinks, not even once! We had to waive her down a few times for her to bring our check. Ah, we certainly won't be back for sushi at this place! I came here for happy hour, and it's odd but their happy hour ends at 5:25pm. I think service was mediocre during happy hour. I feel like they can get pretty busy. I enjoyed the food I ordered, I felt like it was definitely reasonable for the price. I got the dragon roll and pepper fin. The pepper fin was definitely on the spicier side, it had an enormous kick to it. Parking was easy, there was lot of parking but the parking lot only goes one direction so if you saw a parking spot you wanted but passed it. You'll have to loop around. It all started one evening ages ago when, enjoying a nice dinner out, my daughter and I had the misfortune of sitting near a couple of extraordinarily rude patrons who were just brutalizing the sweet gal who was serving us. You know the type -- the kind that complains about everything, sends stuff back, asks to see the manager, and really all they want is to see how much they can get discounted from their meal. My girl and I were overcome with sympathy for the server, and after they left we told her not to worry. She was just perfect and the food was great and don't take it personally -- not that she was complaining -- she was way too professional for that -- but it was hard for us to stand by and watch folks subject others to such rude treatment, all in the name of saving a buck. After that, my girl started wanting to come here once a week, to see our server Corinne. We bonded. And now we're here either Tuesday or Wednesday each week, to be served Ross's special surprise, a side of sesame chicken, grilled asparagus, and some pepperfin. Plus a giant glass of Kendall Jackson chard and a Shirley Temple. And we sit wherever Corinne is serving. Well, the Sunshine Roll (I mistakenly called it Rainbow Roll in my pics ) had cucumbers, which I normally like, but in this roll it created a slimy consistency with every bite. Like buying into an okra! Weird. The Hot Tiger Roll was really good. Really spicy (there's a tempura fried jalapeño in it) but pretty good! The service was slow. I saw on other reviews that during happy hour it seems like the norm. The price was great though....for the two rolls, pepper fin sashimi, and a bento box with both chicken and salmon in it, we left spending under $30. Not bad. Would I go again?
