I saw one of the sushi chef open a bag of the sushi meat... you can tell the meat was colored by a dye and all the fish is either farmed raised or artificial... when the server went to bus a table she used a dirty rag, she didn't even spray any cleaner on the table. I had sushi a few days ago in Vancouver BC and I can tell the quality of this restaurant wasn't even comparable. I couldn't finish my roll after seeing the dye ooze out of the bag.... It's the efficiency of a factory assembly line mixed with the self-service of a buffet plus the bonus mystery of wonderin' what's next in line. In Japan, this style of eating fast-food sushi is called Kaiten-zushi (回転寿司) and in Vancouver it's often called dinner by my wife. She likes this place. It's a-ok. A conveyor belt is a man-made invention for continuously moving objects from one place to another. Sushi Chiyo's playful sushi-go-round allows you to continuously move a stream of Japanese-style food into your mouth. Choose wisely and keep an eye out for the "fresh plates." My best suggestion for "good" sushi is to order a few of the custom hand-rolls before filling up on the 4-piece sushi rolls and a few 2-piece negiri sushi plates. The convoy of sushi also allows for dining cost controls. You only pay for what you want and what you eat ... even if most of it is not what you want. It's conveniently delivered right there to your table and just cost a couple bucks for each plate. Don't even try to steal a piece from one of the choices rollin' by or hide a plate hopin' the waitress won't discover it. The food isn't worth that much stress. The one area where they are lacking is their customer service, although I think it's gotten better. They have some new sushi guys who are friendlier. I like the asparagus rolls the best. I usually ask for the spicy Mayo with any sushi I order...but as usual if I don't check the to-go bag they don't put any in it. So I've gotten in the habit of opening the bag in the restaurant and checking myself. Except today there were a lot standing around waiting to be seated or had orders to pick up...After waiting almost 30 minutes for the to go order and asking for 5 of the small mayo's they again gave me nothing in my bag. I even said when I asked for it that I would pay the extra. Maybe the sauce is like gold or an inconvenience to them by me asking at the time of ordering. Unfortunately I have to give this review because I've eaten here for a long time and this time their quality has changed and for the price you would think they would keep their standards, the volcano roll I always get usually is great with it's half omelet wrap in seaweed and rice then it's imitation crab with scallops and spicy mayo but this time it was 75% and 25% instead of the usual 50/50 then there was always 3 scallops but now it's 2. The spicy tuna hand roll I always get 4 of these and this time the back end was basically hollow without tuna and rice which was just disappointing. read more

I've been here before but it's been a while and it seems the place has really gone downhill. Tonight we came in for sushi and were treated to some astonishingly bad service. To start, when my daughter asked what soft drinks were available, the waitress (who looked irritated that we were even there from the first moment) just sort of swept her hand toward the machine in a "look for yourself" gesture. After taking our order and dropping off our drinks we basically didn't see her again. My wife's poke order was super tiny, just four little slices and some avocado to make it look less lonely in the tiny finger bowl it was served in. The rest of the sushi my wife and daughter ordered was fine, but I had ordered some cooked salmon instead. Half an hour later we finally went to go ask what's going on and the waitress first insisted we got everything, and then when we showed her otherwise she said "It might be sold out." Might be a good thing to tell your customer! Turns out it wasn't, so they cooked it real quick and put it on a tiny little plate. The fish tasted good but was about 60% bone. Another waitress happened by after we'd been there about an hour without a peep from our server (no more water, no asking if everything was okay, not even bringing us the bill -- she just hung out on the other side of the restaurant shooting the breeze with other employees). This is the only time we've left zero tip. Might not ever go back. read more

I like conveyor sushi. There, I said it. There are times when I want a little of this and a little of that. The opportunity to catch a parade of edible rice rolled art strolling by me at three quarters of a mile per hour. My family and I have been to our fair share of conveyor sushi places that certainly lend credence to the stigma of bad sushi on Parade but it seems as though restaurants are popping up aiming to change people's minds. Sushi Chiyo is certainly one of those. The only knock on the place is the parking situation which certainly isn't Sushi Chiyo's fault, it's a prime location with good traffic flow as far as customers go. However irritating the parking lot, the quality of the food makes you forget really quick. The staff were very nice, attentive without being annoying and they genuinely seemed happy we were there. The prices are fair, happy hour aside, we were not there during those hours, but plates ranged from $1.35 to about $3.00 for the usual stuff, there are fancier plates for more. The decor is really comfortable, it's not over the top oriental like so many places and they have more booths than most places. It's so comfortable I plan on returning often. Handicapped access grade is a C. Handicapped parking is on the opposite side of the mini mall in front of Panda, the walk way is the rough cobblestone stuff. Finally the entry way to the restaurant is a bit crowded of you are rocking a wheeled device. read more

Not too shabby for my first time at a sushi belt place! I am an avid lover of Trappers Sushi but since they don't have those anywhere close to Portland, we settled with this place. They had delicious rolls, desserts and salad selections. We ate for 2 for under $20 and walked out super stuffed. It was very clean (that was my biggest issue with these types of places, cleanliness). The staff was alright. We were seated at the bar and brought our drinks and then didn't talk to anyone until we were paying for our meal. They weren't over the top with kindness by any means but they also weren't rude when we talked. I could've gone with another refill on my water but I lived. Conveyor belt type Sushi place. The rolls aren't bad. The belt rocks way more rolls than Nagiri style Sushi. The food here is not bad... it's just not great. Service here is another story... it's barely there. Everyone sort of does what they feel they should be doing, but doesn't pay attention to the current customers enough. The Sushi chefs work work work away to make sure the belt remains a certain limit full, but don't look up enough to see if the people at the bar need anything. The servers are not much better. They all need to be more pleasant and attentive. The customer should not be responsible for making so many requests. I find very little reason to tip when coming here. The place is clean and modern looking inside...contemporary if you will... almost looks like a chain. There is lots of parking in this Strip Mall, BUT it is busy so it can prove challenging to find a spot at times. read more

Therefore, the sushi is fresh and lots of variety, making for a quick and enjoyable visit. Got food poisoning from here last night. Awful. Almost had to go to the ER. Have always kinda questioned their food - some of their stuff tends to look like it's been sitting out for awhile, and they rarely have a variety of stuff going around on the belt. We usually have to order what we want because they don't have much out. People were just sitting around waiting for them to make more sushi. I saw one of the guys use a yellow towel/rag to wipe the inside of a to go container before putting sushi in it. This was the same rag I saw him using to clean the counter. I have also seen employees not washing their hands when necessary. There's been new employees there so we thought the service & sushi would be better but no. Thankfully, Go-Go Sushi & Sushi Mioga have opened up in Hazel Dell so we'll be frequenting those new places instead. read more

They use Qmenu online. My order was to be ready 20 mins after ordering, I go in at 20 min mark and my ticket had even been given to be prepared! So I wait another 10 minutes. Okay with that. I get my food, leave and then 10 mins later they call me to tell me my order was wrong so I have to drive back. I go back in to get what was missing. They want the whole bag I have already put in my car because it was the complete wrong order. So I go back out, get order and bring back in. Depending on what time you go in, the sushi may not be so fresh or they're running out of sushi because this place gets packed! I love their veggie sushi options, they don't always have vegetarian rolls out so I get them fresh to order almost every time. The guys are nice but depending where you're sitting, they may not glance your way at all and you'll have to order through the servers walking around. The veggie roll is great and you can't go wrong with the avocado roll although I like to cover mine with the spicy orange sauce they make. The service is so bad it takes 2-3 hours to get fed. They need to bring the sushi track back online so you can eat in a reasonable length of time. The sushi is great and the happy hour prices are awesome. All of the servers wear gloves, which is nice....but they never seem to change them. On several occasions I have seen them cash out other customers and then go back to serving beverages, without changing their gloves. Last time I was there I watched the woman wipe her face, bus a table and reset it, then she asked my mom and I if we wanted water. I told her no thanks, but what I should have said was yes--if you change your gloves. That said, the health department has given them great scores. The men making the sushi change their gloves often, and that seems more important to me then clean gloves on a cup when I will be drinking out of a straw anyway. read more

Up in the Salmon Creek area for the week and seeing what the area has to offer in terms of noms. I'm always game to find a new conveyor-belt sushi place, so why not start here? Tuesday afternoon, 1:00pm found me heading in to Sushi Chiyo, conveyor belt sushi in a small strip mall thirty seconds off the highway. At first glance, the prices are somewhat higher than some other places I've been (Marine Polis comes to mind). However, after grabbing my first $1.75 plate of Salmon it became clear the fish quality was reasonably good and the pieces were quite big--easily half-again larger than the cuts at Marine Polis. Almost had that "too big for one bite" size. This big mouth managed anyway. I decided to order off the menu, so I started with Saba. What, no Saba? Hmmm.. they don't serve Mackerel here, making it only the second sushi joint I've been to that hasn't had it. Okay, I can live with that. How about Tekka-Maki? The (clearly non-Japanese) chef behind the counter gave me a quizzical look that let me know immediately they don't understand sushi-Japanese here at Sushi Chiyo and any future orders would need to be in English. I rephrased "Tuna Roll Please". Tuna roll arrived exactly as I'd ordered, freshly made, decent. This place is probably 3.5 stars, though unfortunately I'm stuck with 3 or 4 in a review. It's not fantastic, but it's decent. The rice wasn't particularly flavorful, and had that slight bit of crunch in the center of each grain that indicated it could've used another minute or two in the steamer. The fish was good. They have a happy hour price menu on weekdays between 2:00 and 5:00 where all plates drop to $1.75 (except for those that started out lower anyway). I'll probably head back in there for some $1.75 happy hour rolls. If you're passing by on the highway and have a sushi hankering, this place isn't a bad stop, especially as heading north it's probably the last good sushi until Tacoma. read more

This is my favorite conveyer belt sushi place in the Vancouver area. They have a good variety of rolls and will make you special rolls upon request. They always taste fresh too. And they have a very cheap happy hour in the afternoons! The wait staff is very friendly but the cooks never seem to be that friendly. My personal favorite is the Vegas roll. I usually have to order it since it's a hot roll but sometimes it's already out. Overall this place is clean, affordable, and has a good selection of rolls. It won't blow your mind or anything but if you're just looking for consistency, good flavor and good prices then this is the place to go! I was just there. The sushi is good. However, I would keep track of what the number of plates (color of plates) you ended having. I saw earlier a person having a conversation about her check. And I thought to myself, how uncomfortable! Well, the cashier (the guy wearing a white shirt) overcharged me as well. I had miso soup and I was charged about $5 for it. It clearly is priced as $1.45. I'm from out of town, but been here twice while visiting family nearby. The first time we ate at a booth, picking food off of the rotating belt. I love the option of just trying small plates and many different options, rather than ordering a couple large rolls and filling up. The second time we ordered takeout during Happy Hour. It's quite a good deal!!! In town for work, was starving since I skipped lunch. Honestly, I was headed to Burgerville, but saw this place and saw how crowded it was. It died down, I was seated promptly, given a beverage, started pulling plates off the belt. Some were very tasty, but then I got one plate that seem like it was too warm. I like to come to Sushi Chiyo during happy hour since the sushi doesn't taste half bad and it's nicely priced. It does get quite busy during happy hour but they work quite hard to making sure people get seated in a timely manner since you can only be seated once a spot opens up. For children or people who can't use chopsticks they have ones made to be easily used. One of my 8 year old nephew likes sushi and when we took him here it makes it much easier for him to eat what he wants. read more

When my wife and I find a good place to eat, we usually become loyal, long term customers. We found that in a previous sushi place and it became our one place for sushi for over 3 years. Unfortunately, they had a high turnover rate and the declining service forced us to spread our wings to find another place to settle. We had heard of this place through the grapevine and were VERY excited and hopeful to try it. The first day, Great Sushi... mediocre service. We tend to tip based on service and left an appropriate tip. We gave it a try again tipping very decently, hoping they would see us as customers that were worth giving time too... that lasted half the service..... we are sad to say, this will be our last time visiting this establishment due to the deplorable service.
