It's nearly the end of 2016 and I've been coming here since the 4Q of 2011. I cannot believe I have not written a review of Dabu Sushi. I can describe Dabu Sushi in one word: solid. In my opinion, just a notch below Yotsuba up the road and Miki across town but on par with Aki on Whittaker in Ypsi, Bewon on Plymouth, and Biwako in Saline. I enjoy the robust beef bi bim bap. They serve brown rice now too. Also highly recommended are the fabulous chicken, beef, tempura, and salmon bento boxes. I have also enjoyed the shrimp and veggie appetizer. I think the prices and portions are about right for what they charge. Definitely good food here. The menu is focused on traditional and classic dishes which they do well. I moved to the area during COVID and have been trying to hit up the local restaurants - you know, it's my duty. :) I have my go-to places, but needed something new; enter Sushi Dabu. I placed my order over the phone, food was ready 20-25 minutes later. Masks and plastic divisions were setup; there were clean and used pens available; staff was friendly; and food was great. My only real complaint is that it's pretty pricey (as others have mentioned.) Overall solid place to get some carry-out sushi. read more

(Summary at End.) Came here for an early supper on a Sunday evening. The atmosphere is casual and relaxed. There is a huge selection of rolls and both Japanese and Korean entrees. We initially ordered some special rolls, but our waitress informed of that they were temporarily short-staffed and the rolls would take awhile, so we ordered entrees instead. We ordered a stone-bowl bibimbap with beef, spicy pork, and seafood soondubu (soft tofu). The stone bowl was delicious with ample variety of veggies and the stone kept the food really hot. The spicy pork was also a hit! The portion size was huge and the flavor was on point. The soondubu was okay--I feel like it could have used a little more tofu. There was some seafood, but overall, the dish didn't stand out. Our food took awhile to come out, probably because of the short-staff. If you're in a rush, I'd recommend asking about wait times prior to ordering. The space is not particularly well-ventilated, so I'd recommend wearing something you don't mind getting food-smell on. Sushi Dabu is a Korean Japanese restaurant. I choose this place for our family Sunday night dinner. The place was packed when we walked in around 6:30. Only two servers for the entire restaurant, so it took us a while to get and to receive our orders. Miso soup was okay, but I love Korean small dishes/appetizers come with your entree free of charge, We had Korean pickles cucumbers, fish cakes, and seaweed kombu. They are so tasty. The entrees we had was seafood tofu stew, spicy pork, and bulgogi in the hot stone bowl. There are so many good food to try out on the manu. I am very happy with the food. Best sushi in Ann Arbor hands down! Very consistent, fresh and yummy! Never disappoints!

I am so glad I came here. I was looking to eat some hot Asian food but noodles just didn't seem to be what I wanted and I didn't want just the plain ol American style Chinese food. I ended up coming here instead and was please to see both the sushi chef and his apprentice at the bar. It reminded me of my dad in his own little sushi restaurant. I ended up getting the spicy calamari stone bowl. The veggies were crisp on the inside and perfectly carmelized on the outside. Something only a person who truly knows the way of the wok can understand. It wasn't overly drenched with gochujang like most places are. The whole point of the stone bowl is for that extra yummy crispy sizzled rice you get and when it's sogged down by too much sauce it totally defeats the purpose. The calamari was well cooked just tender enough and just enough chew. It wasn't just the baby octopi tentacles you're used to in the basic fusion restaurants. I was actually pretty pleased that the cute waitress I know has to be the owners wife, described it to me saying don't mix it too much you'll lose the balance of the meal. This is how you know her kids eat well. That huge heart just showing the pride of their quality meal. She said start from the side and eat around the bowl so you can taste better. Which I did. And was glad I took her advice. The banchan side dishes were delicious not too sweet for the pickled radish and perfectly seasoned and crisp for the kimchi cucumber. This was a total fluke me stopping by.... But all in all... totally worth it. I'll have to come out again and try the sushi. read more

We used to like this place a lot, but the last several visits have been super disappointing. Last night's visit will be our last. My wife and I both ordered stone bowls; hers was beef and mine was seafood. When they brought the bowls to the table and we got everything stirred up, neither one of us could find any protein in our bowls at all. I called the waitress over and asked if they forgot to add the meat and seafood, and she told us, "no, the pieces are just very small." I asked her to look into my bowl to see if she saw any seafood at all - she repeated again, "I can't see them because they are very small." My wife's bowl had literally no meat whatsoever in it. I eventually found two tiny salad shrimp, one half ring of calamari, and two mussels the size of my thumbnail in my bowl. We saw our server go to the back and microwave a scant pinch of bulgogi, which she then brought to my wife. So we sat there each of us with a $14 bowl of 95% rice and 5% skimpy vegetables eating it only because we were super hungry. As we were finishing, she brought over only two banchan - kimchi and cucumbers. No fish cake, potatoes, egg, or anything else. The server knew we weren't happy but did nothing for us. The food has gotten increasingly more disappointing in the last year, and we just won't be back. read more

Came here for dinner on a Monday evening. Was completely empty at 7pm. Only 1 other person came in during the whole time I was eating there. They serve both Korean and Japanese food. Currently, they have a deal for $3 off of 3 rolls when you order 1 regular roll, 1 vegetarian roll, and 1 special roll. My choices were the Dabu roll, sweet potato tempura roll, and Dynamite roll respectively. The Dabu roll was pretty good. It has imitation crab, tuna? and egg and is deep fried. The sweet potato roll was pretty good as well -- just strips of sweet potato fried in tempura batter. If I could go back in time, I would NOT order the dynamite roll. It was a slob of octopus, imitation crab, and random seafood stuffs -- basically a spicy seafood salad layered on top of fried pieces of seaweed covered rice. The seafood salad was charred at the top, I assume from a quick run over with a blow torch. Other than that, it was cold. This was a terrible decision and cost $12.95. Rolls come with the typical salad with ginger dressing and miso soup. My friend got the spicy ramen, which was very spicy. read more

Extremely disappointing and frustrating. I did my homework and thought this place would be great, but came up snake eyes on every front- the dishes, the order correctness, and then the customer service. First tried to call the restaurant to verify something but the lady we talked to shooed us to order online through yelp. Ok, sure, they're busy. Order the Tuna Festival, Veggie Jap-Chae and pork dumplings. The tuna rolls were fine, the Jap-Chae was a bit over-greasy, the dumplings didn't have much inside them, and we were missing 3 side items. It had been a hefty price to pay for not so much, and some disappointing food. But we figured ok, maybe it was an off day, let's call and see about those missing items. The woman on the phone admitted some things were incorrect, said some things on the website ordering system were wrong and didn't take responsibility, and then said there was no way she could refund us the money. All the while, on the phone, instead of listening to us, she just got angry and yelled. So here we are, out some food, stuck with some less-than-stellar noodles, and really disappointed. I have eaten sashimi here 2-3 times. This place has become one of the few restaurants in my rotation. My GF usually has ramen; she agrees with me. I find the usual obligatory miso soup to be flavorful and not the usual salty water served in other restaurants serving "Japanese" food. The fish tasted fresh and smooth - not stringy nor dry. I was shocked upon entering this restaurant that our favorite waitress from this place's days as Sushi Nara was the one to wait on us. It was a happy delight as she was one of the reasons we liked the place. My mother and I were due a ladies luncheon and we were in the mood for chirashi. We had to be in the area for her various medical tests at any rate. I had a 15% off coupon from the Clipper magazine and discovered online that they featured chirashi for lunch for a song. It seemed like a happy idea and was convenient too. They have redone this place, taking out the sushi conveyor belt and putting in more tables. I prefer the comfy wooden booths, more intimate, that line the sides of the restaurant. They also no longer play classical music at top volume on the big screen, I kind of miss it (LOL) but it is a much more soothing atmosphere now. We started our meal with a nice pot of green tea and ice water. Glad to see pots now, I prefer to have my own for refills. They also brought out salads with a gloppy ginger dressing, which I liked better than my mother, and bowls of nice miso soup. We requested no octopus or squid on our chirashi. I like both but find them too hard to eat raw myself. They were very accomodating about this. They brought us nicely filled bowls of happiness to indulge on. Full of salmon, tuna, white tuna, crab stick, yellowtail, mackerel, egg, shrimp, veggies and these little purple bits that were crazy addictive to me. Utter deliciousness and the rice involved was perfect. I could have eaten this dish all day. As my mother had fasted and we did not realize we would be getting soup and salad we ordered a couple of rolls. Mistake because the chirashi was plenty. The rolls were cheap though and pretty decent. My mom picked a Snow roll which had white tuna, crab stick, cucumber, avocado, tempura crunch and masago. It was a bit bland in my opinion but super fresh. I picked the bargain Crunch Crunch roll which featured tempura shrimp, crab stick, avocado, tempura crunch, eel sauce and masago on top. I thought mine was a much better pick but neither were even close to being as delicious as the chirashi. We will be back for sure but I think we will just stick to chirashi, filling and amazing. The bento boxes we observved were mighty tempting though. I was just too stuffed afterwards from adding the rolls to our meal and frankly it detracted a bit from the experience. read more

Having lived in a bigger city with lots of good Asian food options, there are few places that are able to wow me. Decided to try out Sushi Dabu in A2 after reading online reviews. My friend & I dined around 5pm on a weekday and the place was completely empty. The atmosphere and vibe was quite nice and we were greeted by a nice lady who asked us to sit wherever we wanted to. We ordered a few things from the menu - avocado boat (tempura deep fried avocados stuffed with crab salad and spicy tuna), chicken katsu don (deep fried chicken cutlets with omelette), and beef tofu bubble pot spicy stew. I would say everything was just okay, nothing spectacular or nothing I would rave about. At the same time, nothing was bad. My major complaint would be regarding the Katsu - it was not crispy at all...I'm not a fan of soggy Katsu. Might come back to try more stuff, but not anytime soon. read more
