I love sushi - and this place has some great options! I typically get the Sonterra roll which has shrimp tempura. It's pretty filling and delicious! I've also had the Stone Oak roll which is a must try - has jalapeños but isn't too spicy. They also serve Korean food - my husband tried the bulgogi and rated it pretty good - just a bit pricey. So I was very excited to try a new sushi place, especially one that was close to my house. I was very disappointed with this restaurant. First off it is very small inside, and seating is limited, but we were sat quickly. It was EXTREMELY hot inside the restaurant. They had a fan towards the front to help, but it was very uncomfortable. The waitress also was not friendly. The restaurant was busy, and I believe there were only two servers, so our waitress had several tables. With that being said, I do not feel that it should affect the level of service patrons received. I asked questions about menu items and felt very rushed to order even when we asked for more time. We ordered Gyoza as an appetizer and two sushi rolls. The Gyoza came out quick, but she did not bring us any plates and did not come back to check on us, so we were left trying to eat our appetizer off the serving dish. After failing to get her attention to request plates, I gave up. The sushi took a very long time to come out. She said it was due to them having a new chef, but still, it was a very long wait. When our order did come out, It was nothing special in my opinion. I have had better sushi rolls, and quite frankly it was not worth the hot environment or poor service we endured. The miso soup was hot and tasty. The right balance of miso, tofu, negi, and nori. 8:30pm on a Thursday evening and still a good crowd enjoying the fare. I ordered the sushi plate which is a combination of chefs choice nigiri 8 pieces and one roll. The sushi was very fresh - sake 2, kani, ebi, maguro, hamachi, tako, hirame. Best octopus I've had in a long time. Service was fast and friendly and the server was appropriately attentive. Definitely recommend this place. A very nice experience. Not even sure which number visit this was but decided it's time it deserved a review, this location is top notch when it comes to Korean food; they have all the side dishes and the lady was nice enough to make a traditional dish that wasn't listed on the menu last time I dined here. It's a little bit on the pricey side but considering how difficult it is to find authentic Korean food in San Antonio I'm more than happy to pay for this. They have super quick to go service when you call ahead and place it, only took about 10-15 minutes and the location is super easy to access with tons of parking. When it comes to sushi joints, I'm used to walking in and having the mood lighting hit me like a ton of bricks. This is so different in the best of ways. Imagine if there were a sushi place that catered more to a family and friends vibe versus the classy upscale usual. This is that concept realized. The owner is so so nice. For example, my first time here was a subpar experience and the manager addressed the issues like a class act. He took responsibility for the situation Dr and even offered to pay for the mistake. Ever since then we have had nothing short of spectacular experiences. The waiters are consistently very good and the quality of food ranges from an 8 on a "bad" day to a 10 more often than you might expect. Some of my favorite dishes are the pork bigolgi, which is jam packed with intense delicious flavors and comes with more side dishes than I can even remember. Try them all, each one changes the combination of flavors dramatically on the palate. If you like tempura sushi, the Princess roll is the way to go. It has cream cheese and eel sauce so you will get the richness of the cream cheese and the sweet eel sauce will help balance it off a bit. All in all, I've tried about 10-12 different kinds of sushi rolls and each one has been good enough to win the bronze medal for SA in my book. Because of the service and extra non-sushi dishes, they still deserve a full 5 stars. We are very new to the San Antonio area- looking for sushi and/or Korean food. Found this restaurant and decided to go based on the reviews. Food was ok:I'm 1/2 Korean so I'm probably a little pickier about great Korean. -Gyoza-on par with most Japanese restaurants -Kimbap-was tasty but was HUGE - definitely difficult to eat with one bite as is typical. They should call it the 2 bite kimbap! -Tuna sashimi- ok- not great- seemed previously frozen -Alta Vista roll-good- great for low carb life- the crab in it wasn't over mayonnaised -Bulgogi- standard issue, nothing to write home about but does its job if you are craving it -Soon dubu jigae- was VERY oily on top-had a decent flavor- they did not skimp o n the tofu -Black Dragon roll- my son liked it- he got what he expected. Banchan-side dishes did not come out with the meal - guess the kitchen just didn't have their stuff together. The kimchi and bean sprouts were good- cucumbers too sweet- broccoli with white stuff in it- no go- didn't even try it. The potatoes with the sweet sauce on was good. Service was SLOW. They were not turning their tables quickly and efficiently. They ran out of little dishes so had none for our gyoza or sushi. I went today to the stone oak location and ordered a frequent favorite from the Huebner location because I was at a nearby hospital. I ordered a beef bulgogi lunch box and the roll combo number two. It was at the end of the lunch opening so by the time I got a chance to open it they were closed for their midday break. Im not sure what this is but I am sure that it's not the stone oak roll, the spicy shrimp roll or the California roll that I ordered. I called once they opened back up at 4:30 to tell them about it and they said if I want to bring it back they'd offer a refund. I wasnt looking for a refund, but maybe a future credit or discount. To make me leave the hospital again to bring back food they screwed up is unreasonable. I don't eat raw fish, I'm a crab and shrimp type. This went in the garbage along with my desire to ever return to this location. read more

This is our favorite place in San Antonio for Japanese food as well as Korean food. The sushi is legit.... fresh and made right (this is a rare thing in San Antonio). I love the tonkatsu (deep-fried pork cutlet). My wife loves the Jjam-ppong, which is a spicy noodle soup with vegetables and squid, shrimp, & mussels. Served with pickled daikon and kimchi. We went for dinner on Mother's Day and it was empty for the 4-9 dinner time. We received fast service and our server did come to check if we were ready to order multiple times but we needed some time to go over the menu first. We ordered the tempura appetizer and crab mix salad to start. The tempura was a bit sad looking but still tasted really good. I thought the crab mix salad was going to be like a Kani salad with shredded cucumber and carrots like I've normally seen but it was crab mix, sauces, masago and crunchies over a bed of lettuce salad mix. Still was really good just not what I was expecting. We got a Stone Oak roll and a "Rainbow dragon" roll. The stone oak roll was pretty good (even though there is a typo on the menu with the same roll twice). The rainbow dragon was also supposed to come with sauces on top but we received a normal Rainbow roll with no sauces or what was listed. We ended our night with a Oreo Tempura. We received 5 Oreos which I feel like is a generous amount (in a good way ) and one small scoop of ice cream. The Oreos were warm and had a good crunch to them. The dish was drizzled in chocolate and a fruit syrup. Overall I was wanting a nice mom and pop sushi place for Mother's Day and got what I asked for. I do wish the menu had a quick revision. I am going to come back to try the Korean dishes as I've been searching for a place that has jjajangmyeon! Next time I plan on getting Kimbap, jjajangmyeon, beef bulgogi and possibly some tteok-boki. read more

Owned and operated by koreans this restaurant also serves all varieties of korean food. My favorite item during the lunch special is sushi roll combo 3 which consists of 3 full 8 piece rolls for $9. But here's the reason why I'll soon be going back: The Price. Simply you can't get a better price for sushi of this quality in San Antonio. No it's not the absolute best, but certainly comparable in price. So before you buy that bargain-basement sushi at the HEB-Plus, make sure you check out Sushi Express first. Pros: One stop Japanese / Korean cuisine. If you can't find what your looking for here. Go to Japan or Korea. This establishment has a vast selection of sushi. We decided to make the trek across town to try out this restaurant 2.9.16, during rush hour traffic. In the back of my mind I was thinking this place better be decent. Decent? They blew my expectations out the water. The minute you walk into the establishment you are greeted and given a choice of seating. It was the middle of the week so keep that in mind. There are two separate menus one that has all the Korean meals and the other with sushi. I highly recommend you download the PDF menu ahead of time so you can have a general idea of what you want. The staff (Jamal) was extremely helpful. We started off with appetizer Razor which consisted of thinly sliced sashimi (salmon) topped with jalapeno, Sriracha and yuzu sauce. Let me tell you a good way to start off your dinner or lunch! There are other choices of sashimi listed on menu for example Yellow Tail, Tuna etc. In addition we also had the Sushi dinner, Sesame Chicken and Salmon skin roll. All the selections where delicious. The desert (Banana Tempura) was the icing on the cake. A party of four was completely satisfied with the meal. I noticed that they had bottles of Soju, Sake and wine lined up against the wall as decoration. Yes I did say Soju. I was told that they are in the process of acquiring Blueberry flavored Soju from Korea. I had to pass in the Soju, since I was driving and my tolerance of Soju has diminished since my Korea days. Our overall experience was awesome. I have been to several Sushi and Korean restaurants in San Antonio and Korea. This little hidden gem has moved to the top of our lists to fulfill our Korean and Sushi needs. I'm a little sad because I know Sushi Express will not stay hidden for long.
