Ahh, Sushi Garden, my childhood home away from home. I'm biased about this place for a few reasons. First, it is actually pretty decent sushi on the Southside. That's rare. Hell, finding decent ANY kind of food on the Southside used to be a hassle! Secondly, my mom knows the owners and I got plenty of extra food to take home everytime I came. And finally, there is just something so homey about the place. It is small and cramped but still retains an aura of comfort. They have the (tiny) obligatory sushi bar where you can hang out with the masterminds behind the rolls. They have regular booths available and even private rooms. The food is always fresh and the waitresses are competent. With all the little sushi joints popping up on the Southside, I thought that the restaurant would take a hit, but really the quality here is so much better than many of the new places that the regulars just keep coming back. Sure it doesn't look as fancy as some of the newer places, but quality is quality. I can't wait to go home and get some fresh fish again! read more

The service was pretty good and the food was yummy too. Their prices were pretty expensive. Some examples - $10 for only 6 pieces of gyoza and $25 for kalbi. They gave us a small little plate of edamame as a free appetizer (there were 4 of us and it was probably the size of one serving) and when we asked for more we had to pay $7 for a large plate of it. And another part I was disappointed at was no free refills on shirley temples. My husband joked that since it's on the south side of Anchorage they cater to the rich people, LOL. Overall it was okay, it definitely wouldn't be my first choice to go if I was craving for sushi. read more

Kalbi was good but their chicken teriyaki was dry as heck. This was also the first place I've been that served part of their chicken teriyaki dish with bones wings. I thought the atmosphere was pretty neat with their booths and service was all right. My overall experience was average at best. read more

We love this restaurant. My kids ask to go here every day. The food is probably a 4 in the lower 48 but it's a 5 compared to other sushi I've had in anchorage. The servers are awesome and they give a great spread. This is our family's go to spot for eating out. read more

The only reason I give it 4 stars is because some of the lady's that work there are not very friendly, plus they take advantage of them speaking another language...so they will speak English until it comes to you having an issue with something on their end. The Mongolian beef used to be my favorite in Alaska. The sushi is prepared very well and I've never gotten sick on it. Very kind people, they normally cheer "Hello!" as you walk in the door. We went to sushi garden for an early dinner yesterday. VERY good. I would highly recommend for tempura and the Kalbi Ribs were delicious! I should have ordered one for my mother and I to split. The portion was huge. I thought the prices pretty normal for what you get, warm cloth at beginning of meal, soup, salad, watermelon, cinnamon tea all comes with meal. Service was also excellent. The only reason it's not getting 5 stars...a glass of wine was 11.95! Now that's expensive. Easily double (or more) the price of your meal if you have a couple of glasses. Needless to say I didn't get a glass of wine with meal. Would still go back for those ribs and gyoza appetizers! YUM! read more

The atmosphere is nice, and seating is usually pretty quick. The reception is friendly and polite, which is very nice. Seating was very nice, however due to the location the view was terrible. It was pretty clean there, and so was the bathroom. Though the bathroom is small. The food was pretty good. Not the best sushi I've ever eaten, but pretty good. The squid they served didn't seem all too fresh though. The food was good, but my biggest complaint here is the beverages. If you order a soda, you will have a glass. However they will give you a CAN! You pay about $2 for that can of soda whereas you can pay less than that or a little bit more for a 40 oz! They need to invest in either a soda fountain machine, or pour the soda from 2 Liter bottles into pitchers. The cans really do ruin the ambiance as everything else is aesthetically pleasing. Overall this is a place I would solemnly go to, maybe if I was in the mood for quick sushi but didn't want to go into down town Anchorage. They should fix the cans, $2 for a can is outrageous. The staff were very friendly and polite. The seating was comfortable but the view outside was bland and bleak. I'd go here again, but not as often as I would probably like too. read more

This restaurant is one of the best sushi places to go to in Anchorage. The food is delicious and savory, and the variety to choose from is great. Your meal is always delivered to you in a timely manner, and the miso soup is to die for. The sushi is actual genuine sushi as well, not that American sushi that tastes way too sweet. The atmosphere is also very calming and relaxing, from the fish tank to the decor on the walls and ceiling. The seating is very nice as well, the booths being made of soft material. They even have forks and spoons for those who do not know how to operate with chopsticks. The downfalls of this place however do exist. The soft drinks (soda) are served in measly cans for $2 a pop! That's a little outrageous if you ask me. The surrounding area of the restaurant also degrades the place a little more. The sounds of cars whizzing by can ruin a romantic date with someone if you decided on this place to dine. The music also doesn't line up to the theme of the restaurant, but it's not bad. It's typical radio music you'd hear while driving down the road. Overall Sushi Garden is a banger and shouldn't be skipped if you're a sushi fanatic. Horrid. We have been here several times over the years and it was okay before, the rolls were expensive but on the larger side. I ordered the crunch roll today and the shrimp in it was raw. It was completely covered in soggy tempura bits and the roll itself was cold and soggy. The rice was too wet and gummy. I ate one bite before noticing the raw shrimp and wouldn't eat another bite. My husband got the jb roll and although he's gotten it several times before and liked it, said it was the worst sushi he's had in anchorage. It had a nasty tasting sauce on it that wasn't on it before and his rice was soggy as well. Then they just scooped tobiko on the top in chunks so he had to use a fork to scrape it off. I asked the lady as we were leaving if the chef was new and she said no, she'd have to "really talk to him about this". Never going back. This place has gotten worse and worse over the years and now it just seems unsanitary and careless. Try Haru or Pete's instead. read more

I tried Sushi Garden on a whim, and I sure am glad! It's the best sushi in town, and the sushi chefs are true masters at the art. I was very happy to sit at the sushi bar and have the pleasure to talk to the chef, Kevin. The rolls I ordered were made to perfection. I had two hand rolls- SMT and spicy tuna...both fresh tasting and delicious. On my way out I told the waitress I was so happy to find a great sushi bar, and I would be back soon with my husband....we went back within that same week. One thing I love is when a sushi place gives you a warm cloth as a gesture of hospitality, and this place does! We ordered 4 rolls (can't remember the exact names) and all of them were awesome. The hubs is hard to impress, and he and I were delighted with the service and goodies! On our way out I got a sweet hug goodbye from waitresses...a lovely gesture at the end of a fantastic meal! Pretty pricey, but a pretty extensive menu. No fountain soda. The sushi was good but had a lot of sauce, so if you don't like that style this might not be the best place. Service was whirlwind fast, almost too fast, but friendly. The tempura plate was so expensive but you get a lot of food and it was very well done. The most memorable part was the tempura Oreos. Maybe new management is the reason behind my expensive and horrible experience. Two take out lunches were no better than the grocery store Chinese deli with a large container of deep fried chicken pieces with sweet/sour sauce that was only sour and likely meant for pork. The other large container was of stir fried vegetables with carrot hunks that were not cooked. There was another large container of rice but nothing else that usually accompanies a visually pleasing Japanese lunch. Never again. read more

If you don't eat sushi and sit at the bar don't go their. I went with my husband and friends . The rolls were brought to our table. They were very burned on the bottom do we turned them over and asked for new ones. When we told the waitress she said turn it over, there the top is not burnt. Really, like the burnt flavor isn't all the way through. I ordered chicken teriyaki with tempura vegetables and shrimp. The chicken was moist but had very little flavor. The tempura vegetables were not done and the shrimp was not deveined. (Just horrid) ... My husband had chow mien, teriyaki chicken and shrimp. In this case shrimp meant 1 shrimp! He said his food was so salty he could not eat it. The most curious thing the waitress asked how long my husband and I had been together, weird since the only conversation we had had was about the burnt roll. The waitress was kind of rude for an oriental person working in a restaurant. In my passed experiences they are usually very nice. Well I am afraid this restaurant is off are list.
