After months of trying to get my girlfriends together, we were finally able to get to this place. And it was great. The prices were reasonable, the portions were very generous. We got there at about a quarter to six in the evening and were seated right away. But we just missed the rush, because as soon as we sat down a crowd at gathered at the entrance and were all waiting to be seated. As far as the wait after we ordered it wasn't long at all. This past Monday my family and I decided it was time to give the restaurant a try, several friends recommended it. From the minute we walked in to the minute we left we were nothing but disappointed. We arrived at the restaurant around 7p.m. the place wasn't crowded and we were seated immediately. As we walked to our seats we noticed garbage on the floor, several employees walked past these two piles of trash, never stopping to clean it up. The restaurant staff were to busy watching the television. The service from our waitress was terrible; upon being seated, we were never told of any specials or recommendations, nor were we asked if we wanted to order any appetizers. Dirty dishes remained on our table the entire meal, I ended up stacking up the plates just to give us room on the table. Our drinks remained empty, till the end of the meal at which time we were asked if we wanted a refill, the waitress never asked if we wanted any to order any deserts . After finishing the meal we waited a good ten minutes just for our bill. As for the food, it was just so so.... Not off the charts, not something I will have cravings for. To my surprise, I have had Sushi from the Modesto Raley's Grocery Store that was much better! To set the record straight, Modesto DOES have awesome Japanese restaurants and Sushi restaurants, Sushi Garden Isn't one of them . read more

The last time I reviewed this place was just over four years ago. Now the restaurant still has that same feeling of an upscale sushi restaurant especially for Modesto, but it has since grown from the best to just among the rest. I'd say the sushi is still of good quality but it seems more now than ever that they are overpriced and dependent on sauces to make their sushi taste okay. This place is AMAZING! I come from San Francisco and have eaten at many Japanese Restaurants. The chefs at this restaurant are GREAT! If you are daring you should definately order something off of the menu. This can be achieved by sitting at the bar rather than a table and asking the chef to make you something HE/SHE would eat. The best sushi in Modesto in my opinion. They have amazing food and great customer service every time i have been there. From their edamame to their nigiri it is all good. The rolls are outstanding and two of my favorites are the Tempura Scallop roll and the Modesto roll. Both have sliced almonds sprinkled on top which adds nice texture. I used to try other places around town but i was always wishing I would've stuck with Sushi Garden. I don't make that mistake any more! read more

I went here with a bunch of acquaintances for a friend's birthday. First off, our driver couldn't handle the steering wheel for crap so it took us for-flippin'-ever to find this place hiding in an inconspicuous corner in the parking lot. Anyway... First impression was definitely on the plus side. My quick scan throughout the restaurant (juggling friends of friends at the same time) gave me the impression that it was a clean and orderly -- a must in a sushi restaurant! It had a nice ambiance to it, but not quite date-worthy. Maybe because every table was filled when we went. Hmm. I was pleasantly surprised when the miso soup was served on the house as it rightfully should have. The service was good -- our waitress was a bit on the slow side but it was a busy night and she was still all smiles and willing to serve. Easily forgiven. Ah, and she thought ahead and asked us if each of us wanted separate tabs. I'm sure that saved a helluva lot of time at the end. Prices weren't bad but not the lowest you could find. What did I order... I think it was the spicy something. But that doesn't matter much, since the group decided to just share their dishes. Everything was pretty spectacular, although I wasn't impressed with the size of their rolls -- too big to be considered "skillful". This place is not good. Been there twice just to make sure. I watched them use pre made rolls to fill orders and they over sauce everything. Everything tastes the same and there is no originality. This is pure honesty. Osaka or Miki is much better. Even the grocery store is better. read more

I've tried Osaka, JP Asian Fusion, Kobe, and most recently Kimoto on McHenry. Sushi Garden is in a league of their own. The fish is always fresh and delicious. I usually eat Nigiri or Sashimi, accompanied by a Tiger roll. The portions are smaller than Osaka, but I much prefer quality to quantity. If you want quantity, go to Kobe. Friendly, relaxed, positive vibe. Servers were somewhat attentive, although it took a LOOOONG time to get our order ready (at least 25 minutes for our small party of 4). The quality of the sushi rolls left a lot to be desired. The presentation and portion sizes were also quite disappointing, for the $12 to $16 they charged for each roll. Honestly, and I hate to say this, the quality of the sushi here was no better than what you would get at a Safeway or Raley's at 1/4 the price ....and NO the Modesto Roll was no good at all. It was just a regular sushi roll with shredded almonds sprinkled on top. Nothing special. Overall, 4 stars for the service, 2 stars for the food. read more

I wish I could give this place 10 stars. We have eaten at all the sushi places in Modesto and Sushi Garden is by far, hands down the best sushi in town. No one comes close. I am really sorry to say that Sushi Garden has gone a bit down hill of late. The sushi is still good, but the service is much slower, and somewhat unreliable. We must have had 4 or different 5 wait staff delivering food to our table, and none of them filled our water glasses. Also, the last 3 times we visited sushi garden, we were seated near extremely noisy children. I know this isn't the restaurant's fault, but if I'm paying $20+ per person for dinner, I'd like to have a conversation that isn't repeatedly punctuated by a shrieking baby or shouted over a gameboy with the volume turned all the way up. A good sushi bar shouldn't have a food court atmosphere. The hostess needs to learn how to ask obnoxious customers to leave. read more

I'm not a huge sushi fan, but Sushi Garden is one of my favorite restaurants. The California roll is my favorite because I'm scared of anything raw. They don't put cucumber, which I like, and it's only $5. But the real reason I love this place is the teriyaki steak. It's phenomenal. They use rib eye steak and a rich delicious sauce with their perfectly cooked jasmine rice. They also give you some surprisingly good potatoe salad. The owner always comes over to greet my family. The only problem is it gets really busy on weekends, so try to get there a little early. read more

This is hands-down the BEST sushi restaurant in Modesto! HOWEVER: their service is hit or miss and they can often come across as rude. Sometimes I'll be in and out in 20 minutes with remarkable service, and other visits I'll feel as though I have been forgotten about and it can take an hour. The place is clean and nice, though it is small which can really drive wait times up. They are also horrible about answering their phone, so it is hard to order to pick up or to ask how long the wait is. But the food never lets me down! However, the rolls I ordered were super small and dinky. I got a $14 roll that was super small. I was still hungry so I ordered another $14 roll and that was also tiny. We were not impressed by the presentation of the rolls, and what really shocked us what the size of the rolls. For the price we paid the rolls were extremely small. We came between Christmas and New Years so that could be the cause of our subpar visit. BUT still there is no excuse to order and be completely ignored for an hour and a half until our order finally started to arrive. We received 2 plates out of a party of 10. Then the party of 8 that was seated after us and ordered way after us received all their food then a half hour later the rest of the food came out except my husband's sashimi plate. He waited for what seemed to be forever and finally had to tell someone they forgot it. No drink refills, long waits, forgotten food, sushi that was so so in flavor, and bill troubles all lead us to decide not to come back. read more

another great place for sushi in modesto! i believe it's owned by the same person who owns Shomi's in Stockton. watch out b/c this place is always crowded and they don't ever take reservations. my favorite roll here is the shrimp tempura roll which is enormous. i also like the tonkatsu and fried shrimp combination plate. if you tell them that you're going to share it with another person, they'll put it on 2 separate plates for you which i think is really considerate. sitting at the bar is fun b/c you can watch the sushi chefs frenetically make sushi and see the rice machine thingamajig that flattens the rice for each sushi roll. oh and don't forget to check out their bathrooms with the above-the-counter sink! read more
