Now the star of the show was the sake nigiri. I love salmon. Like LOVEEE. This place by far has one of the best Sake nigiri I have ever had. We found this restaurant about 6 months ago and it immediately became our favorite in the city. We always order the Salmon Citrus Roll because yum! The service is great, fish is fresh, ambiance is on point, and the cute outdoor area in the back is charming (no tables out there, but seeing fun things out the big back windows makes the place more interesting). It doesn't have a big flashy entrance because it doesn't need it. Anyone who lives in the neighborhood knows it's the best. read more

Alright, read on for my typical ranting: So, we came here with friends and they paid, so these prices are straight off the menu. Also, between us we had 3 kids so I wasn't paying as much attention as I normally do to the food and taking notes. So, I only got the following... 1. Chicken Karaage Udon $15.95: The udon was definitely overcooked and too soft. Also overall it was super plain--just broth and yucky noodles. The karaage came on the side and was terrible--under seasoned and boring. At least the meat wasn't dry. 1/10 2. Hokkai Don $36.95 "spot prawn, snow crab, salmon, scallop, sea urchin": So, as I said, expect all their sushi/sashimi to be excellent. Everything was very fresh and what I care about a lot--the rice is perfect. I literally mean it when I say at least 90% of sushi places I've been to have had bad rice (this would be the equivalent of an Italian place serving mushy spaghetti--dunno how it's even a thing). This was good rice. So that's something. Well, also, this $37 bowl is one of the cheapest sushi/sashimi combos on their menu. 10-12 pieces of Omakase will cost you $65. Anyway, I thought this was excellent if you can get over the price for a medium sized bowl. 9/10 3. Goeman Roll $16.95 "unagi & cucumber, topped w/tuna, avocado, snow crab, tobiko, sweet sauce, & spicy mayo": I don't remember much except it was good too. 4. Mixed Tempura $14.95: I did take notes on this, and I wrote, "Super sad looking. Tiny." So, there you have it. 1/10 5. Sake (Salmon) Sushi 2pc $7.50: Again, excellent. Came here after tonight after an evening of viewing Bouquets to Art 2018 at the de Young Museum. My friend said it just opened recently and that she really wanted to check it out. Why not, as we're always up for sushi, preferably a good omakase meal, but this'll do on a late rainy night. FOOD: - Halibut Collar: Get this, if you like fish collars! It was very meaty, with nicely grilled fins, minus the frozen taste you often get in lesser Japanese restaurants. - Rainbow Roll: Nice with fresh fish, although the rolls seemed noticeably smaller than you'd find in other other places. - Uni: These were uni from Mendocino, as opposed to Hokkaido. Very fresh, and I really liked how the uni itself was perfectly chilled. Note though, it was $14.00 for 2 pieces. We split it, so to translate, it was $7.00 for a few seconds of Heaven in my mouth. Literally, but so worth it! - Sashimi plate (10 piece): Beautifully presented. Meaty, fresh chunks of fish, perfect for sharing. I particularly liked the sea bream. I remember having my first Omakase here and it was a lovely experience with fresh fish (chef choice) delicately arranged and presented with on a wooden block garnished with the right amount of shiso leaves and radish. The presentation and colors were a feast for the eyes. So remembering my first visit, I came here especially for the Omakase 12 pc. When I received the plate, I thought they gave me the wrong dish and was surprised it looked so sad and bland. Not even arranged or presented like they were chef choice pieces. Having said that, all the other dishes we ordered were great. The Chirashi Don looked amazing and tasted very fresh $26. Sad part was, it looked better than my $65 Omakase :( I have included photos of my first Omakase here and the one I received on this visit. I hope the sushi chef can compare and make some adjustments as to how to present deluxe chef choice pieces and make them more special than regular sashimi, after all we are paying extra $, so at least put some effort into the presentation. My boyfriend and I, this is our go-to place for omakase and rolls! There is a quiet serene ambiance when you walk in. They also have a little garden in the back. Specials posted on the wall are for 2 pieces of sushi. $9 for 2 small pieces of Hamachi is overpriced. Our bill for 9 people hit $300. And we were still hungry enough to go out for gelato afterwards. The ribeye steak tasted absolutely wonderful, but it was not a large steak. See the photos. If the portions were more generous, this place would be 5 stars for sure. One great thing though was the ability to get a reservation through Yelp! At 6:00 on a Sunday night, we started searching for a place for our group to go eat. Stopped by Goemon's while walking down the street, and from the outside the restaurant looks much smaller. I was surprised by the authenticity of the staff and the setup. Being Japanese, this is always something that I take pride in seeing in a Japanese restaurant, especially in a city like San Francisco. We were able to talk to the staff in Japanese, and feel at home. The menu is also very extensive, with a massive sushi and fish selection, several other dishes. We ordered the salmon dinner special, and vegetable tempura udon. Definitely fulfilled my craving for Japanese food. Will be stopping back next time I am in the sunset. read more

Ended up coming here after plans for izakaya sozai fell through, still left satisfied! I tried the tonkatsu ramen, sashimi, salmon skin roll, California roll, spicy tuna roll, and salmon teriyaki. Tonkatsu ramen - good rich flavor in the broth, ramen had a good chewy texture. Was a little too salty though, especially the piece of pork. Sashimi - the fish here is FRESH!! Really high quality grade fish they use and I'd definitely recommend getting this here over the ramen California roll - was alright. Crab was real and tasty but not the biggest fan of Cali rolls Salmon skin roll - has that nice crunch from the salmon skin, pretty good Spicy tuna roll - better than most spicy tuna rolls I've had Salmon teriyaki - salmon was delicious except I felt that the outside was a bit too charred. The waiter here was so friendly, very good service. We had some issues with food coming out poorly spaced (last person got their food about 10 minutes after the ramen came out, Cali roll came out after I already finished my meal). I don't know how we ended up here, but we had some really good sushi. We sat at the bar and it was fun to watch the chefs make all the sushi. We started it the miso black cod which was delicious, flaky and so tender. We got a few sushi rolls to share between the two of us. Everything that we got was really good and the ingredients were super fresh. The only sad thing was that they rolls were kind of small and we weren't super full afterwards (usually we're good with about 3 rolls). Had a reservation, checked in early and still had to wait 50+ minutes to get seated. Food was average. Out of all the things we had, 2 appetizers, a sushi boat for 2, only the appetizer tako wasabi stood out. Otherwise the fish was water-logged and sushi/nigiri tasted like nothing. I am going to miss quality sushi when I move out the Bay Area. This spot always hits the spot. We always end up here when we don't want to leave the Sunset, yet want rolls and nigiri. It's low-key enough that the wait is short, but also decent. Not every single sushi meal needs to be omakase guys. Sometimes you just need regular meals for regular people. This past weekend we rolled 4 rolls and it came with free edamame. Normally we order: board special nigiri (fish we've never had or just specialty fish) salmon belly, hamachi/salmon kame, sake, and other delights. This place gives you the best of both worlds, but also the severs always recommend good sake to go with our orders. Walked by this location randomly one day and bookmarked it,and I'm so glad I did! Staff was super friendly during our visit. We usually go to EBISU on 9th & Irving but wanted to try some new spots. We got salmon, seabream, Ikura, and mackerel Nigiri, the seabream was legit! Nice smokey taste with great texture. The Crispy Roll was interesting for sure. The whole roll is essentially fried. Spicy Tuna roll was a pleasant surprise! Had a bit of a kick to it, almost tasted like there was a curry spice to it. Not bad at all and would definitely get it again. Staff again was super friendly and attentive. We sat by the window and had a great view of the outdoor garden. Small house like opening which really opens up as you enter. Everyone seems to notice the nice Japanese garden in the back behind a large window. I even joked with the server where's the koi? Very fresh seawater trout. Overall I found the food portion to price point to be on the smaller side. Especially the miso black cod and I feel that they didn't grill the grill items enough which also included chicken thigh and king oyster mushroom but did keep them juicy. Great sushi place on irving. We came here for dinner on a weeknight - place was relatively empty but started filling up throughout our meal. Atmosphere is perfect for a date or casual night out with friends and interior is decorated nicely. We ordered 3 rolls and the sashimi salad, fish was fresh and flavors were good. The four seasons roll uses cucumber instead of nori and rice, presentation was beautiful! Portions are a bit small for the price. I'll be back to try their other rolls or their omakase. Service was good, waters were refilled regularly. I wouldn't consider this place fancy, but it's definitely a step up from some of the other places nearby like perilla. I'm no sushi connoisseur but I am a big, big fan of Goemon. Me and two of my girlfriends wanted to get dinner one night and frankly, they suck at picking places, and I had goal in mind that I wanted a place that was far removed from our typical haunts around the downtown/FiDi areas where we work and instead find somewhere closer to an area where we actually live. True to Yelp junkie form I perused maps and clicked on every single place I could find within a mile radius of my ideal location. I found about 5 places I was willing to give a shot and let those ladies decide from there and so we settled on Goemon. Things to love: 1) Reservations!! We didn't even need one when we got there because we went pretty late in the evening, but whatever. It's nice to know you won't have to wait long once you get there. 2) Delicious and reasonably priced sushi. And they REALLY catered to my love of salmon. They even have a salmon lover roll. Duh, I got it. And it was bomb. 3) Large sake menu. And our server was really lovely and knowledgable when we didn't know what to order. We poorly explained what we like and she narrowed it down to a couple of choices and let us taste them before we ordered. I have feeling that's not typically how they go about it, but it was a slow night and she was the sweetest person I've ever met. 10/10 all around for food, decor, and service! This place might be one of my favorite sushi places in SF now. The sushi tasted fresh and was reasonably priced (non-specialty rolls range from $6ish-$9ish and the chirashi bowl was $18), the decor was classy and artistic (see photos), and there was even a back outdoor garden. If you're coming as a party of 3-4, I would recommend getting seats by the windows at the very back to get a view of the garden outside. Everything felt extremely thought out; the waitress even came by to describe the restaurant's soy sauce (which was honestly the best soy sauce I had ever had) and the wasabi burned through my nose (that's how I know it's not from a tube). They even offered sugar free sake in their extremely extensive sake menu lol. This place had some couple date nights and some family outings with toddlers/very small children, so it seems to cater well to all audiences. Honestly, I'm surprised Goemon wasn't jam packed on a Sunday at 6pm. Will definitively be back again. read more

This review is for takeout: I've gone here before and frankly it's a bit pricy for the size and even quality. For a 15pc Sashimi ($45) and 3 rolls they gave me half a container of wasabi (the other half was ginger) and one small thimble sized container (almost 3/4 full) of soy sauce/no chopsticks... but I have my own. The wasabi was bland and quite disappointing, the little there was. The sashimi was 50/50 on tasty vs bland. The cuts were decent sized. I love hamachi and it was more brown than pink. Rolls are fairly small/skinny and none wow-ed me w flavor. I'm not sure what the rave is all about honestly. I was giving it another shot but this was prob my last time. $100 tab and disappointed. I'm glad others have had a better experience, this just wasn't for me. read more

Very good sashimi offering. We tried the moriawase and everyone had their favorites, between the salmon, hamachi, and sea bream. We tried a few rolls (spicy tuna, spider, caterpillar), but the hands down favorite was the four seasons roll, highly recommend that one. We tried some standard nigiri sushi as well, saba, unagi, uni, shiro maguro, but they were only "ok". The sake flight was excellent, with a variety of really top notch daiginjo sake, can't remember the name of them now, but I remember the middle one had an interesting melon aftertaste, and the last one was very clean and bright. They were kind enough to hear our feed back and bring us another cut but it was better but still not by much Shsito peppers were soggy and tiny and came with about 8 The shrimp tempura was mostly tempura Rib eye sSkewer was pretty good! Albacore jalapeño roll was pretty good too. Miso soup was bland- not hot enough either. They did seat us at the table we wanted, and even changed the sad country music songs to our requested bossa nova-- for about 30 min. But then went back to sad country and then to karaoke by an employee who asked for requests but didn't take any and I told him it's my boyfriends bday and nothing ,followed by a loud you tube video on how to make drip coffee. We were pleasantly surprised to be seated almost immediately (outdoors when restrictions were tighter) on a Friday night. Usually this would make me kind of wary, BUT... Any kind of anxiety was immediately crushed when our servers approached us. She patiently answered our questions about sake and beer, sharing her recommendations for the types of sushi we wanted.
