Wowee, good thing I didn't Yelp this place before I went...I'm happy to report back that my experience was a-ok. I went with a party of 5 on a weeknight and had a decent experience. All of the sushi rolls that I had tasted fresh and delicious and we had a bunch of them! Spider roll, philadelphia roll, and some others. Our server was ok, she wasn't very friendly but she was attentive. My one complaint besides our BLAH server was that there aren't many specialty rolls on the menu. Sometimes I wanna go out and spend $11 on a seven different types of fish and three sauces roll, and they just really have the basics. The whole Highland neighborhood (where you can find Sushi Hai) was a pleasant suprise on my last visit to Denver (Thanksgiving at my brother's). Sushi Hai is a combo sushi bar (upstairs, front room and back room - both good-sized) and a bar bar (downstairs). All the service was friendly, from the servers to the barstaff. We went mid-week: it was pretty low-key although still fairly filled-out; I hear that it it can get pretty packed on most weekends, so make some reservations. Ok, I have been to this place like a hundred million times since it opened. I've not been all that impressed-ever. I am a Sushi snob. I began eating Sushi with my father, when the only Sushi place that existed in Colorado; was in Sakura Square in the 1960s. I have changed my mind. I recently sat at the bar upstairs and the Chef went way outta his way to impress me. I dunno, maybe he was flirting but who cares? Maybe he is a new chef? I had five to six different sushi items and even took photos of the food because it was so beautiful and tasted equally as fresh and flavorful. I have been reformed. I hang out in the Highlands a lot and have been back since and he created the same masterpieces. I am hooked and who knows, maybe I'll slip him my phone number. Nah...I really like being single. For some reason I always want to add an exclamation mark to the end of Hai! when I mention this place. THE RESTAURANT: It's nice inside. I especially like the downstairs bar area. It's cozy and the bartenders are almost too friendly. THE MENU: I have only had sushi and seaweed salad from the menu, but they offer many entrees as well. THE SUSHI: It's okay. Sushi was ok.. Nothing bad, nothing great. Not sure I would travel far to go. The one weird thing is they have a "vegan roll" which I thought was awesome as I am vegan. However under the ingredients for it, it lists a honey sauce. Honey is not vegan, any vegan would know that. And you would think a chef would know that. Customer service is unmatched! Sushi was delicious, our food was on our table in 15 minutes. Super fast! It's has such a beautiful ambiance to it. Perfect for a date! So..I dont usually write reviews, but, but after our night i felt compelled, we really had a good time. I had been researching places in the area for sushi, and i found mixed reviews for Sushi Hai, but i really like this area so we went for dinner last week. Everything was awesome! The service was outstanding, our server was friendly and extremely helpful with the menu, knew the sake and even brought us a few samples to help us choose (we ended up going with her recomendation- Hatsumaggo?) I really appreciated the fact that she didnt direct us to the most expensive, in fact pointed out what a great deal it was! The appetizer was amazing- calamari...sweet, spicy crunchy and perfect. The rolls were delish, and when we asked about the best ones, she starred the house favorites, again helpful. i would definately go back, our waitress (glasses-but i forget her name:( )mentioned it can get kind of crazy on the weekends-not surprising since the place is huge! So maybe its better during the week or slower nights? The only thing i didnt get was the water on request? Its Colorado-eveyone wants water dont they? I used to work in a restaurant years ago and everyone always got water right away-its like the first point of service. If you want bottled water, you ask when they take your drink order. Strange. But my only complaint! Ill check back and review the next time i go, because i think this place deserves some love! read more

I adore sushi but this place makes me not want to eat it for a long time. Tastes like somebody rolled these 6 months ago, put them in the freezer, and then heated them back up today. I've been a fan/patron of Sushi Hai for a few years now. I will admit, the service can be spotty and slow, though I feel like it's improved in the past year... or maybe I'mjust used to it by now... in any case, the fish is really good quality, good portions, and the happy hour is pretty decent. I enjoy the atmosphere in the dining room, not a fan of sitting at the sushi bar as of late, and my sushi craving is always very satisfied. No visit for me is complete without a #9 roll, and Las Vegas roll is great, but if you are looking for just the fish, I find their yellow tail and salmon (shake) sashimi to hit the spot every time. read more

We came for Happy Hour to kill some time before a show. $3 drafts and hot sake, $5 rolls! We ordered a tuna poke tower, caterpillar roll, and vegas roll to share. The poke tower (the only item we ordered that was not on the happy hour menu) was the clear favorite, but the rolls were good as well. Definitely worth the price, though I'd hesitate to order the same at regular menu prices. Our server was knowledgeable, attentive, and patient with our slow ordering and rowdy behavior. My son Begged to try sushi this past weekend, but our schedule didn't allow for a proper sit down adventure....So ended up ordering a few rolls to go to settle his curiosity. Because 32nd street is so damn popular, I had to drop my wife off to pick up the grub and cruise around the block because there is no parking for a 20 foot truck on lowell. Her initial complaint is that there are 2 locations upstairs and down stairs. Apparently they staff doesn't talk to each other so there was confusion getting to where she needed to pick the food up at. Adapt and overcome!!! Got the food, Mama is back in the truck...away we go.... We ordered 3 very basic rolls, Phily roll, avocado salmon roll and veggie roll. I thought the Phili was the best, Avocado was good in its own right. I didn't like the veggie roll...mostly because i didn't like the way it smelled, taste was just ok... Thats about it. I'm not a sushi eater per se, but I eat Sushi...I'd go back and try something more adventurous if I had someone more adventurous to go with. Word. read more

This is a solid sushi place. I enjoy the presentation, and the rolls are quite good. The surf and turf roll is a favorite, as is the spicy tuna. Just enough spice, but loads of flavor. I do not like how close the tables are - there is absolutely no privacy, so don't expect to have a private conversation or even be physically able to tune out the people next to you. read more

Sushi Hai used to be our go to place. It was where we spent anniversaries and birthdays but it isn't what it used to be. We came in for our first night out without our new baby because we knew it would be good, efficient service. That has not changed, my wafer was always full and the food came out fast. This probably was in part due to the empty restaurant but it's still nice to feel taken care of. The fish wasn't as fresh as it used to be. I called ahead to see when they get their fish delivered but felt like maybe we got older fish. Halfway through our meal I just stopped eating the salmon- it wasn't the best and I was worried we would get sick. We both got home and had stomachaches but I don't think it was food poising because we weren't throwing up. When this place was busy back in the day the food was amazing and I think the difference is the lack of patrons and food turn over. We got a dessert of fried ice cream that was freezer burned and not at all worth eating. This used to be my favorite, but alas it sat there for too long. We try to hit this place on the off hours so we never have a service issue. It's great if you are with a group and not everybody is a sushi fan. The menu is diverse, and they actually describe themselves as a Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi Bar. We usually have a few rolls such Crunchy "shrimp" Roll, Dragon Roll and the Philadelphia Roll. We also order the Calamari with masago and a spicy ponzu sauce - a delightful surprise. Someone in the family will order the Salmon Burger and will rave about it. read more

The happenin' junction of the Highlands' 32nd and Lowell could really use a good sushi joint. Instead, they have a tempura joint. I was a little surprised that the sign out front said "Sushi", since the majority of their rolls are variation of tempura. The atmosphere's not too bad and about what you would expect for a spot in the Highlands; elegantly lit with saucy chicks in evening dresses for your hosts. But the food? Well, they offer a fish taco appetizer, so that should tell you something. This place was just okay. A couple years ago, I had a bad experience here and the worst service imaginable. This time, though, wasn't that bad. The staff was much friendlier and the food was better. Since I came here for a birthday dinner with 20 people in attendance, I decided to skip on the sushi since I have an avocado allergy and didn't want to take the chance with possible cross contamination. So instead I ordered gyoza, miso soup and beef short ribs. The short ribs were delicious and practically melted in my mouth. The soup was decent but the gyoza came out cold. Overall, not bad. We really enjoyed sushi hai. We came here with a gift card from Groupon and we left excited to come back. We shared the tofu ramen, the dinner veggie pastry, and some rolls. The ramen was great! The noodles tasted fresh and the broth was really nice. The pastry thing was so good. I went to Sushi Hai with my girlfriend after purchasing a deal from Living Social. We thought the sushi was absolutely wonderful! The prices seem somewhat high and we both agree that we probably will only return if another deal presents itself on Living Social or Groupon, just because it would be too expensive. I do feel that the service falls a little short. Our waitress was really nice, but not very attentive because it seemed like the was working way too many tables. I could tell the busy Friday night was stressful for her, but she remained very well composed and friendly when conversing with customers. Been here a couple times for their sushi and comedy night which they hold in the basement. Overall it's a good time and would recommend. I'm always a little sketched out with sushi in CO because we are in a land locked state, so who knows how far that fish has traveled and how long it took. But but my experience with their sushi was decent on both occasions. And their Udon noodles were pretty good too. My only issue with this place this time was their bathroom and that they made no attempt to close off their sketchy looking hallway in which they were bringing all the food out of. But the bathroom was atrocious. The door to one stall was off its hinge and out of order could have easily been knocked over. The second stall had empty toilet paper rolls sitting on their 8 dispensers and there was still not a single useable roll of toilet paper in there and the third looked like it just walked off a construction sight. Clearly this is not an authentic sushi restaurant. I've had better sushi from King Soopers. The crunchy roll had zero crunch. We couldn't tell the rolls apart because they were all mixed together. But stopping in for lunch on a Saturday afternoon, we discovered these yummy, char-grilled light chunks of fish wrapped in corn torts with marinated cabbage and (surprise!) a small supreme of orange. I've been here a few times over the years (makes me sound all old, eh) and it always been a good experience, not bad, but not over the top great. Well, here's my little story of the other night...... Made plans to go out with some friends and we decide on Sushi Hai. Way busy on a Saturday, so we were seated at a makeshift table AKA the pool table. Not bad I guess. Well, after 45 min of sitting with no service we were a little hungry and kind of bummed. Finally someone came and took our order for drinks, 30 min later no drinks. Again a different waitress stopped on by, took our drink orders, 20 min later no drinks still. We were having a good time so we didn't really notice all this poor service until we were starving. Once our drinks came, Jay (owner, manager, awesome dude) stopped by and told us that this never happens and that we should come with him to a nice table, comped half our food order, comped a bottle of sake, and put our order in straight away. Jay, you are for sure the man. Then brought shots for us at the end of our wonderful meal. Now I'm not saying all this so people go out and try to get free food, but I'm saying this because of what Jay did to correct a situation so that all of us would come back again. I've had a few experiences where we sat around for a long time and were ignored, but the response in those situations were never handled as well as here at Sushi Hai. I can safely say that I will be stopping back again. The sushi was pretty middle of the road as far as taste and quality of preparation. The spicy tuna and Las Vegas rolls were both very good in terms of flavor, while the California and unagi rolls left something to be desired. The assembly of each roll was a real weak point with non-uniform distribution of ingredients and varied size of each piece. We assumed the chef was new to his trade. We dined using a groupon and the total of $23 would have been appropriate for what we received (we also had a delicious calamari appetizer). But for the actual total of 53 dollars you can find sushi of equal or better quality elsewhere. read more
