Hidden gem indeed! We dined at Sushi Hana recently with the family in tow and was surprised at how packed it was at the 5 o'clock hour. We were quickly seated in a booth. Literally there are not even words to describe my satisfaction with this meal. From the atmosphere, to the service, to the food (flavor and presentation), to the quality. Every aspect gets a 5/5. This is how a restaurant should be run. The hospitality and the pride of their work beams through the server to the chef. I gave it two stars for the service and pineapple at the end of the meal. The food was expensive and tasteless. Personally I like sushi places that you can make your plate. Example: you pick off a list 3 Rolls 4 sushi and a 1/2 appetizer for $17.99 That's just my kind of place. The Food: Crab Rangoon taste like onion powder on steroids. Miso soup taste like chicken broth with potatoes and mushrooms in it. The rolls where alright nothing to write home about. Fish was fresh the rice was the right texture, but even the wasabi didn't have the kick it needed. The Udon chicken was tasteless maybe from the weak base sauce. Parking is terrible backing out onto Gravois is never a good thing. Outcome: All in all, I won't be returning. read more

My wife and I finally tried this spot out. It's in an odd little spot, you'll miss it if you're not paying attention. It was packed when we got there, that was a good sign. You can tell they do a lot of take out business from the amount of drivers coming and going. Service was a little slow but I think they were short staffed. We ordered 4 rolls and an appetizer. Parking lot is a little small and near the road but it was manageable. Inside it is a classic Asian sushi restaurant, pretty decently sized and plenty of seating options. We ordered the spicy/special spider roll, a plain salmon roll, a hamachi hand roll, and a hamachi Kama bento box. Everything was reasonably priced and a GREAT lunch deal - highly recommend stopping by for lunch. Everything was round $12 or less. the fish was AMAZING!! So fresh and tasted real good. Was very surprised of their quality of fish and how good it was, especially for what it was worth. A unfortunately fault it a star because of the sushi rice. Was very disappointed that the sushi rice was hard and not as sweet/vinegary as most sushi rice is. the lack of flavor is fine but the fact that it was hard and tough to chew really dampened our sushi experience. However I lovedddd all the rolls and plates we ordered - yellowtail collar is a MUST!! So buttery and juicy and one of the best I've had in St. Louis. Having said that, I really know my sushi, as I'm visiting from LA and we have a plethora of great freshest fish sushi spots. We have been meaning to try this place based on the stellar reviews and finally stopped in last Friday night. They were extremely busy so there was a little bit of a wait to get seated but we are so very glad we decided to stick it out. We had the seaweed salad and spicy teriyaki tofu to start. The seaweed salad was perfectly dressed and the tofu had a good crust and flavorful sauce. For dinner we had a variety of nigiri and a couple of sushi rolls. The fish was all beautiful, fresh, meltingly tender. The rolls had all the right textures and flavors. We also tried their sake and were very happy with the selection. Brands that have long been favorites were available. Service was very friendly and prompt and overall we are very happy with this addition to our neighborhood. This restaurant has the most authentic Japanese food in St Louis. I'm so happy that it's close to home in South County and I don't have to drive too far. It's hidden in a modest part of town, but I was blown away by the authentic ambiance. It reminded me of Japan. It was my first time here and I was extremely impressed with the exceptional service from Justin, our server. I mentioned it was my birthday and he was very thoughtful and brought an extra bowl of miso soup and complimentary dessert and bordiga wine. This is one of the many few places that has my favorites, like Ikura. Justin is very familiar with the different onigiri, and I was impressed with his correct pronunciation. The best sushi restaurant in St. Louis is in Affton. Yeah, I'm surprised too, but there's no sense burying the lead. Sushi Hana is the most authentic, flavorful, friendly, welcome addition to the St. Louis food scene in forever. Great news for Afftonites like me, because I usually have to burn some gas or brave some traffic to get to great food. No more. Hallelujah! My wife and I saw a couple of stellar reviews of this new, tiny sushi place at 8809 Gravois Rd, and we were hopeful but dubious. I'm a 30-year sushi devotee and she's spent a good deal of time in Japan, so we usually end up hitting Bob's Seafood and making our own. But we figured we'd give it a chance, so we went there for lunch. An hour later, we couldn't stop smiling, and couldn't believe our fantastic luck. God has finally smiled upon Affton. We were delighted to have the chef greet us in Japanese, and gaining even more hope when the woman who brought our drinks (Sapporo, of course) spoke only Japanese, with just enough English to be polite. Despite their terrific-seeming lunch specials, we ordered off the a la carte menu: Salmon Avocado Roll, Spicy Tuna Roll, and several pieces of Nigiri, including Albacore (Shiromaguro), BBQ Eel (unagi), Fatty Tuna (toro), and Squid (Ika). We were welcomed with complimentary and delicious miso soup, which included tofu, mushrooms, and just the right amount of seaweed and miso. Things were looking bright. Our order came arrayed on a lovely wooden bridge, and again included a couple of complimentary items from the chef, including the most delicious albacore I've ever had. From item to item we went, each dish more delicious than the last. By the time we'd tasted everything, we couldn't believe what was happening. We simultaneously agreed: This is the best sushi we've ever had in St. Louis, hands down. Tokyo on Lindbergh, not even close. Nobu, no way. In fact neither of us can think even now of better sushi we've had, ever, anywhere (excluding her time in Japan). This sushi barely wanted a touch a soy sauce, so much exciting flavor did each piece boast (though their wasabi and ginger were delightful even in tiny amounts). What I most want to get across here is how every bite, EVERY item, was so, so flavorful. Hana Sushi's chef uses a combination of the choicest ingredients and some personal slicey-dicey magic to create, if I haven't mentioned this, THE BEST SUSHI I'VE EVER HAD. I'm hesitant to write this review, because I plan to go back a few times a week and don't like to wait (which on this visit we didn't; our order was ready shortly after our soup was finished). But good news must be shared. A couple of caveats to those raised on Missouri sushi: This isn't sushi with flavored mayo sprayed across it, and the portions aren't gas-station-sized. This is the real thing, with the best ingredients. Even the sesame seeds on the Spicy Tuna Roll were bursting with that delicious sesame flavor. The good news is that by the time my wife and I left, we couldn't stop smiling, were feeling that dreamy feel that comes with an amazing meal, and we couldn't imagine eating again today, all of which came to $43, including 2 large Sapporo beers at $7 each. Sushi Hana has only been there for two weeks. My advice is to get there immediately, as many times as possible, before Ian Froeb at the P-D and the RFT Best of St. Louis make it impossible to get a table. read more

Kind of hard to see from the street, this little gem has a small parking lot, but if you can find a spot, it'll be worth the hunt. With a mixture of Korean food and Japanese, all the dishes are very good! Tempura shrimp is a must! Don't worry you get shrimp and veggies! I've been a couple times, have only gotten the sushi boats.
