I've been having sushi cravings ever since I got back to Austin, and they were finally fulfilled at Sushi Junai. I came with a friend to catch up and we both ended up getting the all you can eat sushi buffet, as we thought it was the better deal. Rolls range from $8-15 so if you order 3, you've gotten your money's worth with the buffet! I honestly can't remember all the rolls we ordered, but we ordered 6 - 007, Ex-Girlfriend, Shrimp tempura, Salmon roll, and two more I can't remember, but I was STUFFED afterwards. We had to cancel our last two rolls (if you don't eat all your rolls, they'll charge you, so don't over-order!) The rolls themselves were delicious, each one beautifully made and presented. I'm not a huge raw sushi person, but I do love raw salmon and spicy tuna, so I would definitely recommend trying any rolls with those fish. Overall, service was friendly and the atmosphere was nice! Firstly, the location: It is close to the University of Texas campus and so attracts a lot of students. There isn't much you can do for parking though there is paid street parking around that area. If you are lucky, you can find one right outside the restaurant. I've been here at least 4 times and it is surprising that I decided to give it 1 star. I'll explain why... Interior: there is limited seating, if you arrive at around 12-12:30 or at some point after 6 (lunch starts around 11, dinner around 5) you may have trouble being seated. Because of the style of the restaurant (all you can eat) the wait is also incredibly long. If you arrive and there are not seats, you may as well leave and come back another time because you could be waiting for 1+ hrs. The restaurant is clean and well kept, just tiny. Service: the service here is incredibly slow. It's not really the fault of the waiters, it seems there is just a limited number of sushi chefs in comparison to the number of orders that they receive. If you ever eat here, my advise is to order your "dish" as soon as you get your previous order. If you order once you've finished a dish, you will never get it in time. The waiters/waitresses are generally pretty nice, no complaints. The downside, and its a big one, is just the slow pace that everything is served. Don't be surprised if you are there for 3 hrs before you are full/satisfied. Food: The first couple times I went, the food was pretty good. I didn't really have an issues with it. For a sushi buffet, the food was generally pretty good. HOWEVER, when I went recently, the food was absolutely disgusting. The rice for the nigiri and the rolls were under-cooked and I was eating crunchy rice with my sushi. That may have been ok with some other cuisine, but it was definitely not with Japanese! It was not worth my money this time around. My conclusion, they have become lax after enjoying business from so many student patrons who come out to their location. All in all, I will most likely not be revisiting this restaurant. I have had better meals at other places in Austin and will go to those places in the future if I need sushi. They no longer have a bring your own alcohol policy since they now serve alcohol. If you were going to the Twin Liquors next door to bring over something, be ready to have to put the alcohol away until you leave the establishment. read more

Currently have mixed feelings about this place. I went there last night for pre-finals good luck, and it was alright. In a group of 11 people, 8 did the AYCE (all you can eat) sushi. They of course were overly stuff in the aftermath, and frankly it'd be rather frightening to recount how much they ordered. But let's just say they had 20 orders of the tempura (which is inherently filling). As for me, I didn't think I could eat $37 worth to make the AYCE experience worth it ($30 +tax and tip), especially since I didn't starve myself yesterday for proper preparation. Instead, I got 2 of their popular rolls: Cucumber Passion and Mountain (baked). Honestly, they were decent, but not worth the bill ($30 including 18%tip for our party size). The cucumber passion is pretty similar to others I've had. Not impressive but definitely not bad. Then the Mountain with the baked salmon on top was a little disappointing. It had a mayonnaise-like sauce on top that looked fattening. On the one hand, I can handle the fat ;) if it is worth it... Buuuut it was actually pretty bland, and I couldn't tell the difference of having or not, so I scraped it off :X if it doesn't add to the art, I'd rather not have to work it off later :D I will admit I am not a sushi connoisseur hands down, but this isn't my first sushi place by any means. This place seems like a very popular (but smallish) sushi spot. I stopped by for lunch this past Saturday, and it was packed. It's one of several locations in Austin that offer unlimited all you can eat sushi (minus nigiri during lunch hours), the other place being Sushi Bang Bang, which has two locations. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here. I think the quality of sushi at Sushi Bang Bang is better, but not by much, and the price point is comparable; Sushi Junai offers dinner all you can eat for $29.99 and lunch for $19.99. Sushi Bang Bang is around $27.99, dinner only I believe. That being said, this place was definitely worth the money. But come hungry if you plan on experiencing their all-you-can sushi! read more

I have been looking forward to the all you can eat menu for the last week. Finally today I got to go and man, it was spectacular!! We added up all of our food and it came to $170! We only payed $60. It was such a deal. Our favorites were the Tiger and Salmon Belly sushi. SO GOOD!! I got the salmon collar and salmon poke first. The collar was too bony, but that was the only thing I didn't like all night. The poke was spicy and super yummy. The other apps I got were the fried tofu and screaming O. Both were yummy, not as good as the poke. In terms of sushi we got many orders of salmon, salmon belly, garlic salmon. All tender melt in your mouth amazing. 100% get salmon belly sushi!! My boyfriend also got squid and octopus, he loved the octopus. In terms of rolls the tiger was the best. We also got the coco mama, shrimp tempura, red dragon, salmon lover. The salmon lover was too spicy, though my boyfriend barely tasted the spice. The shrimp was always yummy and the sauces really made it. Overall the meal was perfection. We loved almost everything. The service was an A+. She was super attentive and sweet. We had about 7-8 rounds of ordering over the course of the 90 minutes. And she was always ready to take our order. Came here with my wife and sister in law and it's a first time last time type of review which is funny because we came here because of the good reviews. Let me start by saying the rolls are 85-95% rice. The avocado and cucumber rolls the girls got were slivers compared to how much rice was packed into 1 roll. My sister in law never received her Miso soup but it showed on the check so she had to say she never got it and they took it off. I got the all you can eat which was $30 for dinner which is decent compared to other places I've been to that had $24.95 dinner AYCE that were better around town. I wasn't really pleased paying the price for several rolls that were 95% rice and little plumps of fish. The service was decent. We were helped by a short haired girl and long haired girl. Both were on their phones a lot not really attending to customers but the short haired girl was nice. The long haired girl was a bit snotty with her facial expressions. I don't understand why they would do that, there was literally only 7 pieces of sushi on my table left over. Our first serving was mild and delicious but our subsequent servings were a bit more fishy than usual..didn't really know why but whatever, very minor setback considering how everything else was great. We ordered a bunch of rolls too...actually we ordered almost 70% of the rolls and about 85% of the nigiri. Everyone gets one serving of mochi ice cream and unfortunately, the freezer or w.e. was working for the green tea and it was HELLA melted..but the chocolate...the chocolate was BOMB AF. Do NOT hesitate to get chocolate. Strawberry was good too, and so was mango. Be mindful that there was a wait of about 45 min for my group but we just walked around and then came back. Service was slow at start but it picks up the pace very quickly..depending on your waiter maybe. All in all 10/10 would definitely come again especially if that dude is serving us and the green tea ice cream stayed frozen and the eel tasted consistent throughout. After arriving in Austin at noon on a Saturday and actually stopping by, I was more than satisfied with the experience. When we arrived, we were surprised there was no wait time for the 6 of us given the limited seating. As per previous advice, we decided to do lunch buffet and ordered as much as we could think of right away. Now maybe because it was a slow day but food came out within 10 minutes, and though it wasn't high quality, it was still DELICIOUS! Review Explanation: This place only received two stars because.. 1st Star: AYCE Sushi is an option.. 2nd Star: It tastes so good that it pisses you off, which is a very confusing feeling. This was everyone's second time here in my group. The first time that we went, it was a little slow.. but we were still all satisfied enough to be super excited to get the all you can eat sushi again. The second time however, was a totally different story. Myself and 4 other friends (1 of which didn't order at all because he'd already eaten) walk in on a freezing, cold, and slightly windy day. You'll find that they have a handy-dandy clip board that says to write your table's party name down and your phone number, after that, they will call you when your table is ready. It says they will leave one voicemail, and if you don't call back within 5 minutes, you forfeit your spot in line. So we followed the instructions, and the space inside is super tiny and there's nowhere to wait, so we walked back to the car to wait for the phone call. After about 20 minutes, we started to get nervous and thought we must be up soon because only a couple of parties were ahead of us.. so we walked back to Sushi Junai. We see our name is scratched off and they're seating the people that were behind us..... ummmmmmmmmmmmm ok? We contacted the person who was supposed to be calling us and they sat us immediately because... come on, we both knew that no one ACTUALLY called us they just scratched us out and hoped for the best. It took about 15 minutes to even be acknowledged by someone.. and the person who sat us had the biggest attitude ever, which is probably because we came back wondering where our table was. They got our drinks and gave dirty looks to the one person who was sitting with us who wasn't eating. (He's Vegan). Eventually, we were all able to order our first set of rolls. We were all so pumped for this food... we hadn't eaten all day and we continued watching all of the rolls go out to the tables... until an hour went by and I was the only one who had gotten my roll. We caught a server and asked if it was OK if we went ahead and ordered our 2nd round since it was taking so long.. he hesitantly obliged. So, another 30 minutes go by and my friends still don't have their first rolls and sushi is being thrown on every single table except ours. We are all loudly talking about leaving and we set a time.. if the sushi doesn't come in 5 minutes we are standing up and leaving. Shocker -- they got out their first round one minute before we were about to walk. We kindly asked to pre-order a third roll again before the server ran off.. and they DID NOT WANT to. They said we already have a lot coming to us. After arguing about it for awhile they finally agreed to take our last order of sushi..insisting that we were gonna pay for what we didn't eat. Well....we finally got all of our sushi. When we ate our sushi we were so pissed that the sushi tasted so good because the service was sooooooo horrible! We weren't even being served by one person..it was three different people..who all seemed to hate us. We easily ate everything.. and honestly how could we not be hungry when the wait for each roll is so long? LOL. My friend went to the restroom and had to ask someone to stop to give her toilet paper because they weren't stocked up in there. Literally, she had to stick her head out and wait until someone walked by. They never stopped giving my vegan friend (who never ate) dirty looks. The entire staff was rude. To make a very long story short -- if you have 4 hours to eat three rolls of sushi for 30 bucks then this is the place for you! PS. So back again for a take out order, Friday December 30th. Ordered at 11:05AM and picked up at 11:25AM. Again my order was ready to go when I arrived. So twice in one week because my co-worker decided she wanted to try their Lunch Box, so I said why not. I got the Salmon Teriyaki (Salmon teriyaki with house teriyaki sauce) for $10.95 and she had the Korea Bolgogi (Stir fried seasoned beef with mixed vegetables) for $9.95. Both came with miso soup, salad (shredded cabbage), mixed tempura (yam, onion, zucchini, shrimp) and rice. We also got bonus of 2 Gyoza, All was fresh, hot, cooked perfectly and very tasty. Thank you Sushi Junai for being consistent and providing me with delicious meal. Also, the only people in the restaurant where the restaurant employees. So all this talk about it being busy and service taking forever, I have yet to experience. Both times, multiple people offered to help as soon as I walked in the door. I am writing this review in an AYCE sushi food coma. There is a great selection to choose from on the menu. Appetizers include a great salmon or tuna poke (ours was pretty spicy) and salads. Also on the menu are udon soups and chicken dishes for those that don't like sushi. The fish was tasty and fresh. Tons of variety when it comes to rolls too. When we went it was super packed and the wait was pretty long for first our table and then our sushi. Our server did a great job and was very friendly. A BYOB sushi spot where you can grab an all you can eat dinner deal for roughly thirty bucks. Got in around 6pm on a Friday night with a party of four and was able to secure a spot immediately (probably since the place is still somewhat new and we were early). Service was alright, as expected at an all you can eat sushi place. This place is great if you're feeling hungry, and want to down a bunch of sushi rolls and nigiri. The quality of fish was pretty good for an all you can eat style, especially since it was all made to order. Honestly speaking, it's a great place to try maybe once or twice, but I'm not the type to enjoy mass eating high quality fish. I'd rather sit a sushi bar and enjoy the textures of the cut since sushi is a somewhat delicate type of food. However, if that won't stop you, I definitely recommend getting the Hamachi collar (ask waiter) and the hamachi nigiri, especially dat collar. BEWARE of restaurants "NEW RULES"!! We took our son here last night to celebrate his homecoming and we ordered 4 of the all you can eat option for everyone at the table. The last two rolls we ordered, we could not completely finish. One roll had about 2 pieces left, the other one was not very good so we left most of it on the plate. As we asked for our check and our plates to be cleared, the server tells my husband and I that we...get this...."have to finish our food". I thought we misheard him or maybe that there was a language barrier. So asked him again to repeat himself, and he again said, "You have to finish the rolls. You have to eat them." Then, he quickly walked away as if he was embarrassed to even have to come and tell us this. My husband waved him to come back over but he sent another server instead. I asked her to explain what he was talking about. Maybe he meant we needed to box up our food? I wasn't sure. She also quickly tell us under her breath that the rules to buy the all-you-can-eat are that we have to finish the food. I busted out laughing. In all my decades on this earth, I've never paid to eat in a restaurant to be told that I need to clear my plate like a child. The server brought back our check, my husband reviewed it, he signed, paid and we walked out. And no, we did not finish what we did not want to finish. Back in the car, I pull up the restaurant website and review the "rules" for ordering the all you can eat option. SURE ENOUGH, Rule #2, you HAVE to finish your food or you will be charged an a la carte price for that roll you left on your plate. So that will be the last time we eat there, which is a shame, because we loved, loved, loved going there. **GROSS GROSS GROSS** ****COCKROACH ALERT!!! Went to Sushi Junai last night ordered 3 rolls and seaweed salad! While mixing my soy and wasabi I noticed something dark and chunky after picking around with my chop sticks I quickly realized it was a BUG, then after placing it in my hand realized it was a COCKROACH! I notified the waiter to which she replied "OH, I'm sorry". She took the bug and went to show her co-workers! She did replace our soy sauce, ginger and wasabi. She also took our unfinished seaweed salad as I told her we would not finish it in case the roach came from there. I could not stomach to eat, but my boyfriend did choose to eat some of the sushi rolls. We were not attended to at anytime after she took the roach, except for her to bring us extra napkins that we didn't even ask for. When we requested the bill, she quickly returned with the full bill, again not mentioning any inconvenience to us or any additional apology! We paid the bill and left her an appropriate tip. I could not help but say something when she picked up the tab. I explained how disheartening and disappointing it was to be treated in such a way after finding a cockroach in our food. The sushi here is not fresh by all means. I recommend not coming here if you want super or moderately fresh fish. Service here is extremely bad. The wait times for the food was horrible. Pretty good. Rice was not holding up too well. We each bought the all you can-eat sushi for around $40 each. Saki wasn't bad, not super cheap saki...some saki that's too cheap can taste like rubbing alcohol, but this place's was pretty smooth. Staff were very nice, but it's obvious they're over-worked and underpaid. Names of sushi on the menu were funny. read more

I have been to Sushi Junai about 10 times now, but our last experience was pretty disappointing. It was Saturday night and their ice machine was broken. I can understand that machines will break sometimes, but I was wondering why they didn't have someone walk 20 feet to the liquor store and buy some bags of ice. At least then they could say that ice is available upon request while they get their machine fixed. Another time we had made a reservation for 5:30pm but when we arrived we were told they didn't have any rice prepared so they wouldn't be open for another hour. wtf? During our most recent visit they didn't have several items that are on the menu. We were told that our favorite menu item, the salmon collar, is now being limited to one order per two customers. The menu does not reflect this new policy, but we ordered one anyway only to be told they were completely out of salmon collar. The server unnecessarily gave an excuse as to why they were out saying "We're trying to limit it (salmon collar) so that's why we ran out." So she's basically saying the restaurant is trying to save money by ordering less product, but not making it clear on the menu that certain items are not actually all-you-can-eat? Throughout the night we were told time and time again that they were out of things we tried to order. The server also told us that the restaurant doesn't order several of the dessert items anymore so she's not sure why they're still on the menu. The nigiri, sushi rolls and other items we ordered were still very good and the all-you-can-eat price is a good deal even if they are out of several things. However, our last experience gave us the feeling that the owner(s) or manager(s) don't really care. The servers were unapologetic about the fact there was no ice and our favorite menu items were not available. The place is packed every night and they pretty much have the AYCE sushi market cornered in Austin, so I can see why they might be resting on their laurels and not trying as hard. But unless Sushi Junai gets their shit together, we will not be returning. read more

As a self proclaimed lover of sushi, nothing has brought me as much joy in recent time than a trip to Sushi Junai. While what most attracted me there was the propect of an "ALL YOU CAN EAT" deal delivered straight to your table (where you wouldn't have to worry about those walk of shame experience to refill your plate for the 4th time) I was most suprised at the quality of the food itself and the scope of the deal being sold. What you get is either around $20 for lunch or $30 for dinner in the AYCE special. Sounds pricey but when you remember that each roll can cost anywhere between $10 to $15, it starts making sense. Now with that deal you can order the entirety of the menu (minus nigiri for lunch) which includes: appetizers (soups, sping/egg rolls, poki, edamame, tempura), rice sides, classic/baked/hand rolls, and some dessert (mango mochi is always the way to go). The scope and quality of the menu is huge and if you go on an empty stomach, you will have no problem eating your way to the amount you spend amd well beyond. Now while some people will obviously not be able to eat 20 to 30 dollars in raw fish, you can order off the menu at regular prices or even look at the lunch specials (last time I was there the one available was $14.95 for two rolls and an appetizer). One thing to take in mind is that while AYCE people can eat off each others orders, anyone else has to fend for themselves. This is important because anything you don't finish gets added to your bill, so eat cautiously and bring friends. Now overall everytime I've been to Junai I've been satisfied, however there have been minor hiccups. The hours of opperations end at 10 pm yet Ive gone at 8:50 pm before and gotten turned down due to lack of food available, the music can range frim enjoyable radio club type to loud and annoying where no conversation can be held, and one time I was stuck waiting for a waiter because a shift change was occurring and none of the previous staff wanted to deal with us. Again slightly abnormal hiccups, but nothing terrible. Just take in mind that this is a AYCE buffet with actual quality sushi and you'll see why I'm so eager to praise this place.
