What a major disappointment and horrible management at the Poway location. Do not use the deliver service through Sushi Lounge, what a mess! I always ordered through a delivery service and had no issues and prompt pickup times, but going through Sushi lounge directly was the opposite, which is unfortunate because they advertise that they have faster delivery times and it benefits the restaurant when ordering directly through them, yet they still run your delivery through Door Dash and they don't assign you a driver! After waiting an hour over my original drop off time, I called Sushi Lounge directly and spoke with Rob the manager. Rob is actually the main reason I'm writing this review. How he handled the situation was horrible and not professional. He told me that my sushi has been ready for a while and their end was done. He said "we fulfilled our part and if you want the sushi then you can pick it up" I told him I had a sleeping baby and cannot pick it up so he said "I'll see if I can find you a driver through DoorDash, but there's no guarantee" I was shocked by this because I went directly through Sushi Lounge and they took zero responsibility or offered any compensation. It's also alarming that they would let sushi sit there without doing anything about it. This was on a weeknight so I can't imagine the weekend. Maybe a dollar or 2 more a roll than some places. 2, they dont have a wide selection of specialty rolls. Neither of these would stop me from coming here. Hence the 4 star review. I didn't see the inside of the place because I called the order in and my husband picked up. The prices are a little high but oh so worth it! Everything we ordered was amazing and delicious! The flavor combinations in the rolls are amazing and I ended up having a hard time reading the rest of the menu as I fell for the very first roll I saw on the menu, the lemonade. Pretty good sushi, but portions were small and a bit overpriced. I ordered four items: the bento box, Tasmanian devil, Hawaii 5 Oh, and 2 piece salmon sushi. Let's start with the worst of the four plates--the Hawaii 5 Oh. Way too salty! All in all this dish was nothing special. I do not recommend you get it. The Tasmanian devil, on the other hand, was an excellent specialty roll. It comes with shrimp, salmon, avocado, and cilantro. The cilantro gives it an extra kick that I particularly enjoyed. We've been coming here for years & we continue to do so during COVID for takeout. I'll begin with the "cons." When it comes to their tempura vegetables I wish they'd expand upon the selection rather than provide an overwhelming amount of a variety of potatoes- yuck. What happened to broccoli or cauliflower or green beans? Furthermore, since we are now in a takeout situation, it would help if they do not place the tempura on a decorative bed of colored cabbage. While I understand the premise behind plate appeal, the garnish makes for very soggy tempura by the time you arrive home which is disappointing. Met my dad here for a quick work week lunch break and was impressed! We mostly chose this spot because the patio is dog friendly, but I would happily come back here again on my own. I got the sushi roll lunch special ($15 for 2 rolls plus a miso soup) and it was all tasty. I ordered the caterpillar and crunchy roll and they were very generous sized rolls. The eel in the caterpillar roll was especially delicious and the avocado on top was perfect. The service was also very friendly. The waitresses stopped by frequently to make sure we had everything we needed and they were quick to address any needs we had (drink refills, grabbing us the soy sauce and place settings that were missing from our table, etc) Overall it was a good experience with great food, friendly staff, and fair prices. Solid sushi joint. I tend to prefer rolls with sauces all over them. I also prefer rolls that are not based around a cali roll. So for this spot, they hit one out of two. No california based rolls, which was nice. Though not a lot of sauced rolls, which is a bummer. The service was great, friendly, and informative. Our server knew every roll and what was in each one, that's impressive! The miso was easily the best I've had. The garlic edamame was my favorite from any place. Between seven of us we got maybe 8 rolls. Everyone seemed happy with their choices, though no one gushed about any one. My mom got a seasame chicken plate which she devaoured and said was really good. My dad had a bento box with salmon which filled him right up, and he loved it too. The rest of us had rolls, and while they were well made, I don't recall any one specific roll. Great service, nice atmosphere, good sake selection, good rolls, and nice entree options. Next time I'm around Poway I'll look for another sushi spot, but there is no reason to avoid this one. read more

Nothing is worse then paying top dollar for bad food. The sushi was dry and not fresh. It seems like the rolls were prepped hours beforehand, not made after we ordered them. The key to this was the deformations and oxidation on the avocado that made it seem like rolls had been packed together in a fridge. Order three different things. Left Hungry and Unsatisfied. This place is awesome! Everything was clean and well-organized. It can be hard to feel comfortable eating out right now because of covid restrictions, but they made it easy. We were seated quickly and my server was really helpful with recommendations based on my likes and dislike. And the sushi was amazing! It was so fresh and flavorful that I even tried some things I don't normally like, and loved it! The manager, Jordan, even came by our table to check if we were enjoying the meal. We had dinner during restaurant week and for the most part, everything was fresh and delicious. Restaurant week dinner was $30. I had the Ahi Tacos appitezer, which was the one thing I didn't like. It was overcooked. Then I had the Salmon Ponzu, which was a big portion and really good. Lastly was the Albacore roll, which again, was really good. We used to really like this place & the atmosphere (when dining was fully open) but the last couple times we went with friends the rolls were much smaller than we remembered (One of those times was before the pandemic hit so it was not related to that). We had to end up buying more food because it just didn't fill any of us. We did order on a busy night the first time so it's possible they were having a hard time keeping up or they were running low on stuff (just guessing). Dear Groupon. I hate you but I love you. Step 1: Buy Groupon Step 2: Go to Poway Sushi Lounge to use groupon Step 3: Order just the right amount or more than your groupon covers Step 4: Enjoy! I came to Poway Sushi Lounge because they were featured on a groupon (if you couldn't tell) and we were not disappointed! Why? Mainly because we went in with low expectations. We looked at the rolls online and decided on a few of their specialty rolls but with a catch. We wanted to know exactly what was in it. After being told it was just mediocre things, we decided on the Del Mar (3.5 stars) which is lobster/veggies inside and beef tataki outside. To Accompany this roll, we got the spicy scallop (cherie t's standard), a Rainbow Roll (My standard), tarantula roll (soft shell crab), and an order of the miso Cod. I'm sorry but the rolls were all pretty gross. One telltale sign for me of a m'eh sushi place is if they put asparagus in all their rolls and this place did just that. The asparagus, cucumber, and sprouts overpowered everything else in flavor and texture. Even after we picked out these veggies, it was still just okay. I'd really give all the rolls together a 2 star rating. So what saved them? The Miso Cod. When it was brought out, the Miso Cod looked like a typical piece of grilled fish from the fish market with gravy poured on top (the miso sauce). We were pleasantly surprised to realize that the fish was cooked perfectly with a light flakey texture and the sauce complimented it very nicely. The only minus is that the sauce was a little too salty for us. Still though, an excellent dish if you like black cod. So with 2 star rolls and a 4 star fish. I would want to give it 3.5 stars. But the service and wait made this place seem less appealing. Solid 4 star rating throughout. Would I go back? yeah, probably. I used Cherie T's camera to take the pics. Incredible experience @ Poway Sushi Lounge!!!! Party of 4 promptly seated at the bar. (530pm). We were greeted by a friendly chef named Miles. We started out with the one of the House Specialty Rolls the Tsunami Roll. Grilled shrimp, Krab, asparagus, layered with Cajun searared albacore and roasted garlic chili cilantro ponzu sauce. Sheeeeeeeeer heaven! Drinks were good Saketinis I had a Appelsaketini. They don't actually use Sake but they use 48 proof Asian vodka made out of rice and barley. Smooth and tasty, a little on the sweet side for me but good nevertheless. On to the Sashimi for me had the (Hamachi) Yellowtail smooth like butter very fresh. Next was the Nigiri Unagi (Freshwater Eel), also very tasty and fresh. We wanted to try one of the specialty Sashimi dishes so at the chefs recommendation we tried the Citrus Chili yellow tail. Yellowtail Sashimi Serrano chilies, baby cilantro, and yuzu soy sauce. Another hit wow! I was pretty full at this point but wanted to keep sampling the goods. Another chef recommendation the chronic (no not the kind you smoke). A house specialty roll with shrimp tempura, avocado, krab, cucumbers topped with spicy tuna, tempura crunchies, and eel sauce. It came with some special dipping sauce. YUMMMMMMMMMM!!!! . What else can I say the service was outstanding our chef Miles even carved an orange into a pumpkin. Overall favorite for the group was the tsunami roll, for me it was a toss up between Tsunami and Chronic. I highly recommend this place especially if you're in the San Diego area area. We are sushi lovers so first the good. The Sushi Lounge sushi is excellent quality and very tasty however the portions are relatively small. That being said, we place an order for sashimi to go, coupled with some miso soup and a roll. One order for the sashimi was for a small (5 pieces), the other was for a large ((10 pieces). While the 5 piece order was accurate, the piece order only included 8 pieces. That was pretty disappointing. Don't know if the thought a couple of the pieces were larger and decided those were "double" or what but if you pay for 10 pieces, you should get 10 pieces. Too late to do anything after we were home as it was an order to go. Check carefully before you leave. I felt cheated, so that's the reason for 2 Stars. read more

This is not real sushi! In fact, it's almost offensive that this is attempting to be passed off as authentic Japanese. I thought I'd give it a try due to the high Yelp reviews... First and last time I will go here! I just spent $50 only to find that all 3 rolls are full of crab meat and aren't suppose to be. Even worse, it's imitation crab. I know because I asked the hostess and she told me they use it in all of their rolls. I probably should have asked for my money back then, but I didn't. Instead, I got home only to find out the "sushi chefs" that made the rolls used special white rice paper to wrap the rolls in because they weren't skilled enough to have the rice stick to the outside of the seaweed. Bottom line: Not real sushi (all was "American" sushi with fake crab), not made by sushi chef's (abundantly clear by presentation and lack of skill), and you pay as much, if not more, than you would for real sushi. Let me preface this review first by saying that if you like the flavor of traditional, authentic sushi and other Japanese food then this is not the place for you. I definitely prefer more traditional flavors so this was a major letdown for me. Poway Sushi Lounge is great if you love "American Style Sushi". Lots of rolls with tons of ingredients, krab instead of crab, different kinds of dipping sauces, deep fried rolls...if that's your thing then this is your place. As I stated, that's not my cup of tea so I was not impressed with this place. We ordered 3 rolls and I personally felt that none of them were very good. Flavors were just...not good. At all. One of them had seared fish with Cajun seasoning which, in my book, is just wrong. My wife actually stopped eating she disliked it so much. The best roll in my opinion was the rainbow roll but even that wasn't very good. Our server was alright. He was very friendly and attentive. Except for one point at the end of the night when we wanted to pay, he took a while picking up our check. Otherwise, service was pretty spot on. The place was packed so obviously they're popular. I just didn't like it here. But as I said before, I'm partial to more traditional Japanese food. So if that sounds like you, then stay away from here. read more

I came here last night with a couple of my friends for dinner after watching a movie at ultra star. It's only a block away from Ultra Star Cinemas in Poway, so it's a perfect place to go after a movie date. We arrived right before happy hour ended so we were able to get good hand rolls and sushi for a reasonable price.They had a lot of choices for happy hour. My boyfriend and his sister tried the oyster shooters. I'm not a big fan of oysters, but they seemed to enjoy it. The spicy tuna hand roll was delicious and had a lot of tuna. The unagi roll on the other hand was a bit too sweet in my opinion, and not enough unagi too. I guess that's what you get for half the price though. We also ordered the crunchy roll and calamari. The shrimp tempura in the crunchy roll tasted a little too oily, even when we asked for the crunchy stuff on the side. Overall, it's great to go for happy hour. The bill came out to 60 dollars for 4 people, which wasn't bad for the amount of food we ordered. I'd love to come back to try the specialty rolls next time though! read more

We walked in here on a weekday night -- the place was busy enough to have to wait for a table, but luckily we were able to slide into the only 2 spots open at the bar. The sushi rolls here were pretty good, and I loved that you could watch the sushi chefs at work and they would actually interact with you. This place has a very cool, hip vibe at night. It seems like everyone knows each other, and I saw lots of regulars drinking beers and sake and the chefs laughing along with the customers like they were old pals. I'm on the email list and I get coupons mailed regularly, stuff like free appetizer or free dessert with your order, but I haven't made it back yet. read more

My aunt took me and my grandmother here for lunch today. We got there right at 1130a which was exactly when they open for lunch. Nice interior - the sushi bar was nicely placed and there are 2 good size flat screen TVs showing ESPN and ESPN2 (i think). One habit I tend to have is to see if the sushi guys behind the sushi bar are Japanese or non-Japanese. All four of the guys behind the sushi bar were definitely not Japanese. Not even Asian. So I was a bit worried. But I was happily put at ease when our food arrived. We ordered (all lunch special items on the back of the menu): 1. SASHIMI SALAD 9.95 mixed greens, cucumbers, sprouts, chef selected cuts of fresh sashimi, house ginger dressing, bonito flakes - REALLY REALLY GOOD!! My goodness - it was an incredibly generous portion AND the fish (chunks of tuna, salmon, tuna tataki, hamachi?) was sooo fresh!! 2. SUSHI LUNCH SPECIAL 10.95 california roll w/five pieces sushi (tuna, yellowtail, salmon, albacore and shrimp) - Again, wow. All five pieces of fish were soooo fresh. 3. TEMPURA UDON 5.95 japanese thick noodles, bonita broth, tempura shrimp and vegetables - Unfortunately, not that great. It's awesome that they put the tempura (shrimp, zucchini, potato, yam) on the side (no tempura sauce thou). The broth tasted more Chinese style than Japanese style. There were small slices of (sauteed?) zucchini in the broth which put me off a bit. Threw of the taste for me. 4. Edamame : yeah, well, it's edamame. Let me know if you ever find a 'blow my freakin mind away' edamame... The lunch price for all our items was unreal. Just really good portions and fresh fresh fresh fish. I couldn't believe it really.
